The reason that Agra is one of India's most visited destinations can be explained with two simple words: Taj Mahal. Of course, the Uttar Pradesh region boasts many impressive examples of Mughal architecture, but the legendary monument to a husband's love, built by Shah Jahan in the 17th century, remains the most ornate and crowd-popular. Come for the obvious main attraction and stay for the medieval city's additional charms, from lush gardens and towering mosques to curries that inflame the lips and sumptuous fabrics for sale in the bazaar (just be sure to dodge Agra's aggressive population of souvenir-hustlers who are all too happy to take tourists for a ride.) Checking out the world's most famous mausoleum doesn't need to be a dreary experience in colorful Agra, just a four hour drive down the road from Delhi.
