The Mountaineer was a neat experience for us.. the charming/funky design and decor is late-40's resort iconic; ceramic tiled bathroom, basic bed, knotty pine & gorgeous mature plantings just outside our porch area. Nice choices for cont breakfast.
Door not as secure as I want; our curtains were safety pinned together & were too short to keep out light; large trucks blocked part of the viewMy husband has told me to stop going on about this motel, BUT I just wanted to convey the adventurousness of departing from the chain motels. This place is a historical treasure, enjoy!
Location. Close to downtown Asheville.
Very dirty and bad rooms. (In general)It shouldn't be on business. (Unfortunately);(

The hotel was Ok. The location is good. I was disappointed that the breakfast is only until 9:30am. That's a little too early for me while I'm on vacation. I stayed there 3 days and never made it in time. The hotel entrance is extremely difficult to navigate in and out of. It was also very difficult to find a parking spot after 10pm. Don't plan on enjoying a game or movie in your room. The Tv's are still the old fashioned kind. No microwaves in room either. It wasn't awful, but I would not reccommend or stay there again.
This small hotel is pretty basic but the basics are handled well: Comfortable beds, good shower, plenty of towels, decent coffee for the in-room coffee maker, nice small fridge for our picnic items, and a tasty and varied breakfast. All in all, we were pleasantly surprised. It was very convenient to Biltmore Estate and downtown Asheville, the main points of our trip, and was an easy on/off from I-40. The building is more attractive than the online photos suggest.

Overall did not meet expectation. We didn't see any bugs, per say, but expected to given the conditions of the place. They also charged an extra $10/night upon arrival for a minor child (same room/same bed). It was just barely worth the price to begin with, and we will not be returning to staty there again.
The staff was very friendly. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. For me that is what is most important! I will be staying there again as I am in the area often.
The decor is not impressive. What do you expect for the cost of the room?I worked hotels several years as an Executive Housekeeper, a large chain. The bed and bath were clean.
