The Hôtel-Buffet de la Gare is ideally located close to the centre of Chateau d Oex, directly next to the train and bus stations and only 50 metres from the ski lifts. The hotel is ideally located at the train station where you can change money and purchase your regional ski pass which includes trains, busses, shuttles, and ski lifts. The top floor room had a nice view of the surrounding mountains and was toasty warm. The owner and a male night manager solved all minor problems in a timely and professional manner. The duck and pork dinners at the restaurant were delicious and reasonably priced. If you are going ballooning, it is a short walk to the take-off field. If you are skiing, La Braye gondola is walking distance too. Coop supermarket is next to La Braye. The post office is at the end of the driveway. Parking was perfectly situated right outside the door of the hotel.
Pack the essentials as you have to carry them up the stairs to your room. Had to remind the non-Swiss housekeeper to replenish the shower packets and exchange the towels. The simple breakfast consists of croissants and breads, jam and butter, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, juice and sometimes cheese; muesli, yogurt, fruit and meat would have been a nice addition.
Check in and check out was easy. Boss of the hotel was very laid back and easy going and we felt we could just walk in and out at any time without being judged. We came in with take away pizza and supermarket shopping and nobody had a problem with us eating in our room.
Other guests were a bit noisy, as the the walls are very thin. No tv, but we didn't miss it at all. Linnen was a bit dirty looking and the walls had some grease on them.
