The hotel was dated and kind of grossed me out
What I have to say that is SUPER positive about this hotel is that: 1. It SMELLS SO GOOD. Really clean and neat and tidy. 2. Very nice business center! 3. Great having a little grill right in the lobby 4. The room I had was very spacious and had a TON of outlets. Seriously, there's like 8 outlets that I can see from where I'm sitting. 5. The decor was VERY nice. Bathrooms were more modern with adjustable shower heads, they had towels that were color coordinated like you would have at your house. Very nice bathroom soaps, lotions, etc. Makeup mirror, too! Maybe this was a one off experience, maybe staff was tired or something but the service I received at the desk wasn't very helpful. The hotel is GREAT for the price and if you catch the front desk on a good day, I'd recommend this to anyone.
Background: This hotel was booked for me by my boss on booking.com for a business trip. After booking, we were given a receipt that showed the amount that was paid and the credit card that was used, we also had a pin and a confirmation #. I got an e-mail asking me to set my preferences for the hotel stay - I was impressed. I chose a king room on a higher floor with extra blankets, a good view and an early check in of 1pm. Early that morning I got a text saying that they weren't able to get me a room by 1pm. A bummer but I let that roll off of my shoulder. When I arrived at the front desk, the employee greeted me and got to work on checking me in but asked for a credit card. It turns out that they didn't have any "pre payment on file". So I offered to give them the confirmation number that I had. They just kept repeating that they have no record of the pre-payment. I offered to show them the PIN and the booking e-mail that I had on my phone. Again, "I'm not showing any pre-payment". Note, the employee did not look at my phone that I offered to show what I was talking about. They did offer that the only way that they could accept a credit card payment from my boss was by faxing a credit card authorization form. So I called my boss and she reminds me of the receipt that she e-mailed me and offers to help in anyway possible, maintaining that she already paid her card was already charged and that we have the receipt. (Which I did). I return to the front desk to try to show the employee the receipt from my phone and they looked at it briefly and said "that print is way too small, there's no way I can see that". So I call my boss back again and neither of us can figure out the problem, so my boss calls the customer service number and ends up fixing the problem. My issues are these: 1. The employee never even TRIED to look up my information via the confirmation number I had OR the receipt. I guess in all fairness they did try to look at the receipt but not very hard. They could've enlarged the screen, printed it out, something. 2. They never explained what the different problems COULD be. They just kept saying that we never paid. Without knowing WHERE the problem could be stemming from it was hard to figure out what to do next. I was just there saying we paid and they were saying "no you didn't" while not looking at my documentation. 3. After checking in the only request that I got fulfilled was the king room. I ended up on the 2nd floor and after all the frustration didn't even try to change it or request the extra blankets. 4. The staff wasn't really "friendly". They weren't mean but they didn't smile, only said things in a matter of fact manner.
The room was very convenient to the Duke campus. We decided to stay the night after a basketball game but weren't very familiar with the Durham area. This hotel was definitely a good place for people who don't know what else is around.
Having previously worked in hospitality for 6 years, I find myself more critical of hotels and their staff more than others. This staff was not very pleasant and I don't think any of the people I encountered smiled once. You need to ensure that guests who are out of their normal comfort of home feel comfortable in the place they'll be sleeping. The beds were also not great. The air conditioning/heat was very loud.
