Located on the northeast portion of the island, Port Antonio is considered one of the most beautiful and tranquil towns in Jamaica and houses some of the most exclusive resorts. It was founded by the Spaniards in the 16th century who called the town "Puerto Anton" after the governor's son. When the British settled in the 1800's, they called the area Tichfield. By the late 1800's, Port Antonio had become the banana capital of the world. This trade brought in a lot of money but, as often happens, the money was not shared. The rich became richer and the poor remained poor. With the banana trade, however, came an influx of tourists. Thus, Port Antonio became the cradle of tourism in Jamaica until surpassed by Montego Bay. Although now referred to as the other side of the island, this charming town still remains a secluded hideaway for many a celebrity including Bette Davis, Ginger Rogers, Harrison Ford, and Denzel Washington.
