This 4-star hotel made a great base for our week-long trip to Bilbao. You can catch the C1 train from Penota station, which is just down the (steep) hill behind the hotel, and which will take you into Abando station in central Bilbao in about 20 minutes for about €2 one way. You can also take a bus, or use the metro from Santurtzi station. The hotel is also a short drive from the ferry port, and has its own underground parking lot. Bilbao airport is a 25-minute taxi ride away (via motorway), costing €40-€50 one way. The hotel is within walking distance of Las Arenas beach in Getxo on the other side of the estuary, courtesy of a trip in the remarkable Vizcaya Bridge's gondola (50c per person each way), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a striking building, architecturally, whose rooms are modern and clean, thanks to the daily efforts of the hotel's efficient and friendly housekeeping staff. We found the reception, restaurant and bar staff to be equally friendly, courteous and efficient. We stayed in room 610, which is on the floor above reception in the original building, served by elevators, and overlooking one of the many public parks in the area. The hotel has a restaurant, bar and terrace. Its restaurant offers a very good daily menu (at €20-€22 for 3 courses, including wine, water and bread). It also offers a fine (but more expensive) a la carte menu and a decent room service menu. A buffet breakfast is served every morning in the restaurant, which can also be eaten on the terrace, which offers panoramic views over the estuary. There are further bedrooms in the hotel's modern extension beneath the original building. This has a gym but no pool (which didn't bother us).
