Pros:We had an incredible view overlooking the Alabama River and the Edmund Pettus bridge. The suite we were in was huge (like a 1 BR apt in Manhattan) for a fraction of the price. Great vibe and even though there was a wedding reception and another party going on, we couldn't hear any of the music inside our rooms.
Cons:Facility is a bit run down. Could use a face lift - that's why I'd encourage you to stay there! It's a v historic town/area - not to be missed, esp if you have any interest in the history of civil rights and activism in this country.
Pros:It was a quaint historic hotel that had been renovated about 18 years ago. At the point of renovation I can see that it must have been gorgeous. The price was good.
Cons:It didn't look like any upkeep had taken place since the renovation. Our room had a clogged sink and a broken toilet seat for our entire stay of two nights. When I reported it to the morning staff the first day (Friday) nothing was done when we returned to our hotel in the afternoon. Upon questioning I found that the maintenance man didn't show up for work that day so nothing could be done until the following Monday. They didn't offer to switch our room or comp us at all until I brought it up. They were happy to do so, but weren't proactive at all. Beware booking online as when I showed up they had no record of my reservation. I was told that not all of their internet bookings were coming through. Luckily they had a room for us.
Pros:The antique furnishings, the wood and brick flooring, the view of the river and river breeze.
Cons:The hotel and staff. There was no AC in the room. Despite calling several times all afternoon and going to the desk no one came to fix it. I had to check out at 11 pm because the room was 90 deg and my 9 month old could not sleep. The front desk staff was more interested in socializing with a party that was going on. They could not find a luggage rack so I had to make multiple trips carrying stuff with a baby in tow. I finally got to check out and managed to negotiate a refund. The front desk staff was supposed to help find another place but instead of calling and helping to arrange accommodations they just pointed me back towards the highway where there were hotels that might have space. Worst experience ever and I will never go back and I don't recommend!!!
