The 9 best hotels in South Lake Tahoe

Explore the best hotels in South Lake Tahoe handpicked by local expert Clara Hogan.
Clara Hogan

Lake Tahoe attracts millions of visitors every year – for its world-renowned ski resorts, breathtaking views, and bounty of outdoor adventure. As someone who lives just a couple of hours away in the San Francisco Bay Area, I make weekend trips to this majestic alpine year-round – taking to the slopes in the winter, cruising the water in the summer, taking in the foliage in the fall, and hiking to waterfalls in the spring. I’ve even visited during the shoulder season where I could ski in the morning and hit the beach later in the day. All this to say: Tahoe is a backyard I’ll never get tired of playing in. While both North and South Lake Tahoe have their perks, I gravitate to South Lake Tahoe if I’m looking for a more action-packed trip. Compared to the quainter and quieter North side, South Lake Tahoe melds nature with big city amenities: think hiking trails, beaches, and ski resorts (including Heavenly and Sierra-at-Tahoe), as well as restaurants, casinos, and festivals. To help you decide where to stay, I’ve rounded up my list of best hotels in South Lake Tahoe – from budget-friendly boutique spots to large casino hotels and elaborate luxury resorts.

1.

Edgewood Tahoe Resort

Address:

180 Lake Parkway

Price:

$432-1854/night

Originally opened in the 1960s, Edgewood Tahoe upgraded from a golf course to a full-service resort in 2017. Today, it’s easily one of the most luxurious hotels in Lake Tahoe – and it doesn’t take long to feel it. When entering the modern 154-room lodge, you’ll take in a stunning welcome, with soaring A-frame windows showcasing views of Lake Tahoe.
Chic rooms feature fireplaces, soaking tubs, and, often, postcard-worthy views (mine once had a patio just feet from the water). It’s easy to get anywhere in South Tahoe from here, but you could easily fill your days never straying far. When you’re ready to unwind, head to the spa or join a daily wellness activity, be it a silent disco, meditation, or sound bath.
Don’t miss the three on-site restaurants – with its awe-inspiring views, Edgewood Restaurant is a must (splurge on the filet.) Final tip: don’t forget your suit, the lakefront pool is heated year-round.

2.

Black Bear Lodge

Address:

1202 Ski Run Boulevard

Price:

$214-384/night

When arriving at the ski chalet-style Black Bear Lodge, you instantly feel warm and welcome. The inviting main building features a 32-foot-tall fireplace made of smooth river rock, wood beams, and a rustic yet modern design. Formerly the nine-room Black Bear Inn, the hotel underwent renovations in 2017 when it changed owners.
The property offers five guest rooms in the main building featuring en-suite gas fireplaces, and four private cabins, which sleep two to five people and include kitchenettes. As part of the expansion, the new owners added 22 rooms in a remodeled lodge on the adjacent land.
Altogether, 70 percent of the property is undeveloped, creating a calm and nature-filled retreat just a few blocks from Heavenly Resort. Don’t miss the outdoor hot tub and or happy hour from 4-6pm in the lobby bar (one of Tahoe’s best-kept secrets, in my opinion), which offers craft beers, California wines and appetizers.

3.

The Landing Resort And Spa

Address:

4104 Lakeshore Boulevard

Price:

$230-821/night

When you’re in Tahoe, you’ll want to spend as much time staring at the shimmering blue water as possible. The Landing has that going for it by the eyefull, offering panoramic views from many rooms and spaces throughout the property.
Situated directly on the waterfront and steps from the Nevada border, you’ll feel secluded yet will be in the center of the action, with restaurants and casinos minutes away. In the summer, talk steps to find a place to pic picnic, stroll, or simply bask on the beach. In the summer, walk directly to the gondola at Heavenly Ski Resort. No matter the season, enjoy the heated pool and hot tub, plus comfortable rooms that feature stone fireplaces and lake-facing balconies.
On-site Jimmy restaurant offers California fare (I’ve been for brunch and the smoked salmon benedict was the fuel I needed), a 500-bottle wine vault, and nightly live music.

4.

The Coachman Hotel

Address:

4100 Pine Boulevard

Price:

$110-559/night

Named one of the most Instagrammable hotels in the world by Vogue, the Coachman is where the cool kids stay when they visit South Lake Tahoe. Located on the California side near the Nevada border, the motel (originally built in the 1980s) has been chicly renovated and features a minimal, yet trendy design.
The 42 rooms on site are outfitted with handcrafted wood furniture and a modern aesthetic, and range from basic doubles to one-bedroom suites – even featuring a few pet-friendly rooms. The best part about the Coachmen is the community feel.
The public spaces, from the pool to the rooftop terrace, as well as daily happy hour from 3-6pm and nightly s’mores, give travelers a chance to mingle and swap stories from their day’s adventures enjoying the nearby Lakeside marina, golf courts, or ski resorts. The hotel also frequently holds events, from wine tastings, to yoga, and sunset beach picnics.

5.

Hampton Inn & Suites South Lake Tahoe

Address:

3838 Lake Tahoe Boulevard

Price:

$145-478/night

One of the best hotels in South Lake Tahoe close to the beach or the slopes, the Hampton Inn & Suites South Lake Tahoe is a short drive from Heavenly Village and Heavenly Gondola Run, so you’re never far from a hiking trail or some boutique shopping.
At the hotel, the heated indoor pool and hot tub are ideal for summer or winter fun, while the heated patio makes it possible to enjoy the crisp Tahoe air year-round. The spacious rooms and suites are stocked with all the essentials, and the complimentary breakfast is a nice added bonus.
If you’re budget conscious, it’s worth noting that many amenities won’t cost you more: free parking, free Wi-Fi, and free EV charging to name a few. Bringing Fido along? The Hampton Inn is pet-friendly, too, with an extra fee.

6.

Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa and Casino

Address:

111 Country Club Drive

Price:

$139-703/night

If you’re feeling lucky, the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe, one of the fancy hotels in South Lake Tahoe, is calling. The property’s “Old Tahoe feel” Grand Lodge Casino offers hundreds of slot machines and table games. But this isn’t just a hotel for gamblers, it’s a great choice for outdoor enthusiasts and family vacationers, too.
The hotel offers both guest rooms and lakefront cottages, many of which offer private balconies perfect for enjoying a glass of wine while watching a Tahoe sunset. On-site restaurants range from casual (the Cutthroat Saloon) or Long Eagle Grille, which offers panoramic views paired with a seasonal menu showcasing Niman Ranch steaks, fresh seafood, and a California-heavy wine list.
One quirky feature: you can enter the heated year-round pool inside the hotel and swim into the wintry outdoors to enjoy scenic views while staying warm.

7.

The Jeffrey Hotel

Address:

4074 Pine Boulevard

Price:

$97-365/night

Location, location, location is the selling point for The Jeffrey, which is situated a jaunt from the Lakeside Marina, Heavenly Village, and the Heavenly Gondola, as well as many of South Lake Tahoe’s best dining, drinking, and shopping destinations.
Take a short walk over the border into Nevada and get ready to try your luck at the many local casinos such as Harrah’s, Harvey’s, or the Hard Rock Hotel. The Jeffrey hotel has been recently renovated, and the interior is simple with rustic touches, drawing inspiration from the 1970s – and specifically, the camping culture of that era.
Overall, the spaces have a warm and welcoming vibe. Rooms are clean, minimal and budget-friendly. Many offer sitting areas and small kitchenettes. The no-frills guest experience has been streamlined, and the hotel continues to offer contactless check-in and check-out, in addition to free Wi-Fi and free on-site parking.

8.

Marriott's Timber Lodge, A Marriott Vacation Club Resort

Address:

4100 Lake Tahoe Boulevard

Price:

$150-1203/night

With a prime location at the base of Heavenly Mountain, Marriott Timber Lodge allows you to take the gondola right up the mountain with your ski or snowboard gear and hit the slopes in no time. Part of Marriott’s Vacation Club, the hotel doesn’t charge an amenity fee, keeping the experience more affordable.
Rooms range from standard guest rooms to one-to-three bedrooms. Every room has either a kitchenette or a full kitchen, and many suites offer private balconies with mountain views. But the hotel offers more than just proximity to the slopes.
The heated outdoor pool will be a welcoming respite and the on-site restaurant FiRE + iCE Grill and Bar is a surprisingly fun experience, serving Mongolian cuisine over an open grill. The resort caters to families, as well, with a game room and regular kids’ activities.

9.

Basecamp South Lake Tahoe

Address:

4143 Cedar Avenue

Price:

$90-373/night

I’ve stayed at several Basecamp locations before and South Lake Tahoe spot is one of my favorite spots. Designed to feel like a rustic ski lodge (at more affordable prices) the hotel offers king beds great for couples to bunk-bed offerings that can sleep up to eight, making it a good choice for groups or big families.
The “Great Indoors” rooms take the Basecamp concept to a new level with an indoor tent (complete with a plush king bed), a faux log fire, a picnic table, and indoor camping chairs. Original art by well-known California artist Wendy MacNaughton is incorporated throughout the rooms and complements the warm, rustic decor.
Around the hotel, you’ll find plenty of amenities and activities, from the fire pits and lawn games to the on-site brewery and beer garden by South of North Brewing Co. Five public decks provide various views, with the Spa Deck also offering a rooftop hot tub and the Lobby Deck serving up the fixings for s’mores.
