If you are only visiting the island for a short time or you only plan on staying in one spot, there's not much you need to rent a car. If, however, you plan on doing a lot of exploring then having a rental car is most certainly going to be your best option. While there are public transportation options that travel between major population centers, if you plan on doing any exploring into more rural areas of the island, this type of transportation will not be an option. You can also choose to take a taxi, but this can get quite expensive in a hurry.
