It's a well known story Lady Godiva rides naked on horseback through the town as a bet to get her husband to levy the townspeople's taxes. And this was only the first event that has put Coventry, England on the itinerary for many travelers.
The once-capitol of England, Coventry has had a long and diluted history, and was nearly destroyed during World War II. But the people there, proud of their history, chose to rebuild. Now, the town is an interesting conglomeration of the past, present, and future. The ruined Coventry Cathedral (also known as St. Michael's Cathedral) not only exudes medieval history, but also serves as a stark memorial to the horrors of war. Attractions, such as Coventry University and the Coventry Transport Museum, are dedicated to the city's progress in the post-war years.
Because of its size, Coventry is a wonderful stop over for UK travelers. Most of the town can be seen in a day. Geographically, Coventry lies conveniently near London, Shakespeare's Stratford-Upon-Avon, and York, and has become a popular stopping place for many tour groups. The town is also a major bus stop for many of the lines throughout the country, making access to Coventry a snap.
