Despite the legal driving age being 17 in Edinburgh, Thrifty won't hire a car to you if you're under 21 and haven't had a licence for at least 12 months. You will be able to drive with your home licence for up to 12 months, provided it is in English. You must bring your online booking confirmation with you, and a valid form of identification. You'll need a valid debit or credit card with the main driver's name on it. If you booked online with someone else's card, the card owner must be there when collecting.
There are two offices available in Edinburgh and your choice of the office depends on how you arrive. If you arrive by flight, book your car hire through the airport office and collect it when you arrive. If you're driving in or taking a train, make sure you head to the Haymarket Railway Station in the city centre. The Thrifty car hire offices are located opposite the road on Haymarket Street, by the Edinburgh City Wide. Remember to book online to get the best prices.
Edinburgh's public transport system is one of the best in the world, so if you're trying to get to the city centre, consider using one of the Park and Ride facilities on the outskirts of the city centre and taking a tram or bus into the city. In the city, on-street parking and car parks are usually paid parking options. On-street is monitored by meters, while car parks use a ticketing system. Parking in the centre of Edinburgh is the most expensive, so try and avoid this if you can.
Mini (Volkswagen up! or similar) is the most frequently booked rental car type from Thrifty in Edinburgh.
