Top tips for renting a car in Umbria

  • According to the Italian Rules of the Road, seat belts are mandatory in front and back seats. Any child under 1.50 m (4.9 ft) tall and below 36 kg (79 lb) must be restrained through a car seat in the back seat when traveling around Umbria in a rental vehicle. Failure to do so will result in fines or suspension of your driver’s license for up to two months if you repeat the offense. If you haven’t purchased a child car seat or booster seat, book with the rental company, which comes at a daily cost. While European regulation applies to all children 12 years and below, Italian law is different because it doesn’t make any reference to age.
  • All highways in Umbria are toll roads, e.g., the A1 (Autostrada del Sole), the oldest European highway connecting Florence to Umbria, Rome, and beyond. All the signs on this route are green. Taking this toll road for a long time will cost you more. There is a separate toll road tariff for each vehicle class, with the lowest rate being charged to class A vehicles (motorcycles and most passenger cars). A toll gate is designated as ALT STAZIONE, and you can pay here with cash, any major credit card, a Dutch bank debit card, or Telepass.
  • Beware of ZTL rules on limited traffic zones within the city centers. You can only drive into a ZTL zone if you hold a permit, failure to which you'll be fined through your rental company. The ticket is typically granted to domiciled citizens and taxi and bus drivers outside of Rome. ZTL zones keep changing and are not marked on GPS, so do not follow it blindly. The easiest way to tell you're approaching ZTL is by noticing parking signs denoted with Ps (white or blue background). But sometimes, there are no signs, so you must research in advance.
  • Unless you’re from EU Member State, your car insurance is not valid in Umbria, Italy. Normal travel insurance cannot cover your rental car. You need a different international policy to protect you while in Italy and other Schengen countries. The most important policy is the Collision Damage Waiver, which you can buy from your car rental agency in Umbria. It should protect you in the unfortunate event of your death, property damage, and injury to other people during your rental period.

With a personal car, you can take breaks any time if you're driving your kids around and you'll have room for luggage. Car rentals are usually more cost-effective for group tours. Several remote towns in Umbria (like Amelia) are not connected to the public transport system. In other places, e.g., Allerona, you must drive a few kilometres (7.7 km or 4.7 miles) to catch a train. This makes Umbria car rentals the most convenient option.

Speed limits depend on what road you're using: 130 km/h (80 mph) on highways, 110 km/h (70 mph) on bigger non-urban roads, 90 km/h (55 mph) on national roads, and 50 km/h (30 mph) in residential places. If your rental car has Telepass, you won't stop at the toll booth on a highway. You will hear a beep, meaning that your Telepass device has been detected and you have been charged. To avoid toll charges on freeways, travel through national roads or Strada Statale (SS) for free. However, such routes are more likely to be long and winding. In outlying areas, you'll encounter groups of cyclists. Make friendly toots with the car horn. If another driver flashes their headlights behind you, they're probably trying to overtake you. When the flashlights are from vehicles coming towards you, you're probably being warned about speed traps or traffic police ahead.

  • How old do you have to be to rent a car in Umbria, Italy?

Umbria car rentals are meant for drivers who are 21 or older. Additional costs apply to drivers who are below 25 and above 75. Your driving license, whether Italian or from your home country, must be at least one year old. The rental agencies do not offer International Driving Permit (IDP), so you should apply before you collect the car. The IDP is not necessary for picking up the car, but you must produce it if asked by the police. In addition, have your ID or passport at all times.
