Jamaica
This Week's Travel Focus - Jamaica
Yeah Mon! Jamaica is an island paradise perfect for anyone looking to escape a cold winter this year. Jamaica's peak travel season runs from December to early April, after the hurricane season has passed, and tourists can count on sunny skies and warm beaches.
Our Top Reasons for a Jamaica Trip this Winter...
The Reggae Marathon - Sure you could explore the island in a rental car, boat, or taxi, but why not see the northern coastline on foot, with the Reggae Marathon and half marathon? A symbolic start featuring pre-dawn torchbearers sends runners on their way as they enjoy the sunrise over Negril's seven-mile strip of beach. Did we mention there are live bands and reggae music at each mile? The race is scheduled for December 5.
Beaches - Why would you come to Jamaica for winter and not spend at least one day on the beach? From walking Seven Mile Beach in Negril, to learning to surf at Boston Bay Beach, there are countless sandy retreats to be enjoyed. Numerous beach bars serve up amazing island drinks that make you truly feel like you are in paradise. If you are lucky, a steel drum or reggae band will be performing relaxing island favorites.
Bobsled Jamaica - Most of us have seen the movie, but did you know we too can experience a Jamaican bobsled run? That's right; a wild rollercoaster-type ride through the Jamaican rainforest sends tourists in one-man sleds through trees, down cliffs, and over 3,000 feet of track. The course can be found at Mystic Mountain in Ocho Rios, and should not be passed up. How many other islands do you know of that offer bobsledding?
Outdoor Adventure - We already mentioned the bobsled run, but there are other unique ways to enjoy the stunning landscape of Jamaica. Hike to secluded waterfalls and rain pools, float on inflatable tubes down rainforest rivers, zip line over green valleys, spelunk the Green Grotto Caves, or ride an off-road vehicle through scenic terrain. Countless tours are available for visitors to book.
Island Village - For those shoppers looking for a collection of souvenir stores, clothing boutiques, duty-free shops, restaurants, and premier people-watching, head to this waterfront complex in Ocho Rios (also conveniently close to the Cruise Ship Pier). Spend some time in the Reggae Museum, or walk to the picturesque white-sand beach.
