Cave Overnight in Idaho: $5 |
Consider it a rustic camping experience, only it takes place inside a man-made cave. For $5/night or $25/month, anyone can stay in a cave built by an 89-year-old retired construction worker in east-central Idaho wilderness. Since 1948, Richard Zimmerman has been building the caves - or carving them out - in a hillside above the Salmon River in Elk Bend, Idaho. His efforts have landed him the unintentionally humorous nickname Dugout Dick. If you go, don't worry that you'll be all alone. Zimmerman lives in one of the caves. Full time.
For guests' comfort, each cave comes with a mattress and wood stove.
Oh, and if you don't want to stay in a cave, Zimmerman offers tours....
