Flying Delta? Head to the Airport Earlier |
As of this morning, Delta Airlines began requiring travelers on domestic flights departing John F. Kennedy International Airport to check bags at least 45 minutes before scheduled departure times. Previously, the rule was 30 minutes before departure. The 45-minute requirement was already in place at Atlanta Hartsfield, Los Angeles, Orlando and Denver International airport. A mere 15 minutes may not seem like a big deal, and it really isn't - unless, of course, you happen to be one of the unlucky travelers who arrives late, gets stuck in a long line and has to send checked bags on a later flight.
I have a money-making scheme for the airlines. Why not charge travelers who arrive late and check bags after the 45-minute cut-off? Clearly the airline has the ability to get bags onto the plane within that amount of time. It just prefers not to, probably because late checked luggage threatens on-time performance. And since we know airlines are always looking for ways to increase revenue...
