HopStop For Big City Transit Planning |
I'm in New York today, trying to establish my plan of attack for navigating the city. Whenever I'm here, it always seems like I end up staying on the Upper West Side with friends, but spend half my time trying to get to the Lower East Side to meet up with my other friends who refuse to leave that end of the city unless threatened with death or dismemberment. So the cross town travel dilemma always rears its ugly head.
In searching for the best route this morning, I found HopStop, an online transit trip planner tool for New York, San Francisco, Boston, Washington DC and Chicago. You can enter your starting point and destination, whether you want to take the bus or underground, and whether you'd prefer more transfers and less walking or more walking and fewer transfers. HopStop gives you a detailed trip plan with maps, distance between stops and - I liked this the most - it even tells you what stops you pass before you have to get off the bus or subway, so you can tell how close you are to your destination stop.
I know there are other trip tools like this out there for all of these cities, but I really liked the HopStop interface and found it really easy to use. I'd recommend it to anyone.
That said, I've decided to take a cab! Hey, I'm a tourist, right?
