Maine vs. New Hampshire: The Showdown |
Tourism officials in Maine have decided their only chance at increasing out-of-towner traffic to their state lies in poaching New Hampshire-bound tourists. Here, the highly sophisticated strategy as explained by one of Maine's hired hands:
"If the overall market isn't expanding, the only way to increase business is to steal it from our competitors," said Rudy Nardelli, account strategist at Warren Kremer Paino Advertising, which has the tourism advertising contract for the Maine Office of Tourism.
But even Maine residents aren't too sure the ad flacks can make that happen:
Dick Hamilton, who spent 35 years running the White Mountains Attractions Association in North Woodstock, said Maine's a beautiful state, but that's about it.
"If you want to watch grass grow, you can go up there. But you can watch grass grow in New Hampshire, too, and you can also go to places like StoryLand, Clark's Trading Post, the Cannon Mountain tramway and the cog Railway. Maine doesn't have anything like that," Hamilton said.
Ouch! But what about L.L. Bean? And, uh, wait, what else is there in Maine again?
