Rule 240 is Your Friend

Daily Candy's weekly travel feature - out earlier this week - highlighted Rule 240, a clause in the fine print of major U.S. airlines' conditions of carriage that, in general, obligates airlines to put passengers on substitute flights even if that means sending them on competitor airlines. Rule 240, which varies slightly from airline to airline, only applies when the canceled flight is the airline's fault. It won't help you with canceled flights due to bad weather or airline strikes, both of the airlines consider "Acts of God" out of their control. Many travel experts suggest that frequent travelers carry printed copies of their airline's Rule 240 with them to show to airline personnel.
