Why Not Russia?

As this story from the Christian Science Monitor points out, Russia is probably one of the least popular tourist destinations in Europe. The writer goes on to explain why the country is a worthy place to visit and explains that the Russian tourism department says poor infrastructure, bad service, high prices and security fears keep Western tourists at bay. I was in Estonia several years back and really wanted to spend a few days in Russia. I didn't. The article doesn't mention the reason that barred me from going: the annoying and expensive visa process. As I recall, I would have had to apply to go and then wait three days to find out whether I would be admitted into the country. For a backpacker, paying for three days' extra accommodation in Tallin, Estonia was what made me decide to turn back. I just didn't want to fork over the extra money and potentially waste three days of my trip. Also, it was freezing. Like really cold. I'm still thawing out, as a matter of fact. Perhaps Russia will become more tourist-friendly in the coming years. Gotta love that architecture in Moscow. And the tundra. Don't forget the tundra. [Source: KWWL]
