World Wiki Travel Guides Launch |
|
Do you a) have an insatiable urge to provide other travelers with "real" info about cities around the world or b) want travel information from "real" people who've been to or live in destinations around the world? Do you love the idea of open source Internet content?
If you had even a tinge of yes-ness to any of the questions above, then you need to check out World Wiki - the newly launched open source travel guide from the creator of Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales.
Although the content is a little thin right now, the idea is an interesting one. Anyone can add and edit information about travel destinations. Users can create their own specialized content (like this page on Rome's churches) or simply add a few details to an already existing page.
For travelers, the site offers yet one more way to access insider information about travel destinations. Some of the content comes from SmarterTravel and other partners, but the bulk of it will be from random users just like you.
My take: I love the idea of open source content, but I also am wary whenever I run across material that no one person or company is responsible for - who ensures that the information is correct and reliable? That said, I use Wikipedia all the time and have found it to be a valuable resource. If this World Wiki can amass as much content as its predecessor, travelers will have an excellent wealth of information that will certainly be worth checking out.
