You should be careful when driving in Latvia, as there is a very high traffic collision rate in the country. You will drive on the right side of the road, which is the same as the U.S. If you are driving during the winter, be careful as roads can get icy and conditions foggy. You should also ask locals about any well-known black ice spots. Drivers are required to have headlights on at all times, even during daylight hours as visibility can deteriorate quickly.
You need to be at least 21 years of age at most rental car companies; however, some agencies will allow you to rent a car as young as 18. If you are under the age of 25, you will normally face a young driver surcharge and also be restricted on the model and type of the car you can get.
A gallon of gas is likely to cost around €6.70 ($7) in Latvia, with a liter costing around €1.8 ($1.90). The currency in Latvia is the Euro, which is valued at about the same as the U.S. dollar. One thing that’s worth remembering is that many of the petrol stations are located in the capital city, Riga, so if you’re heading into the countryside, you should ensure that you have enough fuel to complete the journey.
The speed limits in Latvia are in kilometers per hour, which is different from the U.S. On urban roads, the maximum speed limit is 50 km/h (31 mph). On rural roads, it’s 90 km/h (56 mph). On a motorway it’s 80 km/h (50 mph). There are mobile and fixed-speed cameras in Latvia. If you’re caught speeding, the car hire agency will automatically charge you for the fine and an administrative fee. It will also pass your information on to the local law enforcement.
