The 10 best hotels in Santa Fe

Discover the top hotels in Santa Fe, handpicked by local expert Laura Ratliff.
Laura Ratliff
September 12, 2024

Santa Fe, the oldest capital city in the United States and one of its highest in elevation (Santa Fe sits at a whopping 7,199 feet), epitomizes New Mexico’s tagline: the Land of Enchantment. This historic city, known for its unique blend of cultures, features low-slung, adobe-dressed buildings that seamlessly blend with the natural landscape – an impressive mountain backdrop. My family has lived in Santa Fe on and off for more than 30 years, and its distinct charm, both rustic and refined, makes it one of my favorite cities to spend time in. The city’s hotels reflect its unique character, eschewing cookie-cutter designs for accommodations that blend old and new, large and small. Each hotel on this list embodies an undeniable Southwestern charm. From luxurious resorts to quaint inns, the best hotels in Santa Fe provide a perfect mix of comfort and style, ensuring that every stay is memorable.

1.

The Inn of The Five Graces

Address:

150 East DE Vargas Street

Price:

$727-4809/night

This luxurious boutique property is one of the best hotels in Santa Fe, known for its stunning decor and attention to detail. Set in the Barrio de Analco, one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, the Inn of the Five Graces has a maximalist East-meets-West decor, with suites housing hand-crafted furnishings, vibrant textiles, and intricate mosaics that reflect the cultural tapestry of the Silk Road.

The inn's lush courtyard is where you’ll enjoy breakfast, while Pink Adobe, a Santa Fe favorite since 1944, serves a funky, flavorful blend of Cajun and New Mexican cuisine. Meanwhile, the beautifully restored Dragon Room Bar was supposedly once a haunt of Santa Fe’s beloved Georgia O’Keeffe. I’m particularly partial to the Inn’s compact five-room spa, where a Himalayan saltstone massage will refresh even the most tightly wound guests.

2.

Rosewood Inn Of The Anasazi

Address:

113 Washington Avenue

Price:

$140-4810/night

This elegant hotel is set in the heart of Santa Fe’s downtown,a great option for those looking to be within walking distance of the city’s sights, including the historic Plaza and numerous art galleries.

Named after the ancient Anasazi people, Rosewood’s decor also showcases artwork from top Native American artists. The 58 rooms are beautifully designed, filled with handmade furniture and Native American textiles, as well as cozy kiva fireplaces, which I recommend curling up in front of on a chilly Santa Fe evening.

The on-site Anasazi Restaurant serves up contemporary American cuisine with Southwestern influences, using locally sourced ingredients like elk and duck breast. As one of the best hotels in Santa Fe, you won’t want for amenities during your stay here either, thanks to a well-equipped fitness center and an inviting library.

3.

Hotel Santa Fe

Address:

1501 Paseo De Peralta

Price:

$136-643/night

As the only Native American-owned hotel in downtown, this is one of the best hotels in Santa Fe for those looking to experience authentic Pueblo-style accommodations.

Owned by the Picuris Pueblo, the hotel is deeply rooted in Native American culture and its guestrooms and suites feature traditional Pueblo-inspired elements, like handmade natural pine furniture and local artwork. The Hacienda, a private retreat within the hotel, offers upgraded amenities – think butler service and exclusive access to a private lounge. The hotel's spa, which emphasizes holistic wellness, provides a range of treatments using indigenous ingredients and techniques.

Meanwhile, the on-site restaurant, Amaya, serves straightforward New Mexican cuisine, like stuffed poblano peppers and punchy green chile chicken enchiladas. The hotel is among the most affordable top properties in the city, making it one of the best hotels in Santa Fe for travelers on a budget.

4.

Eldorado Hotel & Spa

Address:

309 West San Francisco Street

Price:

$153-589/night

Santa Fe’s Eldorado Hotel & Spa is a sophisticated property with spacious rooms, a rooftop pool, and an award-winning spa, located just a six-minute walk from the historic Santa Fe Plaza.

As you’ve probably guessed, pueblo revival decor is the trend here, accented with hand-crafted Native American furniture and art. The hotel is home to Agave Restaurant & Lounge, an acclaimed restaurant serving Southwestern food that’s known for being family-friendly and approachable – but don’t worry, dishes still have plenty of New Mexican flair.

A rooftop pool is a rarity in the city and Eldorado’s is excellent, earning the property its rightful spot on any list of the best hotels in Santa Fe. Eldorado is also home to a full-service spa, Nidah, with a menu of Ayurvedic-inspired treatments. Couples and families alike will find Eldorado to be comfortable and upscale without feeling stuffy.

5.

Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado Santa Fe

Address:

198 State Road 592

Price:

$337-2722/night

Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado is one of the best luxury hotels in Santa Fe. It is just outside the city and offers breathtaking views, private casitas, and world-class amenities, all befitting the Four Seasons brand.

Spread across 57 acres of pristine high desert landscape, the resort features 65 spacious casitas, all of which come with private patios, wood-burning fireplaces, and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

The accommodations are elegantly designed, with contemporary Southwestern decor on a clean, white canvas.
The resort's world-class spa is a big draw here, offering a range of treatments inspired by indigenous traditions and designed to target the impacts of Santa Fe’s altitude and high desert environment.

Try incredible regional cuisine at Terra, including hamachi ceviche with ají amarillo pepper agua chile sauce and puffed corn. A dedicated concierge can arrange guided adventures, including hiking, biking, and cultural tours, for outdoor enthusiasts.

6.

Inn & Spa at Loretto

Address:

211 Old Santa Fe Trail

Price:

$176-981/night

The Inn and Spa at Loretto is known for its distinctive architecture, full-service spa, and central location. Inspired by the famed Taos Pueblo, the inn's adobe-style architecture and authentic decor create an inviting and culturally rich atmosphere.

The Loretto Spa is the only resort spa in Santa Fe to create its own custom-crafted essential oil aromatherapy blends, called ‘Spirit of Loretto’. (I’d highly recommend taking some home as a souvenir.) The Loretto’s on-site Luminaria Restaurant is open for three meals a day and serves innovative Southwestern cuisine like a sea bass filet served atop green chile risotto.

Guests can also enjoy a tranquil courtyard, an outdoor heated pool, and a well-equipped fitness center. Located next to the historic Loretto Chapel, with its legendary Miraculous Staircase, the inn also offers easy access to Santa Fe's finest art galleries and boutiques.

7.

Drury Plaza Hotel in Santa Fe

Address:

828 Paseo de Peralta

Price:

$156-576/night

Combining historic charm with modern conveniences, the Drury Plaza Hotel is a comfortable, top-rated property in the heart of downtown Santa Fe. The Drury Plaza sits in a beautifully restored historic building and is home to 182 guestrooms.

With amenities like a complimentary hot breakfast, this is an ideal choice for groups or families. It also has more than 20,000 square feet of meeting space—making this one of the best hotels in Santa Fe for business travelers—and a low-key on-site restaurant, which serves up simple, tasty favorites. Again, this makes the hotel ideal for families, where fussy kids’ preferences come into play.

The Drury Plaza is also within walking distance of Santa Fe's historic Plaza, art galleries, and museums, making it a great base for exploring the city's vibrant cultural scene.

8.

Inn on the Alameda

Address:

303 East Alameda

Price:

$37-725/night

The Inn on the Alameda is hands down one of the best hotels in Santa Fe. The boutique property is home to 72 rooms and suites, with most boasting private balconies or patios, allowing guests to make the most of the serene garden courtyards, crisp mountain air and piñon-wood burning fireplaces.

Start your day with a complimentary breakfast buffet and finish it at Joe’s Tequila Bar, named for the hotel’s founder and long-time owner, Joe Schepps – there you’ll find plenty of agave-based drinks, paired with dishes like carne asada and chipotle shrimp.

Located just a short stroll from Canyon Road’s renowned art galleries, the historic Plaza, and numerous dining options, the Inn on the Alameda provides an ideal base for experiencing the city’s rich cultural heritage.

9.

La Fonda On The Plaza

Address:

100 East San Francisco Street

Price:

$165-941/night

Clocking in at 102 years old, La Fonda on the Plaza is an iconic hotel in the heart of Santa Fe, offering a blend of historic charm and modern luxury. Set on the site of the city’s first inn, La Fonda reflects the region's Spanish and Native American influences in its 180 guestrooms and suites. The hotel also has a swimming pool and a fitness center.

La Plazuela, the hotel’s signature restaurant, is well-known for its excellent tortilla soup, among other contemporary New Mexican dishes. Meanwhile, the seasonal Bell Tower Bar offers the perfect spot for cocktails while watching the sunset from five stories up. One of my favorite souvenirs from recent years is from Tom Taylor, a renowned silversmith with a boutique in La Fonda. His hand-crafted belts and buckles are on the pricy side, but they’re a lovely way to take home a piece of the city.

10.

Bishop's Lodge Auberge Resorts Collection

Address:

1297 Bishops Lodge Road

Price:

$562-3181/night

Located on the outskirts of Santa Fe, Bishop’s Lodge is set in the foothills of the picturesque Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Here, you’ll feel like you’re at a genuine Southwestern lodge, despite being just minutes from downtown's action. Once the private retreat of Santa Fe’s first archbishop, this historic property has been thoughtfully reinvented with 100 different accommodations, ranging from beautifully appointed guestrooms and suites to private casitas.

Interiors feature Native American art, hand-crafted furnishings, and traditional Southwestern decor. One thing that sets Bishop’s Lodge apart from many of the other best hotels in Santa Fe is the wide range of activities on offer, from horseback riding and hiking to fly fishing. Meanwhile, the spa’s holistic wellness treatments are inspired by indigenous traditions, and dining at SkyFire showcases wood-fired Southwestern cooking at its finest.
