Pros: Very friendly and helpful host. The rooms are even more beautiful than displayed on the website. The beds and bedding are of good quality. The garden is beautiful, the area is quiet. We really enjoyed our stay and will use them again in future.
Pros: Greeted by very friendly, helpful host, for whom nothing was too much trouble. Excellent suggestions for restaurants to eat at (N.B. you will need a car or taxi) - the Portuguese was fantastic. Very secure site, in a good area, with pretty grounds, and comfortable homely charm; and a tasty filling breakfast.
Cons: Load-shedding (or planned power-cuts), but this is true of the whole of South Africa, and Patrick warned us of the timings, and also has a generator - so there is little impact !!
Pros: A very comfortable stay in a lovely B&B, superbly located in Pietermaritzburg, with gorgeous gardens.
Cons: Place is awesome
Pros: Received friendly and clean and neat property. Definitely value for money. Beautiful garden
Pros: Great breakfast. Enjoyed walking the beautiful PMB Botanical Gardens just down the road.
With a stay at Ascot Inn in Pietermaritzburg, you'll be within a 5-minute drive of Comrades Marathon House and Scottsville Racecourse. Free self parking is available onsite.
Pros: The Aircon and Wifi is brilliant.
Cons: They could have a small selection for dinner instead of only one choice which is a bit pricey.
Pros: The general facilities were good as was the breakfast
Cons: Despite booking a non-smoking room the first room allocated did bear a no smoking sign but the room was permeated with the smell of tobacco smoke which necessitated a second room being allocated. The prescripts of the Tobacco Control Act are not adhered to as the undercover walkways are set up to facilitate smoking (e.g. ashtrays are provided) as opposed to bearing prescribed signage to prohibit smoking in enclosed or partially enclosed public places. Non smoking guests are consequently forced to run the gauntlet of persons smoking in these areas. It should be mentioned that these failures to comply with the legislation render the person in control of the premises liable to a carry a potential fine of R 50 000.
Pros: the room number 26 was fantastic

Pros: The breakfast was fine. I think fried eggs must be made on order not before ( because they tend to harden). Filtered coffee would be nice than instant coffee. The rooms were nice and cool ( thanks to the fan). Linen clean.
Cons: Brown bath towels in the bathroom. Can B& Bs stay away from that.

Cons: - Wi fi poor and erratic - Rooms far from parking, reception and restaurant
Pros: The lounge and the breakfast room
Cons: The stench from the factory, it was really awful you couldn't open the window also the whole night wars very loud i couldn't sleep at all. And car park is far away from the hutt. There was someone bringing you luggage to the hut, but our Backpackers didn't fit on this little car. And if you forget something you have to walk a lot to bring your stuff up and down. Lights were very dim, so you could not read when it was dark.
Pros: I usually book in urban areas so staying in a chalet with a bundu feel was a different and refreshing experience. The bed was so comfortable and I also loved the fact that the chalets are individually located hence I had my own private space.
Cons: The frog sound from the ponds was too loud and interrupted my sleep.

Pros: breakfast was very disappointing and the setting as a whole was horrible to such an extent that there was a cat present whilst we had breakfast
Cons: food, table set up , the presence of the pet , standard of cleanliness lacked drastically and the fact that the bedding was not changed and the condition of the towels .

Pros: I loved the setting outside and inside the room and the owner is such a great person, she is like family. Great service.

With a stay at Sunbird Guest House in Howick, you'll be within a 10-minute drive of Howick Golf Club and Howick Museum. Featured amenities include a 24-hour front desk and coffee/tea in a common area. Free self parking is available onsite.
Cons: Excellent. Stunning venue with super friendly host. Would recommend to anyone and definitely visit again
Pros: We had a very warm welcome. The hosts were very friendly.
Pros: This accomodation was incredible. I stayed in a beautifully renovated old train car that the host Eva and her son had worked hard to transform into a lovely living space. There were so many small touches, like the stained glass windows, copper piping covering over all electric wiring, and clever re-use of the original luggage racks, which made it a wonderfully unique place to spend the night. I came as a solo traveller just passing through and was so pleased that the host was welcoming and keen to share a bit of her story with me as well.
Pros: Comfortable bed
Cons: Struggled to get hot shower water. Happy that they attended to me timeously

Located in Pietermaritzburg, Valley Vista Lodge is within a 5-minute drive of Pietermaritzburg City Hall and Tatham Art Gallery. Featured amenities include dry cleaning/laundry services and laundry facilities. Free self parking is available onsite.
Pros: The view ! The covered parking. Good location. Private, secluded.
Pros: Very pleasant stay in a large comfortable room with an amazing view. Great breakfast.
Cons: Nothing really...
Pros: Wonderful place to stay; friendly, welcoming staff and amazing views. Definitely will stay again.
Pros: Where to start? The location is excellent. I booked one of the mini-chalets. The morning views from the chalet's balcony were incredible. The whole place gives the impression of being an island in a nature reserve: Birdlife everywhere. I opted for breakfast included and that was the best plan. A huge buffet selection with the staff more than happy to prepare freshly cooked items as well. Breakfast could be had out on the balcony to enjoy the views there too. As an aside, the location is just down the road from a small, modern shop centre that allows you to pop out to get stuff to self-cater should you wish.
Cons: At the Lodge? No issues, but... Due to flooding up North (see Dec-2019 news coverage) city-wide electricity outages occurred a couple of times per day. The Lodge has an efficient generator and that resolved that. I do understand that power outages are rare, it is something to factor in (keep laptop and phones charged).
Pros: The view is awesome. Quiet and just breathtaking.
Cons: The room. Could do with some maintenance
Pros: Exclusive, private and homely
Cons: Steep hill. Am not fit.
Pros: Professional exceptional service, would highly recommend,
Cons: All super,

Featured amenities include complimentary newspapers in the lobby, dry cleaning/laundry services, and a 24-hour front desk. Free self parking is available onsite.
Pros: The room space and decoration. The friendly and efficient staff. The clean pool.
Cons: The view from my window.
Pros: Tidy, spacious, clean, private and upmarket
Cons: Breakfast stuff in dining hall left open, with flies on the food
Pros: Central, in a nice area of Pietermaritzburg and safe. Convenient if you don’t want to book into a B&B
Cons: When we arrived there was no one at reception, I eventually called someone from the back office who told me the front desk manager would be through in 5mins. Was not a great check-in experience. Similar experience on check-out. Got into our room and found ants all over the window sill, but the worst was a used glass lying in the sink which looked like someone had spat in it. On our way out a cockroach scurried along the floor in the hallway. The hotel is dated and in need of a refurb. I would recommend booking into a charming B&B rather than using this hotel.
Pros: Professional, spacious rooms. There was confusion with our booking, but it was dealt with very efficiently.

Pros: The beds are very comfortable
Cons: The toilet is with the shower and there is no door that separates the room from the shower area. A closed door could do
Pros: The setting out
Cons: If they can have something to drink like soft drinks
Pros: The comfort
Pros: The place, the owner and the team as a whole
Cons: Nothing, everything was perfect
Pros: It's a small hotel in a small town, you can't expect everything! But the rooms were clean, the lights and electricity worked, the WiFi was less hassle than in larger hotels, so little to complain about!
Cons: The hotel is a bit out of the way. You have to have a car (or someone who meets you), you can't expect to walk from the hotel to the attractions of Howick (such as they are...)

Featured amenities include luggage storage and coffee/tea in a common area. A roundtrip airport shuttle is provided for a surcharge (available on request), and free self parking is available onsite.
Pros: Very safe place to stay with enough secure parking. The breakfast was exceptional, especially Trevor's omelettes! Will definitely stay here again if we need place to stay in Pietermaritzburg! Thank you Trevor & Gill for assisting me so late at night with a place to stay.
Cons: Nothing not to like...
Pros: friendly hosts
Pros: Upon arrival my room my changed to a smaller one without my concern plus I got served stale bread for breakfast. The drainage system of the shower was very poor which made it unpleasant to shower
Cons: Being served fresh bread and not so burnt beacon.
Pros: It was a pleasant home stay, but expensive for what was on offer. The location was perfect for us as we were staying close to friends. There was nothing wrong with it per se, but nothing to particularly rave about either. We did go back for a second night at the end of our trip to KZN as it was convenient to our friends and price aside, there was nothing particularly wrong.
Cons: Pricing was high for the facilities. There was no water or milk in the fridge. The bathroom was minimalist. The property is in need of some TLC, but nothing terrible. Just very ordinary and the website made it appear that it was going to be quite an upmarket place. We did go back for a second night, but although we paid for breakfast, we were told we had to eat before 7am because the relief manager was going to work. We had no desire to get up to eat at that time as we were on holiday and there was no offer of a refund for the breakfast. Neither were we told when we booked in again that there would be a time limit like that.
Pros: The place was clean and cozy
Cons: I like everything about that place very clean and quiet. The host is very friendly.
Pros: Breakfast was excellent. Location was good.
Cons: The Wifi signal for the furthest room was weak.

Pros: Easy to find. Nice and spacious. The room was great. We had all the amenities we needed. Neat. The hosts were always around to help
Pros: The gardens, swimming pool and their staff were exceptional I really enjoyed my stay.
Pros: I liked the location. It's very central and safe. The hosts are very helpful and accommodating.
Cons: Usually at a self catering facility, you get coffee, sugar, tea, cereal and sometimes milk. However, we were only given enough for one day. When asked for more, we were provided with more.
Pros: The bed was super comfy and the room was super clean
Pros: Everything about the guesthouse
