the rooms were far too hot.
Breakfast not being included in the room rate
Comfortable room and facilities with easy and central access to Exeter city centre. no need for taxis. Staff on check in could have been easier to deal with.
good clean hotel if a little dated. friendly staff .close to city centre and also exeter quay which was excellent added bonus of free parking prices of drinks and breakfast was a little extortionate
I loved the whole time at Mercure and will recommend your hotel to my friends, lovely atmosphere, great decor and facilities, made use of the pool, jacuzi and sauna. Enjoyed a well presented and tasty meal and will try the breakfast next time.
Very welcoming/ staff very helpful, polite. Very tasteful decor. Food excellent. No
Classy environment, comfortable beds, good staff, excellent breakfast choice, good secure car parking Dinner menu is over-priced but otherwise acceptable.
easy parking near Hotel room quality substandard
Leaving I specifically confirmed with staff on booking about the availability of parking - this is why I booked your hotel. On arrival there was no parking and this caused me to miss a very important meeting, as well as completely messing up my entire stay.
Beautiful surroundings. Peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. A real treat.
The bastle itself, the large surroundings, the Space of the Roms and the leisure Roms. The Staff was Professional but very "Cold". They seemed to be unhappy.
I was not impressed that, on the first day of our stay at a hotel which boasts of great dining (a Tuesday), the 'Edwardian' dining room was closed and the alternative was only open to formal, suit-wearing customers. None of this was mentioned on the hotel website, nor this one. The food in the 'bistro' was poor although the service was great.
The excellent comfort, attention and respect; the splendid facilities, the setting and environment and the friendly, helpful Staff.
We attended a Wedding here and it was very well run, 112 guests well served in the dining room.
can't fault it. a fantastic hotel in a fantastic location. the attention to detail for is great, champagn on arrival, umbrella and welly boots for country walks, loads of facilities. the complimentary wine tasting is a great way to start your evening.
Beautiful setting. Hotel is being refurbished. Areas that should have been blocked off, weren'T. No directions from room to reception..so couldnt help but trick across the areas being refurbished when trying to find your way around!
It was spacious and clean Small point however, television small and poor signal
We loved the location, the atmosphere, the ambiance, the service, the geographical position,a truly wonderful experience. Fine dining was not what we expected, and room facility surcharges were a big surprise on the final bill.
We enjoyed absolutely everything about our stay at Bovey Castle - the luxury without the stuffiness, the friendly, helpful staff, all the facilities and........ the cream tea! We were surprised, however, not to see a bottle of prosecco on the wine list!
Comfortable bed; polite, friendly staff Towel rail didn't seem to be working, even when I found where to switch it on!
... after a night out we returned to hotel & decided to have a night cap @ bar. The bar man (Andy) was particularly friendly & professional. We had mentioned not having a kettle in the room, which we had thought was odd & in the morning there was a note under the door, explaining that the kettle was kept in a drawer! There are not many staff who would've bothered and we were very impressed by this personal attention to our enquiry, it made all the difference to our stay. All staff were friendly but he was particularly good. The bed was very comfortable. The room was a little tatty & in need of modernising. At first glance we could see that two single beds had been pushed together to make a double (despite having booked a double room), however this wasn't a particularly bad point as it meant the bed was massive! (A valance on the bed would've easily disguised this & not made it so obvious) The price list of food seemed very over priced £12.95 for burger & chips! For that price we would've expected very good food indeed but we were put off eating in the hotel because of the pricing so can not comment on its standards.
Nice Building, good location Couldnt find my reservation, 1st room we were given had not been cleaned and breakfast poor quality
The breakfast was very varied and good
everything was just perfect.
Newly decorated room was excellent - beds extremely comfortable Bars and restaurant (both decor and breakfast) did not match quality of rooms
Friendly staff , clean and good food. A lot of early morning outside noise.
Great location for exploring Exeter and it's surrounding areas Inconvenient parking arrangements.
A beautiful building - lovely staircase and stained-glass windows. Very welcoming, friendly staff. Good breakfast. The walls are very thin - could hear every noise from the corridor and next rooms. The car park is very tiny and difficult to get in and out of.
The attention of the front desk personnel was outstanding, courteous and attending to my needs. I arrived late at night and was treated with excellence. The interior layout is complicated and there are insufficient signs to indicate the way to rooms, lifts and escape.
Used for a weekend trip. rooms clean and comfortable. Staff were helpful when called upon. Hotel was full but not busy. No on site carparking although just in front and to the rear there were NCP car parks for which there was a 25% discount for hotel users. Bar prices as usual for hotels on the high side. Bar closed early even to residents.
Location, close to city centre
Close to the shops and restaurants, in walking distance. Cleanliness of the hotel rooms. Pleasant staff.
Staff friendly and helpful to foreigners. Patient and informative. We ordered food from the restaurant to our room but was told to bring our food to our room ourselves which we did. However, we later saw food being delivered to other guests room on the same day at a later time.
This served our purpose which was a comfortable room and breakfast. The staff were hard working and polite.
Clean comfortable quiet room, convenient for visit. Service in restaurant very un attentive.
Central, cheap, clean, comfortable Being woken by an outrageously loud alarm very early on Sunday morning!!!! And then again about an hour later!!!! We assumed that it was a test of the fire alarm (or false-alarm), but were not given any further information an apology. Also the bar closed very early.
Friendly Receptionist and comfortable, well appointed rooms.
Walking distance to the city centre which was great for nights out, easy to bring a car and have easy access to coast/countryside. Best of city/beach break. Great value for money, very nice hotel. Room cleaners come round very early as there are a mix of people in the hotel. It's Ok for business guests, but those wanting a lie in are woken up.
Nice and close to the center of town Good Breakfast
the room was surprisingly large and well equipped considering it was at the lower end of the price market
large room and clean.
Comfortable and clean accommodation with all modern facilities Cooked breakfast not good - not topped up regularly - ran out on numerous occasions
There was no limit on check-in time - I was travelling a long way to get there Not a complaint as I had no time to use them, but I prefer a hotel to have a gym or a swimming pool or both.
Good size room. Good breakfast buffet. New room was good but the bedhead light fitting was noisy during the night after it had been switched off, (cooling down?)
Nice room. Took too long for the room to warm up.
location. Near to Exeter Airport.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Very good location with free parking just of the motorway and across from Park and Ride bus to city centre. The heating in the room was very inadequate. However, when this was brought to the attention of staff before our last night they provided a stand alone heater.
The hotel provided an excellant overnight stopover for a very early flight from Exeter airport which is just over five minutes drive away.
cleanest hotel of recent ones silly point but that Dove hand soap in the bathroom is really hard to get out of the dispenser
Comfortable room, courteous staff, clean and functional. Excellant breakfast. The bar was comfortable but the large screen television we found rather intrusive, although we could well be in the minority.
heating was on
Friendly helpful reception that provided the tourist information we wanted and advice for the cold weather. Very unusually, there were no faults at all in the room! The food was poor and the waiter, though friendly, clearly had no training in customer service. Choice for vegetarians almost non-existent.
Shower was hopeless
Easy access to major road system. Pleasant surroundings, very friendly, attentive but not pushy staff, good food nicely presented. The shower curtain didn't prevent water soaking the floor and this left a damp smell in the bathroom.
The Rooms were clean, tidy and comfortable and the venue perfect for my trip. Breakfast although good with good service the Sausages were the worst I have eaten.
Good location, friendly staff, good food, warm and comfortable.
I thought the service was exceptional I arrived at nine thirty and asked if there was food available, the staff said kitchen did close at mine thirty but would ask the chef if hecwould wait a few mins, I checked in ordered my food. Not many places would put themselves out like that. It was greatly appreciated and u wouldn't stay anywhere else in. Exeter now and would highly recommend it to my friends.
They have a nice chef and his cooking is out of this world Recently my new improvements to bar/dinning area Car park too much gravel hurts the bottom of your feet, some rooms are dated but improvements are underway
Just comfortable.... The meals were a little spartan with portion control..and took a while for them to be served
The room and view were lovely. The food was excellent. City was very close but not intrusive - no general city noise or traffic. While the wooden floors looked very nice they are noisy and there was the sound of footfalls from the room above.
The setting, the staff, the breakfast. I had a very noisy neighbourh who was talking very loudly until around 2am. I accept that I didn't tell the staff at the time nor did I tell them in the morning (I think I was bribed by the lovely surroundings)
Staff were very helpful Room was comfortable Toiletries quirky and in large sizes Tuck Box items were very reasonably priced
It was very clean hotel No parking
room very good and restaurant exceptional. Very well looked after room a bit noisy as near stairs plus access to the hotel not easy for a first time visitor. The need to phone ahead and arrage to drop off bags was not in the original notes as hotel has no parking.
Wonderful location in city centre.
The bed was amazing very big and comfy! Wonderful views over the Cathedral and the food in the restaurant was really special. Great location for shopping too. No on-site parking but good rates at near by car park. No proper seating area in room when included in booking description. Room would benefit from fresh coat of paint but good size and clean. Function on Saturday night was very loud in our room but did stop promptly at 12.
Staff were accomodating and proactively helpful. Re. Room 113 - The sink is just not usable. The bowl is too small and the shelf defeats any attempt at access.
Modern, friendly hotel in terrific location. Room was very small and would be adequate for 1 person but not a couple.
Access to city. The large size bed. The parking arrangements. The price of the restaurant.
The location and breakfasts were particularly good. There was an air of an upmarket timeshare about the place, particularly the reception area and the restaurant. The mattresses were too soft for my liking, and also too thin.
The overall stay was lovely. A nice, clean room with an amazing shower. We received a few odd comments from staff, maybe they're just a little too honest to customers.
Comfortable,clean,and very spacious room,friendly staff,and excellent Breakfast
Very nice hotel. I was only there for one night, but it was an enjoyable stay.
relaxed atmosphere, yet efficient
Ability to relax in stress free surroundings and partake in sports/fitness facilities. Staff were cheerful and helpful. Good room overlooking golf course but very early morning vehicle engine noise (6 to 630 am) As above
Staff were fantastic
Comfortable, quiet, good leisure facilities The restaurant delay on the first night was unaccceptable. We were told there was a slight delay at 8.45pm - if we had been told we would have to wait for an hour before receiving food we would have gone out to eat - we had to wait more than 1 1/2 hours before eating. Yes there were quite alot of people eating but the maitre de should have been more honest.
The cooked breakfast was not too good
We loved the beautiful staircase and atmospheric log fires. Waking up to birdsong and getting right away from the rush and hustle of city life. Our mews rooms were clean, comfortable and had terrific character. The bed was very comfortable. The food at dinner was terrific and well served. There was a lighter room service menu but we would have liked this to be available some evenings in the main hotel. We enjoyed the walk down to the river despite being rather damp underfoot because of recent flooding. The staff were very responsive and did their best to put any niggles right. The rate we paid was very competitive, but we would have thought it was overpriced at the full rate. What a shame all the meals were served in a dining room where the wonderful views were completely blocked by a marquee. This was especially annnoying as the hotel was not busy and there were other dining areas available which were not used. Our mews rooms were cold and the radiators turned on and off by a timer with no access to turn them on at other times. A fan was supplied but this was noisy and quickly became stuffy. The shower head would not stay on and the bath was deep, narrow and difficult to get out of. The hot water was scalding in our room and only lukewarm in our son's room across the corridor. Access road was long, rough, muddy and very potholed.
The sporting memorabilia was interesting to see and read. There are many parts of the hotel which are in a poor state of repair and it was not heated well considering the time of year. Access to the hotel is potholed and likely to do damage to ones car if not careful.
A lovely country house hotel with bags of original features, yet with all the comfort one could possibly expect. Would definitely stay again. I found the whole experience very relaxing and luxurious. Didn't like the toilet being separate from main bathroom. No shower either.
The charm of the place. A place you can hide away from the hustle and bustle of everyday living. Good cooked English breakfast for those who are not veggi. Staff willing and did provide eggs, beans, toms and mushrooms. Overall we had a lovely stay and would go back at sometime if the place had a refit and new beds and linen. Room very out dated. Old quilts and mattress. Hand held shower, impossible to have a descent shower especially if you have trouble sitting in the bath. Also suggest a new white toilet seat as it was very old. I would like to suggest too (as I was a little disappointed) that they serve everyday, as there was no fresh berry fruits, natural yogurt and croissants.. You do not always want, orange juice, apple juice, tinned prunes and tinned grapefruit More variety definitely needed.
Excellent food, friendly staff, amazing location. However, we were told on internet that only one room was available. When we got there the hotel was virtually empty. Poor dribbly shower. Overall the hotel is in need of refurbishment
This is a delightful country house hotel that oozes old fashioned charm. The walls are adorned with historic paintings and sports memorabilia. Within the extensive grounds there are ample sports facilities for all the family with lovely walks along the banks of the River Otter. Great breakfasts, friendly staff and rewarding retreat for nature lovers.
Good location, friendly helpful staff, food excellent, good fresh ingredients. Overall a pleasant hotel. The matress on the bed far to soft.
We were only there for one night, but it was very comfortable, the staff were helpful and pleasant. Good choice of breakfasts, from the normal full English to haddock and poached egg etc. The bar was kept open until the early hours so we could have a nightcap when we got back that evening, but no noise or anything like that. I think this hotel would be lovely in the summer with the grounds and outside tables, they also have a swimming pool which looked like it would be nice. not really.
The hotel was a slightly eccentic charming country hotel, set in superb grounds. The staff and service were excelent - as was the food.
Very Quiet, Scenic Access roads very poor - single track poorly maintained Some facilities in room did not work Other facilities not looked after well
By far the best thing about my stay was the breakfast! All the food was locally sourced and the bacon, sausage and eggs were exceptional.
Convienient and quiet
To be honest I found the hotel very old fashioned and in dire need of modernisation. I could not open my bedroom window, one of the curtains was partly off the rail, the tv tuned into CBeebies and not much else, I struggled to get an internet connection from my room and the avocado bathroom had a loose hot tap on the basin. The bar had no atmosphere at all .... there was a tv there but it was not switched on for some reason. There was a strange musty smell about the bar and lounge area. Not sure how the hotel qualifies for its AA 3* rating
Relaxed surroundings, Great staff
Menu and food better than expected
The staff where excellent and where very helpful. The room looks a bit tired and need abit of a makeover The room itself looks old fashion but good value for money
Nothing On entering the bathroom I was confronted by a dirty toilet bowl (without going in to detail). I am not sure the towels had been changed The room was cold and I was unable to heat the room The wifi would not work
Staff are friendly and the hotel is pleasant
We were not too impressed whent he fire alarm went off at 7am and we could hear our neighbouring room playing thier music very loudly from early in the morning which kept us up. So although comfort and facuilities were more than adequate the nooise control could have been better
The room and the hotel staff The restaurant
Location great. Spacious room. Excellent breakfast. On the whole most of the staff were friendly except the bar maid who seemed in a permanent grump. Needs urgent updating throughtout hotel. Need to fix lift especially when you have a baby to carry to the top floor.
peace and quiet.not harassed by anyone. parking is a bit tight and could do with a few more spaces.
the food was bad . the bar wasnt open when advertized
The view and it had gym few broken items in room and hallways were a bit smelly. Not enough parking
Restaurant was good and reasonably priced. Hotel staff very polite and helpful. No complaints whatsoever. Value for money.
Getting a two bedroomed suite for the price of a single room in comparable hotels/ Excellent views - nice public areas, pool and spa facilities Lift was very small and slow.
location. insufficient parking spaces.
very good no
