Overview Reviews
With a stay at The Place at Evoramonte in Estremoz, you'll be 0.1 mi (0.1 km) from Evora Monte Castle and 18.5 mi (29.7 km) from University of Evora.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The highlight of our trip to Portugal was our time in The Place at Evoramonte. Vicki and Mitch were such warm and friendly hosts we immediately felt at home there. Even though they are busy with the guest house and cafe Vicki gave us lots of helpful attention. The beautiful stone building has been refurbished to a very high quality and has all the comforts one could ask for. Everything was spotlessly fresh and clean. The character of the home is enhanced by all the books and artwork collected from around the world. We did enjoy settling in to the cosy lounge at the end of the day with our maps and guide books or relaxing on the rooftop deck overlooking the castle. We chose to have dinner on the terrace rather than drive down the hill to the village and will always remember enjoying Mitch's pizza while taking in the spectacular view. A delicious breakfast began our day with a lovely assortment of breads, pastries, cereals, yogurt and fruit with fresh orange juice. The complete peace and tranquility at The Place was lovely after a long overseas journey and left us refreshed for the adventures to come. Though quiet, there is plenty to see in the area so we felt we had the best of both worlds.
Cons: Didn't want to leave.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Outstanding! Vicky and Mitch are wonderfull hosts: attentive and very friendly. During all stay we felt the necessary privacy , tranquility and had all necessary help when we needed. Evoramonte is very well placed , it is possible in 2,3 days discover many wonderfull villages/cities near: evora, arraiolos, estremoz, vila viçosa, elvas, borba,... Watching the sunset, Sleeping and taking the breakfast at the "top of Alentejo" with a fantastic landscape in front of us, and hearing and watching the swallows flying is ... priceless! We recommend the excellent meals at a restaurant down in the village (15/20m by walk, good for digestion :) We promise to comeback one day for another fantastic experience. Dear Vicky and Mitch, thank you for all!
Cons: The weather was very hot during our stay ,so an outdoor pool would be the icing on the cake :)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Stay here instead of Evora! Can’t say enough good things about The Place at Evoramonte ....beautiful decor, super clean, top shelf linens and a fabulous view from every room terrace. It’s very peaceful and quiet. The cafe is a bonus to enjoy a meal or just a glass of wine along with the fab view. Vicki and Mitch it was so nice to meet you. You are so welcoming and we feel that you have put your heart and soul into creating a wonderful place to stay.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Nice continental breakfast with fresh local products. You could eat on the terrace with spectacular views . Good tea and coffee. Helpful and really friendly hosts. You feel welcome and like at home the moment you arrive. Parking was no problem.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Where else can you live next door to a 12th century fortress, with a panoramic view of half of Portugal, and the most stunning sunsets imaginable? The small but beautiful room is cozy and comfortable. Add to that the warm, personable, and friendly owners, and the best coffee in Alentejo.
Herdade Ribeira de Borba - Vila Viçosa - Bedroom

9.4 Excellent (292 reviews)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We stayed in Casa de Azenha and it was a beautiful, spacious and very well decorated house. There were 4 of us and we fitted in perfectly. The house had all we needed for a short stay, including a kitchenette with basic kitchen tools. The outdoors jacuzzi and surrounding views allowed a very relaxing holiday. Take the chance to look at the starry sky in Alentejo at night, its absolutely worth it! Breakfast was delivered to us in a basket left by Sra. Antónia at our door and it was super delicious! At the time of check in we were also given some suggestions of local restaurants which we tried and were total up to the quality of alentejan food. The house is very close to Vila Viçosa which is a beautiful town with a lot of history.
Cons: The bathroom is a beautiful spacious place in the house, however the open shower leaves the whole floor wet which can be a bit messy. Some of the plugs in the house did not work.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was amazing, with the option of receiving it in your room or go to the guest lounge. The entire property is a small nirvana where you can enjoy nature, relax and get a really nice tan! We utterly enjoyed it and we will go back!
Cons: Nothing to point out.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Quiet quiet quiet. Feels like you have the entire place for yourself, even though it is fully booked. Great to have the children around and leave them be.
Cons: All was perfect. Nothing to report here.

Pros: The breakfast was good lots of choices to eat. Location is good in the town but to get to Evora it takes about 30 to 40 mins on the motorway. We would like stay again but not on a Sunday as most of the vineyards are closed.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This small luxury hotel in the lovely town of Vila Viçosa is a great choice. From the welcome drink to the spa facilities and the lavish buffet breakfast you will be happy you stayed. The modern sophisticated design along with the abundant use of marble in both the rooms and public areas reflect the grandeur of this marble town. In our case, we were celebrating our anniversary and we’re given a decanter of their white gold fortified wine along with some lovely biscuits. The Spa and Turkish Bath were also a great way to cap our day. So enjoyable you might not want to leave!

Pros: Nice room and shower. Very friendly people working in the hotel Best service (we left something with value in the room and they sent it back to us)
Cons: Some busy days the breakfast was out of fresh fruit and other stuff

Pros: The hosts were amazing and also the gardens were something special! We enjoyed the breakfast very much and also had a night of playing pool in the sala de jogos. Unfortunately my travel partner got a little bit sick but Isabel immediately offered some medicine so we wouldn't have to go to the pharmacy. She really went the extra mile with everything and also showed us around on the property. The shower was amazing. AAAAAnd also we fell in love with the amazing house dog who greeted us every morning and accompanied us to breakfast :)
Cons: The room was a little bit dark and chilly. That would not usually be a problem but we were unlucky with the weather and got a little bit sick so we spent more time in the room than we normaly would. Still recommend it to everyone in this area!

Featured amenities include dry cleaning/laundry services, luggage storage, and laundry facilities. A roundtrip airport shuttle is available for a surcharge.
7.9 Good
Pros: Beautiful renovation of an incredible grande home, retaining some of the old world architectural charm within a handsome, contemporary space. Its upbeat ambiance harmonizes wonderfully well with the exceptionally friendly staff. Excellent location: just a minute from the city's famed castle and historic palace.
Cons: Great to have an outdoor pool in summer, but it is certainly on the small side. While the breakfast buffet is nice (wonderful decor), food selection could be enhanced/expanded. Piping hot coffee would also be a welcome refinement. Having at least 1 major international news channel with English language option (e.g., CNN, BBC, Sky News, etc.) available in the hotel's guest rooms, without having to go downstairs to the lovely living room, where the community TV provides scores of international news channels (in multiple languages), would be a much-appreciated enhancement.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly and helpful staff. Allowed us to safely store our bicycles inside. Lovely room with large patio window to let in the light. Great breakfast. Location is just around the corner from the palace and within walking distance of all the other sites.
Cons: Nothing. Everything was excellent!

Pros: The staff, in particular Ines, was exceptional in assisting us in translating from English when my husband fell ill. Our room was clean and quiet. We really enjoyed the breakfast and location and we would recommend to family and friends.
Cons: Tea and coffee making facilities were not available in the room, however they were available from the bar.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing breakfast, location and hospitality!
Monte Da Azarujinha - Azaruja - Building
8
9.5 Excellent (37 reviews)
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The peace and quiet atmosphere felt at the property. The architecture and ambience of the room and common areas. The property dog, Saca! Super friendly and funny! :)
Cons: The fact that there was only a curtain in the bathroom. The wifi signal was not that strong in the room.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: A rustic, minimalist country retreat with whitewashed walls and a beautiful layout. So calm--we slept with our door open and woke up to the tinkling of the bells worn by the local cattle and sheep. The pool was gorgeous, clean, and it was so relaxing to look out at the expanse of the countryside. The shower was great, much appreciated after a long day on the road! We did not use the main house except to eat breakfast, (which was delicious), but, it, too, is beautifully designed. Carlos and Almerinda were wonderful hosts, engaging and helpful. Though no restaurants to speak of are nearby, the roads to Evora were good and it was easy to get to and from the town for sightseeing and dinners.
Cons: No door on the bathroom, just a curtain, which was not much privacy in such a small room. But it was in keeping with the minimalist ethos, I suppose.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The Hosts where absolutely lovely and catered to our ever need! The dogs where beautiful and gentle! The entire stay was perfect and made more perfect by the extra care given to us by the fantastic hosts!
Cons: We loved everything! It could not have been more idilic. Only one thing, the plastic water bottles in the rooms, which where very thoughtful could have been in simple glass/reusable ones as it’s more eco friendly and fits better into the ethos of the house.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: After spending time in Lisbon, we were looking for a peaceful retreat on a minimalist property in the country side, and it was certainly that. The pool was refreshing, and there was always plenty of space between us and the other guests. If you're have fan of dogs, you'll absolutely adore the owner's two German Shepards, who were always extremely friendly and eager for pats! The owners were very kind to recommend restaurants and experiences in surrounding towns (we visited a local farmer's market on Saturday); they were also kind to accommodate different times for breakfast with advanced notice. We slept with our door open (went in mid-June), and it so lovely to wake up to birds chirping and the sun coming in each morning. We ended our stay with a picnic close to the pool; they have picnic tables with a hammock on the property. And perhaps the highlight of our stay was how clear the night sky was. If you're a star gazer, you're in for a real treat! We look forward to returning and would recommend this gem of a spot to any of our friends.
Cons: We have no complaints. We noticed folks tend to complain about the bathroom: particularly that there isn't a door but rather a curtain. This didn't bother us but stands true.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is really an exceptional place to stay. Beautiful spacious rooms, excellent breakfast, very kind host, fantastic garden,... all designed and decorated in a wonderful way. Whether you want to relax on the premises or explore the region, it really is a perfect place!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great host and amazing property!
Cons: Nothing...
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything:) The place is amazing. Super well cared. The pool, the environment, the room... Everything was perfectly rebuilt and used. We loved every single detail. The breakfast is great and Mrs. Orlanda is such a nice host. We will come back, for sure!
Cons: Not staying longer :) Everything was perfect!
7.5 Good
Cons: Specifically...the description and photographs were misleading. The property was more akin to a bohemian hideaway than a perceived high quality, highly specified and stylish facility. There was an air of "tiredness" and, in areas..particularly outside..a lack of perceived maintenance and upkeep...perhaps this was, in fact, what the proprietor was actually intending...but...certainly not what we expected from the relatively HIGH PRICE asked and the description and photographs.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful place to stay. Wonderfully stylish and comfortable with a host who has a knack of anticipating every need without being intrusive. Beautifully sumptuous breakfast.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This place is unreal - the beauty of it is hard to describe. It is hot outside, not a single cloud in the sky, but Orlanda managed to create an atmosphere where you dont notice any of that - there are numerous secluded spots in the shade, lots of small green oasis nooks all around the property. One could spend an entire day around the pool, it is very peaceful and relaxing. Our room was great, the bed was very comfortable, feels like being in a spa.
Cons: That we had to leave so soon.
7.5 Good
Pros: So many delicious secret spots to relax, read a book, sunbath or take a nap under the trees. Very quiet and peaceful place for the lazy summer days.
Cons: The host, who apparently is also the owner, was not very friendly.

Featured amenities include a business center, a 24-hour front desk, and multilingual staff. Free self parking is available onsite.
5.0 Okay
Pros: This is a superb and grandiose building. Parking outside is easy and free. Good breakfast.
Cons: Our room was 120 yards from the lift, even though there were only 15 rooms on the 2nd floor. The room was dark and gloomy - the only (small) window was over 6 feet above the ground, and the view from it was mostly of castle wall. The bathroom was perfectly clean, but it was the smallest we have ever experienced in any hotel - hardly room to turn round. The bath (shower over it) was so high there was a step to get into it! We complained and were shown another room - just the same. If you go there, refuse the second floor! We had dinner on our first night, but definitely not on our second. A sepulchral dining room, virtually empty, but very slow service for all that. Food was adequate but boring, and the whole experience best forgotten. Try the restaurant 50 yards down the hill towards the town - much more fun, and better food. We are enthusiastic about pousadas, and stayed in three this year en route to our time-share in the Algarve. The other two were excellent. We can't recommend Estremoz however.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: This is the first time we stayed inn old castle. Gives us a great experience together with modern comforts.
Cons: Could have done with better signage from the main road.
6.3 Good
Pros: I liked the hotel/castle itself
Cons: I did not like at book in NOT being told The church & museums would be closed On Monday I did NOT like the fact the waiter on their Restaurant Bought out a bottle of wine when we asked for a glass and we got charged for the bottle even though we only had a glass each. Also he asked if we would like bread, and then popped other small dishes and a bottle of water on our table without asking them we got charged. All up it cost us an extra $40.00 On items we normally would do without. All this happened on my birthday.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Where to start! We had tried to book a castle in Great Britain & Ireland and the prices were 2-3x what we paid here. The breakfast buffet was 2 tables long, the coffee was terrific, the history was wonderful and we went to the restaurant across the courtyard (Acadeia Quinhentista). We like to dine in between the local crowds and had the place to ourselves (which we like, you may not.) I tried the lamb on the server's tip and it was much better than what we had in the Algarve. If you want a once in a lifetime experience, give this castle a try. You can walk into the town Estremoz in 5 minutes. Its wonderful and a little gritty; but you feel immersed in the culture. Definitely not the mega-tour experience, but to our liking. Oh and Queen Isabella's chapel on the castle grounds is awesome. If you want to see this discuss with the front desk as the woman who opens it sometimes doesn't. 10-12 in mornings
Cons: Can't think of much to say here. Reaching for something to put here, the restaurant in the castle is trying to become a gourmet spot and the prices were not what we were willing to pay. It's a beautiful setting though, and it's no more expensive than Lisbon or Sintra for comparable dining.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: History, location, staff, comfort, dining facilities
Cons: A little difficult to locate especially if you have a large car
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location, experience and service - wonderful stop!

Cons: Bed was firm, breakfast was limited after 3 days
7.9 Good
Pros: The building - a former nunnery - is very impressive, with marble staircases, atmospheric cloisters, frescoes on the walls and old furniture and decorative objects everywhere. It was like staying in a museum! The breakfast room is lovely and the selection of food was good, with homemade yoghurt and fresh rolls and pastries. The location, right in the centre of Vila Vicosa and next to the palace, is good for exploring and for local restaurants.
Cons: The staff, while efficient and courteous, were not especially friendly.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The Convento was amazing. The historic convent was better than some of the houses we have paid to visit. We were so glad we went out of our way and stayed there!
Cons: Wifi - we were in one of the outer rooms. It was much better in the main part of the hotel
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The location was great. Great atmosphere, really calm and relaxing place.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Good value for what was offered
Cons: Updating the linen and chairs in the restaurants. Rather old fashion.
6.0 Good
Pros: The double bed should have been at least a queen size bed. It just did not feel confortable enough to be 4 stars.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing place to stay! The location was beautiful and the historical buildings were something special - we wandered throughout and kept finding something new. Nice rooms and the breakfast buffet was great. We had an excellent meal in the onsite restaurant.
Cons: Not a negative as the quiet location is fantastic, but you need a car to get there and there are no other dining options you could walk to or would want to drive to on a winding road at night.

7.1 Good
Pros: Nice location, beautiful vinejard
Cons: Dogs barking at night so not ideal to sleep
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The place is simply beautiful. It is very peaceful, well-kept, and we could visit the winery and farm. The staff are very friendly and will do everything they can for you. If I could improve something, it would be the breakfast, it was a little too basic for the quality of the place itself, but overall, it is excellent. We had a great time and want to go back soon.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic place that exceeded our expectations, from the complimentary wine bottle to the presence of Isabel, the friendliest cat in Portugal. We had one of 3 rooms in the house, sharing a large living space with kitchen, TV and where breakfast is also served. The breakfast itself is not special but the staff is very nice, and not to forget to mention the great quality of wines produced here.
Cons: Even though the place is not hard to find, one has to drive a couple kilometers on unpaved road with little help from navigation systems. Also I found a bit strange the hourly extra charge for checking in after 4PM. Also have to mention that one of the recommended restaurants in Evora (Cafe Alentejo) was a big flop.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Ana was an amazing host. She was very accommodating to our schedule and did a fantastic wine tasting and tour. We had an early departure and she arranged for breakfast to be prepared for us before we left. The guest house, pool and the property are absolutely gorgeous. It is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy Evora.
Cons: We were surprised by the long rough road to the property. Once we did it once it was fine but we are just not used to rural roads.

Pros: The place was nice and was very close to town.
Cons: The shower gell was smelling as if was very old. So it needs to be changed regularly. The coffee was not very nice. Not sure if it was the milk or both. The bed was very noisy.

Pros: Staff (namely D. Rosa) was very friendly and always available to help.
Cons: The path from the gateway to the main house needs more attention and can be prettiest.

Pros: We liked everything, Rosa is a fantastic hostess and the rooms and Swimming Pool are fantastic Estremoz is a very nice town with fantastic restaurants
Cons: Everything was fantastic
9.6 Excellent
Pros: One of the most beautiful homes I´ve been in. Rosa was a lovely host, breakfast was delicious, everything was spotless.
Cons: I came down with gastroenteritis the morning we checked out and was violently ill for two days. It MAY have been because I drank tap water there. If the water is okay to drink, please disregard this comment. I am only making it so that future guests can be warned if the water is, for example, well water that is not potable. There WAS bottled water available, but I tend to shy away from plastic bottles, so drank tap water instead. Probably my mistake, but again, a clear warning would have salvaged my weekend.

Pros: The place is lovely. Very cosy. The owner is really kind and always available to help. The breakfast is AMAZING!!!!never had one like this before not only because of the "food" but mainly because of the hall ambient. I recommend Horta do Laranjal without any doubt .

Pros: The accommodation was very spacious, the breakfast very good as was the host. Real farm atmosphere.
Cons: For cyclists like we were it was a bit far from shops etc
9.2 Excellent
Pros: What a hidden gem this place is. Set amid open countryside and so peaceful, yet 10 mins from Estremoz and Borba. The room we had was lovely, large and comfortable. We had the run of the place so could swim, explore, relax and visit the animals. The owner brought us lemonade and walnuts from his own trees. The only pity was that we were here for only one night. Next visit to Portugal we will plan our stay around this place.
Cons: For some people it may be a bit too off the beaten track - but perfect for us.

Pros: We really enjoyed our stay and the bonus was the amazing evening meal.
7.5 Good
Pros: This is a lovely property in a fantastic location. We had a beautiful bright room. Sadly, there were a number of things wrong during our stay: The telephone in the room didn’t work so we had to go down to reception to report the next ‘events’. The drains in both the sink and bathtub didn’t drain properly. There was no hot water both in the evening and the next morning and the evening receptionist didn’t seem concerned at all. He said the manager would be in around 9:00 in the morning to see what he could do. We are very experienced travellers. In my book, no hot water in a hotel ranks right up there after fire and flooding! I cannot imagine that the manager wouldn’t be informed immediately, call a plumber on emergency service and get this unfortunate situation dealt with immediately. Dinner in the hotel was good; breakfast was very average with cold scrambled eggs. The carpets in the hallways were worn and very dirty. As I said, this could have been a score of 10 - but sadly wasn’t. To their credit, we were not required to pay for our stay. That was both appropriate and kind.
Cons: See above.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Parking was easy in the hotel grounds and the first impressions of the hotel was fabulous. We checked in and were shown to a room in an annex which was lovely - spotlessly clean with a lovely bathroom and a nice comfy bed. The room had a nice patio on which we enjoyed the sunshine. After a great nights sleep the breakfast was fabulous - great selection of cold and also bacon and eggs.
Cons: Nothing

Pros: All in all, an excellent hotel and I can highly recommend it!
Cons: Nothing in particular
8.8 Excellent
Pros: A good hotel, nice room, friendly staff. Comfy bed but... See below
Cons: The bath water was never actually hot, warm but not hot. One other thing : they use a plastic sheet to protect the mattress - understandable, but without an underblanket on top of that before the sheet, it was very sweaty. Or perhaps the sheets were not good enough quality. It made for a sweaty sleep. Shame as the bed was super comfy.

Pros: I really enjoyed the pool area and the elegant breakfast room. There were numerous places to sit outside to enjoy the property.
Cons: The coffee at breakfast buffet was not good. Thankfully, we were able to ask for espressos.
5.0 Okay
Pros: A comfortable hotel with good location for exploring Estremoz and the area. Food in the restaurant was pleasant enough, but see below.
Cons: It was a cold, gloomy and damp day - but that's nothing to do with the hotel. The cold reception from gloomy staff and the cold and gloomy atmosphere in lounge, reception and restaurant are very much something to do with the hotel. Can surely do much better with management interest and intervention.
