9.3 Excellent
Pros: The hotel itself is worth the visit. Stunningly restored to its original glory, with all modern facilities. Surrounded by lush gardens, a real oasis. Immaculately clean. Staff are very pleasant throughout. Good breakfast. And we had an excellent dinner. A place to visit again.
Cons: Our experience was faultless.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: From the moment you drive in, the staff make you feel like you’re the only person in this place. Every detail is attended to, almost as if someone is watching every move you make, so that every experience is memorable. My friend and I were wondering, how can you be this perfect? As soon as your cup is empty it gets refilled, when your plate is ready to be cleared it is done in style and in perfect timing... the staff are truly exceptional and make staying here an unforgettable experience. Apart from that, the location is superb and set in a wonderful pine forest close to the village. The degustation experience from the chef was also outstanding. The beds are world class and sleeping with the windows open and listening to the fountain water at night made it one of the best nights ever. The decor is sumptuous without being over the top. It is truly world class and highly recommended.
Cons: I can’t fault a thing.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing hotel the staff was wonderful
10.0 Excellent
Pros: premisses
Cons: room could be a little bigger
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Highlights: breakfast, beauty of property and park, beautiful decoration, spectacular dining room, spa, gorgeous setting, a very restful space
Cons: Some of the staff were not very friendly and somewhat cold (waiter when we had dinner in dining hall the first night; check-out person at reception. She did not even ask us how our stay went and did not invite us to return; one of the head waitresses in the breakfast area was cold and kept on monitoring how much juice we consumed even though it's an open buffet). Some staff were very friendly and professional: waiter and bartender in bar area inside; person who brought us our car when we left. Overall though, we recall that the staff were friendlier last time we came 6 years ago. The food can definitely be improved especially in the grand dining hall. Expensive for what it was. Scarce portions that were actually not that tasteful. We suggest they change the chef or invite a Michelin Starred chef to create the menu and train the staff. That is what a 5 star hotel should offer: great service and fine cuisine. We were hoping for an upgrade given that it was my husband's 50th birthday but we did not receive it. The first time we came over 6 years ago they gave us a free upgrade but it did not happen this time unfortunately.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: A wonderful hotel where everything was perfect from the moment we arrived to the moment we left. The staff were friendly, courteous and efficient but without being over formal. We had an exceptional meal in the hotel restaurant and an excellent meal in the wine cellar. The breakfast buffet could not have been better. All in all an outstanding experience
Cons: Perfection is not of this world... As a Brit I would have appreciated a kettle with tea and coffee in the room
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The Hotel is fantastic we had a wonderful time; the bed and pillows are the best, the spa is the best, the park is beautiful, the swimming poll and the bar are very nice, the breakfast is very good and so is the restaurant.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The hotel and grounds are gorgeous and we loved the outdoor vitality pool and tented areas.
Cons: I was disappointed that although I mentioned twice (once in writing when booking and once during the check-in) that we were there to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary, not one small gesture was made in recognition of this event. I was not looking for free champagne but it wouldn't have killed them to leave a note, a flower, or some kind of message in our room. I also expect a hotel of this category to cook eggs to order rather than have precooked eggs in a bain marie. The room needs more shelf or drawer space.

Pros: Chorizos, black puddings and ham smoked on the premises, and served in the restaurant. Authentic rural (and delicious) Portuguese cuisine. Village is a remote and a picturesque throwback in time.
Cons: Nothing.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I could not have had a warmer welcome, nor a better place to stay in beautiful northern Portugal. Joaquim and Tina, the owners, greeted me, and I immediately felt at home. The room was comfortable and clean, and the dining facilities are top notch. Joaquim and Tina are attentive and serve up excellent food. Tina made me a wonderful traditional pork and bean stew that was the best meal of my entire trip. Prior to arrival, I had an incident with my rental car that necessitated making several phone calls. My phone did not work, and Joaquim and Tina allowed me to use their phone for an extended time. I cannot thank them enough for their help and for making my stay so memorable overall. My only regret about Casa do Preto is that my stay was too short.

Pros: The owner is attentive and the setting of the place pleasant.
Cons: There was an awful smell of sewage in the bedroom which persisted through the night. The owner must rectify this if he wants happy clients. Breakfast was very poor - better not to offer it.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We loved everything! All of the staff were friendly, caring and professional. The quality of the food at dinner and breakfast was delicious and well-presented in an elegant dining room. The bedroom and modern bathroom were spacious and impeccably clean and the bed was very comfortable. The house is full of history and has been thoughtfully decorated throughout, without losing its rural charm. The swimming pool area is a perfect space for relaxation. Maria, the manager, gave us an informative tour of the Quinta and explained how the wine is made. We were encouraged to walk through the vineyard and see for ourselves and of course, we came away with a bottle or two, which was no hardship for us! We highly recommend you to come and experience all of this for yourself.
Cons: There was nothing that we didn't like. Please note that if you require an evening meal (which I recommend), it is helpful to let them know in advance as it helps with the catering.

9.3 Excellent
Pros: This hotel is very good. We spent five nights here. Quality of food in the restaurant was excellent and staff were very helpful. Breakfast was very good with plenty of choices. Rooms are nice and it is not a noisy hotel. Outdoor and indoor swimming pools excellent and sauna, steam room etc very good. Right next to the Pena adventure park which is good for activities for a day or two but park is pricey enough. You could easily spend a couple of hundred Euros (we were a family of 4).

We came to this place by chance and although we had to book very spontaneously everything went very well. The Hosts are extremely friendly and really... this place is so beautiful, peaceful and relaxing. I can only recommend it!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Exceptional - was so surprised to find such a charming, quiet, beautiful property in such a glorious location. The attention to detail is superb and the family-run service was a real treat. I visited for work so only wish I had more time to spend in the hotel, but the comprehensive freshly prepared breakfast was the perfect start to the day and the comfy, stately rooms were very welcome to retire too in the evening
Cons: A bit secluded... but that is also a reason to like it too!

Quinta da Mata - Chaves - Building
11
9.1 Excellent (361 reviews)
Overview Reviews
Located in Chaves, Quinta da Mata is in a rural location, within a 10-minute drive of Ponte Romana de Trajano and Chaves Castle. Free self parking is available onsite.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The entire hotel , the views, ambience ,friendly staff
Cons: Everything was lovely so no negative things
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This one I want to write about! The location is magnificent - halfway up the mountain behind the spa town of Chaves - so you have a stunning view from the patio and the pool deck. I can't emphasize how lovely and historic the estate feels - quiet, welcoming, like slowing down time. Fortunately it's not the creaky kind of historic... The building (seventeenth century??) is all stone and tile, so it's solid and cool-- a respite from the hot Portuguese sun. Also, worth saying that yes, it's an active farm, but there weren't roosters waking us up, or pervasive farm smells. It was just the right amount of landscape: down the hill from the inn, you'd spot little lambs following their mama, or you could walk over to see the chickens (and enjoy the fresh eggs... one morning my daughter was invited to go fetch an egg, but the hen hadn't provided). The place is family-run, with extra staff for meals, so the attention felt kind but not overbearing. The owner took pride in suggesting wines, bringing over little tastings (which makes a natural segue to begin talking with other guests -- we met travelers from Germany, Brazil, Spain). The food is delicious: breakfast was a buffet of yoghurts, fruit, meats, cheeses, grainy breads w homemade preserves, and then the kitchen would send out small terrines of hot eggs and sausage - and for the kids, the famous egg custard tarts!) Dinner was 25/pp euro fixe, which included wine, huge salads, and amazing grilled proteins: veal one night; fish the next; even a grilled goat that my husband couldn't get enough of. In another country we would have paid twice (thrice?) for the value of what we received at Quinta da Mata. (Incidentally, my teens were thrilled with the good Wifi...so if you don't want to entirely unplug, that's possible too...)
Cons: Hardly anything to speak of -- It's a historic property, so we didn't expect giant TVs or a minibar. In the early evening, when fellow guests were dressing for dinner, the hot water was less hot, so we just timed our bathing for later or earlier. Also, our nice heavy bath had a hand-held shower but no hook to hang it by, which made for a somewhat gymnastic experience--but then our daughter's room did have a typical hook, so that might just be a small quirk of ours.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Wonderful unique place ! Beautiful views, calm and peaceful and very very warm and accommodating owner and staff !
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful location and great service.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Out of town, but that is what we wanted. We loved our stay here, great wine, good food and great hospitality. Loved it.
Cons: There was no hook on the wall for the shower head to hang. Such a simple thing, but would have made it a perfect stay.
3.3 Mediocre
Pros: Only the views. The hotel was very old Portuguese, very dark inside and not homely or comfortable. NO SEATING in our room only stiff wooden chairs. BED TOO SMALL. ROOM VERY DARK. SMELLED VERY VERY BAD. SHOWER AWFULLY SMELL AND WE DID NOT SHOWER BECAUSE OF THAT. WATER WAS TEPID. AWFUL TWO NIGHTS. NEVER NEVER AGAIN. FOOD TERRIBLE BREAKFAST. WE ATE OUT IN THE DAY TO MAKE UP FOR THAT. IT JUST LOOKS GOOD BUT IN REALITY IS AWFUL TO LIVE IN.
Cons: ABOVE SAYS IT ALL
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Nice secluded but yet close to Chaves. Had a meal and it was stupendously good, could not have asked for better hospitality
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Luis was a great host and place was in a lovely location on their own estate/farm. We upgraded our room for an extra 10€ and had a massive suite overlooking the farm. Lots of lounge areas and also their own chapel with an interesting history. They catered for us beautifully esp being vegetarian with wines to match and it was all delicious and we probably ate far too much! Enjoyed strolling around the farm and saw a new born lamb, plus horses and sheep and lots of poultry, plus massive veggie garden. Thoroughly recommend it. Wish it had been warmer to take advantage of the lovely pool.
Cons: Nada
9.3 Excellent
Pros: This is so much more than a B & B - it is an experience. We arrived early evening and were greeted by Luis' father who after showing us to our room conducted a short tour of the property which appears to be a natural/organic/bio working farm as well. The inside is a myriad of rooms with wonderful furnishings that are in keeping with the age of the property. We were the only guests that evening so he pointed us in the direction of a local restaurant about 3km away. The next morning after a very hearty breakfast we eventually caught up with Luis and chatted away quite happily for over an hour. He was a delightful and very informed host. If you want somewhere to stay with all mod cons then this is NOT the place for you. However if you want somewhere with terrific character, then I whole-heartedly recommend Quinta da Mata.

Pros: Location of the hotel. very peaceful and nice view over the city of Chaves. the room is spacious and very tidy. easy access from and to the motorway and plenty of parking space available.
Cons: the check-in moment very «cold» perhaps due the «late arrival». although we had paid for breakfast, the service wasn't available before 7.am and the front desk staff didn't bother to offer a food pack instead! for sure this is an area that can be improved.

9.3 Excellent
Pros: This is a centrally based hotel inside the grounds of an historic building. Even though it is central, it is also very peaceful. It has a lovely poo land pool area with a handy snack bar. The breakfasts were really nice. Good variety and quality - fresh fruit already prepared, help yourself preserves, good quality bread. The staff were very nice, in particular, Luis, at the pool area who "rescued" me when it started to rain. He helped me pack my stuff up and held a pool umbrella over us on our way back - I felt like the Queen of Sheba. What a gentleman.
Cons: Can't think of anything.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: We had an issue with some bar meals we ordered, the complaint was dealt with in a very professional way and everyone was happy with the outcome. The hotel was beautiful and the surrounding area stunning.
Cons: The junior staff are inexperienced to be in charge of bar and bar meals, but the senior staff are a bit thin on the ground for such a luxurious hotel .I would say the hotel management need to spend time and money on getting the staffing levels balanced correctly and it would be one of best.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast very good. Location fine. It´s an old fort and there are many "empty" spaces, they don´t really take advantage of the beautiful building.
Cons: The building is amazing, but not very well used.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It was delightful, in an excellent location for strolling about, lovely pool for hot afternoons. All was clean, huge plentiful towels, super room with window opening onto courtyard. Most amazing buffet breakfast. And you could ask for eggs the way you like them, and coffee espresso if you wished. Very quiet for sleeping.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Hotel and location
Cons: Have stayed here many times and has been excellent in all respects, but unfortunately they have closed the main restaurant. Only a small restaurant with very limited space and menu remains. Sad but will not be returning here again unless they reopen the main restaurant.
7.0 Good
Pros: Well decorated, nice hotel
Cons: Breakfast is not good at all. Coffee is very bad (machine of course) and the eggs are - in one word - disgusting.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful hotel with lots of history and character. It had every facility you could think of.
Cons: There seem to be a shortage of staff, and there was no restaurant
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Location, nice pool very good taverna
Cons: Should refurbish

Pros: The hotel was family-run with its own restaurant. The staff were extremely pleasant and efficient. The room and en-suite bathroom were tastefully furnished and well-appointed. The breakfast was not only delicious but also enormous. I have already highly recommended the hotel to several others and I myself definitely intend to stay there again when I am next passing through. I live in Scotland and Portugal and so this lovely hotel is a very convenient stopping-place for me.
Cons: As you can see from my glowing review above, there was nothing at all that I did not like.

Pros: The location - right in the middle of a typical Portuguese village. The staff - Joana was very welcoming and efficient. The house - great job in keeping the original features of the houses while giving them a touch of modern comfort. Breakfast - fresh, tasty, delicious.
Cons: The signs/ directions to the property could be better but there's always someone to help.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was fantastic. The staff was friendly and the building itself was nice. It was like being in a museum. We were the only guests on that day but we didn't feel abandoned.
Cons: The room was cold and the heating wasn't very strong. The TV in our room only had the basic channels
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The property was great, the staff was excellent (Fani was super warm and friendly). We will definitely return if within the area. We also thought it could be a great place for special occasions with friends or family as it is quite secure, reserved and well taken care of.
Cons: Parking could be better but it is the trade off for this type of tourism. A minor point would say.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is a seriously good hotel. Amazing decor, rooms and setting and incredible value prices.
Cons: No faults at all
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is beautiful, a gem and the staff were very friendly and accommodating
5.8 Okay
Pros: Nice localization between Vidago and Pedras Salgadas.
Cons: Its hard to park at the property. There is not really parking place. The pool was actually public swimming pool. We stayed in the room 8. The room was completelly different from the pictures of the booked room through Booking. There was no wifi at all. Probably due to location of the room. Also almost non of the listed facilities on Booking was available in the room. Not even a hair dryer. The room had entrance to the garden but no key to open it. Moreover, the door was from 3/4 made from glass so everyone from the garden could see inside the room, whis was very uncomfortable. The garden look very nice from long distance but from closer look, the chairs were covered with birds excrements. Don´t know if we were only unlucky with the room, but it influenced the impression from the entire property.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A little gem of a find! A very last minute booking and we confused everything by getting our times mixed up and turning up way to earlier but the staff could not have been more friendly and welcoming. We couldn’t believe our luck when we saw the stunning setting. A beautiful old family home that has been brought up to date to provide the most idyllic of accommodation. One of those places you always hope for on your travels but so rarely actually find. Can’t recommend them enough!!!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The quiet location. Very confortable place. 5 stars bedroom. All very clean.
