Excellent food! The whole, very short stay. was excellemt value.
The special rate if a child is occupying a room on their own - half the normal rate, so our 14 year old son had independence at a reduced cost !! We've never found a hotel which does this before, so well done to Paten Hotels. The bar service was good value for money, and an excellent choice of food. Considering the room rates, the accommodation was very plush, and a really enjoyable experience.
Rooms good quality Quality of hot breakfast poor TV reception
Such great value for money! Really nice and comfortable hotel with a lovely pool area. The village of Marks Tey is kind of in the middle of nowhere, but I suppose that adds to the charm.
Rooms were classically designed, very comfortable Had to keep windows closed due to traffic noise
We have 3 kids and the staff made sure we had interconnecting rooms, many thanks to them. The hotel needs an overhaul, it is very ugly from the outside and the furniture and fittings are getting quite tired now. Also noise from the nearby road is quite loud.
the experience the tv did not work and a request to have it looked at was to no avail
Excellent bar food and buffet breakfast. Slightly noisy being situated right by A12, but double glazing does cut out most of the traffic noise
the helpfulness of the staff n/a
I enjoyed my stay because the rooms were clean, comfortable and sufficient for our overnight stay. I was asked to if I wanted to order a newspaper for Sunday morning and it never arrived. No apology from staff and no reason for it not appearing. We were being picked up at 12 so decided after checkout to have a coffee in the lounge. Found staff member very flippant and unhelpful. No change available in the till.
Conveniently located with respect to Essex University bath shower facilities just adequate; all charm destroyed; electric fireplace etc.; private anniversary celebrations left hardly any parking place and the parking is big....
Other than B&B, I did not use any facility. But good secure parking facility adjacent to the hotel was welcome.
Clean and well presented, no excessive fuss but just good value Nothing
The staff is very helpful the rooms are very dated and beds very small and not comfortable
Very helpfull staff, the room was a standard size and good for the rate and the meals were very good. the general decor of the hotel appeared well maintained and clean The TV was a bit small to watch comfortably room the bed
The country house location. N/A
Beautiful surroundings. Peaceful. Tv could be labelled to say 'master switch by bed'. Was not obvious to start with. Final details of how to arrive (from London)by car could be improved and Borough Road is also 'Entrance to UoEssex.
Location The barking dog in the room next door, if I had stayed more than one night this would have been a problem. The lady in the next room with the pooch was somewhat selfish. Perhaps the hotel could have advised of the local dog fanciers convention (true not sarcasm) before putting us in the room they did...
Quiet and comfortable. No hassle. Excellent position for visit to University, Colchester and Wivenhoe.
Staff were polite and friendly. Paint flaking off the walls in the dining room. Bathroom badly needs work ---- rust behind taps. The bed was only 4ft 6ins wide and my wife and I are used to a larger size. When one is paying £90 per night you would expect to be nearly as comfortable as you are at home with at least a 5ft bed. Also there was only one armchair ?
Staff very helpful. Room was very clean and good value for price paid Outside area could have been cleaned and more could be done with the bar and outside areas to compete with the Crown accross the road !!!
Excellent welcome by all. Food, room and atmosphere very friendly and relaxing. We knew the area but would not eat anywhere else after first night in the restraurant. Had to wait for the Toad in the Hole, but well worth the wait. Should be a 5 Star rated country hotel. Used to be in the tourist business in Devon. Excellent standards. Only one comment. The water pressure in the shower. Experienced this in my own holiday park in Devon. Need to have a water pump installed to equal out the pressure.
All staff and food where very good and very friendly we had a very nice stay
Excellent hotel in fine location very enjoyable weekend. At good value.
Comfortable room, spotlessly clean. Nice bar/restaurant room. Stair carpet was filthy - and seems to have been like that for a while. Breakfast was disappointing, in particular the attitude of the lady cooking / serving. We felt we were intruding on her day.
Lovely hotel in nice location, staff were very helpful at all times, food good We were in a lovely room but there was a constant humming noise coming from behind the wall next to the bathroom (sounded like a pump of some sort!)This went on through the night which was very annoying. Also on last morning my pot of butter actually smelled of garlic! Obviously it had garlic in the night before but thought they should have checked this as it totally put me off my toast!
Very friendly staff, good food, excellent value for money
Atmosphere created by a 15th/16th Century inn - not too sophisticated, but comfortable. Menu was limited oin second night by "off" dishes.
we were made very welcome right from start..all the staff were very friendly, and happy.they gave us info on places to go nearby.. nothing that we did not like..
The hotel is very nice, and also Jackie and her sister let you fill immediately like at home. This is the right place were stay after a long day of work...
Value for money accommodation Food - roomservice meal was expensive and not the highest quality
Clean, friendly staff, good food and enjoyed the pool!!! Nothing. Shame about the weather but no one can do nothing about that !
the staff were very helpful the room was very clean and tidy comfortable a very worthwhile stay for the price I thought the room would include breakfast as this is a must as a feature in the current climate and for he price...on the basis of this we decided to eat away from the hotel for meals as this offered the best value for money
It had a nice bathroom Very basic room the travel inn offers more comfort for less money
Excellent location 10 mins off the a12 in pleasant rural location. Good facilities, good sized well equipped rooms, friendly staff Restaurant a bit pricy but lounge bar meals reasonably priced and good quality.
Chef took the time to discuss my dietry needs&supplied me a lovely me. Dining rooms was good.Hotel was very busy but we were not disturbed by noise. Room outlook was over car park, not so good. Ordered papers but werre not told we had to collect from reception. Spa had products on show however when I wanted to purchase something I was told that as yet they did not have any to sell. For me mattress was a bit 'tired' fortunately had taken a travel memory foam mattress. Would recomend both the hotel and your services and hope to arrange astay via yourselves next year
Location and hotel facilities (spa) Restaurant closed earlier than we'd have liked (9pm), but room service was excellent and the food was very good.
Roomy, clean, small details (quality of beds sheets etc) but above all, the marvellous staff team. Made my long business stay a real pleasure. Food good in restaurant too. Very slow room heaters, if you forget to inform the staff and get your room 'pre warmed' you may have to sit in your overcoat for 10-15 minutes until it gets going, but hey, maybe it's an environmental thing! Breakfast bit uninventive, same every day.
Made to feel very welcome and comfortable. Wonderful setting. Just lack of toiletaries in bathroom but I did have an economy room. And would have been nice to have rack of toast brought from the kitchen at breakfast instead of having to queue for the single slow toaster (with army of hungary golfers in front of me!)
A fine hotel in stunning surrounings with 2 golf courses attached. All the staff were very friendly and made you feel at home immediately. No complaints
The lovely breakfasts Nothing
Facilities and cleanliness of hotel. Ability to hear Essex girl antics in adjoining room
After a long journey in the fog, it was lovely to have room service meal (from a well-mannered and lively steward), rest, relax and watch the rugby on tv! N/A
Helpfull staff Bathroom not really clean , specifically the bathroom floor was dirty on arrival
Very pleasant stay albeit for one night only. Quiet location which was impressive.
Very nice breakfast. Charges for internet, it should be wireless and provided for free.
The staff were really frendly. The breakfast had a nice variety and tasted very good N/A
The gentleman was very helpful at reception-went out of his way to assist me.
room size and ease of access to colchester utd football ground(taxi £10) breakfast is a set price £13.95 alittle bit out of most peoples range
The welcome of the staff I was made to feel welcome in all areas, and you felt the staff enjoyed their role rather than just being at work.
Being in the centre of town and comfortable Yes, we did not get given a parking token for the hotel car park and as a result we got a parking ticket
I have stayed at the George many times but because of the lack of a lift I shall be unable to do so in the future. They kindly gave me an upgrade to a suite on the 3 floor which was in accessible for me because of the steep stairs. Luckily I was able to exchange rooms with the friend who was with me, The receptionist explained (in a very friendly way) that because the building was listed they could not make too many alterations Room 205 was at the back of the Hotel overlooking the service quarters and deliveries made early in the morning proved a nuisance but once again the cost of fitting double glazing in the correct listed building style was prohibitve for the Swallow chain of Hotels - the George apologised
very old world hotel in the center of the town with good parking not obvious how to get to car park
the breakfast was well cooked and plentyful room was cold not enough bedding
Location is excellent in Colchester Cold room, bedspread with holes in it and a sheet as bedding - no duvet in sight! So a bad night's sleep
The setting of a really historic building in the centre of a historic town the TV didn't offer all the channels advertised; the room could have been cleaner & general decor of the hotel
Staff were polite and the hotel was clean and well looked after Parking was problematic
Close to Town Centre Barman, refused to serve us drinks it was 11pm admittedly but we had just arrived. He then got told he had to serve residents and he huffed puffed and cursed. He also told us the Hotel did not sell cigarette's . Which they did!!! Cigarette machine near the ground floor toilets.
loud music during the weekends out of pubs and club
The position is very good actually. The room was quite big and with few good services. No welcome at the hotel. No Good Morning/Afternoon, Welcome, How are you...Very bad impression about people working there. No farewell/Thank you/Bye Bye...Nothing at all. The reception staff was very bad looking, dirty and unfriendly. No knowledge about the town and the attractions around (they are not too many so we expected much more help from the reception/concierge). .....Security in the night was really poor. the night concierge opened the door to us without asking nothing about our identity when we asked the room key...we could get any room key easily....Quite scaring!!!
convenience room cleanliness, small shallow bath, tired decor
Excellent value for money. Bed very comfortable, room clean and quiet. Staff friendly and helpful, especially bar and restaurant staff. Had a two meals for £9.95 deal which was excellent. Would recommend the hotel and will definitely use again.
All the staff were extremely polite. The staff in the dining room need more training. They were very polite but forgot to serve our wine and no water was offered.
Style of and decor of hotel
Location Lack of cleanliness and poor quality of furnishings and fittings in each of the three rooms (including a suite) that we were allocated after various changes.
Very friendly and helpful staff. The room was comfortable and clean. The full english breakfast was exceptionally good ( the eggs were even cooked in froint of us to our taste). A really good selection of freshly prepaired food! The hotel was difficult to find
staff very friendly and helpful, room well appointed and clean and niceto see bath mats, shower gel, tea tray etc, not like travelodge where we stayed recently and all these things were absent. Price of breakfast very steep, can get a decent steak in a restaurant for that!
Everything was just right. Thanks to bookings.com I managed to get a suite for the price of a double. Having been once I am sure I wouldnt have the problem again but I did find it ratehr awkward to find and probably spent 20mins driving around in circles despite sat nav.
Clean, good size room, nice surroundings, decent restaurant WiFi connection kept dropping or was very slow and unreliable in room. Bed too soft for my liking.
A comfortable stay My wife could smell smoke via the air con
Staff are excellent. Oldest hotel in England. Quaint. Excellent Restaurant. Excellent Bathroom and lots hot water. No smoking rooms were all in modern extension not the historic building and the bedroom decor was tired. TV did not work properly.
the old atmosphere
location good, well preserved old building
Almost nothing The staff, the noise in the room
Staff were very friendly and helpful
The total service was excellent.
was there one night only , room was warm which was good. breakfast was too expensive.
The general old world appearance and decor none
Only one-night stay - as we had wedding to go to nearby on the Saturday evening - but found it to be a pleasant, friendly hotel to stay in. No
OK facilities. Smell in bathroom (room 218); location and traffic noise not wonderful.
