central position bed too small for 2 people
it was handy for the shops and the night life would deffinatly stay there again
The welcome, the pool and breakfast
The log fire in the foyer as it was freezing weather at the time. A warmer more welcoming sitting area in the bar is necessary.
friendly staff, good central position The executive room was very small though well equipped.
The ocation was good but hard to find The staff were not very friendly and when we arrived we had to get housekeeping up to clean the toilet, there was crusted grim under the rim, hey did fix as soon as we asked but it was obvious that it had been there for some time. On his I would not recommend
friendly, helpful staff. Good food Hard bed
Wasn't to pleased with room it said deluxe, wasn't very deluxe to me. Breakfast was awful think it was cooked in deep fat drier.won't be staying again. Breakfast and room
the location fo the hotel was fantastic
I liked the internal archtecture of the hotel.which was classic and tasteful. The sash windows rattle during the windy nights.
Friendly staff A rubber mat for the bath to make it non slip.
The bathroom floor could have been cleaned better
No worries about time of arrival - open late. Free cash machine available. Clean, quite roomy. Too hot, and a certain amount of noise late into the night from adjacent petrol station. Also v. noisy plumbing!
clean, comfortable and somewhere to relax before retiring
Staff.Overall very good stay. Thanks bathroom floor a tad grubby
The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The room was very comfortable and the en-suite was immaculate. We dined in the Almonds restaurant and chose the set menu at £20.95 per person. The food was delicious and represented good value. The cooked breakfast was very plentiful and tasty. Although there is no parking on site the nearby car park is less than a minute's walk away and free. Can't think of anything I didn't like.
shower room food staff cleanliness welcome and relaxing atmosphere too short a stay but had to get home for work
Professional and efficient staff
Excellent service - informative and friendly. Excellent food in the restaurant with lovely ambiance. Can't fault anything Nothing
For our visit the location was very good. The staff were very helpful and the room was very comfortable.
Warmly welcomed and staff went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. Roms are comfortable and clean. On site parking could have been a problem, but the Hotel were able to provide us with a permit to park in a nearby public parking area.
Friendly staff Lots of small flights of stairs but in an old building that is unavoidable
friendly and accommodating staff The bathroom was very small, hardly enough room to squeeze into the toilet. I asked for veggie breakfast and got a veggie sausage and er bacon! Not a luxury hotel by any standards but OK for what we wanted.
warm welcome at reception Restaurant was temporarely closed due to refurbishing.
It is a very confortable hotel and the food is very good. It is also dog friendly which is a big plus.
The upgrade to room 114 The room allocated to us 129 was at the back of the hotel and the heating was v/poor as the radiator did not radiate properly - we woke up in the morning bitterly cold and to complel matters there was no hot water and we had to boil the kettle to wash - we explained this at reception and were moved to room 114 - which was perfect
Location - convenient for railway station and city centre The heating could have been better for mid-November
The location was excellent for the purpose of my visit. However the hotel lacked atmosphere, breakfast very basic. The room was expensive for the size of it, very small, and cramped. However the bathrom was as big as the bedroom
A bit run down. Needs tidying.
good location, near to the train station and not too far from the centre of the city.reception was pleasant and helpfull.
The filthy bathroom floor and the lack of hot water
The service at reception was good. Felt very welcome and comfortable this is a difficult choice - Low energy bulbs are environmently friendly and cost effective and I advocate their use but it makes the room dark - it was difficult to work and read. internet access for business customers would be helpful
Night Porter was there as I arrived very late and was very helpful with advice on the area
We enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, the helpful staff, the hotel's location, our room was extremely comfortable and the food was lovely. N/A
Handy for the station as was due to travel early following morning by train on a business trip though weather in end prevented this
Great location, central to night-life. Understand that if you book here it can be noisy. Unless you are too drunk to notice !
Centrally located, helpful staff Near to night clubs, first room very noisy, asked to move and 2nd night was fine.
Its location in the centre of town, its value for money price, the reasonable check in and out times and its simple but comfortable and well equipped rooms.
Good central location and suprisingly queit considering we were in the main "Clubbing" street Pillows a bit thin and no spares in the room
Central location! Right in the middle of all pubs and restaurants. Spacious room Shower was interesting, though flooding bathroom was easy to do. Breakfast not included and £7 for continental so didnt bother
Good location Poor shower always runs cold and hot
It was close to the station and had 24 hour service. The room was cold and a bit basic
Courtesy and friendliness of staff was very good
An Ibis is an Ibis. Cheap internet/tv/movie package. Police presence in reception for most of the evening provided extra security! An unfortunate incident in the bar led to the bar being closed early and the opportunity to spend some time with half the Cumbrian Police force discussing the merits of policing such an area whilst their colleagues dealt with the incident.
The breakfast was good. We had a problem and the staff were good about fixing it an letting us know how things were progressing. The staff in the restaurant forgot us without apology, and stood near us looking at their watches during breakfast. The beds and pillows were hard, and the room was rather hot with no air conditioning. There is no lift, and the stairs are steep, long, and narrow.
Hotel staff were friendly friendly. Rooms were clean and spacious. Food was very tasty and drink prices reasonable. Good secure parking. Hotel could do with a refurb as it was very chintzy. Matresses were a bit too soft for our liking.
No complaints. Excellent value for money, good location.
the service we received was very good ,,our room was very clean and tidy ,as was the bathroom, Breakfast was of a high standard. and we enjoyed our stay at that hotel .. no compaints
Everything, staff, atmosphere, food, restaurant, close to city centre and parks, was quiet , clean, enjoied the decorations of the hotel, that added personality.
The staff were very pleasant and the service was good. The food in the restaurant and breakfast was good. The room was not very big and the finishing to some of the decor was poor ie ripped wallpaper, wonky headboard, unfinished grouting in the on suite, double wardrobe with only one door in use and back panel falling off.
Very clean, staff were very helpful. Good breakfast. Cost for one night stay for a double room quite expensive
Very friendly atmosphere, good choice of food on menu and staff very helpfull. The only thing that wasnt 100% to our liking was the bed was a little on the hard side. We also heard a few other guests comment on this at breakfast. It didnt ruin our stay but if the bed had been a little softer the stay would have been perfect.
the freindly serves of the staff
Location was very convenient. Food good. En- suite was excellent with a good shower. Friendly and efficient staff. Off road parking. Bedroom slightly 'musty' smell, and seemed as if it had been 'sprayed' to mask the ambience. Bed itself was too firm for our comfort.
attention to detail in the room
Comfortable and quiet. Bar facilities OK. Breakfast excellent Expected more for price. Evening meal barely adequate very old fashioned. Could not get a member of staff to leave key with when checking out
Room was agood size and very clean Wife turned up for breakfast at 09.05 and was told it was finished at 09.00. She was not offered anything not even coffee
A very run down hotel in need of a major overhaul. rather a soul less place.
A good location for business and wife to go to Gateway Shopping
the area our two rooms were far apart
The informal meals available in the bar area was perfect. The only negative was the room was a little bit small.
You need to go thru the bar to go to your room - this needs to be changed, was also dissapointed with the food
We stayed gretna Hall for my sisters wedding which was taking place in another hotel. i found the staff very friendly and helpful as we booked another room at short notice and the gentleman on reception facilitated us by putting my daughter in a room opposite ours.
the rooms were excellent, nice decor. the public areas were a little drab and needed refurbishment. Old carpets etc.
Location was the main reason for selecting the hotel. Reception staff were helpful and friendly. The menu seemed well priced. Hotel met with my requirements
relaxed comfortable atmosphere
friendly staff, great breakfast, lovely location, beautiful grounds love little pond and summerhouse live band played till1215 we would have liked prior notice so that we could have had a quieter location,we had our 18month gandson with us and we were very tired after attending a family christening at nearby Smiths
The food was very good and very reasonably priced. The bed which I occupied was narrow and uncomfortable. I know I could have called someone about it but didn't want to cause a kerfuffle late at night. Would come back again and check all that earlier in the day. Thanks
Location to train station, great for late arrivals. I also arranged for a hire car to be left in the hotel carpark.
Friendly staff, good food
Very convenient to station. A great traditional hotel. Recommended. Superb breakfast! No biscuits in rooms!
value for money. Restaurant food - excellent. Express my congratulations to the chef.
Convenient to City centre, Hotel lobby and reception very impressive, room was comfortable. Outside our room on arrival there was a tray with food on it and it was still there when we returned later in the evening, the window sash was black with mildew and did'nt look like it had been cleaned in months.
Comfortable beds, lots of hot water, friendly staff
The hotel was well looked after in every detail and the staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast service was a little disappointing as we had to request everything individually from additional butter, orange juice and milk. The cooked breakfast could not be faulted but the buffet table for fruit, cereal and yogurt was very poorly presented.
Everything was clean and everyone was very nice. Could have done without the wedding 'music' on the Friday night and the room was slightly warm
Staff were nice and pleasant Cleanliness of the room. Pink feather and crumbs in the bed (which were not ours!!). Dust around skirting board and mold on the shower head!!! Noise from outside air conditioning unit which carried on all night and disturbed sleep!! Have advised the hotel of these problems.
Excellent service from the hotel staff when checking in and in the restaurant. The quality of the food was very good and was good value for money. Our room overlloked an alley where bins were stored and these were moved noisily at about 5:00 am disturbing our sleep. As can be expected in a central town location, there was also noise from late night revellers outside the hotel!
The location to Carlisle was very convenient as we were en route to Scotland. Closeness to a railway station means we may visit again and travel on public transport. Setting and food great.
It was great as a halfway stop for us, i also found the hotel very relaxing but family oriented at the same time. We will be back :) We had Breakfast delivered to room and there was no where to put tray apart from bed which is not ideal when you have children and wasn't to impressed with breakfast!
Staff were friendly and willing to listen No
nice well planned room. good reception and dining room staff. good pool and health centre. had to step out in rain to reach main part of hotel from room.
We were given a cottage room. Outstanding
Everything would have been good except there was a wedding on and the noise kept us awake till gone midnight. Our room was directly over the reception and it would have been better if we were elsewhere in the hotel.
very pleasant staff, clean rooms, lovely village/country location steam room was out of order, only 5 choices of main course in the restaurant at night time.
The quality of the food and wine in the bar area was of a lower standard than we expected
location of the hotel and the general feeling of the hotel made it an enjoyable stay.
Staff ensured there was a good atmosphere throuout. Leasure facilities were better maintained than a lot of the larger more expensive chain hotels we have stayed at. Even the downside of a wedding reception was well managed as we were given a room as far away from the event as possible.
the bed was very comfortable, breakfast was good, and the one member of staff we saw was very friendly. the room we got was very shabby, was nothing like the photo Isaw advertised on your site, we had a good view of the kitchen fan from our window, nothing else,so we got the smell and the noise and the whole room shook every two minutes until the kitchen closed. The room also did not have a shower which in this day and age I find difficult to understand, never stayed anywhere in the world without one.dissapointing!!
It was very quiet and peaceful at night. The room was large with plenty of space to keep our clothes. Towels were changed daily and the hotel was spotlessly clean.
The location was ideal, right on the front. The staff were very helpful and courteous. The hotel could not have been any cleaner. We were made very welcome including our 3 dogs. Great value for money.
the room was comfy and clean and the food was nice and well served especially breakfast
Bar was closed to residents at 11 30pm
I had a single room for 1 night and although the room was a little tired it was acceptable considering the low price.
Very good breakfast
Value for money - friendly staff, restaurant and bar a big plus Room could do with updating, was abit scruffy decor wise - room had an extremely small shower/toilet and no bath.
Its location which is close to the centre of Carlisle, Hadrians Wall and the Scottish Borders Some of the bedroom furniture was a bit tired
Food was very good comment made to us about another guest
Hotel is well serviced and cleanly No internet access (even, if free wifi is advertised for); room was very, very tiny; renovation works were going on in our corridor; the hotel is located just next to a fairly busy road, all windows face this road; breakfast is only available until 9 am; check out is rather early as well; bathroom was sorta o.k. but old.
Both the friendliness and efficiency of the staff and the food were great. They did as much as possible to make our stay enjoyable. I was a little concerned over fire precautions. We were at the end of a corridor with no alternative means of escape in the event of fire.
Genuine welcome and friendly staff together with some good food. Nohting was was too much trouble
only stayed the one night but room was clean and confortable. Staff friendly.
The staff were helpful and friendly It was not very clean, especially the bathroom, the bed was very uncomfortable with a plastic mattress cover and we could hear every word the next room said as well as them using and flushing the toilet!
very friendy and helpful staff,so relaxing
Good clean Hotel. Noise of other rooms & running water
Nice clean quite spacious room, friendly staff and our food was lovely Not really able to control the temperature of room. The restaurant was not in use due to wedding reception, and ate in the bar instead which was fine but we were not offered the restaurant al a carte menu like other guests were.
How organised the hotel was and the friendlyness of the entire team there. Any way they could help you they would nothing was a problem. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will recommend to other people. The only fault was that the breakfast was slow in coming other than that nothing at all.
It was easy to find. Plenty of parking space. The staff were very helpfull. The bedroom and bathroom were clean. Good breakfast. Check out at 10am was a bit of a rush
Friendly atmosphere The number of fire-doors that you had to go through to get to our room
Room was lovely, no
Easy to reach from main trunk road (M74/M6). Room was clean tidy and very comfortable. Staff were first class from start to finnish. Food was fabulous. Look forward to staying again soon. Price to was brill for food and accomodation.
Convenient overnight stop off, very friendly owners, lovely place, would like to go back
It was night stay before a business visit to nearby town. It was a very comfort time staying in the hotel.
The overall cleanliness of the Guesthouse and the food...well, it was one of the best meals I have ever had. The freindly staff made our stay extra relaxing and the local knowledge and advise given made our walking the area great. 10 out of 10 to Jack and Margaret...we will return to them in the future.
We stayed here as a base for our wedding in Gretna Green and everybody was so friendly and couldnt do enough to make us feel welcome and comfortable. Fantastic location to get away from it all. Meals were great too.
Friendly atmosphere, very good accommodation, good service and food. Large indoor swimming pool. Rural setting.
the service was fantastic and the evening meal was fantastic. a great allround stay
This b & b was just great! The room was super! It had an upstairs sitting area as well with tv, couch, chairs, dining area and kitchen. The owners were super friendly and helpful and the morning breakfast was sensational! There were no directions on the print-out on how to reach this place. We had to get directions from the local police. We mentioned this to the owner and he will, no doubt, correct this.
Beautiful, upgraded to a cottage on arrival, food was delicious, and the staff extremely helpful. There is nothing that we didn't like. the whole stay was excellent value for money and the whole atmosphere was wonderful.
Jack and the others succeed in making their guests feel at home. Our visit to Bessiestown felt like meeting old friends - though we had never been there before. The atmosphere is so friendly and relaxed. In fact out visit to Bassiestown left nothing to be desired. For Dutch visitors: zeer zeker een aanrader!
We were made to feel very welcome and at home. The food was lovely, the location peaceful and beautiful, and the atmosphere was relaxing. Our room was fresh, clean and very comfortable. All in all, it was a great place to stay!
Top quality from a small establishment. All the things you would expect in a 5* hotel We could not fault the service , the food and room We would recommend our friends to stay here and if we are in that area we will stay again
have a great time eating, chatting to owners and generally chilling out no nothing
An amazing place to stay - a truly relaxing experience. Lovely people in a lovely place. Beautiful room and large airy bathroom. Food to die for and a breakfast to keep you going all day. Definitely a place to go again.
The food, the rooms and the hotel was excellent. Nothing we enjoyed everything.
Excellent rooms The evening meal was a little over-cooked.
Location, people, facilities and all the options
we stayed in the willow room and it was beautiful, couldnt fault anything there was plenty of towels, the bed was comfortable didnt want to get up. The breakfast was great and plentiful. Everyone was so friendly and helpful really couldnt fault anything.
This is an excellent up-market B&B, with those few extra creature comforts in a modern elegant building, set in quiet beautiful grounds. A very good breakfast, very welcoming, we would recommend it highly. We only chose this B&B as they advertised special evening meals. After booking and our £50 non returnable deposit had been taken, were we then informed that they did not do evening meals on Sundays. On arrival they had very kindly booked us a restaurant a mile or so away, but we had taken a picnic as we did not wish to drive.
WAs a fantastic place with very friendly hosts, will def be back
