The staff was so mean...not helpful at all.. they all had ATTITUDE problems...the bathrooms were dirty and the food was HORRIBLE..... \nThe best thing about our vacation were the excursions we took and a small italian restaurant outside of the resort called the TRATTORIA... (must go) nicest people ever....
We had planned this trip months in advance. There was 11 of us altogether and we all had the same review and experience. I had searched online to get directions from San Jose airport and found very little to give me an idea. It had taken us all day to fly from Tampa,fl to get to the actual hotel. We landed and they tried to scam us at the car rental place. If we had taken a bus it would have taken even longer. We made it to the ferry in about 2 hours but had to wait another 2 to get on it. Once at the hotel it looked great, once in our rooms and it ended there. The rooms were clean but smelled like mold and mildue. We tried to change rooms and they pretended to not speak english. The beds were lumpy and uncomfortable. The food was horrible, it was made in mass quantities so there is no taste and everyone in our group would get sick after each meal. The pool was the worst. After we all came home ,half the group had ear and eye infections from the dirty pool water. My son and myself both came down with strep. I wouldn't stay in that hotel again. I will say evrything looked great and they had some good nightly shows but it's all in spanish so it made it hard to follow. The country itself was the best part. We ziplined and went to tortuga island, road 4 wheelers and horses down the beach. The best meals and events were outside of the hotel. I warn you to try a different place than this we had a great price and barely got what we paid for.
The staff at Barcelo are wonderful! Had a great time. Yes, the food is not the best but everything else made up for it. Edwin is wonderful as is Gerald. Would recommend Barcelo. If you go look for Steven on the beach to book your outings. He is great!
Nice place, very clean ,nice beach....great place to kick back. or kick back or relax.
definately not worthy of a 5 star rating..poor quality food...service not exceptional....nice enough but nothing special...should be downgraded to 3 or 4 star...would not go back again. journey to the hotel was good, beautiful countryside and views.
My son and Daughter in-law took my husband myself and their 2 Boys 11 and 8. We had a marvlous time. The only thing was that the pool could have been cleaner and the rooms were spacious and very comfortable but as the week went on the housekeeping was a little lax with the niceities ie. the towels left on the bed somedays they were there and some not. The staff were more than accomidating and great with the kids. We went ziplinning in Montazuma and that was an experiance that I would not miss the guides were very understanding of the uncertanity that we felt at first safety was top of their list always. They put us at ease and truley cared that we have a great time with them. I would go back in a heartbeat !!! The flight from San Jose to Tambor was great well worth the extra money although we were told that we missed a great trip quotthe sites are amazingquot . And lastly dont forget the 70 SPF no matter how tough your skin is plus it costs $* USD for a bottle at the hotel and in any town that we visited.
For the money, It was a great value. Food at the buffet was good, nicely prepared, and quite tasty. The omlette station for breakfast was great. However, the restaurants left something to be desired. The rooms were adequate, comfortable and clean. The first room we got was in a far corner of the hotel, so we asked for our room to be changed. Being the weekend it was extremely busy with locals who come for a day trip, or for a night or so. They did put us up in a far better room for five of the seven days we were there. The staff was pleasant, and very cooperative. One suggestion: Definately arrange to fly from San Jose airport to Tambor Airport (which is adjacent to the hotel), and back. There are many local airlines, and charters flying to and from. We learned the hard way. We took a taxi from the airport to the hotel, appx $200 each way. However when we got to the Puntarenas, there was only one ferry operating, and it delayed us for 3 additional hours. the whole trip took us 7 hours. Needless to say we took a flight back to San Jose which was arranged by the travel agency office in the hotel. It was only $ 80.00 per person (we were three of us), so it was only $ 40.00 more than a taxi. Flight time - 20 minutes. Heaven.
Part of going to a new place is the expectation. I believe with the right information in advanced you will LOVE this hotel. The rooms are normal hotel rooms, the grounds are absolutely beautiful. The pool is huge and they have a massive pool for children which never got old on our 5 day stay. The food was very good, breakfast was exceptional. The other meals were good, but nothing spectacular. For every three nights you stay you get 1 night at the steak or seafood restaurant which is amazing. They have LOTS of activities during the day ad a beautiful nature park with horses, birds, alligators, a butterfly farm and sometimes people see monkey's o the property, however we did not. Their are activities for kids which are wonderful, but here is what you need to know. If you just want something fun for your children to do for a change of pace so you can take a swim or go to lunch on the property this would be okay. This is not the kind of program I would be comfortable leavin if your children are older, possibly, but their kids program is more of an activities program. Meet at mini golf at 1pm or pool party at 3pm. Lots of fun, but not for babies or long periods of time. they do have a room for young kids to color, paint watch tv, but again you wouldn't want to do this for long period of time. THE BEACH... the view is beautiful, however the beach is a bit rocky at high tide. During low tide your kids can run and play on the soft dark sand beach. when it is high tide, your feet are fine in the water, but you couldn't play on the beach. Fun!! Fun!!
My family has traveled extensively with our children and this was one of the best trips we've ever taken. I traveled to the Barcelo Tambor Hotel with my 3 teenage children (oldest daughter and husband couldn't travel), and was concerned that there wouldn't be enough to entertain them for 2 weeks. WOW was I wrong, not only does this hotel have plenty to do right on site from the pools, nature trails, horse riding, sea kayaking, exercising room, game area, miniature golf, and so much more but all the adventures that are a short distance away kept us all entertained during the entire trip. There is so much available that there is no way one could be bored, and if you wanted to do absolutely nothing you can stay by the pool or go down to the beach and lay around. There are two people we hired that were both fantastic; Octvio Montero of Tavo Tours ph# 011-506-2845-3180 or firstname.lastname@example.org he took us snorkeling on his boat to Tortuga Island and cooked us a private bar-b-q at the beach - AWESOME time and Gerrardo Zuniga at email@example.com he drove us for an entire day to Montezuma, Mal Peis, St. Teresa very patient and showed us lots of areas of interest. Both of these guys speak wonderful english and are a joy to be around. The hotel staff, the food, the facility was terrific. I wouldn't ask for anything different. I have read other reviews and for those that did not have a good time, I believe that these people went there with an attitude that resulted in a poor trip. If you travel here or anywhere with a positive, helpful, respectful attitude you will have a terrific time. The staff at Barcelo wants your trip to me FANTASTIC
Barcelo Tambor Beach is all you need to be in contact with wildlife, beach and the best comfort. You can enjoy Costa Rica's best of bests by having dinner at the restaurant, or watching the popular night shows. The resort is very clean, food is great, and the location is very appealing to those who appreciate nature and the best of Costa Rica. Long beaches, lots of palm trees, jungle and bird sanctuary and horse stables right on resort. Many iguanas and beautiful birds to see, and howler monkeys live in the trees of the area. Service was outstanding.
Everthing was awesome at Tambor! My Wife and I absoultlely love the place. Not a single problem. Minor the Bellman was very helpful.
the staff was unbelievably nice, they went out of there way to give you their best service. the hotel had so many things to choose from, you would not be bored at all no matter wat you did. the nightly entertainment shows were fun to watch, they had a kid show earlier in the night, and an adult show right after. the nightly club/bar was so much fun. i am definetly going back for longer. the trip is well worth the money you are paying. you will love it.
My wife and I just spent 3 days/nights at Tango Mar at Playa Tambor for our honeymoon (Nov 2009) and we cannot believe how wonderfully luxurious and romantic our stay there was. It is amazing how a reasonably priced resort as Tango Mar is could make a regular couple, like us, feel like we were rock stars. True, Tango Mar is a bit secluded, but as great as the staff were treating us, we had no reason to go anywhere else. The service was impeccable. They were friendly, funny and were extremely proficient in English. They brought drinks to you at the pool or to your room. The cleaning staff was methodical and left cute towel animals and fresh flowers on our bed every day (which my wife loved). The owner, was a most gracious host. She greeted us every time our paths crossed and she spent time every evening at dinner getting to know us and regularly asked us if there was anything we needed to make our stay better. The resort has a computer in the lobby for guests to use as long as they like, but they also offered wireless internet for $* a day, which isnt very much. They do offer Golf, Horse Riding, Spa Treatments, amongst other things, but we didnt partake in any of those, after spending months planning a wedding, we were happy to spend our days lounging by the pool, walking on the beach and eating and drinking. The menu is limited, but every item we ordered was absolutely delicious. I had the lasagna twice it was so good. Id go back there in a second, in fact, I better start saving for that ASAP!
If you're looking for serenity, this is the place. Great location, beautiful views and plenty to see and do, it's really all up to you. The owner (Hilde) and her employees were most hospitable, courteous and attentive. The oceanfront rooms are large, very clean and the view from our balcony was amazing. The food and drinks were delicious and plenty to choose from. Breakfast selection is excellent. The value of service and atmosphere exceeds the price you pay. Thank you Tango Mar family for making us feel so at home.
This is our first review ever after 25 years of travelling to some great places, but this resort is far too special not to mention. We went to Costa Rica to celebrate our anniversary and renew our wedding vows and left with so much more. The natural beauty that cradles this piece of paradise is so well complemented by the owner’s (Mama Hilde’s) vision and passion to create something great, along with her hospitality and that of her staff that functions as a family, a community with efficiency, purpose and a lot of heart making this place truly unique. Hannia (reservation/wedding coordinator) was prompt and thorough with our reservations and delivered again by performing a beautiful ceremony with such special attention to detail in her words and right down to placement of flower petals and palm trees. Xavier and Clara at reception was always most professional and on task. The servers/bartenders were most friendly and courteous. We enjoyed everything we ate. The Ceviche and Caesar’s salad, the best we’ve ever had, especially when prepared with Junior’s good humor and positive vibrations. Cocktails were delicious and refreshing, especially served up by Andres with his refreshing smile and matching disposition. Try his awesome Mojitos, welcome punch or he’ll gladly whip up something great out of fresh local fruits. Equally, Royland, Jesus, Gerardo, Eduardo, Javier and Dorial provided excellent service and are proficient in English but most importantly provide service with a smile and a genuine enthusiasm to make you feel at home. If there’s something they may not understand, they eagerly find someone who does. Our ocean front room with its priceless view was spotless from our first day to our last. Housekeeping was quick to respond to any requests. Off site, the zip lining was awesome, a must and can be easily arranged through the reservation desk. Although, we did spend most of our time at the property where there’s plenty to see and do. The beach is long and private w...
My husband and I stayed here for 4 days and loved it. The food was a little expensive but wonderful. The staff was great and even held dinner for us when we arrived late our first night. I would recommend arriving during the day since the road to the hotel is long, dirt and bumpy. The hotel itself was smaller than I expected but worth every penny.
we were here in march and im online right now thinking about going back here....heaven

Casa Chameleon was amazing! The staff was very friendly. Maria helped us book some excursions; fishing/snorkeling and canopy zip lining. Both were great. Our villa was very nice and clean. The private plunge pool was a perfect size and good temperature. I would recommend having a car, we were able to drive to the beach and to local restaurants. The food was very good, at the hotel and local restaurants. We ate dinner at Casa Chameleon only once, because it was very expensive. My husband and I would love to go back, we highly recommend!!!
