The hotel was generally nice. Pleasant staff and great location.
Parking was expensive and the rooms were small.
I loved our view. We were facing Lake Michigan. The location rocks. There is, of course, tons to do in the area. The room was clean, which is very important to us and the staff was SUPER friendly and helpful. We arrived 1 1/2 hour before check-in and although they didn't have a room ready, they took our bags for us so we could take a walk around the downtown area, then when we got back they upgraded us to a suite.
Though the room was clean, there were some cosmetic issues....paint peeling in the bathroom and there was rust in some areas in the shower. Also, when you open the blinds, on the top portion of the window frame, it looks like the paint has totally peeled off and its like a rust/brown color. I'm not sure if it was because we were in a corner room, but the bathroom was uncomfortably small. Also, I thought the parking was pretty high. We only stayed one night and did not take our vehicle out until we left the next day and it was $60. I did some research and it looks like it was the highest in the area. With that being said however, the valet staff was super friendly.
Check-in and check-out were handled quickly and with no fuss. The location is very good.
The bathroom was very small, had very old fixtures (specifically the toilet and bathtub), and lost hot water if the neighbor used the hot water simultaneously. The decor has as much charm as an old government office building. Someone stole the "do not disturb" placard from my door, resulting in the cleaning staff knocking to get in while my wife was still in the shower.
The second day we arrived to the room and found out that the house keeping had broken one of our new phone chargers so bad. The only solution they gave us was using tape to assemble the two partas of the wire broken. It is unbelievable that a hotel of such a high category has this awful customer service.
Location was excellent. Room was well appointed. Pool was great amenity.
Overnight parking was pricey.
Location at a huge $ premium.
there was no coffee pot 1st and 2nd day to use the rest of the assembly to make a cup or two. Just the packets of everything else. Refrigerator not working cold enough to keep any freezer packs frozen or my soda cans near a nice 45 degrees. All other cleaning tasks performed as you would expect. For 25% less in any hotel across the USA or $100 you would have got as good or better stay, but in downtown big city 4X that at less amenity satisfaction is what you get because you are in a prime location.
WiFi was spotty. Elevators slow sometimes.
Great view and location. Staff was friendly.
ALL vending machines were empty, as in ALL machines on every floor. Rooms were dirty, stained sheets. TV did not work on 2 separate occasions. AC was from the stone age, barely worked.
When we booked two rooms at kayak.com, we have already paid full price for the rooms. And when we checked in, receptionist told us that we have already paid and only charge $75 each room as guarantee and will give us back when we check out and leave. But in the end, they did not give us the two $75 back and charged two more of $49.5 on 19th early morning. And I told this to front desk and they say they will give back two 75 and there's no charge of two 49.5, which are actually charged on my card and never come back. What's worse, after we left, on 22th, they charged $124.55 on my card. So in total, they charged me $373.65, despite the fact I paid the rooms on Kayak.com. I asked my US colleague to contact their manager about this, but no one answered during working time!
My "extra special" room had no overhead lighting, no ability to control the temperature, and no towels. I called housekeeping at 6.15a to request that towels be delivered; no answer. My next call was to the front desk which advised that housekeeping does not come on duty util 7a and I'd have to wait at least an hour to receive towels. Nobody else was available because the front desk clerk was "the only person in the hotel at the moment"; and, I was told I should have checked for towels when I arrived in the room. The nerve!!! Business meetings do not wait and I had to shower and then towel off with my own pajamas. Never again. Stay ANYWHERE else.
It was a place to sleep.
The hotel has seen better days, even though it look like it had an upgrade within the last couple years. The bathroom is what I'd term a stand up only. It was very small. No counter top upon which to put travel kit. I've stayed in European hotels where bathrooms are typically smaller than standard in U.S. of discount to high end. This bathroom was smaller than European facilities. I'm average height and weight...if you are tall or on the heavy side, look elsewhere.
Location was ideal, was one of the cheapest hotels nearest the Loop. Staff were extremely accommodating too.
Rooms were dark, showers needed an update, and the wifi was weak.
Staff were friendly
Too noisy - you could hear whatever is going on outside your room. Questionable if they really clean the rooms at all.
There really wasn't much about the Essex that I enjoyed. I will definitely NOT stay here again. Ever.
Two pipe heating/cooling is OK.... unless they leave your window open multiple COLD days and only have the AC working. Staff felt lazy and laid back. There is an odor permeating the building. I imagine it's the two pipe heating/cooling that shows its age. Window was broken on arrival. Two lights in the room, which is a REALLY dark room, were broken as well.
Bathroom lighting was poor. No magnifying make-up mirror.altho w such poor lighting wiuld not have mattered. Tub gkoor super slippery first night. But was improved at my request by second.
The employees were very nice and accommodating.
That they do not have a loyalty program
The staff was friendly and helpful. The room was great. The bed was comfortable. The pool was fun. We could walk to the museum campus from the hotel. Great stay!
the location is pretty good, excelente restaurants around, the park in front, trasnportation at the corner. The lobby and the rooms very clean
some areas of the hotel look kinda old
I tried to give a noise complaint and the staff didn't seem to care to much and brushed me off
Location was very good. Managers were friendly and worked out a few problems that arose.
Valet parking was 60$ a night. As a young couple with not much money, I thought the price of the hotel was very affordable and very luring. The catch is valet parking. We weren't able to do some of the activities we had planned because parking was so expensive. I felt like some of the employees didn't care about us because we were so young and just rushed through the check in process. It was really cold at night. I would recommend checking out the hotel next door. Essex Inn isn't a place for families or younger couples.
Location is spot on, you're located in the vicinity of magnificent mile, museums, state street and millennium park. "Great location"
Outdated, leaky tube, loud doors, rooms are too close to one another and needs more detailing. "Dirty, moldy and peeling paint"
Wonderful location for sightseeing.
Pool was chilly 2 out of the 3 days during our stay.
I liked the location
The staff was rude for most of the trip. The policies were not made clear and had to ask two different people to get an answer
Valet was quick and easy. Room was spacious and clean.
I requested a King and received two doubles. I was also on the floor with the pool and the entire floor smelled like chlorine. Also there are no individual thermostats in each room so it got pretty cold at night.
Proximity to Soldier Field and good food nearby
You could tell it was an older place due to the wear and tear around the room and bathroom
The bed was very comfortable.
I booked here vs other hotel because they have "fitness center" and indoor pool/sauna. The fitness center was closed the ENTIRE time. The weekend we went there was snow and the fitness center was leaking so it was closed. The sauna was warm at best and the pool temp was freezing and pool was not clean. I will not stay there again.
