Red Roof Inn Chicago Downtown Magnificent Mile, Illinois is a pet friendly, family friendly hotel. This hotel is near Michigan Ave. in Chicago, IL and close to the Chicago Loop/US-41. Check in age is 21 years or older. Fee for Parking and Valet.
The location is perfect for Mag Mile shopping!! The employees were very nice. The price was also very low in comparison to neighboring hotels.
The room thermometer did not work. They tried to fix it and said if it didn't work we would have to switch rooms. The room was 77 and 78 degrees all day/night. The room size is very small. if you do not plan on being in your room much it is fine.
Location was excellent
Room smelt of damp; condition of room was 'well used'
Service was good. Checking in and out went smoothly. I liked being a block off from Michigan avenue and was in an area with a good selection of restaurants. Clean hotel room. Everything in it worked.
Not a lot of floor space because the beds took up most of the floor in the standard room. Elevators were extremely slow. Noisy guests. Some would just hang out in the hall to talk or use their phones. Bathroom could have used some new tiles. Tiny bathroom. Didn't like that the switch for the bathroom light was outside the bathroom.
The location and staff were amazing! You can't beat the price for such a perfect spot in the city. You can walk to navy pier, Michigan Avenue, rooftop bars, and key Chicago spots just blocks from your door. We never needed a taxi or took the metro due to such a convenient location. Also, the rooms were clean and perfect for a weekend getaway for my friend and I.
They need a mini refrigerator! And could use some renovations soon. Besides that, its a great hotel for the price.
When I checked in I stood in front of the clerk who was on the phone for like 15 mins. He even put someone on hold and picked up another line. He talked to staff members who were at the desk regarding his phone call before finally someone else came out to help me. I'm not sure if this person actually worked at the desk, so it was great that they stepped in. However, she was not friendly and looked annoyed to have to do so the entire time she helped me. Parking was very expensive and offsite. Both our bathtub and bathroom sink would not drain. We had to use our trashcan to scoop up water and drain it into the toilet so the next person could take a shower. The tile in the bathroom was broken with serveral pieces missing. The room was tiny, barely big enough for the beds that were in it. The hallways smelled bad. The location was not worth the money spent here. Very disappointed.
Location is great for visiting navy pier
Door key did not work. After switching out keys a couple times and finding out TV does not work. We asked for a different room. Wifi did not work. Shower head did not work right. So the water just drips. Bed was not comfortable at all. Think we might pay more for a better hotel next time.
I like the location.
The bathroom toilet made constant noise. The elevators were not functioning properly. One of the them stay out of service almost the entire of my stay. One of television had no reception, it wouldn't pickup any channels.
One block off Michigan in the heart of everything. Wonderful responsive staff
Hotel is old and our rooms were tiny. 3 adults using one little bathroom was a challenge. No breakfast included but good restaurants within a block. No onsite parking - valet only at $50 per night was a surprise.
I liked the view
I am not picky when it comes to rooms but this room did not meet my cleanliness requirements. There was hair in the shower, on the sinks and on the floor. I will not stay here again
The room we were moved to (on the eighth floor) for the last night was SO much nicer than the 2nd floor room. It looked, felt, and smelled clean, and was bigger, and there was a real comforter on the bed! Wtf? If you get a bad room, ask right away for a switch!! The quality was vastly different.
I was in Chicago for an academic conference and the wi-fi was completely out for our entire stay, and the staff seemed to have no idea what was happening with it (we were told it would be fixed tomorrow three times). And the first time we mentioned it the staffer said "Well, it's a free service." No, butthead, I'm paying you $170 a night, and I would be paying you $0 and staying elsewhere if I knew I wouldn't have working internet the whole time. Horrible room on second floor. The bathroom smelled like mildew and waste (really the whole room did). The TV remote barely worked. We had 2 thin blankets on the bed, and when we asked for a comforter they brought another thin blanket. The fourth day we were there, we found a GIANT cockroach in the bathroom. Disgusting. We were moved to a different room on the eighth floor, which was much nicer. We ultimately got a $50 adjustment, when really we should have gotten at least one night free. We just didn't feel like arguing with the manager.
No desk and chairs
Though costly, it was the best of a bad lot. Well-situated downtown for access to restaurants, coffee shops, etc.; and still within walking distance of Moody Bible Institute.
Found food and utensils left in the drawers of the dresser, no doubt simply overlooked by housekeeping which leaves one to wonder how much is being overlooked.
Location is good if you want to shop at magnificent mile. Pretty far from the bean (to walk)
Dirty, dusty, upon checking in found that toilet wasn't working. Had to have it fixed twice. One of the lady receptionist was so rude and unfriendly. We desperately needed help to print out boarding pass and she was reluctant to help. Every day I pray that there's no bed bug. If you want a nice vacation without worrying about the bed bugs, if the toilet is gonna work, or if they'lol accidentally charge extra on Ur card (read on previous reviews) then stay away.
Loved the location, right by Michigan avenue. Decent room for the price.
My boyfriend and I got in early thinking maybe we could check in early. They were sold out the night before so we were then told to come back at 4 and our room would be ready. We came back at 430 and were told again that because of the type of room we had it still wasn't ready. Really it had been over 3 hours. Then we were told to wait another 45 minutes until our room would be ready. Waiting in there cramped lobby just wasn't ideal. When we finally got to check in to our room all of the computers kept freezing and moving from one end the the other.
Nothing wrong with it really. Small rooms and a little snafu with the check in. A little shabby. If your very picky at all, this may not be the place for you.
What I really appreciated was the location of the hotel. I bought lots of souvenir everywhere I go, but since the hotel is always located in the middle of the sightseeing spot, I was able to stop by my room and put them. Moreover, when I went there, the weather was not good. But thanks to good location, I could wait in my room until weather resume.
location, staff was really good. price
the smell of the room, it did not feel clean, windows were really dirty.
Smelled like nothing had been cleaned in a year. Looked like a dump.
Nice hotel, friendly staff, adequate clean room.
Valet hassled me outside telling me I needed to move my car when I was NOT in the valet zone. He was obnoxious.
In one of our rooms, it was dirty. The other room had damage to it by the door and the bathroom smelt like horrible. They then moved us to 2 other rooms on the same floor. One room was fine the other one, once again it was dirty and hair on the towel rack. 30 mins after we moved our stuff into the new room, our cards got deactivated. We weren't there for more than an hr and all this happened. When I complained they said they could only refund me 25 dollars. It was a horrible stay! After I checked out I found over 200 dollars charged from them. When I called they didn't know why.
I liked the fact that they allowed me to leave my bags with them early in the day since checkout wasn't until late afternoon.
Wish they had a breakfast area.
There were numerous hairs all over the room and bathroom. Nothing was clean. Terrible beds. Maybe it is still a decent price for the area? I would absolutely pay more next time if I wanted this area. Not worth it to me. It was far worse then the youth hostels in Mexico where you pay $8 a night and have the lowest of expectations.
Very good price, nice location. Not a pleasant experience, though. I travelled from overseas, and only stay for one night to attend the meeting. For a hotel in Chicago downtown that charge less than 80 dollars per night, I did not expect a lot. However, I need to submit this review because it was not pleasant at all. First, the room is dark. Second, the television is broken. Third, the room is not clean. I saw hair on the bed and in the bath tub. There are even bugs on the linen!! I did not believe it when I saw a black dot moving on the paper. When I try to take the dot away, I heard a clear sound just like you squeezed on something. Then I saw the blood come out of the black dot and contaminate my meeting agenda. This drove me nuts!! Besides, the faucet dripped all night. I was too tired to call the front desk in the middle of the night for just a short stay. At the time I checked out, The front desk people seemed to be nice. I told them the the TV is broken and water keeps dripping from the faucet all night. Honestly, I did not have chance to send my long complaints to them because I was urged to leave. Ver possibly they can provide better service if I complained, but I probably will not be courageous enough to go back again.
clean, price, location
The floors were hard wood.
The staff, the atmosphere. The hotel and rooms were dirty and literally 4 feet apart from each other. The windows look like you're in jail. It was horrible. Worst downtown in Downtown, Chicago.
Great great great price. Seriously. Location was fabulous as well.
The hallway smelled like the inside of a joint and one of the two (tiny) elevators smelled kinda like a butt. But at the price we got...don't even care. Also the room smelled totally fine.
The room was smallish and had minimal amenities, but clean and comfortable. I was able to get a good night's sleep, catch up on Internet business and the flat screen TV worked well. The elevators worked well with minimal waiting. Check-in and check out was very smooth. Michael at the front desk was very customer focused. The desk for lap top was adequate and lighting was sufficient. I did not spend a lot of time in the room, so it was perfect for my needs. For shopping on Michigan Ave & State St the location is excellent. I could walk to my conference at the Loop in half an hour or a $6 cab ride. Many good restaurants and a Trader Joe's are within a few block's walk.
The bath space was cramped - not much counter space for grooming equipment. The shower spray was not very strong, but I could get wet and bathe OK. I could not find any movie channels or pay per view on the TV, but the cable selection was adequate. The heating unit was noisy, but the room temperature was OK
The size, condition, and age of the room.
When you visit a big, busy city like Chicago, who sits around their hotel room all day? What you need is a convenient location, safe environment, essential comforts, and that is was Red Roof Downtown provides. An older building but one block off Michigan so at the heart of the action. No coffee shop in the lobby, but the whole city is at your doorstep. Rooms were well appointed, clean, well cared for, staff was courteous and prompt and professional, rate cannot be beat for downtown lodging. Leave the luxury food, shopping, and adventures to the city, book a solid clean safe place to sleep with Red Roof.
Our toilet ran a bit, simple fix to the flush chain helped. One elevator seemed to be out of order so occasionally a wait there.
The value and location was excellent. The valets were pretty quick.
The staff was slow and gave us the wrong kind of room, but were friendly for the most part and tried hard. The halls, rooms and other spaces are small and dingy/old and weren't very clean, but also weren't exceptionally gross.
Staff was exceptionally informed re the City and its amenities.Staff was exceptionally helpful and calmly friendly. I was given a suit which was such a treat as I was alone and spent evenings at the hotel. Having a sofa and separate area to read watch tv and make calls was lovely
It was perfectly serviceable in a central location, proximate to many dining options and reasonably accessible to public transport. The price was reasonable (I booked through a third party). There was a nice big ironing board and iron in the room.
It's a cheap hotel and met my expectations fine, but if you were expecting extensive amenities or a modern decor or whatever, you'd be disappointed. You have to contact them after the stay to recoup a "safe" fee if you don't use the safe. The staff at the desk when I called in advance said there wouldn't be an iron in the room, though in fact there was.
