Casa do Fontao - Amarante - Building

9.8 Excellent (487 reviews)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Located in a quiet neighborhood with a beautiful view from the house. Very friendly landlady, we got some local cheese and delicious wine upon arrival. We really enjoyed our stay here.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything especially the verandah where we sat watching the sunset.
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Such a unique experience. Mrs Luisa, our host, welcomed us the minute we walked in with wine and cheese. Her house is a perfect blend of modern and antique. The room was gigantic and the breakfast so charming and personal . This truly feels like we spent a night over at my grandma's place had I had a Portuguese grand mother. Highly recommended.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Luisa was wonderful. She greeted us as we drove up with hugs and a warm welcome. She invited in and served us cheese and wine. What a nice start our stay. The immaculate rooms were huge, and had everything that you could possibly need, we felt like royalty. The breakfast was great, fruit, cake, eggs what every we could want. Luisa was the perfect hostess, making us dinner reservations, and tea when we came home. The Villa is close to the wineries and not far from Porto (about 40 minutes).
Cons: Everything was perfect, there wasn't anything that she could improve on.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful location , lovely apartmant , very nice staff
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Louisa, our host, welcomed us with openned arms. The rooms have 12 foot ceilings, all equiped with outstanding wooden furnitures of great value, beautifull chinas et details. Includes a breakfast that would fill 7 lions... Louisa will offer you more than you can take.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: I'd seen the previous reviews and how people describe Casa do Fontao as impressive, fabulous, elegant, wonderfully luxurious, gorgeous, an absolute delight. For my partner, our 2 friends and I, each and every word is correct and more. How someone has rated this family-run guesthouse as average is beyond us? Really, I don't know what you're looking for if its only average. Our 2 bedrooms / bathrooms were both enormous and elegant and we had a choice of several. The whole build is stunning, very old charm, lots of wood and old-style masonry. Clearly it was a place of beauty when it was built and it still is. As for our host Luisa, she just can't do enough for you. Bless her she even offered up her husband as a free taxi service to take us to a restaurant at night, an offer we politely declined. When you arrive at Casa Fontao, Luisa takes you out onto a veranda (which looks out across a wooded valley) for local cheese and wine, the perfect pick-me-up after a 9 hour drive from Murcia in Spain. The breakfasts were a continental feast of cold meats, cheese, bread rolls, pineapple, melon, strawberries, oranges, yogurts and cake. Tea and coffee pots are bottomless! Luisa wanted us to have scrambled eggs as "the English like eggs". We weren't bothered but she brought a plateful anyway! Charming! Seriously, we can't rate this stay highly enough. If you're visiting and staying in Amarante, in itself a charming medieval town in a quiet part of Portugal, then look no further than Casa do Fontao.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Dona Luísa was the nicest host of our trip. Always helpful and kind she carefully welcomed us to her home. She greeted us with a bottle of local green wine and cheese with biscuits, served in the beautiful balcony. After a lovely stay, Dona Luísa prepared us a varied, colourful breakfast with fresh fruit, cake and local bread. A great experience!
Cons: Depends on your home decor preference - If you’re looking for clean, minimalistic decor this is definitely not your place since the house maintains a rustic, late XX century style.

9.5 Excellent
Pros: Stayed 4 nights and used the hotel as a base to see the surrounding area and Porto. The breakfasts were good as were the dinners. Visited Porto for one day which was 1 hour away via tolled freeway (only 4 Euro). The countryside around Amarante was worth visiting as well as Amarante itself
Cons: Everything was fine
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing place , superb room , very nice breakfast
Cons: Nothing
7.0 Good
Pros: we were expecting a view of the River. Which we had if I stuck my head out the window. there seemed to be metal frames which extended out from the roof. Like a dormer. I was surprised there were on 20 or so rooms , the rest were appartments.
Cons: Service at dinner. there were only about 4 tables. So it wasn't busy. yet when my bill came , I was clearly overcharged. If I hadn't checked it and just signed it to the room. I would have never known.
5.5 Okay
Pros: Excellent location. Nice views over the old town. Nice building. The bell boy parked our car and carried the bags to the room.
Cons: A very dark and dated small room. A very tiered and dingy looking bathtub with an old glass protection. The water,in both tub and hand wash basin, takes a long time to drain. The general decoration’s a bit over the top pretentious. The food in the restaurant, left me down. No imagination. They should mention that the front of the property, overlooking the town, doesn’t belong to the hotel and the majority of the rooms are facing the back.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic Michelin star restaurant. Outstanding!
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Location was excellent. Breakfast was very very good. Room size was brilliant
Cons: Room was a bit gloomy. Maybe some brighter paint around the room. Was put in a handicap room which was not asked for. Felt a bit awkward
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel was wonderful! We had a beautiful corner room, with a sitting room and views from all windows. The bathroom was huge, and we had a separate dressing area. The dining room was great and the breakfast was fabulous! The staff were all so helpful. The pool was huge and a lovely place to relax... there is a large grassy area, and lots of places to lounge by the pool. It was a surprise to have such a a resort setting in the middle of the beautiful town of Amarante! I highly recommend this wonderful Relais et Chateaux!
Cons: We loved everything!

Pros: The place was really amazing! Room was big and clean, with comfortable bed and nice bathroom. The owner was super kind and smiling and helpful even when we couldn't communicate in any language. Lady doesn't speak English and we don't speak Portuguese, but we used google translate and everything was fine! :) Breakfast was waiting for us at the morning and it was tasty and big enough. And the best was landscape - the view of swimming pool and mountains around. It was perfect.

6.8 Good
Pros: The hotel is nicely located, with well-designed common areas.
Cons: A hotel with such aspirations should think about its approach to guests and the object's operation. Our room was in front of parking and was dark. There was no lamp at the top, and the small lamps next to bed were so badly chosen that it was impossible to read a book or newspaper. The hotel did not warn, that there are more apartments with swimming pools being built in the area, so if someone is looking for silence, he will not find it here. The hotel also did not warn that it organizes parties for children (communion party). As a result, kids run shouting around the grounds, so that you can not rest even by the pool. For unknown reasons, the person cleaning the leaves starts working at 8 am using a loud leaf blower. It is a pity that the hotel did not look after such things, because it has potential, which has not been used yet.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Great fun staying on a wine estate, combined with good food, great wine and wonderful views! Some of the best sunsets I have ever seen...
Cons: They are still building new rooms, so a bit noisy at 7am
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The location, staff and overall quality was excellent.
Cons: As we were traveling with a young dog we had to have room service and the menu was limited and food a bit disappointing. I suspect the restaurant was good but cannot comment
9.3 Excellent
Pros: I reserved wine tasting wrong date, but wine steward give us good explanation for several kinds of wines with sophisticated local dishes at dinner. And sparkling wine at the breakfast was incredibly luxury. Food was fantastic too.
Cons: Spa and dressing was not bounding, guests need to walk beside of reception.

9.0 Excellent
Pros: breakfast was very good ! The rooms were very nice.
Cons: I didn't realize that when I reserved I actually reserved an Apartment , which meant that we had to go across the street from the actual Hotel. The Hotel was totally booked so we could not change our rooms. I also did not like that I could not check in when I arrived because the rooms were not cleaned yet, I had requested the early check in because we had a wedding to attend. The receptionist did an awesome job of getting the rooms cleaned as quickly as she could which was so helpful. She was truly very nice.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The new hotel in this interior region of the country is truly a great place to stay. We loved it! Staff were friendly and helpful. We are hoping to go back someday.

9.5 Excellent
Pros: Location, lovely building, great decoration, shower
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was good. The common areas were very pretty. Everything was carefully placed and taken care.
Cons: We stayed in room 13. Please, don’t stay on that room. It is the room on the right side of the entrance, and it is faced to the main road, which makes the sleep very very difficult because of the constant noise.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Perfect location in a perfect scenic town. The staff are extremely friendly and the rooms are spacious and clean. We came early so our room wasn’t ready so they upgraded us to a river view room. Love it here
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything - best hostel I have been so far
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Located in the heart of Amarante, staff was lovely, rooms are cute (slightly small, if you need space though). Very arty in terms of set-up (what’s in a name). For those sensitive to bathroom practices, please note that the bathroom is en-suite and enclosed, but there is not a floor to ceiling wall, so the top maybe 50cm is open. I was not bothered by this at all. The bar/breakfast space is super stylish and cute, with a lovely outside terrace. This was the best value for money place we stayed in, during our stay in Portugal.
Cons: it was all great. If you really push me, speed of comms could be (a bit) faster, but it is by no means slow at the moment.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Nice place. Quiet and clean. Good breakfast and a nice view of the Tâmega river. Very friendly owners.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is a great mixture from hostel and hotel with a good atmosphere. The staff consists of a young very friendly and fresh team. A great plus was the location and as well the bar in the house. Even with bad weather conditions a great and pleasant stay. The breakfast was good, everything absolutely clean . The The free parking is absolutely near - you need to get an explanation how to reach (!)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I loved how light and airy the space felt - like a breath of fresh air!
7.0 Good
Pros: The hostel is very beautiful but not very practical. Staff is too limited, only one person that has to do everything from check-in, to preparing breakfast, attending the bar... There is no soundproof on the windows and it was very difficult to sleep with all the noise.

Pros: Beautifully situated en designed quinta in the heart of the Tamega-valley. Panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, a small river beach, beautiful gardens, a refreshing swimming pool, gardens full of flowers and vegatables, woodland, the vineyard and some animals. There is a lot to explore and enjoy ... Fernando makes you feel at home with a welcome drink from his one vineyard. You can use bikes for free. The ecopista will lead you to the charming town of Amarante. Our stay at Quinta das Escomoeiras was one of the highlights of our trip to Northern Portugal and Spanish Galicia. Absolutey recommendable. Thank you Fernando and ladies!

Cons: WiFi isn’t good in all rooms
9.5 Excellent
Cons: Arriving to destination is tricky, unpaved & narrow roads
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This place is sensational. The owner is a very nice man who came to meet us in the village after we became lost. The view is spectacular. Rooms are very comfortable and spotless. Breakfast was delicious. Staff are lovely. Fernando has such a passion for the land and for being as self sufficient as possible. Not only did we taste his lovely wines but jams, olives and olive oils. A bonus for us were the most gorgeous donkey Julietta and her equine companion Sereia. We would love to come back here one day.
Cons: Nothing to complain about at all.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: We enjoyed the peace and quiet of the property. We asked for a room with a balcony and had beautiful views from our balcony. The host was very friendly and helpful and made us feel at home.
Cons: The bed was comfortable but we would have liked a bigger bed. The Wifi was not good in the room, but strong in the lounge area. Breakfast was good, but a little more variety would help. We would love to be able to make coffee somewhere, especially since the property is a little remote. The property is a little further from the village than expected.

Cons: No formal restaurant only a snack bar with limited menu.
6.8 Good
Pros: I really liked the girl that was in charge for all the Hotel. I felt sorry of her because she was doing massage, making our lunch, being around. She did winderful job but that is not the corect service and owners shouldpay more people to be around not only one person.
Cons: As I mentioned abowe it is a shame to use one person for all services.

Cons: no great place to eat in the aera not much within walking distance to see or do
7.0 Good
Pros: The weather was awful so it was great to swim in the heated indoor pool, the other spa facilities were "okay" albeit in need of a little updating.
Cons: The hotel bar and restaurant was very disappointing, the menu was underwhelming for a 4 star hotel. Also the bar states that it is open until midnight but we struggled to get a drink just after 11pm - which was not what you need having witnessed England lose in a semi-final.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Nice quiet hotel. I was treated with my breakfast iny room at no charge, nice! After breakfast I went down to the Spa where I enjoyed the relaxing jacuzzi, steam, and sauna. All included.
Cons: The water in the bath was adequately warm however not hot and I like a hot bath. Also the towel warmer wasn't working, minor issue.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: It is a beautiful place to stay, the ambiance is great, the lady was amazing. This the second time we have stayed there, we would highly recommend it.
Cons: There was nothing we did dislike.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: We had a very pleasant stay in Casa Nogueira. The hostess was a friendly, warm person, helpfull if we needed anything. "My house is your house", she said. She made breakfast every morning. The second evening she was making chestnuts and she gave us a whole bunch to taste/eat :)! The house was in a very small and quiet village somewhere in the mountains, where it looked as if time had stood still for a few decades. A perfect place to relax. From here you could go to the parque natural de alvao or do some winetasting in the alto douro - although the latter is a little bit further away by car (you by the way definately need a car to get here). I would recommend this place to anyone who would go to the alto douro area in Portugal.

The breakfast was delicious: fresh bread, homemade jam, butter, homemade cake, coffee and cheese. It was the most beautiful house during our 2-weeks journey around the Portugal.

Pros: Amazing experience in an authentic farm house in Portugal. We liked the old style rooms and atmosphere. Gorgeous gardens and pool as well. Guests share breakfast around a large table in the mornings.
Cons: It is a bit difficult place to drive to if you're not familiar with the area. Also can get a little warm without air conditioning.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I've travelled all over the world, but this is by far one of the best places I've been. The atmosphere is stunning, the food is excellent, staff is very friendly. It's a mystery to me why only two or three rooms were occupied during our stay. A simple comparison: I was in Iceland this winter and I paid more for a bunkbed without breakfast! This beats anything!

7.0 Good
Pros: The hotel is very near to the restaurants and bars/cafés. Very close to one of the highway accesses. The room was clean. The staff is very nice.
Cons: The breakfast is a bit poor. Not a lot of choice of bread or cheese, per example. The room was facing the back of the hotel and the view was just terrible. Difficult to park. There is a paid car park but it's closed on Sundays and Bank Holidays and from 10pm until 8am.

Pros: breakfast excellent as always. One of the best from all the places we have stayed. Lots of upgrading of general decor etc almost complete.

Pros: Ideally located 5 minutes walk from the bridge & historic center, with large array of restaurants close to the bridge area. Nice staff at the reception. Good breakfast with choice. We took the family suite room : clean & spacious, with 2 large double beds and a large bathroom (with bathtub & shower). No closing door between the 2 family rooms (but it was no problem for us). Private car parking (digicode) located 50 m away from the hotel.
Cons: Nothing to report.

Pros: The bedroom is hotel quality, I consider this to the level of a 3star hotel, and maybe bigger. The bed was super comfortable and the bathroom spacious and clean. Good free wifi.
Cons: I would complaint about the lack of shampoo, the lack of a hair dryer in the room, and some table or something so if you want to do something in the computer you can.
