Overview Reviews
My home is near the village of planfoy and 6 km from St Etienne, 50km from Lyon, in the PILAT protected park, ideal for weekend or holidays a small private road 3km from the village there leads through the dam. With many sports just mountain bike trails feet, shopping and hiking, climbing, climbing, skiing (area 1km), snowshoeing, etc. we have two Lamas that can walk on the lunge or bater like donkeys to go with the picnic
10.0 Excellent
Pros: So this is quite possibly the nicest hotel I have ever stayed in. The journey to the property was a little tricky. The instructions were completely clear but after 7 hours of travelling, my brain was not. Thank you to Rachel and some wonderful guests for guiding us in. I promise we will learn french for next time. When we finally checked in, we were utterly exhausted but this was the absolute best place to be. The location is superb, the layout, main building and garden are better than you can imagine. The room i stayed in was split into two levels. The ground floor was the bedroom with upstairs being a bathroom, powerful shower and small working area - should the occasion take your fancy. We slept as heavily as it was possible to sleep on the first night. When we woke up the next day, it was clear that i can become "King of the dogs" on account of having picked up and thrown their ball. This seemed to be the greatest thing in the world to these animals and even as someone who does not care for dogs, they made the stay much better. They followed me constantly and I imagine that they also have fond memories of me. During the day, the place looks even better. The views are amazing, located in the middle of a Forrest, you can see villages across the valleys and mountains. We drove over to these villages (it's really easy when you know where you are), they are stunning and the locals were absolutely delightful food was great. Breakfast is exceptional, so was dinner and the wine on site is not to bad either. All in all, I left knowing that I will be back next year. Although we stayed for only two days, it was the most relaxing two days of my holiday.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful area, very comfortable rooms, excellent breakfast
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast and location
Cons: Drive way a problem with Motor Cycle due to local repairs to the Damn
9.3 Excellent
Pros: It is really remote, in the middle of a forest, overlooking a reservoir and Napoleonic 3rd dam. However, the dam was subject to some major repairs and the reservoir virtually empty. We loved the 3 resident Border collies and 2 llamas. Apparently there are horses too. The breakfast was good and plentiful and Rachel prepared us an evening meal; a huge salad. It is a very pretty walk down to the dam.
Cons: The trek through the forest was an added bonus in a way, but other guests may be a little apprehensive about having to drive down a narrow, bumpy and often muddy track. As the works on the dam had closed the road to La Fortance, the only way to get there is via a lengthy detour which includes the 3 kilometres of track. It is not well signed, but suffice to say that it IS the track on the corner right next to the bridge!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Ok, first of all La Fortance is not that easy to find... we had quite the adventure getting there, mostly due to arriving at night (it was pitch black outside). The road was a little challenging as well, also due to arriving in the dark - we took a wrong turn somewhere... when we arrived however it was just magical! The architecture and design of La Fortance is truly unique - just like the two lamas living there :) We were greeted by the lovely owner Raquel and her three adorable dogs (who love to play football by the way - the dogs i mean :) ). Raquel had already prepared a wonderful meal in her beautiful kitchen for us (we had called her in advance, letting her know the time of our arrival, asking if it was still possible to eat that late - it was not a problem at all!!), including salads, vegetables, bread, wine, different kinds of cheese and salami, pie, etc. After we went straight to bed, exhausted from the journey. The breakfast the next morning also didn't leave anything to be desired, Raquel even made fresh crepes for us. MERCI BEAUCOUP!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location, great hostess. Magic place!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location, design ,comfort, cosiness cleanliness and hospitality
Cons: Tricky rough dirt track 3 miles, into forest ,very high in mountain region, need a robust vehicle. However this is due to roadworks and detours, the property is a retreat in a very iscolated area. Worth the treck!!.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Rachel is a wonderful host and Fortance is a rare find. The room is so romantic. Everything is so beautiful and cleverly built from natural materials. The dogs were friendly and made us feel at home. We arrived late on a Sunday. We couldn’t find anything to eat on the way. Rachel said: go make yourself comfortable in the room and come back in an hour. We came back to a wonderful huge salad with vegetables fresh from a nearby farm. Then home made Cunnel, a vegetarian local dish. Rachel made it in a sublime mushroom sauce. W had a bottle of wine and cheese for desert. Heaven.
Cons: Nothing. Prepare yourself that it’s hard to find. You need a car and Rachel’s map. But I found that to be part of the charm. It’s a paradise in the middle of a natural forest.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Peaceful, clean - just idilic. Breakfast was fab, although we do not speak French and Rachel spoke very little English, we managed, with lots of laughs, to make ourselves understood. A very special place. Oh and it’s true, the dogs are just lovely.
Cons: Nothing about the property, just be prepared for a slightly rough track - but it’s Sooooooo worth it!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Our host Rachel is a true artist. Her property is beautifully designed & renovated, keeping the French old charm but including modern facilities. Extremely comfortable & clean. The only habitat in the middle a national park & with views to die for. We arrived tired & hungry & Rachel whipped up an amazing delicious evening meal at short notice. Our whole stay was enriched with the great company of our host - lots of laughter & warmth & great advice for our travels from there to our next destination.
Cons: That we couldn't stay longer!

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Perfect hosts! They were extremely friendly and accommodating and they spoke excellent English along with other languages. They were very helpful and informative and even walked into Town with us a couple of times to help with translation. They really went out of their way to help including escorting us to a nearby gas station and introducing us to a neighbor who helped us complete my French genealogy. Very clean, private and roomy accommodations and the breakfasts were more than adequate. Loved visiting this area -- it is just lovely!
Cons: We can't think of a thing!

Breakfast was plentiful with delicious jams made by Roselyne. A great experience all round.

We give this place and its owners a big thumbs-up.

7.5 Good
Pros: Location and views were amazing; bed was very comfortable and we really enjoyed doing nothing next to the pool for a couple of days; unusual to have so many animals in and around the garden but they were no problem what so ever. Good French practice for my daughter "chatting" to the owners daughter who was very helpful and friendly. I'd happily stay again if in the area - making sure I bought towels with me.
Cons: Wifi was very poor (and didn't work for one whole day). Very surprised towels were not included which should have been called out on the booking.com website. We booked for 2 adults and 2 teenage children; our host expected our teenagers to share a single sofa bed, and declined to provide additional bedding for the other sofa bed. Not sure if I booked incorrectly but don't think so, luckily we happened to have sleeping bags with us. Extra €5 for each use of the washing machine was a touch high. Directions to the property would have been appreciated/
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Exceptionnal view from the jacuzzi and swimming pool, very quiet and private place, breakfast was royal. Clean accomodation in ancient mansion. Big Garden with acces to private natural valley and wood.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Great location on the outskirts of Firminy, a short (downhill) walk to the Corbusier world heritage sites (which is why we visited Firminy). Freddie, the proprietor, was welcoming (our lack of French notwithstanding!) and beer and wine available at a very reasonable price. Lovely countryside views, well equipped kitchen for self catering if required and a big comfy bed. Also a great menagerie of animals including a three legged goat!
Cons: The spiral staircase to the bedroom would be a challenge for the less mobile. SatNav helped find the property, otherwise might be a challenge.
