breakfast cushions on the bed didnt look clean
The reception staff were excellent. The drinks were expensive at the bar - £10 for 3 tea's and a coffee.
coffee & tea in your room for your use great as we arrived at 1am.
comfortable room, pleasant staff, excellent breakfast, convenient location for town our booking had not registered on their system despite my e-mailed confirmation, however it was dealt with efficiently on our arrival;disappointed with the swimming pool which was more akin to a child's paddling pool for one
The day staff were excellent and made us feel very welcome. A lovely modern feel to the hotel and room facilaties were excellent. A very comfortable stay at a good discounted rate. Not enough car parking spaces. Night reception not available to answer for room service, physically went to reception no-one at the desk. Resturant - Not a lot of room in the buffet area.
The staff were excellent. The food was very good, beautifully presented with a high level of cleanliness and comfort. I could not fault it.
Inability to deal with two complaints about the room adequately or to compensate for these
Your Hotel was very friendly, clean and your staff were very attentive. Bar was very busy at times, felt the staffing level at these times were a bit down, causing embarrasment to your staff who were doing their best to support your guests and keep the beer flowing
Very good staff. Central location. Car Park
Friendly staff. Good food and excellent facilities.
Room was reasonable size and had ok views. Restaurant nice and breakfast ok. Poor treatment by reception when we found we had left some clothing behind. Difficulty in extracting car from over-crowded car park. Room, particularly bathroom, in need of revamp.
Central location Car parking
Free parking even though the car park was fairly small so there could be a problem at night.. The breakfast was fresh for a cooked buffet although limited to only one choice of eggs - fried. No nibblies (olives/peanuts etc) at the bar to accompany our wine although the bar girl did offer to go and ask the chef. The corridors were very creaky so we could hear all late night and early morning people.
Its location for exploring Winchester is perfect. It is not the easiest place to find, we got it on the second time round the one way circuit! The place is warm and welcoming. There was a hint of shabiness about the place; the counterpaine was stained, the wallpaper in our room peeling in one corner, the shower hose only partially secured to the wall, basin hot tap dripping...
The garden was lovely, the room very comfortable and the staff very friendly. n/a
helpful and friendly staff nothing
Good location Quite basic rooms
I liked teh friendly staff whow ere always willing to help plus particularly the on site parking which saved significant amount of parking. The lounge area was exteremly hot and stuffy in the early evening which made it an unpleasant place to sit.
central location to explore Winchester nice layout and friendly Room was a bit chilly Car park was crazy
location difficulty parking
Spacious lobby, very professional and friendly staff, modern and clean hotel
lovely clean hotel, big open public spaces
Reception and bath room
the big bed and mirrors the lifts were a little suspect
Very new, very contempory, staff friendly and efficient. Breakfast very expensive at £15 and not worth it.
Generally unimpressed... room wasn't cleaned properly staff were no on the ball,. Despite booking a late breakfast (which made school dinners look good) and late check out we were woken by chamber maid coming in our room at 8.45am. Duty manager refunded cost of breakfasts off our bill but we still wouldnt stay there again!
It was a very plesant stay The price and value of your meals in the Resturant ,I think for the prices you change and the amount of food you get is not good enough. My husband and myself was only there for one night and actually did not intend eating in the hotel, But not knowing the area made it difficult to find anywhere to eat so decided to Treat ourselves and eat in the hotel only to find that they served the tinyest meals that we had ever seen. We feel when poeple have been traveling all day and need a dicant evening meal to get some thing so small is disgusting. It really put us off staying there again .We don't mind what we pay when we go away has this was a treat for our aniversary but we were both quite upset at this and felt it spoilt our stay.
The room was spotless and in good decorative order. The facilities were first class and included bottles of water in the fridge.
Wonderful convenient location. private parking.
Room was beautiful
Location Check in was 4pm which is very late.
relaxed ambience of hotel
Easy check in and check out. Staff very helpful and polite. Perfect location for all shopping and main attractions.
Relaxed atmosphere. Excellen position of the hotel facing winchester cathedral. Carpet in the room was threadbare in places
Friendly Staff Bed was too small
Location of hotel People smoking outside the front doors. They stood so the doors were kept open and let both the cold and the smell of their smoke in
The staff were excellent, restaurent food very good. The parking should be free!!
Staff were very attentive but not overbearing. Beautiful room.
Ideal upmarket setting to do business Some relatively old style rooms
I thought the whole hotel was fabulous and the room that I stayed in was top class and very luxurious.
Setting was lovely. Room was a good size. Staff were very efficient Given the hotel layout, I would have expected more advance special needs information
a wounderful place to stay 'excellent
beautiful grounds and amazing rooms and bath. very luxurious and accordingly high priced. we were upgraded to a very large suite and it was the largest hotel room (and bath) I ever seen.
Locaton, service, wine and great room service menu. That we only got to stay for one night and hadn't booked to stay longer!
Attentive staff, nice welcome, excellent organisation of a wedding reception, good food, lovely large quiet room (Poplar), lovely common rooms and magnificent view. Lighting in room (Poplar) not well planned. Alcoholic drinks expensive.
Pleased that they had a separate room for diners in couples, and another for larger - and noisier - parties on a Saturday evening noit long before Christmas. Great bathrooms, lovely sitting room, pleasant bar
beautiful grounds. Roaring log fire in reception. We felt the evening meal was over priced.
Front of House Staff are professional and friendly. The bathroom was not to my standard. There was a used shower gel container remaining on the shower fitment indicating that the shower and bath are not regularly included in the routine cleaning. This is poor practise and I consider unacceptable. I was disappointed that this was the case.
The Hotel and grounds were beautifully kept and the staff very polite and helpful. We really enjoyed the leisure centre and swimming pool. We had no hot water in our room due to a boiler fault but the staff made sure we could shower elsewhere it was inconvenient though. I was also dissappointed that for a four star hotel there were no table cloths on the dining tables for dinner it made it feel more like a pub.
We booked room only at a very reasonable price - only marginally more than a Travelodge. Hotel was very good for the money. The facilities were very good and staff helpful. We did not take breakfast as this was rather expensive at £25 for two people. Wifi was not free.
the staff were very helpfull and as i was late for dinner they fitted me in and with no complaint thank them very much
Swimming pool, sauna, HB inclusive, room facilities. No free internet access
Not what we expected. Barcelo name suggests an upmaket place but it was just average, breakfast was good though. Cramped room, black mould in the tiling in bathroom.
We only stayed for one night as we were going to a local wedding. Good transport to location provided by minicabs to church and home that evening. I did not like the fact that the curtains did not keep out the light in the morning as they were not wide enough. Other friends mentioned this also.
Reasonable cost and good service
The bar felt welcoming, more personal than usual hotel bars.
Food available late - well I was late and therefore it was limited but to 11pm and then a few things after - sandwiches mainly. As the Anvil Concert Hall, where I was going is next to the shopping arcade I feel they think you have food but not so because the concerts do not begin until 745 and this was ended at 1030pm. By the time I reached the hotel some miles out, it was after 11pm. I was lucky in that I got a double room on booking because I was a late booker, also this was at a much lower rate that normal. Some of the things on the room service menu could have been offered all the time, I think this as what was available was. as far as cooking, heating, etc. just as simple to prepare. From the map it appears closed to town than it is. Had I stayed normally, the price would have been rather high, considering I did not need to use any of their spa, swimming pool facilities and the fact that, as I came by train and not car, it became more costly due to taxi fares (dearer here than London!). Not the hotel's fault but roadwork meant that it was an even longer journey round and about.
Good hotel staff and service
The room itself was good and spacious, the bed was large and comfortable, and the location of the hotel was only 2 minutes from the relatives we came to visit. Minor points: Room was for two people but hospitality tray items were barely sufficient for one. We both like a bedtime chocolate - one sachet isn't good enough. I know one can ask for more but one shouldn't have to! Also toilet roll holder should be easily reachable from toilet and not where it will get dripped on from handbasin.
staff very friendly bar was very exspensive and no atmosphere at all and the 'superior' room did nothing to warrant its name
Everything was the way it's described. Ideal for my stay Maybe a mini fridge to keep cool drinks/Air conditioning
Room, staff and services
Very good breakfast. Even including Black pudding! Plus even though check in was supposed to be 3pm, was able to check in at 12:45pm - good job as the wedding I was going to was at 2pm!
The room itself. The people are service / customer oriented and have excellent responses to customer queries.
The room The food - The dinner buffet looked like it had been there for hours and the meat of the day - lamb roast looked evn worse. I eat from the menu but not 100%
'Quiet and friendly' really meant what it said. We were there for a difficult hospital appointment, and nothing in our stay made the occasion more difficult. We felt cared for. We only had one pillow each, though extras were delivered speedily when requested.
The hotel position was good enabling guests to walk around the grounds and get some valued fresh air and nature walks. The summer will be especially good for outside interests. The rooms were comfy but small, and more drawer space was needed for a stay longer than 2 days.
The treatments I had in the Spa were the best parts of my stay. However, I did find the staff very friendly and helpful, and the breakfast was great! Unfortunately, I was not impressed with the room service at all - extremely slow (nearly 40 mins to bring a sandwich!), the sandwich had no wholegrain mustard mayo in it (which was on the menu), and the chips I'd ordered to go with them were only half cooked. Also, I found the bed extremely hard, so didn't get much sleep.
good breakfast After check in it was not easy to find our room. No signs! Very unpractical with heavy luggage!
It was very peaceful and quiet! None
The surroundings were beautiful. Staff very friendly. Breakfast was of excellent quality. The sound proofing from the corridor to the room was not too good.
cosy bar lounge and fantastic breakfast
The room was very nice Loud music and noise on first night from rowdy wedding party
design of rooms, location Refurbishment not finished - dangerous to walk over scaffolding bridge (wet) - confusion in the dining room( Saturday night when busy)
Location and quiet Extensive building work is going on, and though it stated "some" building work i wasnt aware we would have to walk on scaffolding and gang planks, also they had a large plasma screen tv in the bar, a satellite dish on the roof but the staff were "not allowed" to put the tv onto anything other than advertising the hotel!
clean well priced hotel We had to wait in the bar for 15mins before a table was free for breakfast because, 'unpredicatbly all the guests turned up for breakfast at breakfast time!'
Very helpfull staff, and excellent evening dinner, also liked the unusual design if the hotel and rooms.
Great location and refreshingly different Although excellent the restaurant is a little pricey.
It was very different, close to Winchester but in the country, much nicer than a Holiday Inn and cheaper. Excellent breakfast, snack menu not so good Room was too hot for comfort
The comfort of a good hotel with good staff who were efficient, friendly and made me feel at ease - I do not normally use hotels but it was the venue for my daughter's wedding reception No
Friendly staff, well laid out hotel and very good facilities. Excellent breakfast. lack of choice at the bar in terms of draught drinks , no cider on tap and only one ale. Not a major issue but would of been nice to have a choice instead of tiny bottles of cider at big bottle prices!
The breakfast was very nice and the decor of the bar area was modern and fitting. There is no gym, you cannot call an exercise bike and some weights at the side of the swimming pool a gym. The treadmillls were not working and looked like they had not been for a while. Also the golf is not at The hotel, this is very misleading. It's a 10 min drive away at a private golf course, which closed at 5pm. We tried to use the driving range but they would not switch the lights on so had to take the clubs back. Overall a very dissapointing stay at Marwell !!!
Hotel staff and manager very friendly and helpful. Menu could be changed daily.
The beds are very comfortable The bar is extreme;y expensive . It cost over £10 for two drinks
The hotel is novel with it's jungle theme, proximity to Marwell Zoo and the surrounding woodland and chalet style accommodation. The room was large and comfortable. The decor was a little tired and the bathroom well-worn. But it was clean.
The staff were friendly and helpful. The decor and cleanliness of the room was acceptable but not exceptional. The standard of food was good but expensive. In summary I would say that we enjoyed our stay but would have expected more for our money
Value for money option, way above standard for others of a similar proce bracket. Excellent breakfast. Friendy staff. Room was clean though a little dusty. The roof eaves ran through our bathroom so showering was a challnge. The only fault is trying to find the hotel. The navigation information provided is incorrect.
Staff extremely pleasant and helpful.
Personable and helpful staff (all). Eclectic ambience of all public rooms in main building. Dinner and breakfast. No children. We stayed in the St Georges annex; very comfortable, but lacking in soundproofing - the us guests who arrived back at 04.00 banging doors and generally making a racket will surely forgive me (after 4 hours' sleep) when I got my own back at 08.00 ... May be a tad over-priced.
Friendly staff, excellent food, brilliant location due to proximity to the Cathederal.
Excellent hotel in the city centre - lively pub atmosphere and great food. Thought the room that was allocated was outstanding and spotlessly clean Car park is difficult given the size of the hotel but the staff worked hard to help us throughout the stay so no real issues
Well located near to the Cathederal and the hotel had parking available. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Probably just that bit too expensive
Excellent city position. We were not offered toast at breakfast.First breakfast no butter or marmalade on table no real coffee served .
Excellent hotel & location. Free parking. Quality restaurant. Whole experience felt unique. Very good staff. Complimentary mini bar.
Very homely and comfortable bar with friendly staff and a real buzz from the crowded bars.
Very comfortable room with nice touches - fresh coffee, milk. Friendly courteous staff, excellent food.
Excellent breakfast, friendly staff The common parts of the hotel were a bit "pubby" and not to the same standard as the room or the food
Friendly and comfortable Light bulbs missing in bathroom
Very friendly, good beer.
Very friendly and clean. No job was a problem. We were amde very welcome. I personally would have liked the pub to be in the centre, however, it was only â£5 for a taxi to the main town centre.
Excellent and attentive staff, very friendly. Noisy heaing system.
Lovely traditional pub with great food and excellent rooms.
The room was great, the shower excellent. Great cooked Breakfast :-)
Exceeded all expectations X
Nice, comfortable room (much better than anything I've had in London). And I liked the food a lot. Chef worked on QE2 for 10 years; it shows. Can't go wrong here.
I enjoyed the whole of my stay at the King Alfred Pub. The rooms were clean and new, the staff were friendly and welcoming, and I was pleasantly surprised by the garden - it was a lovely outdoors area including a kid's playground and was lovely to sit in and relax with a drink or two. No
A great friendly local pub The only criticism is that it was so popular that it was a bit noisy before midnite but it only showed that it was frequented by the locals which was nice to see
Chose this hotel as it had a reasonably priced room for 4. Room spacious, clean and comfortable. Breakfast good and staff helpful.
Friendly welcome and comfortable rooms (which are much better inside that they might appear from the outside!). Food is excellent although this is reflected in the price. Disappointing that no food available after 2pm until the evening session, so hotel guests arriving throughout the day aren't able to get even a sandwich.
I have stayed here several times and have always had a comfortable and quiet night. The rooms are set around a garden with independent access to each. I do normally stay here in autumn/winter, however, when there are no people sitting outside until late. The food is excellent and good value and the staff have always been helpful. It is a country pub and has a beautiful location not far from Winchester.
the location, the food and the young lady who served us on Saturday
The friendly staff were always on hand to help. The room was clean and relaxing.
very comfortable room at a very reasonable price. Fast checkout very convenient. our room was upstairs, there was no lift so we had to carry our luggage up 2 flights of stairs
Very quiet - peaceful bar a few noisy guests at a party. Nothing - all was OK
It is conveniently situated in walking distance from the town and near the business park There was an appreciable gap between the door to the room and the floor. This meant that noise from the corridor was disturbing
location, fitness center is ok old rooms, need refurbishing, balance quality versus price was not ok, to expensive for what you get
Excellent staff, fast check-in. Mistakes during check-out.
A spacious room; good beds; nice bathroom We could have done with a fridge in the room. Breakfast was not included in the room rate and was very expensive to pay for in addition - more than £10 for continental.
Convienient The room was dated and smelt musty. The lady receptionist when we left (checked out) was very rude, continued on the phone to room service although we were stood there for 5 minutes, didn't even acknowledge us!
The room was very clean, the bed was comfortable. The hotel was quiet even though we were on the first floor i expected some noise. It was nice and relaxing. The Receptionist needs to be re trained. The girl we had i could almost understand her english, therefore delaying my checking in process. I found her to be quite ignorant and she rarely answered the phone when ringing from my room. The price of drinks and food in the hotel is very expensive.
no fridge/minibar in room and bed was uncomfortable and cot was unclean
Everything about the hotel was good. The only thing I would say is that the heating seems to be turned up quite high! Nothing.
We were staying there for a wedding, for which the hotel was the perfect venue. Enjoyed everything.
The setting is fantastic and just a stones throw from Basingstoke My room overlooked the beer garden
Lovely hotel, have great view, rooms are clean and comfortable, foods are great. You feel like you are at old times in this hotel. I wish I could only stay more.
convenience, quiet location
Excellent hotel with interesting history and comfortable facilities. The table d'hote evening meal was particularly good (especially as part of a dinner, bed & breakfast package). Understandably, a high priority was given to the wedding party which took most of the facilities and resources. The drink prices, including the wine list, were rather expensive - comparable to top London hotels.
The cleanliness and all the facilities in the room. also the lovely grounds. The staff at breakfast seemed un- organised.
The hotel was in need of some TLC - looked a bit negelected
Nice room, helpful staff, and a very pleasant environment. Drinks were very expensive, as was the room itself - detracting somewhat fromt he place as a wedding venue. Staff at breakfast seemed to not be on the ball - toast arrived as bread which had not been anywhere near a toaster, which struck me as a very bizarre mistake to make.
the relaxing atmosphere. Even though there was a wedding on it did not disturb us at all. It would have been nicer to have had more time to enjoy all that was available.
Lovely Hotel, great room, nice robes, really smart grounds, great service from desk and restaurant. Cannot fault it. Recommend highly
The staff were very friendly and could not do enough for me as I was visiting a sick friend in Basingstoke and they 'lifted my spirits' the atmosphere in general was good. The hotel was exceptionally handy to the railway station and the bus station and of course the shopping centre. The double glazed window was not sealed and the noise from people outside was a bit irritating, my room was over the front entrance. Traffic noise was also noticeable. The room was therefore a bit on the chilly side due to the window not closing properly and the heating did not appear to work. In general the hotel would need to be re-decorated, a lick of paint, just to take that 'worn' look off it. Though the rooms I must say were spotless.
Staff responses to problems.
convenient to all amenities in the town, reception staff friendly we stayed for 3 nights and the room was only cleaned once
The attitude of the staff
Convenience to Basingstoke town centre
bedding old fashioned
Staff very friendly. very convenient for shops and theatre The breakfast. not enough food coming out only appeared in dribs & drabs so had to keep getting up. The scrambled egg was not only cold it tasted like powdered egg.
The location was excellent as was the breakfast. Reception staff and bar staff very friendly Having upgraded the room, I was dissapointed that it was a lower standard than I would have expected, fairly basic, nothing special.
Nothing good to say about this Hotel it was not a memorable experience. I am going to write a letter of complaint. Hotel staff rude, and not welcoming apart from hotel manager. B/f service was poor and tables dirty. Room had no coffee or tea making facilites forcing you to order a drink from the bar. Room was shabby, ie bedroom curtains and shower curtains were falling down. Shower head was full of limescale and had not been maintained for sometime. Bed spreads and blankets were stained.......yuk!. Hair dryer broken. Meals available were poor and standard of food was poor for a resturant of three stars. Room service availability was poor ie phone was not answered. The Hotel was of a shabby standard all round and was extremely difficult to find in terms of Car Parking. Difficult to get answer from Hotel for directions as postcode on Website wrong.
All the staff we met, on reception, bar/restaurant and cleaning staff were all friendly and polite. Also, we came for the weekend to do all our Christmas shopping, so the location, right opposite the Festival Centre, was excellent for our purposes. If there was any criticism it would only be that the bathroom was a bit dated and the grout and fittings etc looked a bit shabby and old. It was very clean though.
