Two weeks in Kauai
Pros: Service Timeliness Location Overall car operation Addressing issues promptly
Cons: Too many upsells Unnerving, almost intimidating inspection of vehicles condition (combined with the upsell pressure, this makes you feel like it is inevitable you will be charged for SOMETHING/ANYTHING, like the agents are really looking for any little speck to charge you). Had to return vehicle for check engine soon light Had to return vehicle for broken door latch

Pros: We had a free shuttle to and from the airport both on arrival and departure. Car was ready when we arrived.
Cons: When we arrived to pick up the car, the rep at the counter gave us this EPIC speech to add "Loss of Use" (if the car is damaged, the renter has pay the rental cost for each day the car is being repaired). After saying "no thank you" several times, they kept pushing and took a big chunk of our time as they wouldn't take "No" for an answer. But we took our chances and opted out of the Loss of Use and instead, used insurance via our credit card company. All was fine in the end. If you have the money and want to be worry free, worthwhile to get Loss of Use.

Pros: Very nice people at the Fox rental car store in Kauai. Very timely and polite pick-up/ drop off service. Thorough review of damages to the car with photos in advance of handover.
Cons: Old car, poorly maintained, (e.g. Windshield wipers didn't work, cockroach trap in car) limited choice of type of car. Car with poor gas mileage. Little info and options for car insurance in advance. e.g. third party liability insurange. Bombarded with all sorts of proposed additional insurance upon arrival.

Car rental agency from hell
Cons: We arrived 8:30pm and told they close at 9. Finally someone showed to pick us up in a best up van. Check in took forever as they had to videotape the car instead of having dents FTC in a database. Felt like I would have to buy them the car if I returned it with any new marks. When I retuned they said I put a chip in the windshield and had to review video to see that I hadn't. How they can video chips in windshield at night in rain is beyond me. Do yourself a favor and go with another rental agency. This is the bush league of car rentals!

Not worth it
Pros: This rental was slightly cheaper than other options.
Cons: Incredibly aggressive upsell on buying their insurance. The car had 70k miles, the key fob didn't work, and the brakes were poor. the service was very slow - it took about an hour to get the car overall including 5 minute transit from airport. Not worth the 5 dollars in savings.

Cons: The car rental was quite simply unavailable. We arrived at 10:45. Fox closed at eleven. They did not answer their phone or have any way for us to reach them from the airport. I believe if a company advertises Airport Rental they should be available when you arrive at the airport. We were very lucky to find a car with another agency.

Horrifyingly awful experience -- Do Not Recommend
Pros: One positive thing -- The drop off experience was easy and fast.
Cons: Bottom line, we ended up paying more for a lower model car than promised in our reservation. They treat the pickup experience as a money grab. Even if you firmly decline all their bogus extra insurance sales tactics, they still find other ways to tack on extra cost to the rental. In our case, it was a car seat extra cost that they claimed was not part of our reservation. But it was. We gave in and ended up paying another hundred or so extra on top of our agreed upon rate in the reservation just to end the battle over it and get the heck out of there. Management was not helpful and very shady. I do not recommend. We had friends that used Hertz and their experience was painless. We will never use this rental company again.

Pros: Car rental was inexpensive. Very junky vehicle... did not start well, was very underpowered, and had a bad smell inside the cabin like something moldy. It got us around the island. Pickup took forever and was right after we flew in on a 12 hour flight. Drop off was better but they don't open until 9am! So you best not have an early morning flight out on your drop off day.

Pros: I've got nothing pleasant to say about them
Cons: I very rarely complain but These guys are NOT honest. The car and service was so bad I took it back and got a Hertz car that was 5x better for almost half the price . I was still charged by fox for 8 days rental.only had the car 16 hrs. I'm disputing the CC charge for 7 day rental but even if I don't get my $700 back it was worth not having to be driving a sub par high mileage car that had been in a major front in accident. They also continue to insist I pay for their insurance after I tell them my USAA policy fully covers me. Fox is a bad way to start out a wonderful vacation in paradise. The Hertz car was so much better even though it had a few cockroaches in it.

Pros: Car smelled like something died in it. They will charge you for any small thing. The people were friendly enough and it was super cheap.

Cons: A few words of warning if you book with Fox. - They are not located at the airport, you'll need to shuttle into town. - They are a smaller operation, so they may not have the car you ordered, and will be forced to upgrade. - They really try and up sell you on everything, especially insurance. This was a time consuming fight, that I would have preferred to avoid as I just wanted to pick up the car. - The car was not as new, or in the condition you'd expect or find at a larger company. - The car was also not as clean as you'd expect. - They do not offer 24 hour drop off! Caution if your flight is late. - The staff member who checked me in was not very well trained. He was disorganized, lost his his pen, misplaced paperwork, didn't seem overly confident with the process or computer system. This added to the time it took to rent the car. Won't use them again. Ever!

Drop off of vehicle was terrible
Pros: We didn't like the service we got when we dropped off the car. The guy insisted we went offroading with our vehicle which was absurd! It was raining and the roads are muddy! We did our best to clean the outside but what can you do when it's raining! Horrible service. Will not rent there again. Very rude man!

Worst rental car I ever had!!!
Cons: Scratches and dents everywhere, 65,000 miles, very old and even older looking, battery was very weak so that we couldn't turn it off during short breaks because it might not have been able to turn it on again. After declining any additional insurance the staff was very very unfriendly.

Pros: Cheap price was good.
Cons: They had high-pressure sales pitches to try to sell me more insurance. Car had little dings all over it. Started my trip off with a bad taste in my mouth. I probably won't use them again.

Pros: The clerk was very friendly, and a good problem solver. Our flight got in early (plus I misunderstood the time of arrival), the van was not ready and needed some brake work done. She gave us a sedan and delivered the van the following day (we were staying about an hour out). It may more sense to get the flight number when scheduling rentals?
Cons: Surprise charge of $100 for an extra driver. Why would it matter who is driving the car as long as everyone is licensed/insured. Sheesh. Better disclosure of hidden costs would be good also.

Very poor communication!
Pros: The rate
Cons: The airport pickup was very slow! The shuttle van looked very old and beaten up! The sale of optional extras was aggressive. WE WERE NOT INFORMED THAT THEY DIDNT OPEN UNTIL 9:00 AM AND WE HAD TO HIRE A TAXI TO RETURN US TO THE AIRPORT! Will return to old favorites (Alamo and Hertz) from now on.

Wouldn't rent there again
Cons: Pick up at the airport was slow. Then the actual rental process was very slow with heavy pressure to purchase rental car insurance for windows, down time during repairs and such. Then, the car wasn't clean, the wipers were poor, and there was a lot of exterior damage. The return was much more efficient, no additional damage was found and return to the airport was timely.

Pros: The best staff! Shawn and Koahe were welcoming, warm, informative, and made me feel happy that I chose Fox. The price was great and I loved my trip. Thank you!

Pros: Absolutely nothing.
Cons: They did not have the car we booked ready and said it would be a three hour wait for it. The only option offered to us was their "premium" convertible Mustang, which had a busted transmission, and a whistling air vent. When we brought that back to exchange for a functioning car, we were told that was the nicest one they had, and that all the mustangs were pretty terrible. So instead we downgraded back to an economy car, which had horribly squealing and dangerous brakes, steering issues, and terrible gas mileage. Upon returning the rental, we informed them of our concerns and requested a refund of the price increase for the "premium" upgrade, to the bill we were initially quoted, since the upgrade was forced, the car offered was unacceptable, and the replacement was back to an economy car and far worse, if not dangerous. They promptly closed our rental and told us it was impossible to refund on a closed ticket, and refused to get a manager involved to address the situation. They showed extremely manipulative and predatory practices, offered an unacceptable experience, and topped it off my informing us that we in fact did receive the best cars they had, and that what we had initially requested would have been even worse. They have not only ignored our concerns and request for a partial refund, but added additional charges to my credit card since. I cannot express enough how little you should trust this branch, and would never recommend renting through them, at any price or quality of car. At this point I would expect a full refund from a reputable company, but have simply requested a reversal of the additional charges incurred, and have still been ignored.

Pros: Clean car, ran well. Great gas mileage. Friendly folks, very helpful and thorough.
Cons: Only one complaint, and it's a big one: the windshield wipers streaked very badly. This is unacceptable for Kauai, where rains are frequent and often torrential. This is why I gave three stars for "overall" and comfort. If the wipers worked flawlessly, i would have given 5 stars across the board.

Cons: The 12v plugs are disabled in all their cheaper rentals which was a problem as we were camping our whole stay. Staff wasn't concerned by this and suggested we upgrade or go to a different agency. We ended up in smaller and less comfortable Mustang for nearly twice what I was expecting to pay in favor of losing more time out of our visit. I had to call for the shuttle as it passed by without stopping the first time too, and initial pickup at the counter was slow. Next time I'll go with another agency and avoid Fox.

Cheap, but did not have the car
Pros: Cheap rate, they said that I could switch the Altima, that they gave to me, on the next few days with any SUV once they have them in stock. But, given that my hotel was on the north shore of the island and the rental place was on the east shore, I declined this offer.
Cons: They did not have any SUVs, and couldn't offer a bigger car. They blamed it on someone extending his reservation.

Cons: counter rep asked if I wanted insurance or would like to decline. I said decline and next thing I know he calls my car insurance company in the mainland to verify I have insurance but since it wasn't a full car insurance package I had to buy their insurance for an extra $30/day. the total bill came out higher than just going with one of the other companies that was a little bit more per day. what a rip off!

Pay the extra and go somewhere else!
Pros: I liked the pleasant shuttle bus drivers.
Cons: The persistent overselling of products (insurance & rental loss), cleanliness of vehicles, maintenance of vehicles (brake noise, steering noise, shuttering), and the consideration of road conditions (beware half the island is being paved so there is an expectation of rock dings). Overall, I paid way too much in the long run and I should have went to somewhere else.

Fox was cheapest, but not necessarily the best
Pros: Friendly staff and a better price than other companies for the week we were there. Car had rubber car mats which was nice because we didn't have to worry about our hiking shoes. Tires were good on the car so we weren't concerned about a flat. Car was clean besides salt build up on the driver's seat and seat belt. The shuttle drivers were friendly and chatty, gave decent advice about things to do in the area, helpful with luggage. Center was not far from the airport and easily accessible for returning the car
Cons: Really pushed selling the extra services (insurance of all sorts in a variety of packages) and made it seem like the island was teeming with criminals and treacherous roads. The seat belt and drivers seat was caked in salt- which I get a small amount, but it was sticky with grime. Our car only came with 1 key- no dongle to lock and unlock it (and they told us not to lose it because it was really expensive, though it seems someone else lost the dongle or it had broken somehow and they failed to replace it). Our car radio didn't work very well, seemed like the antenna was damaged somehow. They fill out damage to the car prior to you taking it, but missed damage on ours so when we returned it the attendant had to call to be sure it wasn't us who cause it (I am happy they verified that I did not damage the car, but it is frustrating when you are waiting for them to do this because they missed it in the first place and you have a flight to catch). When they called to verified, we had no idea what she was doing, she simply said "Just a sec." went behind the building somewhere and started talking on the cell phone. We had no idea what was going on, we thought she was booking another car or talking to a friend or something because she just left us standing there to answer a call. It wasn't until she came back that she told us she was calling about the damage. Kind of made me feel like they were trying to make us pay for something we weren't responsible for because we didn't choose to buy the insurance (we are covered through our credit card company- everyone should check out their coverage they may already have).
