pleasant surroundings, helpful staff no
The hotel was in a really good location, with superb grounds to enjoy. The leisure club was excellent and the staff were very helpful.
used the full use of the hotel ,the swimming pool etc was first class no
We have been going to this hotel for over 25yrs & just love it it is so central for everything, touring shopping golf & walking so close to the historic town of Stirling. New decor slightly on the dark side in dining room.
Beautiful location and friendly staff. Only one small lift. Expect to wait.
Friendly relaxing atmosphere
leisure facilities were put in a famoly room with small double bed, decor needs some updating
They were very accommodating and let us change rooms to get away from the wedding noise. Lots of weddings - and accompanying loud music!
Excellent situation , with magnificent view.
A beautiful place and surroundings.Would definetly recommend to other friends and family to stay here. Only concern was, that the air con was not working correctly
The situation of the hotel. The helpfulness of the staff The food was not particularly impressive.
Staff professional/friendly and location setting is great.
Pleasant atmosphere; comfortable room; friendly helpful staff. No tea or coffee facilities in the room. Room (and bed) clearly intended for a single occupant (only one bed light).
The hotel is good for people using the management centre or the university, it is not a leisure hotel. the rooms are basic but fine. Some areas such as the bathroom would benefit from refurbishment / upgrading. Customer service could be improved.
On the University of Stirling campus, so ideal for meetings with University management and faculty
Very helpful friendly staff. The breakfast menu was excellent. I thought there was going to be a problem when we arrived - 6 rooms had been reserved instead of 3. I appreciate that there was a wedding reception but the bar service at 11pm was slow.
Clearly very handy if attending a conference at the Management Centre, but actually this would still be a great place to stay even if just visiting Stirling or the area for leisure. Food and service all brilliant. a clear commitment to green issues – more than lip service. Not really any bad points. The hot water for a bath in the evening was not quite as warm as I would have liked, though the shower in the morning was a very decent temperature. It could b that I needed to run the hot tap for longer, but that would have run counter to the environmentally friendly ethos of the place.
Peaceful surroundings. Very friendly & helpful staff even though two of my 3three days the hotel was busy with functions I got a good meal in the bar area and quick service. Compared to the rates I usually have to pay in Stirling this was value for money. It may not be in the centre of town but its very easy to get in by public transport if you want a night out and a taxi is not going to break the bank!! Why do hotels have to use "fussy" taps for bath/shower? S.M.C. are no exception and the one in room 214 took all of my strength (I am 6' and 15st) to alter the heat setting. Not great for a family!!
Friendly, helpful staff. Brilliant location with stunning views of countryside and Wallace Monument. First Class!
was at a wedding ideal the hairdryer in room did not work I didn't have one with me
All staff very friendly, hotel very clean, rooms cleaned every day to high standard, good choice at breakfast Only fault was that the double beds were very small so did not have very much room to move ,so did not sleep very well
We felt that the renovation of the Hotel was well done, the Staff were all very pleasant. The room and bathroom were comfortable, clean and well laid out. Our only wish would have been to have a king size bed instead of a double. The room could easily have accommodated the extra size. I had requested a gluten free breakfast, but this was not available.
everything was just fine.
The food was good in the bar. The lobby is a little shabby as are some of the corridors but for the money I paid this is not unreasonable
location room was small. generally looked a bit tired
Location, price. Car park needs better signing, and information on how to get the barrier moved.
Very often a long wait to be served at the bar as it was one of the waiters who kept coming through from the restaurant to serve drinks.
The Golden Lion is perfectly located 5 minutes from the train, and at the heart of Stirling. There was dozens of pubs, restaurants and shops to keep you entertained, the room and bathrooms were clean, and the staff were lovely and had no problems holding my bag until check-in time. I was even able to squeak into a top-floor room with an amazing view over Stirling and of the surrounding hill-side - spectacular! While the exterior and main floor are exquisite and inviting, the hotel rooms left a lot to be desired. The beds were comfortable enough, the bathroom was functional, however it is out-dated and has an off-colour that doesn't come out from years of use. Luckily it was big and spacious - a great break to stretch your legs after a busy day.
Preis in Ordnung No Internet access in the room, no smoking rooms.
Receptionist extremely helpful Very small room, was under the impression that there would be a bath. Evening meal very disappointing; ordered roast which was supposed to come with roast potatoes and was only told there were none left after it had arrived. Gravy very lumpy and meat very chewy. Only one large towel in room.
Location Trying to find the way up a one way street
Peaceful room, Friendly staff, Excellent breakfast.
Comfortable and relaxed. Parking was a bit tough.
swimming pool was clean with helfully staff the breakfast. mine breakfast was cold on all three days and the servise was slow you lucky to get your drink after you finish you breakfast with cold toast also it not cooked to order like it says on the breakfast menu.
The longe bar and playing chess but not the very expensive drinks and it cried out for a log/ burnes fire as not overly warm Not impressed at all. room was cold due to single glazing even with the heating on. the resturant menu is very limited in choice, we saw a some guests eating out, as we did. there was no hotel info in the room?? Breakfast was a little disorganised and felt rushed. we arrived around 8.30 and it is served until 10am. the waitress removed my partners plate before I had finished then hovered as I was on my last mouthful and removed the plate as I was still eating, very poor indeed.
Tired room needed decorating
the location is great and the hotel is interesting because it is an old school.
The comfort of the hotel, its faclities and the staff made this a most enjoyable stay. Unfortunately, my wife was unable to have a spa treatment due to the majority of staff being away on training
Lovely breakfast and bed was very comfortable. Generally very dated, and a bit tired. Only paid £79 so not too expensive wouldn't pay more.
Nice big room Choice at breakfast was poor compared to similarly priced hotels I have stayed at eg no potato scones, hash browns, no apparent veggie option
The location and friendly staff. The rain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Was working so only used the bed and then only for 4 hours No
Freindly staff - nice atmosphere Room could have been a little larger - also unable to open window wide enough to get fresh air.
We liked: the range of facilities; the friendliness of the staff; the convenience of the location; and the comfort of the lodge.
Beautilfully furnished, spacious lodges in secluded setting. Very child-friendly. Relaxing surroundings and great pool. Staff friendly and helpful.
We arrived at the Estate and were immeidately impressed with the surroundings. The lodge was beautiful and well stocked with everything we needed and the staff were friendly and helpful. My children loved the setting and the pool. We stayed at Duchally during the worst snow to hit Scotland in years and we ended up snowed in. Despite this the hotel were excellent and really took care of us all.
We came to stay to watch the junior ryder cup, so unfortunately didnt have time to use ll the facilities in the hote. our lodge was lovely, plenty of room, lovely designed, we ate in the restaurant, food and service excellent
I must point out that my friends and I stayed in one of lodges on the estate which was superb. The hotel itself seemed to be a bit staid and a bit dark. There seemed to be no play area for children - an in-keeping adventure playground area within the estate would be good
the general ambiance, friendlieness, the food, facilities and where it is situated
Luxury from the time I left the car. The hotel looks good and is good. Very impressive entrance and extensive grounds.
We loved the fact that children are very much welcomed into the hotel. The swimming pool and hair salon (staff especially) was fantastic! Only thing which was a little disapointing even with the window open in our room was it was really hot at night while trying to get to sleep, but I think for the few days we stayed we had such lovely weather which was a little unexpected!
The surrounding countryside is beautiful and there is so many activities to participate in. Our bed was very uncomfortable and hot water seemed to come and go!!
the facilties and the food in the brasserie the price of drinks, especially a glass of wine.
Staying with a young family, twin boys age 7. It was great to find so many things to do...most of which were included within the cost of the holiday. No
Rooms neat and modern Charging for use of pool is outrageous, portion size in restaurant is small. Hotel has lost it's charm.
The Victorian Spa The room we were allocated had an adjoining door and althogh it was locked the next room was allocated to a family. It wasn't a very relaxing stay for us as you could hear everything through the door. I don't think it was a good idea to put a family and a couple in rooms like that.
the food was excellent although the "hub" was not value for money there was no presentaion with the food. just the smell of dampness out side the room
Plenty of activities to keep everyone occupied
The food was good in quantity and quality. The reception was non-existent, even after using the designated bell and the designated emergency phone no. The reason for this was that the responsible member of staff was at a meeting. Unacceptable. The immediate surroundings of the hotel wewre well maintained - the grass ahd been cut. Outwith that the grounds were poorly maintained. The scrap metal was something outwith the realms of sculpture. The decor was past its sell by date and the hotel needed some investment. Small niggly things, like a leaking noisy tap, were unacceptable.
excellent service and helpful staff
good location and grounds no one at reception and failed to respond to room service.Apparently issues with the phones
I liked the setting and peaceful atmosphere of the hotel. I did not like the room we were allocated, advertised as graciously comfortable. It was more suitable as a single room. Also had a few 'do's and don'ts which were a bit unacceptable.
Very relaxing No bar
The service was first class nothing was a bother to the staf I would liked to have been able to visit a bar for drinks where I could purchase draught beer
location , fantastic building
Everything was first class - the come and go easy policy is so homely. The staff have time for you, and want to give you of the best in a totally unobtrusive way. The silence is palpable, and for anyone wanting to relax, it is simply perfect. The facilities are so good, they cannot be described - only experienced; if you want peace and quiet, along with good food. Nothing, except that the tap dripped!
This is an excellent example of a country hotel. It is set in a large estate, so guests can enjoy a long entrance drive to the building! The interior and furnishings reflect a lost era, one we can only experience here and similar establishments. Our room was reasonably sized although lacking the massive bath experienced in an earlier visit. The hotel has a 5 course dinner available. The food is excellent. However, the price at £50 per head is steep. When coffee is an extra at £4, it appears that the proprietors are being greedy. As there is nowhere else nearby, especially considering that long entrance drive, what can you expect from a monopoly?
quality of food; peaceful; excellent room; beautiful grounds
Lock on room did not work, staff acted quickly to solve problem Lock did not work, however we were moved to another room
Staff were brilliant, I had to stay extra night due to snow, staff had road closures all printed off for guests. Room clean, I put comfort down to good as I found the bed a bit hard but this may suit other people. breakfast included, great. as above, bed a little hard.
convenience Walls between rooms were paper thin
Desk staff were helpful in finding a restaurant. The breakfast offered a variety of options. I wish there had been a separate sheet on the bed instead of just a duvet. I understand that this is typical of most UK and European hotels.
on the whole, a well run and clean hotel, staff pleasant and location of hotel excellent if you plan to visit surrounding areas.
Staff were welcoming. Process for booking in and out was quick. Everything asked for was provided. On entering the room it was slightly cold. However after an hour it did warm up.
We found the staff very pleasant and helpful. The room was clean and comfortable. The breakfast arrangements were roomy and the food was good.
the location was great for the park and ride in to stirling. the eating inn next door was excellent too.
Nice hotel could have been better Room smelling of smoke complained and nothing was done about it
Excellent staff. I'd like the choice to have a cooked breakfast.
nice traditional hotel. Lovely big breakfast On arrival, the hotel had no note of our booking. Thankfully I had taken a print out of my online booking
The staff were quick to amend the mistake in reservation for dinner. The staff were really friendly and efficient. The toilet in our room was less than clean ideallly needed a deep clean or ripped out and refurbished. The room itself was very dated but fairly comfortable.
Excellent breakfast, bright dining room, very central for Perth Theatre. Bed was poor - lumpy
Handy for workplace
No room service
Very friendly and helpful staff. A nice restful environment.
close to train station/city lady in bar not friendly
It was good value for money Better insulation between the bedrooms could be introduced. I was woken several times during the night due to noise from other rooms
the location of the room was above a noisy generator.
Central location and excellent value for money. All-you-can-eat breakfast. This is a very old building which is rambling in nature and so somewhat difficult to find your way around. My bedroom was clean and comfortable and adequately equiped but could not be described as luxurious.
The location at the foot of the Ochil hills was superb and handy for Stirling city centre. They need to pipe music into the bar area to break the silence.
The food was very well presented and very tasty There was no mirror in the bedroom area and not quite enough light at the bathroom mirror
The venison was out of this world - fantastic! The staff were also fun and friendly - had a super time in the bar! No hair dryers was unusual, however, must be common here as there isn't one at the Holiday Inn either!
Right from the hard working lovely staff to the shower, the whole castle was lovely. The room was in keeping with the surroundings and was very please to see a clean bathroom. The evening meal was well worth the money and would certainly go back again. The floor board were a bit squeaky but that cant be helped so was aware when walking over the floor.
Very attractive place to stay. Clean and comfortable.
Every thing Not disclosing that it was a fourth floor walk up.
fantastic accomodation, fantastic location, best self catering our family has ever stayed in.
The flat was absolutely gorgous with lots of personal touches which made the stay special and would make me recommend it to friends and also return myself. Excellent location and a short stroll to the town centre. The fact that I wasn't staying longer!
the fact that it was on the third floor which meant climbing 63 steps
The accomodation was of very high standard and kept very clean. It was well eqiupped and the nice little extras like the Wii, TV's in the bedrooms and access to the internet. Too many stairs to the Rose Apartment for older or fragile guests.
The location of the apartment. The quality of the room was excellent. The stairs to the room
Appartment pure luxury.dealing with the staff about arrival and depature was above the call of duty The only complaint myself and my brother-in law are of limited mobility and the amount of stairs caused joint problems.
This is the perfect place for a week end stay for 3 or 4 people. A top floor location that isnt suitable for everyone, but the accomodation is 5 star plus.
There was a group of us staying at the Rose Apartment in celebration of a relation's birthday. Everyone had a lovely time here and the accommodation was excellent. The apartment was modern, clean and spacious and we would certainly return. No
very comfortable bed, good food and lovely quiet pool-we had it to ourselves! the rather unattractive extension to the original castle that makes up a large part of the accommodation was a bit of a let down
Beautiful setting and lovely old hotel Room was in n'new wing' and was very small. Bathroom was compact but ok.
Room was very small. Only had single headboard so perhaps was single room made in to double
Staff were excellent first class service. Food was also first class. Overall 11 out of 10 ***** None
location was great with a fabulous view from the top floor restaurant, the surrounding garden was also very nice and located within short driving distance from loch earn, the trossachs national park, famous grouse experience service in restaurant was very slow, food was not as good as hoped from advertisements and room decor and size was more travel lodge than castle. Also lots of noise from corridor and adjoining rooms, there was a large gap between the bottom of our door and the floor!
Excellent Staff, cleanliness. No Pool. Dinner three of the ladies meals/steak/scallops overcooked, roast root veg turned out to be minute pieces of frozen veg. Very poor did not hav dinner on second night.
Reception staff extremely helpful in arranging my breakfast earlier than served, as I had to leave early for business Having to go outside to the pool, that wasn't clear from the description
Fantastic relaxed atmosphere. Meal in the restaurant was superb - butternut squash risotto was out of this world. Room was very small - should have been a single room!
The roof top restaurant and bar were extremely comfortable . Very good service, polite staff and fantastic panoramic views. It would be a place I would consider returning to . Not easy to find within the town!
staff were very pleasant and restaurant was lovely, the roof terrace was lovely too look out off if the weather was nicer. pool and spa were amazing
Room was nice and clean. Location was terrible. Through traffic and lots of large truck deliveries, as well as other noise kept us awake and woke us up early. There was no remote for the room television and front desk could not locate us one and could not show us how to operate.
Near city centre, clean and comfortable one room was extremely hot - window only opened on to courtyard and no air came in.
the relaxing bistro and meal
wev requested an upgrade and were very happy with the room we were given. we weren't happy with the first room we were given as it was very small
The staff was very friendly and helpful. Lovely breakfast and good location for shopping
downstairs was lovely but untill the bedrooms are improved we would not use this hotel
The staff were very friendly & helpful. Good breakfasts, clean comfortable rooms. Would stay again but only if 1st floor rooms available or a lift installed!! The stairs to the rooms were unbeleivably steep & winding, all guests & even staff commented on this!! Even the fitter among us had to stop for breathers. It should be made clear that this hotel is not suitable for elderly people - my mum was with us and the stairs were so bad, she had to use her angina sprays at each floor. Also, the ground floor public areas were nicely refurbished but the stairwells were a bit shabby & dated. The website was a bit misleading, stating free car parking on site - there were only actually 5 very small spaces!!
Nice room and an excellent breakfast, great atmosphere in hotel bar, staff are so friendly. No lift
The best thing about the hotel was the Bistro attached to it - the food was amoungst the best I have every eaten anywhere in the world. Room was small and cramped and the bathroom was old a rickerty.
Very Friendly Staff, and excellent meal, wifi access in reception area allowed me to do a lot of work in evening in a comfortable relaxing environment
Central Helpful staff Shower in bathroom very poor
All good No complaints
Pleasant surroundings and facilities.
the location for shopping trip finding a place to park. the food was very poor
We booked a mini-suite but this turned out to be on the 3rd floor (no lifts) which was unsuitable for 70+ year olds with moving problems but the hotel quickly changed the room to one on the 1st floor which was excellent overlooking the river and Perth bridge - ideal for us.
The view of the River Tay was great. The breakfasts were pretty good as well. All of your staff was very nice and accomodating. You need a bellman or porter. There are many stairs and it is very difficult to carry up your luggage alone. My Mother was with us and she is 76 years old and unable to carry her luggage up several flights of stairs. It was unfair that the ladies at the from desk had to help us get our luggage to our room. The parking situation was terrible as well. I know this is a very old hotel but the parking spaces were very difficult to get into at the side of the hotel and many nights it was already full.
room was fantastic and restaurant (with view of Tay) was lovely-particularly loved our high tea experience car parking a bit of a problem
Friendly staff with great central location. Clean, comfortable and roomy. Excellent breakfasts too.
Due to the hotel being quiet we were offered a choice of two suites which was really nice. We liked the hotel and staff. Only downside was no one around at night to serve us in the bar after one initial drink so we just had to go back to the room (it was only about midnight).
Unfortunately we could only stay one night on this visit, but definitely plan to return and stay longer. The hotel was comfortable and welcoming and we were given the Tay Suite overlooking the river which was a lovely room with an old world charm - which often lacking in hotels today Lack of hot water for bath and showers
The hotel was very easy to find and in a good location with a good place to eat very near by within walking distance.
The hotel was modern and had all the facilities required for a business trip. The breakfast was sufficient. We would have preferred to have been served by somebody at breakfast. Self service was complicated and didn't seem to reduce the number of staff in the dining area.
Toilet and room very good layout. Staff excellent. Matresses too hard.
Staff, facilities and cleanliness No everything was great
Friendliness of the receptionist Lack of on site catering
The barman was happy to serve guests all night if they wished and the staff generally were very chatty. It wasn't your fault, but it was a long walk to the station in the morning thru' driving snow...since there were no taxis or buses!
perfect budget hotel all round.
I was on a business trip, the restaraunt next door was very good. The tv set was of historical value only, useless for watching tv
Friendly staff, breakfast, and restuarant next to the hotel. Children stayed at no extra charge. Very accessable to the motorway Room was very small for the price
~Clean, everything worked, a good shower, large bed, the place was in very good decorative order
Elegantly restored house on quiet green, but just a very short walk from castle and cafes. Room was lovely, and our hostess was very gracious. A number of choices for breakfast. After being in tourist-central for a few days, it was relaxing to stay in a quiet residential area of historic homes.
the luxury of the bedroom and comfort of the lounges with log fires
This hotel was decorated tastefully and to a high standard. We arrived in January when it was freezing outside. There were three open fires burning. The staff were friendly and efficient. The food was excellent (with one exception). The porridge was disappointingly cool, had lumps of formed skin in i and had little or no salt. Not good for an expensive hotel in Scoland. Dogs are allowed in the bedrooms only, so while we were eating, our dog was out in the car despite it being -7degrees C. Surely in the winter they could allow dogs better shelter.
comfort,excellent location,food all first class
arrived on a dark and very wet evening, so the greatest surprise was when I opened the curtains in the morning, the veiw was breathtaking, the river Tay flows through the garden.I liked everything , wish I could have stayed longer than one night.
The Staff were all very friendly & efficient, room overlooking the river was very good value for money as a single traveller.Food was of a good standard .
Hotel and grounds were excellent, Dinner menue was good and the food very good The breakfast was a let down. The cooked food was cold and had been lying in the kitchen for some time, bacon etc hard and uneatable. even the poached egg had been pre cooked! Worst cooked breakfast ever
Stayed in the Riverview rooms with beautiful view of the River Tay only about 30 metres away. Room very spacious, nicely decorated with comfortable bed and lovely en-suite. Meals excellent, beautifully presented, with very extensive wine list. Evening meal and wines however rather expensive.
excellent location, excellent food, great ambiance but we only stayed one night so we did not do any of the nature stuff
Wonderful setting; peace and tranquility; friendly, attentive staff; good food;relaxing atmosphere;well appointed rooms; convenient for A9; Dundee and Perth Perhaps lost some of the elegance of former days; direct booking overpriced; rather restricted menu e.g. no a la carte on a mid week evening; some of the staff need a little more training at table service.
