Pros: Everything was perfect, it's so clean, spacious and comfortable. The shower was hot with toiletries and good water pressure. Tea/coffee & biscuits supplied. The breakfast was really nice. All the staff were very accommodating. It was absolutely lovely here. Everything was perfect. We arrived quite late and the young lady on duty waited to help us locate the accommodation as the postcode does not take you to the address, she even came out in the damp cold evening to wave us down. All staff are very welcoming. Definitely recommend this place.

Pros: Honestly, I really did love everything about this hotel -- it may be my absolute favorite of my 16-day UK trip. Loved the garden area outside our room, the spacious and super comfortable room, the amazing food (you just have to eat at the restaurant here!), and all the amenities. Free parking in a huge parking lot was amazing. WiFi worked great. The price was very reasonable. Would totally stay here again and again if I could!

Pros: The staff were amazing, very friendly and couldn’t have been more helpful. We couldn’t get a taxi to the event we were going to so had to leave the car there but the owner took us to collect in the morning when he heard we had problems. Didn’t eat in the restaurant but it looks lovely and would definitely give go there if I was in the area again. Rooms were lovely and very clean.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Welcoming and friendly staff. I'm not usually a fan of B&B's but this exceeded all expectations and was a very enjoyable staff. The room was compact but extremely comfortable and it had one of the best showers I've ever used in a hotel - great pressure! The staff were really accommodating and attentive. The restaurant / bar area was busy with regular patrons which is always a good sign and the food was lovely - both evening meal and breakfast! I would definitely stay again if in the area.

6.0 Good
Pros: Room was nicely decorated with a big bathroom. comfortable bed
Cons: Breakfast was non existent, apart from a jar of cornflakes and a jar of Weetabix (which were out if date according to the label attached!). There was not even any toast available. Coffee served by cleaning staff, who told us the pub was closed on a Monday, whilst they did a deep clean of the kitchen, hence no chef on duty. When we booked our voucher stated that breakfast was included. Not impressed!

10.0 Excellent
Pros: No breakfast self catering which is what we wanted, bed really comfy didn`t want to get up, great kitchen area with a huge fridge freezer and a massive shower area in what looks like a new modern bathroom. But the best thing was the location, if you are looking for peace and quiet this is for you, for eating out there are several pub/restaurants close by. We were only there for three days and will stay longer next time and there will be a next time.
Cons: Could do with a few more utensils mugs and glasses.

Pros: Everything about it really. It was absolutely perfect for a quick stopover and offered me my own little oasis in a perfect setting instead of my usual travel lodge accommodation. Want to find an excuse to stay there again. The owners are really lovely! Strongly recommend
Cons: I think a bit of a pre-warning on the fact that the dogs aren't allowed upstairs would be beneficial.

7.9 Good
Pros: Clare was superb host and could not do enough for us. The breakfast was excellent and lovely hot water for bath etc. Coffee and tea facilities etc very good. The views were beautiful.
Cons: Clare said she wanted to upgrade the room and this was definitely needed. It was the only thing that let this stay down. There was a ground floor room we were going to have but this changed by arrival. I do not know what the other room is like.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Claire was an amazing host, she tended to us so well and very friendly. At one point we were really hungry so she brought us some munchies to snack. Lovely stay, lovely family :-)

Pros: The view Location Friendly owner.
Cons: Bit remote for WiFi Have to drive carefully on some single track roads
9.6 Excellent
Pros: the breakfast was excellent and options were plentiful. eggs cooked to our liking and were excellent quality. the bed was comfortable and the view from our room was excellent - exactly what we needed for a wedding locally.
Cons: the phone reception is intermittent (I was on Vodafone) due to the remote location but this is to be expected given how rural the B&B is but something to consider if this is really important to you. No fault of the venue of course, I blame Vodafone....

Cons: Nice B&B, friendly. Great breakfast

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Location is great, dinner and breakfast were lovely nice atmosphere. Room was spacious and had everything we needed.

9.0 Excellent
Pros: Very welcoming and professional, allowed us to take our keys early (but could not access room) and they were happy to look after your bags and take them to the room. This helped as we were going a wedding nearby early and not coming back until late. Very good breakfast, nice big room, good size bed and very clear bathroom. If going to one of the nearby wedding venues then a good place to stay. Good size car park.
Cons: Stayed on a Sunday and possible only one or two other guest staying. Hard not to like.

Pros: Everything
Cons: Nothing
6.7 Good
Cons: I paid for a deluxe room with 3 beds, I never got this also I have to wait for payment to be returned as it has been take twice, called and asked the reason and was rudely informed you was checking there was money on my account? It's now been 4 days still pending

Pros: Comfortable room in a character building. The room was moderately furnished with an excellent modern shower. Went during a cold spell and the heating worked well. Tea and coffee making facilities provided as well as an excellent cooked to order breakfast.
Cons: Some minor issues with room 12. Shower has nowhere to put soap and shampoo. Television is very small for the room.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: All of it, the facilities, the venue, the staff all of them From the housekeeping to the GM. They were all very helpful and we really appreciated having our room ready on our early arrival it made getting ready for a wedding we were attending mid-afternoon so much easier and relaxed. Very comfortable ensuite in the Stables and the breakfast was very much enjoyed by us both. Could not fault the venue or staff. Will recommend and return if in the area.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location was good for us since it was near town and close to friends we were visiting. The junior suite was outstanding with plenty of room, nice furniture, comfortable bed and nice big bathroom with tub and separate shower. The breakfast was outstanding and we ate at the restaurant one evening and dinner was also excellent.
Cons: I cannot think of anything which needed to be addressed.

6.3 Good
Pros: The room was abit small because we are both tall and the ceilings and door frames were low. We hit our head going into the bathroom. However it has alot of character and the staff were polite.
Cons: Breakfast was disappointing. The continental choice was limited and the English breakfast was not great.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Spacious
Cons: Had to keep noise down
5.0 Okay
Pros: The food is exceptionally good. We had an evening meal which was very good and the breakfast was very tasty. The room was comfortable but needed a lot of tlc.
Cons: The bathroom was very poor. The sink did not hold water and the shower did not disperse water. There were cracked tiles and the overall look was not very clean, mainly because it needed redecorating and not due we think to bad cleaning.
Mulberry House - Ongar - Building
11
8.7 Excellent (532 reviews)
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Mulberry House in Ongar, you'll be within a 10-minute drive of Kelvedon Hatch and Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker. Free self parking is available onsite.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful hotel and grounds, very quiet, very well maintained, excellent breakfast and very nice staff. All told an excellent place to stay.
Cons: The suite that we stayed in had 2 bathrooms but the quality of the showers left a lot to be desired, in fact one could not call them showers as the water had no pressure and just dribbled. When mentioning this to the staff we were told that these rooms were next to be upgraded to power showers. This was the only downside that we found in what is a beautiful and well run hotel.
7.5 Good
Pros: Comfy bed, Lovely grounds.
Cons: Shower/bath, "thin walls" could hear all the movements of my neighbours.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Friendly staff, comfortable bed.
Cons: I had room 4 in the courtyard to start with but there was no water pressure in the shower so they kindly moved me to a much nicer room in the house that had a nice bathroon with powerful shower.
6.7 Good
Pros: Appearance of the main house, professional greeting upon arrival, and personal accompaniment to my room. Professional greeting upon checkout. Good close parking. Idyllic setting.
Cons: Stable rooms are tiny. The base of my bed was made of other bed parts one of which was a different height to the others, so not a flat bed. ‘Mattress’ was a piece of foam that compressed to almost nothing once weight is applied. Biggest issue: there is NO noise reduction from anywhere. I can understand each word of conversations between people walking past outside. I can hear light switches and power sockets being clicked on and off in the room next door, and their conversations. When the room next door ran a bath / used a water tap - oh, the noise of the water pipes! I didn’t get much sleep during my one night stay. No check of ‘was your stay ok?’ upon checkout. Maybe rooms in the main house are better and quieter. Stable rooms are not good.
7.5 Good
Pros: Cumftable & cosy
Cons: Low water presure
5.8 Okay
Pros: Breakfast was limited to the basics like full English, porridge, toast but no granola, berries or similar. My wife was very disappointed. However, having breakfast in the lovely morning room with lovely views was a real bonus. The staff as a whole were polite prompt and efficient.
Cons: Our very small accommodation was disappointing and inadequate in size being very cramped with very little room to move, the bed dominating the room without a separate chair to sit in. The en-suite had a sliding door which was not correctly secured and flapped freely about when moved, impacting on privacy for those using the toilet or shower and therefore dangerous. The toilet roll holder was loose on the wall and the roll itself came away from the holder continually with only light pressure. The shower was wholly inadequate and unsatisfactory for a refreshing shower in the morning (or evening). Sadly the entrance door was also stiff to open with a visible gap to one side, not good in the winter months. The overall impression the above gave; is of a potentially 5 star hotel with wonderful gardens and superb staff being run as cheaply as possible and certainly on a `shoestring`. The proprietors will need to work harder to meet the expectations of their clientele in these modern times with adequate and fit for use facilities if this hotel is to flourish and gain more stars but our own experience of our allocated accommodation really disappointed us and reminiscent of a rabbit hutch. I will stress that as retired professionals, we are not serial complainers, hair splitters or `nit pickers`; indeed very flexible but Mulberry House should really go back to the drawing board in relation to our valid and requested feedback on our stay take notice and act upon it. Bernard Mullin
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The food was excellent.
Cons: The TV in the room had no remote, so was stuck on BBC1 all night. The shower in the bath was only a trickle.
7.5 Good
Pros: have stayed there several times before so knew what to expect. It is of course some way from Chelmsford - more like Ongar. Handsome house and very nice grounds.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I had a problem with the neighbouring couple. They went at it like a pair of rabbits from 7pm and I finally gave up at 8.30pm and went to reception to request a room change. I could literally hear everything they were doing and felt like knocking on the door to offer assistance. It all got too much when she told him to spank her and all I could hear was the sound of a slapped backside with various accompanying comments of “oh yes”, “harder” and “right there!” When I went to reception to explain, I was moved immediately and given a room upgrade which was a well received gesture.
Cons: The courtyard properties are quite close together and it sounded like a steam train pulling into the station at various points due to the couples amorous adventures next door.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Gorgeous grounds and staff were smashing
Cons: Rooms in the annex are a tad dated

9.2 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was excellent and the room very comfortable with a good shower.
Cons: Mentioning the car park at the rear at check-in would have been helpful.
7.5 Good
Pros: Breakfast was nice.
Cons: As I was leaving, there was someone ahead of me but I think he was waiting for payment to go through. Then the female staff said to me ‘Yes!’, so I said I was checking out. She snatched the key from me and got on with her business. I then said a very shy thank you, goodbye and left. I hope the property owners invest in training front line staff. This is an area that flies the flag of the business. (If she was the same person who was serving breakfast, she was better in that area, maybe that’s where her strength is.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Spacious clean room, private parking, location just a minite away from the station.
Cons: It is an old builing so it is a bit noicy
8.3 Excellent

Cons: We paid extra for the 'executive' room, which had a tiny four poster bed, with the most uncomfortable mattress we've ever slept on. The room wasn't anything like the lovely pictures on the website, it was old and worn, there was a stench of damp from the knackered bathroom, broken slabs which could not be cleaned properly. Our room was on the main road so after having limited sleep due to the mattress, we then had an early rise with the road noise. The breakfast was the size of a toddlers meal and not the best quality. We stayed there over a week ago and we're still awaiting the manager to call back to discuss our complaint, I would have much preferred to resolve this matter amicably rather than having to go down the route of leaving a bad review.
7.9 Good
Pros: The location and grounds were great. Free parking too. We did get some balloons in the room after mentioning we were celebrating a birthday.
Cons: Due to a wedding, we were not in the main building except put in the separate annex adjacent to the manor. The room felt a little dated and forgotten about. It was not in line with the rest of the building which was kept to a great standard despite its age. I felt like we should have got a bit more after spending what we did on the room.
4.2 Okay
Pros: The building from the outside look lovely. They had lacrosse free milk.
Cons: The staff were miserable, beds super uncomfortable and worn out. My bed looked like a bath tub. Room ceiling was way to low and next to a noisy road. I could hear every thing people were saying as they walked past. The hotel is in desperate need of a refurb and structural work. Loads of hidden costs. Breakfast was a joke and expensive.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: There were 16 of us staying for a wedding nearby. We had a big family dinner on the Friday night in the restaurant and the staff could not have been more helpful and accommodating. Delicious food at dinner and at breakfast. Nicki the general manager and her girls have been wonderful Thank you.
6.3 Good
Pros: It had nice grounds.
Cons: The staff was not friendly or helpful. The room overlooked some very smelly vents that caused fried food smell to come into room.
5.0 Okay
Pros: The general hotel was pleasing to be in
Cons: Our room was up 2 sets of stairs, the second set being very steep with roof angles that my husband banged his head on. The room entrance had angled ceiling, again to bang your head on. The room was pleasant but bed was a double & the room was overall small. No a/c.
4.2 Okay
Pros: The treatment
Cons: We really didn’t enjoy our stay, was advised at booking we could book at treatments on the day of stay However was then told closer to the time only because I thought I’d double check that this wasn’t possible and only then allocated 20 minutes each due to availability. We then decided to cancel one of the treatments due to disappointment. The door for the toliet in our room didn’t shut properly and in the females changing rooms the showers were dirty and filled with hair. This was meant to be a romantic night away for a special occasion and really wasn’t.
7.1 Good
Pros: Room was nicely decorated and good toiletries (Elemis); restaurant food was good (very large portions) and wine at the right price.
Cons: Room was incredibly hot. I’d booked a twin room but it was a super king bed; staff offered to split it but it was quite late at night and sleep was calling. £180 for the room (breakfast not included) I thought was a bit steep....

7.1 Good
Pros: The location was great as we were going to a wedding at Crondon Park Golf Club which was close by. Evening service at the bar was very friendly as was the girl on check-out when we departed. - thank you
Cons: Check-in we arrived at 1.10 pm late for the wedding and very stressed as we been stuck in traffic on the M 25 and were told we could not have our rooms until 2 pm - a bit unreasonable I thought. However we were allowed to get changed in the Spa changing room which was very hot and stored our belongings in lockers there. Breakfast was dreadful - Greenwoods Hotel you need to get a better breakfast chef!
2.5 Mediocre
Pros: Nice rooms
Cons: Ruined by being informed on the morning we left our planned visit to use the spa for our anniversary wasn’t allowed as you can only use the spa in the arrival day and not when you check out as we had planned we was rudely in formed by the receptionist that we could use the spa for an additional 60 pounds !!! Even though we had spent over 300 pounds on our overnight visit !! Totally ruined our trip

Pros: Stayed there to go to a function near by. Plenty of parking, very small rooms, but perfect for staying the night.
Cons: It’s in the Essex country side, so phone signal not available on some net works, but there is free WiFi so it’s easy to communicate with friends.
4.2 Okay
Pros: Breakfast was good. Staff friendly.
Cons: Smelly pillows, stained towels, no wardrobes, uncomfortable beds, bathroom floor awash each time a shower taken, nowhere to put anything down, almost no furniture, one tiny unreachable high window.
7.1 Good
Pros: A comfortable stay, rooms a little sparse - a table/dressing table would have been nice. We had an evening meal in the pub and this was excellent value - plenty of food and well cooked and presented. We also had the continental breakfast which was also good with enough choice.
Cons: Lack of places to put our clothes - only able to hang clothes on hangers on hooks on the wall. We were only there one night but it would have been nice to be able to take our clothes out of the case. Would also have been nice to have the use of a hair drier.

9.0 Excellent
Pros: the breakfast was really good. So much to choose from and the staff were lovely. Even though I was on my own, I felt very comfortable and they were very helpful and friendly. The room was fine. It wasn't huge but everything was there and certainly enough space for everything. The bar area was nice to sit in before I checked in and nice and cosy to have a drink. the car park had enough space which was great
Cons: It would have been good to have a lift to the second floor but it wasn't a major issue and the staff were available to help with luggage.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The staff here are lovely. We had dinner and despite a two events going on elsewhere in the hotel, service was excellent and food great.
Cons: If I have to say anything negative it is that the shower doesn’t have much power, but you could always have a bath.

Pros: Nice hotel, fantastic breakfast and accessible location. But what made my stay was the lady at the check-in desk-Isabella. Me and my friends and family were staying over the hotel for my sister's wedding. She went over and beyond and totally exceeded my expectations with her customer service! A total gem :) not to mention the smooth check in & check out process.

9.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel staff are extremely helpful and polite. They have been very responsive to our requests from outset. Room is big and spacious. The staff are very attentive and alert.
Cons: There was a spider in the room when we checked in. The hotel can do more by giving complementary bottled water every day. It was very inconvenient to have to wait for the water to chill after boiling before we can drink. Other than these, it was a very pleasant stay and the breakfast was awesome!

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Nice as always
5.4 Okay
Pros: Location was handy for a visit to friends
Cons: Too expensive given the standard of accommodation. Room not ready at check in. Cleaning staff sat on the floor of room corridors chatting before they began servicing rooms. Rooms too warm/no air con.
5.4 Okay
Pros: The breakfast was very good. When I reported the missing tv remote the receptionist said she would get it replaced, but told her we would not be needing it as only there one night
Cons: The hotel looked nice, great location, however, once in the room I found rubbish left from the previous occupants in the wardrobe and one drawer, there was no TV remote, heavy dust on lamps above the bed, in the bathroom the grouting in the shower area needed cleaning. On the bed was a small throw across the bed, with a huge yellowy stain on it, which I could only describe as dried bodily fluid. This was very apparent and clearly visible to whomever made up the bed. Plus the glass shelves, in the breakfast room, above the toaster had a heavy layer of dust on them.
7.5 Good
Pros: We stayed at the Best western hotel to go to a wedding, it was a good choice, the staff were really nice.
Cons: The hotel was a little bit far from where we had to go for the wedding.
5.0 Okay
Pros: The hotel is quite pleasant, parking is a breeze, the grounds are well kept with nice outdoor furniture etc. Ideal for a function. Staff on check in were very pleasant and efficient. the staff otherwise, seemed to be a little "inconvenienced" by customers....
Cons: As I said, quite nice, but it is located close by the A12.. that's a very busy road 24 / 7 ...The room lacked Air Con and was too warm to keep the windows closed(the heating was off) ....however, the road is too noisy to keep them open. The room itself felt a bit "cheap & nasty" and was a bit tired and dated.
5.8 Okay
Pros: Nice location lovely grounds
Cons: Ridiculous price £175 for a delux room which was adequate at best. TV didnt work, very small, tired decoration
7.5 Good
Pros: Nice friendly staff and welcome. Good car parking facilities.
Cons: Four poster bed obscured view of TV on one side of the bed.
5.0 Okay
Pros: The position re the reason for My visit to area
Cons: It was tired inside
7.1 Good
Pros: Staff are helpful. Car park is good and nice shower!
Cons: No Wi-Fi in the room!!
5.8 Okay
Pros: The location suited us as we had travelled for a family wedding & the hotel was close to both the motorway & the venue. The staff were pleasent & cheerful.
Cons: The room smelt odd & it was incredibly noisy. There was obviously a party on the Saturday evening & we could hear other guests going back to their rooms into the early hours of the morning. This on it's own wouldn't have been too bad but there were noises from the plumbing & noises from the road too. Unfortunately this didn't make it very restful.

Cons: No plug in sink and room was quite small. No internet but perhaps that can be a good thing.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The character of the hotel and lovely location
5.0 Okay
Pros: Nothing
Cons: Uncomfortable, poor food in the restaurant, overcharged for my evening meal. Still no refund or phone call.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Clean, well appointed, new fittings and bathroom
Cons: A bit noisy in the early morning
5.0 Okay
Pros: See "What I didn't like" below - I was so annoyed that I did not make use of the bar or restaurant on site, as I did not wish to give further custom..
Cons: Unfortuately being forced on arrival to give photo I.D. and a full credit card swipe "for any damages" has put me off ever staying again. Suffice to say I am a professional person travelling alone on business. I am not the sort of person who damages rooms and I was insulted by this attitude and rule on checking in, especially as the account was already paid in full in advance. This was not made apparent before completing the booking and it is fortunate I spotted this on the confirmation email that later arrived, otherwise I would not had photo I.D. with me. I have stayed in considerably better furnished rooms in the past, which adds even more insult to the situation. Had I known in advance of booking I would have selected elsewhere - in my opinion the treatment was in keeping for a group of drunks on a stag weekend!!!!
4.6 Okay
Pros: Lady on reception desk was understanding towards my confusion and tried to be as accomodating as she could be based upon the availability.
Cons: The facilities were very lacking. No hair dryer in the room. A kitchen that was meant to be shared that we were not allowed to use. Asked for some cups/ glasses as didn't have any and bar staff were very reluctant to give us any. The floor was hoovered but not mopped (laminate), so as soon as you stepped out of the shower and walked back through to your room, your feet were filthy again. On booking.com is was not clear what facility was supposed to be listed as shared. Turned out it was a bathroom, between three rooms including ours. Other guests didn't keep it clean, tidy hazard free. Floor was constantly swimming in water and left in a horrible state. At first we were shown to a "large double room" that no word of a lie made me feel claustrophobic. I actually had to ask that the booking was checked. I was assured it was correct, even though I had difficulty getting in the room and closing the door - that's how tight the space was! We were moved into another "large double room" which was slightly better but was a standard size if that. The TV was just a monitor, absolutely tiny. The bed and pillows killed my back, they were as hard as nails - very discomforting. You could hear other people's TVs and music being played until silly o'clock, so the walls were obviously fairly thin. No photos of any of the shared bathroom rooms seem to be advertised on booking.com so I feel as though I was totally missold the booking. To be all the more blunt, I would not stay here again and I feel that a lot of updates need to be made to the booking.com advertisement and more needs to be done in terms of hygiene and customer care.
7.9 Good
Pros: Kim the receptionist, bartender and combination waitress is absolutely outstanding.
5.8 Okay
Cons: Roadworks vehicles in small car park around cars.
7.9 Good
Pros: The staff were really lovely. Dionne on reception was so friendly and helpful. And Ian the security man was brilliant. Thanks so much!
Cons: The rooms are a little outdated and dark! Could do with a freshen up. They also didn’t tell me before I checked in that there was a charge for checking in early which I had requested so that could be made a little clearer.
