After researching our accommodation options we found Tonga had more 'budget' hotels, but were very pleased to find this resort on its own island a quick boat ride from Nukualofa. We went as a family with ages ranging from 5-81 years as a stopover after visiting family in New Zealand. From the moment we arrived we were welcomed with warm smiles and great drinks in a coconut. The owners and staff are very attentive in this relaxed atmosphere resort. The Fales are private, kept clean and well maintained. All your meals are at the resorts restaurant/bar, which uses all local fresh ingredients and features excellent seafood options. The only phone or WiFi access is at the resort office. No roads, TV's /radios or other distractions. The island is eco friendly using solar water heating, and when the generator is off at night you get kerosene laterns to guide you back to your fale after dinner. Hot water for your coffee is served on your doorstep each morning. We took advantage of the supplied snorkeling gear and sea kayaks to keep us busy, otherwise we just did a lot of lounging around in hammocks and beach combing. The waters are calm on the leeward side where our fale was and ideal for our 5 year old to play in. Our highlight was going out on the owners 54ft ketch sail boat to watch a humpback whale with her calf. We stayed with the whales for 3 hours until they became familiar with us and then we were actually allowed into the water to swim near them. An unforgettable experience. We did bring some of our own drinks and snacks onto the island so we would have more variety, and it was nice to have a fridge in the room to keep things fresh and cold. The outdoor bathroom/shower is very private and in a beautiful garden setting. There are lots of geckos around, but not at all bothersome. Overall, this is one of our most favorite places we've been to relax and get away from it all, and hope to revisit this resort again.
