Pros: A little gem! Yoko is the nicest host! Trust the comments - if you want a once in a lifetime experience in a guesthouse in Japan, stay here. The double bedroom was really nice too, plenty of space. Location is perfect - bike rental 1 min from the house and close to main points. I can’t recommend it enough!!!
Cons: Nothing!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: We had such a great stay here! The facilities were nice and comfortable. It was very fun sleeping on futon mattresses on traditional tatami floor for us. The host, Yoko, was amazing and extremely nice and accommodating; she made us feel very much at home. We had such a great time talking with her. This stay will be a very special memory and one of the biggest highlights of our trip
Cons: It was a little bit of a walk from the station, though the location was still nice and in a quiet neighborhood. We were able to walk to all the major sightseeing spots from the guest house so having to walk a little further initially was well worth the location
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I liked everything! Amazing host and nice space!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We had a great time at the guest house. Yoko is a very kind host and helped us a lot during our stay. She even invited us too have a drink with her friends in the evening which was great. Before our departure she warned us of the coming Taifun which helped us tremendously because noone informed us of it before! The guesthouse is very clean and our japanese style room was really spacious. Would definetly recommend, especially for couples! Thanks a lot Yoko!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Thanks Yoko san for her hospitality, my parents and i had an unforgettable stay here. We not only tried the tatami and the traditional japanese house, but also chatted together with her friends, which let us know more about japanese people and life. From this point of view , the experience is far more valued than we paid for the stay.
Cons: none.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Yoko was an incredibly friendly and personable host. Her place is clean and comfortable. Like staying with a good friend, you feel right at home. Her place is really well-located and within walking distance to the subway/train station. Would definitely stay with her again!

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Most amazing experience for our entire trip in Japan The place is magical, the people is incredibly kind. It has been a dream come true
Cons: Our stay was too short, didn’t want to leave
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful retreat in the primeval forest of Nara. Amazing dinners and excellent hospitality.
Cons: A bit more English proficiency would be nice, and a few less bugs who found their way in from the forest.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Really traditional and beautiful
Cons: Staff don’t speak English that well
6.3 Good
Pros: The property is located in a conserved forest, peaceful, secluded, natural, mystical, gloomy; a ghastly place walking around and sleeping during the night. The building is original, a typical old Japanese house, it was an unforgetable experience. The private dining room is great, with relax, quiet forest view, the Kaiseki dinner and breakfast was great and delicious, the room service was excellent (Special thank to Maiko San, a friendly, cordial and smiling person.) The Onsen was great.
Cons: Certain part of the building needs maintenance and refurbishment, however, the place is generally clean enough. The reception was not good at the beginning; no body helped us for the luggage, and upon our earlier arrival at about 3 pm, we were told to go around and return back at 4, (there were nothing around but the forest! and we were tired after the long journey), only under our request and complain, we were allowed to sit in the waiting room and check-in earlier at 3:30 pm, and the service was much improved later.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Can’t say enough about the gorgeous location. The forest was breathtaking. The staff we really nice and helpful, and the kitchen did a fantastic job accommodating my vegan diet. Such a great experience!
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Location was amazing. Room v nice and traditional. Evening meal v extensive and interesting.
Cons: Hand drier in the bathroom
8.8 Excellent
Pros: It’s a charming ryokan in the wonderful forest, with the river running near your window and a perfect location for exploring the parks and shrines by feet. Excellent cuisine. Very welcoming staff. They also organized a wonderful in-room massage for us.
Cons: It’s a bit dated, but that can be said about most of the ryokans.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The friendly shared spaces.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The guesthouse is an old house located few minutes by foot from the Nara park, separated from a busy street by a small garden. We had the room facing the garden/street, there wasn't really much street noise. There's everything one could need in the kitchen, the common room is comfortably and spacious. Everything was clean. Japanese breakfast as well as the Western style one were abundant and excellent.
Cons: The net in the window was broken – so fresh air comes with mosquitoes (but there's an insecticide killer available).
7.5 Good
Pros: It was a bit open, but after all it is an annex
10.0 Excellent
Pros: traditional Japanese house, with a wonderful yard, the host cooked breakfast in front of you, it feels like staying at home and watch your family cooking. nice and kind host, help me to translate the Japanese divination, haha
Cons: everything is good

Hiloki Hostel - Nara - Building
4
9.3 Excellent (333 reviews)
8.0 Excellent
Pros: nice location , nice staff, comfortable, clean, quiet, kitchen for cooking. Fair price.
Cons: thin walls, need to have quiet people around (which was the case of my stay) Room Decoration a little too minimalist. Miss a small reading lamp for instance
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Hiloki the hostel and Hiloki the person are great! Nice little common area to hang out or cook some. Tons of eateries close by. Really liked this place cause it's one of these hostels where it's easy to meet other travelers as well as just relaxing for a while.
Cons: -
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazingly close to nara Park and a very friendly host!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Clean and new renovation
Cons: One floor share one toilet and one bathroom
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great hostel! Hiloki is a great guy! We arrived with some delay, but he waited a bit longer for us to arrive. We very much enjoyed our evening together with him! He is a tourist information center all by himself ;-) And we truly appreciated all his help! He did some phonecalls for us to find the information we needed, which was absolutely great.
Cons: Nothing!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location is 8 mins from Nara Park, and 5 from the train/coach station, so is perfect. The room was so clean and well kept, and the shower/kitchen facilities were great - shampoo/conidtioner/bodywash provided - a full kitchen set with two hobs! This place feels so homey thanks to the most personable and helpful host; Hiloki. He allowed us to leave our bags before and after checkout and check in early - which was a relief and there's free coffee/tea - which we needed after an overnight coach trip from Tokyo. Hiloki also has loads of knowledge of the area and other places if you're travelling around, speaks great English and keeps incredibly helpful maps/pamphlets/restaurant recommendations in the sitting area. On the last night he came out with a TV for the rugby (Japan v Russia) and we sat watching the game with a beer, truly it's just like being in a friends living room at home. The best stay we could have hoped for! I can't stress enough how great this place is/how great Hiloki is. I was bloody sad to leave.
Cons: There was nothing to dislike here at all. This is the best hostel I've stayed at, period.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Whole place was perfectly clean. There was a possibility to wash and dry clothes, we also liked good price, kind host and location, close to Kintetsu station and Nara park.
Cons: For two people, we would welcome two bed sheets, there was just one big bed sheet. The walls were quite thin, but we had silent neighbours in next room, so it was okay.
7.5 Good
Pros: -Location was amazing, a stone's throw from nara JR Station -Bed and pillows were comfortable -the common area was spacious and there's a kitchen to prepare your own meals -hiloki was friendly and helpful
Cons: For the price, the room is a little basic. Just a small bedside table, some hangers and a towel. That said, for a simple traveller, that might be all that you need.

For hotel guests there is bath in Japanese style also free of charge. Staff was very nice and helpful. Location is amazing. Close to lake and Nara park.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Awesome tatami and facilities! And love the fact that it has public bathroom like hot spring hotel! location is also great since it is so close to the main street.
Cons: None
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It is very multi-culture friendly. All the facilities are accessible for the handicapped, and they have prayer room. It was a pleasant surprise and the thoughtfulness touched my heart even though i wasn't one or them :) They have a hot tub in the basement floor! Small, but good enough for free use. The lake just next to the place is very beautiful! Wonderful for a morning walk.
Cons: Room was not very spacious but it was enough for 4 people.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful and big room with tatami mats and sliding paper doors with fantastic view on a lake and the pagoda. You sleep on a futon which is a matress on the tatami mats. Shower/ bath were fine. Wifi was good. Public bath in the basement was nice. It's clean and quiet. Grocerie store in the basement. Excellent location, you can reach most of the temples/ shrines by foot. Staff was helpfull.
Cons: Nothing.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The location and the view from the room were very good. Staff members were very friendly and pleasant. The big bath in the basement was nice.
Cons: The noise from the next room’s shower was so noisy at midnight and it disturbed our sleep.

Pros: Good service here. Wonderful public space in the building. Plus fantastic visitor center downstairs! BTW what is the brand of the shampoo provided ? It fits me soooo much!
Cons: A little too hot in the room during winter because of the air conditioner.... the window may have been locked and cannot open for air exchange...
7.1 Good

Kotonoyado Musashino - Nara - Building
8
9.2 Excellent (340 reviews)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Attentive staff, 11 course evening meal, opportunity to dress up in a kimono, relaxing Japanese bath, toilet and sink in room, very comfy futon bedding. Staff able to accommodate dietary requirements. Lovely location in Nara park.
7.5 Good
Pros: We loved the hotel but felt for the price a private bathroom should have been included.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location is just perfect! The second you step out from the ryokan, you have this hill of deer before you and shops to your left and right. The ryokan is located in the park and is surrounded by trees and countless places to wander off and explore. The room was large, larger than we needed probably, and so relaxing to come back to after walking for the entire day.
Cons: The curfew was 11, which isn't bad at all but worth noting. Nara didn't seem to have much of a night life so this didn't impact us much honestly. By the time we returned to the ryokan though, the onsen was closed so we did miss out on spending time in there which was a shame. I believe it closed at 10 so don't miss out!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: everything
Cons: nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It’s not everyday you can stay in a deer park! The location was brilliant- so nice to be in a gorgeous setting with temples and shrines. It was a nice walk from the train station as well, so no need to take transport if the weather is good. The 12 course dinner was wonderful, but I did appreciate the option for a western style breakfast (I’d had fish and tofu for breakfast for over a week so toast and eggs was a nice change).
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything. The staff. The food. The location to the temples. The decor. It was amazing. Great value. My best stay in Japan thus far. Could not recommend more highly.

7.5 Good
Pros: nice environment, clean and the staff were kind.
Cons: The Japanese style bed is uncomfortable. I stayed in other Japanese style rooms and the mattresses were thicker than those. Could not sleep one more night there, unfortunately.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Nice hosts, they kindly helped us to check in on a late night arrival, and prepared a tasty traditional breakfast the next morning.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Atmosphere is traditional style home and great vegetation breakfast
Cons: Bed mat and pillow
5.4 Okay
Pros: Very close to Nara Park.
Cons: Extremely noisy at all times, with most of the noise being made by the owner herself, from 6 AM to 11 PM. If you're a light sleeper, this place is not for you. Unfriendly, dishonest owner. Overall, poor quality-price ratio.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Close to the deer park. The owner threw a small gathering for ascension day. Great experience!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Location is very good, near all the main attractions, pretty straightforward to get to from train station. Breakfast was cheap and delicious, room was comfy and quiet, the host experienced and english speaking.
Cons: Room is pretty small, if you roll out the futons there is almost no space for anything else.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The owner was a lovely lady who makes a fantastic breakfast! Room was a great traditional Japanese room and the guesthouse is located close to the park where you will take way too many photos of the deer!
Cons: Check in was maybe a bit late (4pm) but this isn't uncommon in Japan. There was luggage storage available.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It was beautiful and peacefull place. I recomend for every one who wants to stay at Nara. An the breakfest is 100% worth the money.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The hospitality of this guest house was extraordinary! The host is very kind, welcoming and she speaks good English, too! Our room was spacious and cosy with a traditional Japanese ambiance. The Japanese breakfast was delicious with an absolute excellent value-to-money! Shared amenities were very good (toilets, bathroom/shower, dining area). The location is very good (very close to the Parc as well as to Railway station and market).

8.3 Excellent
Pros: Centre of town can be reached in a couple of minutes. Very friendly owners (who gave us great ideas for lunch and dinner in the surroundings); old, traditional Japanese house (ex-calligraphy school). Large (and quite beautiful, especially the one downstairs) rooms.
Cons: Really a "youthhostel" feeling, which somehow surprised us. List of rules (incl. switch-off of electricity at 11:00 p.m.!) that you are explicitly and upon arrival made to read, incl. that you are to unmake your bed and bring down sheets and everything upon departure. Besides tea and water, you have to pay extra for anything that you desire (incl. extra towel, bicycle). No jakuta (in-house "kimono") provided. Your room will not be entered during your stay, for the better and the worse of it.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The beautiful home and the lovely helpful hosts.
Cons: Nothing
9.6 Excellent
Pros: I think the location is great since the restaurant around 10 mins and the supermarket around 5 mins. The bus station is pretty close, like 1 min walk. However, everything in Nara close around 9 pm or early, so if you wanna hang out at night, be sure you arrive as early as possible. If you are go with older/inconvenience people, please remember contact house owner at first. There is a room at first floor, but most of them are in second floor (no elevator but stairs)
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The people were really nice and spoke very good English.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location quiet but close, lovely deluxe Japanese room, helpful hosts who give just the right information.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: We were only here for one night, but we were very happy staying here! Copious amounts of tea, a very comfortable common space with light music playing made it so easy to get work done. The building was old, historic, and beautiful. Our hosts were very kind and let us keep our luggage there after checkout.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great atmosphere and hosts well organized. Balance of professional and friendly. Close to many sentoh bath and set away from main tourist area but close enough to walk. Bedroom simple Japanese style. Common area nice and clean bathrooms. Will stay again when in Nara. Thank you guesthouse Naramachi!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location is excellent. Far enough from the urban noise yet close to all we need for the daily convenience. Few minutes by Bus No 1 from JR Nara, when a 24/7 beef bowls is within walking distance. Because I like walking, from Guest House Nara, the beautiful park is also within walking distance when the Culture Center provided a simple lunch, hot coffee and cozy catnap. Not to mention the hospitality of Shunju and Kumiko that makes backpackers feel at home. I will definitely come back to stay on my next visit and share my experience with friends.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is a very lovely and traditional guesthouse near the station. It is very clean and has a nice atmosphere. The owners are very lovely and always helpful. They‘ll give you information about all the showplaces around the area. You feel very welcome. In the living room is a place to eat and there is coffee and tea for free. This traditional guesthouse shows you a bit of the good old Japanese style. Very nice!

Cons: It was all wonderful
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Perfect location. Very clean. Staff were helpful. Very quiet. Bed was comfortable.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: This hotel is only steps away from the main station in Nara, so a taxi or bus trip was a savings for an otherwise fairly pricey hotel. The hot springs were wonderful, the food was great, and our room comfortable and spacious. This is a very Japanese style hotel--you leave your shoes in the lobby. I found the staff very helpful for any questions we had. And Nara is a must-see Japan location!
Cons: There was not much to dislike, but the price! Seems hotels in Japan are pricey, so be prepared.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The Onsen & the location
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was perfect. From the moment you enter you are asked to take your shoes of and walk in the hotel barefoot. We love the experience. The onsen is huge and very nice. The price is very low for the city and you are in front of the train station. Yes you can hear the trains sometimes tm it that did not bothered us at all.
4.2 Okay
Cons: It is near railway stations, so trains are too noisy. If you try to use conditioner - it has the same sound like a train. In spring baths there are too many people.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: WOW! AMAZING PLACE!! It really mirrors the Japanese hospitality. At the reception a person took my suitcase to clean its wheels since the inside of the hotel is "shoes" free. They have lockers for your shoes close to the reception. The rooms are super clean, tidy and comfortable. I loooved the hot springs and also the free Soba soup at night time. Also, the best part of my morning was the buffet breakfast! (worth paying it).
Cons: no complains at all!

Pros: All the bathroom Luxury products ( high end products). Stuff are friendly and welcome. They hot spring is pretty good, however, I can't use it since you have to be naked in the hot spring, you can wear any swimming suit. I would love to be in hot springs, but I cannot since it is a public hot spring, so everyone will see each other. Don't worry, Male and female are in a separate room. Got a free tour to walk around the Nara. The tour lady is so nice and friendly. She gave us all the information and took us wherever we would like to see.
Cons: I cannot be in hot spring with swimming suit. I would love to sit in the hot spring yet, I can't experiencing it as I didn't want to be naked in public bath.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The rooms were great and the staff were soooo friendly. The roof view from the terrace was lovely
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Very comfortable and spacious room with quality toiletries - we were in the triple room with beds and private external bath. Food is excellent and a highly recommended part of the experience. Bonuses from hotel includes welcome tea, deer biscuits and a free photo as memorabilia.
Cons: On a very hot day, the place is a bit far to walk to/from the Kintetsu station. Because of the heat, we did not utilise the private outdoor bath.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were kind and helpful. The room was wonderful, with big tatami mats, a spacious bathroom, big bathtub, fancy toilet, and even a massage chair. I loved the Kaiseki food. The onsen was relaxing and tattoo friendly. They even arranged a free guide for me to tour Nara, and gave me cookies to feed the sacred deer.
Cons: I wish I stayed longer :)
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Great location. Reasonable price.

Cons: The private tub was not very private unless you pulled over a large curtain on the balcony.

Pros: Very old Japanese house so it feels very authentic. Size of the room threw me off at first, but still very comfortable to stay in. Staff were super helpful and it helps that they run a cafe/bar on site so you can grab something to eat and drink. They also have a kitchen you can use and store your food in. WiFi was great and surrounding area too, plenty to eat, see and do. Nara Park is ridiculously close, 10 minute walk.

8.0 Excellent
Pros: Nice bath and tatami room for three was good. I wish we had crammed the 4th member of our family in: the dorm was not very restful with door opening and closing and lots of light and noise.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very warm and cosy, great location, quiet and lovely traditional Japonese house
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Cute little place to stay. Feels very homely. Has a nice bar where you can have a sake tasting. Great staff and good location. Great breakfast.
Cons: You need to pay extra to for everything, towels, breakfast and bikes were not included. Roomrate was cheap though and costs are not excessive. Breakfast is defs worth the 600 yen

Cons: ---

Pros: Loved the PlayStation. A handy kitchen for cooking/heating up food. Room was a good size for a couple. Within walking distance from the station.
Cons: Not much.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Location is great, the staff so nice and helpful. The room and the bathroom are small but cozy, comfortable and clean. We enjoyed our stay there.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The staff were very helpful and friendly. The owner and other staff spoke English.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Clean room with all the relevant amenities. The check in process was easy and it is possible to leave your bags in reception whilst ahead of check-in. In a good location, close to the JR station. I'd say it was worth the money.
Cons: Underneath the bed looked like it had never been hoovered which I learned after something of mine rolled under the bed.. Bed not too comfortable, the mattress dipped which meant I kept rolling off the bed.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The receptionist was extremely friendly. While we were filling in a digital form, the receptionist brought our (heavy) suitcases up the stairs to our room. He even informed us in detail the must see of Nara and restaurants he personally likes. Amazing service. Room was perfect and clean. We had a Japanese style room and we both really loved it. The upper bed is a little hard for me, but the bottom bed was so comfy. Bathroom was clean and new. All those manga at the entrance is amazing
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Good value for money, private room with a private bathroom for that price, is really nice :) The location is quite nice as well, about 15 min walk from the station.
Cons: It's quite old place, with tiny rooms. The staff is not that friendly, but still professional.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Staff were very nice. Helpful with directions, recommendations and let us stow our bags with them after checking out while we went sightseeing. Location a short 5 min walk from JR Station.
Cons: Roll down “blind” that is provided for privacy between toilet and sleeping area is cumbersome.

Cons: Showers that are in the main dining area felt strange.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location, friendly staff, nice space, good breakfast.
Cons: Power sockets.
5.0 Okay
Pros: The room is large
Cons: We ordered B&B but actually no breakfast. We went to the breakfast early in the morning and even in this time the fridge was almost empty. We did not eat in the hostel and ate in the nearest supermarket. All rooms, bath, toilet and lobby on the same open space and every time somebody seats in the lobby. It does not looks like hostel but like dormitory. You do not feel comfortable, differ from other hostels with shared bath.
7.1 Good
Pros: Great location, a variety of drinks is provided. Towels provided and beds made. Lots of information for travelling in a cosy living area.
Cons: The shelf above my pillow fell down and when I notified the staff, they did not seem to care if it hit their guest or bother to find out how it detached and simply said I could either fix it back myself or whatever. (The screws were loose and it was not really an option). It could have been a hazard as the shelf was not light. The sole electric socket was located on the lamp and inconvenient to use.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: the breakfast is good, the location is great, the staff is really accommodating and friendly,I have a great stay here, and soon I definitely come back here
Cons: NothingI
7.5 Good

9.6 Excellent
Pros: This place was so nice and stylish! Very good location, easy to get to a bus and find food. Staff were so amazing and helpful! The breakfast was insane! Best I've had at a hostel; there was a big variety compared to the normal toast and egg. Highly recommend. =)

Cons: No one was at the place, nobody to ask for directions or which room to use, even though the key was left for me - I needed to call (via international) and ask for code to open the door
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Clean, quiet place. Good air conditioning and facilities, nice bedroom with enough space to store luggage.
Cons: It's located a little bit far from the Nara center, you can use a one-day bus ticket to get here. The hot water (for shower) is somehow unstable, mostly cold when I tried to shower, luckily it's summer time :)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly staff, nice room and well equipped kitchen.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: After been few days in a capsule hotel in Tokyo and Kyoto, Nana guest house was simply amazing! The bed was very conftable, clean and the room very silent. I would definitively stay here if I come back!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Travelers are free to use the facilities of the communal kitchen. The location is very convenient to get in and out near the Kintetsu rail station and to shop nearby. When we have problems on our journey owner willing to help travelers. He very politely and guide you to the path of the most near and safe.
Cons: I don't know why the phone is charging too slowly. maybe the electric current or voltage is difference with Malaysia. Last year,I was booked a larger room, but recently traveling date was change , the larger room was fully book. I only can booking a small room, but still very satisfied with the comfort of the room. Thank you very much.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Nice host. Speaks English and other languages. My room was fine. Comfortable. Good price for the guesthouse experience.
Cons: As others have mentioned the bathroom is shared. It was difficult for me to find the guesthouse. I used a GPS app to get there.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Neighbourhood is residential and enjoyable to walk through. Common room/kitchen is pretty and well stocked. Bathrooms are clean.
Cons: My room smelled moldy. I cleaned the air conditioning unit's filter which was very dirty. This helped but did not completely solve the issue.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The host is amazing, knows the best spots in Nara and is super friendly. The best spot to stay during your visit in Nara!

Pros: The location is very good where just located right after the JR Nara station.
Cons: The breakfast doesnt really suit our taste, but it is good with various choices.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Excellent onsen. Staff were very good. Breakfast included Japanese and international options and was satisfying. The room was small and the large double bed was in a nook which meant climbing over each other but I guess we expected a small room.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Right next to the station but one can’t hear a thing. Staff took care of luggage on both day of arrival and till late on day of leaving. Onsen always a pleasure. Facilities to wash and dry clothing. Choice of pillows was excellent. Breakfast was excellent.
