The hotel has been renovated from an old horse changing station, where travelers would have changed horses or spent the night. We like that you can still imagine that past within the hotel; it isn't hidden and it adds charm and character. Everything was clean, the rooms seem to be named after Loire chateaux (we were in the Amboise room, which was beautiful), the staff were absolutely wonderful and very attentive. We had the breakfast buffet, which we thought was very good: ham, choice of cheeses, yogurt, fruit (fresh and dried), croissants and baguette as well as assorted pastries, hard boiled eggs, toast, coffee with warmed milk, juice...all plentiful and delicious. We would happily stay here again; it is a good base for exploring the area with lots of restaurants and shops nearby. Plus it is literally a 5 minute walk to the Azay-le-Rideau chateau, which is not to be missed. We felt welcomed and very comfortable here. Recommended!
charming location, helpful staff
Excellent accompanying map made finding hotel easy. Friendly and helpful service.
Location was excellent for visits to local chateaux; good restaurants in town. Bath only available - a little dangerous to get in and out of; shower is preferred (but not a small shower - in a small shower you either knock of the water supply or cannot showere properly. A small shower is one less than 1 metre x 1 metre)
A marvelous little hotel. Very welcoming by reception. Tea provided on arrival. Very large room. Very modern and clean bathroom. Very good breakfast. More expesive hotels could learn a lot from a place like this.
A delightful hotel situated very close to the river. Hotel staff were very friendly. Room excellent, bathroom had no shower, only bath with shower attachment. Very good rate (off season deal?). Did not sample breakfast which they said was very good. Would have preferred to take a shower than a bath. Thursday is their market day and they set up just outside the hotel, so it was noisy in the morning - not their doing.
The hotel is a rare gem of a place. Stay there if you can get in. Breakfast is wonderful, rooms are as comfortable as they can be, coffee and tea are always available. The atmosphere will revive you like no other place.
quiet, efficient staff good english spoken and nice breakfast no
Friendliness. Breakfast Did not serve dinner. Garden could have been better.
Rooms were very comfortable , staff were very friendly and having an english speaking person was very helpful as our french limited. The tea/coffee facilities downstairs are a brilliant idea and very much needed after long journey.
The bed was extremely comfortable. Lovely high ceilings and lots of light in our room. Not able to get good TV channels.
Food and service was good in the restaurant and prices comparable with other hotels we stayed at. Quiet setting away from, but only a 10 minute walk into town. Bar prices were very high. The rooms smelled musty and needed updating/renovating. There was not enough information in the room about services etc.
Very well situated! A well needed refurbishment is annonced.
Beautiful view of chateau from my bedroom/balcony. Good value fixed price menu
Easy walking distance to the centre of Chinon but quiet location. Near good restaurants. Breakfast good value for money. Decor was a bit tired.
Hotel had no record of our booking on arrival and was fully booked for some parts of our intended stay. Staff managed to accommodate us but we had a day of anxiety !!!
The room and staff The evening meal was of very poor quality
Ease of checking in, relaxed atmosphere and the restaurant was better than expected.. Overall good value for money.
Very quiet, a great view of the Chateau Chinon across the river, food was adequate. Probably doesn't happen very often, but under one of the towels in the bathroom was a large spider, not a scary one, but one with long fragile legs.
The breakfast, the balcony and the location and the swimming pool. restaurant was expensive did not use it.
Close to town centre, but immediate surroundings disappointing. Noise from toilets being used in adjoining rooms along with the noise of guests arriving and leaving the hotel resulted in a sleepless night.
Great location We were charged extra for parking in the hotel car park and were not told until we paid at the end.
The location is fine close to the centre of the charming village of Azay le Rideau. There are some excellent restaurantes to eat at within a short walk and beautiful scenery along the Loire valley a half hour cycle ride away. Hotel staff were friendly and met all our requests promptly. free wi fi a bonus. The rooms are rather small ( though clean ) and we had to ask for facilities to make a hot drink. Rooms at the front of the hotel are pleasant with the balcony but are subject to traffic noise from before 7 am (particularly those irritating mopeds) a problem made worse by the location of the hotel on the main road out of town. Breakfast is 11 euros per person - perhaps to discourage.
It was not so big hotel so there was no elevator. It was hard to bring up heavy luggage to second floor.
The location was excellent. It was within walking distance of the chateau and there were plenty of places to eat dinner. Room had an odor, walls paper thin and we could clearly hear the people in the next room and across the hall. Bed very short.
Centrally located with free parking. A 5 minute walk to the Chateau, cafe's restaurants etc. Good wifi connection and comfortable room. Breakfast was OK but a little overpriced.
Friendly helpful staff and lovely breakfast including some home baked cakes. Our room was pretty small
Convenient location for local sights Aircon not working for some time in my opinion
Convenient location to visit local castles. Sweet little town.Staff helpful, but spoke little English.
It's a perfect hotel to discover castles situated not far from it. English speaking management. Room is rather big.
Good fairly modern hotel on the outskirts of town. Good bathroom. Good restaurant. Good car park.
Very good quality 2 star hotel (only the limited hours of its restaurant stop it being 3 star) refurbished in 2009. We had a 4 berth family room with a double and 2 bunk beds which was very comfortable. The room was perfectly decorated with new carpets and was spotlessly clean. It is a beautiful hotel building, lovely wooden entrance hall and staircase, probably a 4 star hotel in a previous life now brought back to life and refurbished on a smaller scale. We recommend the hotel and would stay again. We paid EUR76 for the 4 berth room. Breakfast EUR9.50. Dinner set menus from EUR22 but plenty of alternatives in town. Receptionists were friendly and helpful. A few downsides: (1) The hotel is a little further out of town than many others. Azay is a very small town but this hotel is off from the main road leading to the town, about 15 minutes walk to the Chateau. If you have a car no probs, and you prob won't beat the price. (2) Strangely the bath didn't have a shower screen so it was necessary to use a spare towel to cover the floor. Others have mentioned the same in other rooms but otherwise the bathroom is perfectly decorated with modern fittings.
The hotel staff was very friendly and went out of their way to see to our needs. When they saw us looking at tourist fliers, they came up and handed us a regional map with Chateaus highlighted. Its location is very central to many of the local attractions The room was basic, but comfortable. Would have liked a shower curtain for the option to take a standing shower but the bathroom facilities were clean and adequate.
Clean, comfortable room, friendly and helpful staff and owner; good location for exploring the chateaux of the Loire valley. Our room was on the 2nd floor and there was no lift, but to be fair it was classified 2 star so couldn't really expect one.
Modern, very friendly and helpful owner and staff. Excellent food combined with very comfortable rooms, excellent secure parking, quiet and yet within walking distance of town and its famous chateau
Great welcome, very clean and modern and reasonable price.
Quiet location No room service.
The chateau is beautiful as are the grounds. The staff were very accommodating The linens were wonderful. Our room was the size of a large broom closet. There was no coffee maker in the room.
Loved the setting. Thought excellent value for money. However, not suitable for those who may not be willing to spend a small fortune on their evening meal as the hotel restaurant is the only place you can have a meal for miles. If, on the other hand you are after a luxurious feat, this is the place! no
The setting was superb and the staff were very friendly. We were given a room within the Chateau itself as I requested, but I did feel it would benifit from an update as it was not as modern as the pictures on the website.
The owner was very pleasant and welcoming. The room we stayed in was very spacious. The pool and grounds were very lovely. The breakfast was wonderful.
A hotel of great character in a good setting. The evening meal was lovely and the breakfast was good. Not much sound proofing between rooms.
I loved this place. Peaceful, charming, clean. The staff were wonderful. Close enough to other villages and chateaus but far enough out to enjoy nature. Very Peaceful. If you prefer to stay in the restaurant was very good. Can't think of one thing I didn't like.
Very quite country location, good welcome and choice of rooms. Big room. Rooms and furnishings are old rather than the implied antique.
I liked the quiet situation and the feeling of peace. The staff were friendly and the room quiet and comfortable. The water pressure was excellent. The food was good and salad and vegetables were included, so healthy. The toilet was very narrow and unventilated.
This was our 3rd visit so we knew what to expect and weren't disappointed, except by the fact that during our stay (Sat/Sun) the restaurant was closed.
Large bedroom. Dark depressing room with tired furnishings. Needs some tlc.
The hotel is an attractive old manor the rooms had been refurbished and were of good size clean comportable breakfast buffet excellent. The resaurant is closed on fris Sat and Sunday we would not have booked if we had known this as we had to drive to town for dinner. If this is important to you check before booking. Also unable to pay by card as his machine was not working elderly man on reception unhelpful and demanded cash when a phone call could have put it rightwe were not only ones with this problem.
The natural setting, the quiet, and the service by he staff We had a difficult time finding it. GPS coordinates would help
The hotel had a lovely garden out the back which would be great if you are travelling with children or wanted to relax with a book under the tree. The staff were quite incompetent and unfriendly. We had specifically requested a double bed when we originally booked and were told that they didn't have any double rooms available so we had to stay in two single beds! They did not even offer to push the beds together to and make it as one double. There wasn't much information on the Loire Valley at the hotel. Only really Chinon. It took quite a bit of time to get to Blois and Chambord. We estimate 1 and a half hours so if you're going just for the weekend we'd suggest staying closer to that area. Also we booked this hotel because it had WIFI but it did not work in our room.
Very beautiful place, excellent hotel for spending some nice days in calm The only thing that was not perfect is the breakfast.
A lovely room - sympathetically restored & appointed
The chateau was stunning, set in amazing grounds. We dined at the restaurant at night, lovely gourmet food, unfortunately we were surrounded by an American tour group, which unfortunately did not help the ambience. Our room was nice, but a lovely large bathroom. Would recommend, was excellent value for money for a chateau in the area, when booking through booking.com.
A most beautiful Chateau set in a wonderful park. The food was superb and the heated swimming was a delight. All very comfortable and I would highly recommend it if you visiting the Loire area.
Beautiful building. Excellent food and hospitable staff. Building not in A1 condition, but still very good.
Everything was superb, the drinks that I ordered at reception on the night we arrived did not however, get delivered to our room as requested. Which was the only dissappointment. Same as above and also I was not able to get a cup of English tea. I suggest Yorkshire tea, if you are interested, strong and tasty and available in Carrefore.
Very clean sheets and Hot water. Great Evening meal The proprietor has a very good business running the hotel as a resturant in the evening and a cafe in the morning. Its very popular and busy and they take great pride in it Breakfast a bit expensive and not extensive enough, but nice enviroment to eat in. I got up late so I may have missed out !
The hotel was cheap The room was extremely shabby with very poor decoration and furniture
The location in a quiet and pleasant square No view from bedroom
breakfast was good but would have preferred cheese/ham or eggs with the rolls as do not like jam/cereals so just had a bread roll and was not worth the price..
Location-Central location in Chinon Wifi worked Ample free car parking Breakfast range and facilties very limited in comparision to other hotels of similar price Room sparsley equiped and furnished
Simple, well placed. Personnel very simpatetic. Cleanning well done, lcd tv. Bedroom cushion uncomfortable, wifi not working in my floor. After requested to the front desk to fix it, answer was that the problem was my computer...so everyday I had to go downstairs and conect to another hotspot in the same hotel, outsode my room. So the problem was not in my computer. So a bit more attention was missing here.
Center of town Lack of Restaurant and bar on Sunday
The service and pleasantness of staff. The availability of good restaurant facilities. There was inadequate space for the storage and hanging of clothes. We had to keep most in our suitcases, taking up floor space. The lighting avialable in the room was poor, though one appreciates the intention to reduce energy use.
good location for the old town breakfast poor value for money, in depressing surroundings. pain au chocolate were like biscuits, limited choice for 8 euros. bedding in room poor, blankets are unsuitable, shower flooded out of the bathroom onto the carpet.
I've stayed at the Lion d'Or three times now. I like that it is very close to the centre of Chinon, it has parking very close by and it is easy to find. The location is excellent. The rooms are basic but reasonably comfortable and not as small as some you find. It is a good stopover hotel for travelling from the Channel ports to the south or on the trip back. For me, it is important that the hotel welcomes pets, we like to take our dogs on holiday.
Not a lot apart from the cleanliness of the room, very impressed with that. Lack of information about facilities ie: tea, coffee in hotel room, available free of charge if we asked for a tray, instead we were charged for every cup of tea, not realising the difference. Staff were very off hand in the first two days, not pleasant at all. second roster had much better staff. Would not return to this hotel.
Great location and very friendly staff. Room was very dated and bathroom was small.
OK, we got a deal on price. But the room was very tiny and the noise from the street was mind boggling starting at 4:30am. Steep stairs added to the fun. But staff was wonderful just wouldn't get the cheap room again.
Location No vegetarian selection on the restaurant menu
lack of air conditioning
Really friendly and help full staff, very clean and nicely decorated
This must be the best positioned hotel in Chinon and the surrounding area. The square with its dining facilities and interesting shops are a huge draw for us whenever we are in the area.
Nice old building friendly service The noise late at night when the adjacent restaurants where packing up there tables and chairs in the square in front of the hotel.
Nice quiet room. Private parking available (useful when you arrive, but there is a free carpark a few minutes walk away). Good central position in town. Restaurant was closed Sunday and Monday eves. Breakfast selection was not very good value for money - there is a cafe 2 minutes down the road which provided what we required for half the price. Hotel states that free wifi is available in all rooms - not accurate! We had to use our laptop in the hotel reception or corridor. Suggest you ask for a suitable room if this is important to you.
A hotel that is OK for travelling trough the Loire. Nice Couple own the Hotel. It depends of your expectations, but for me it was too ordinaire compare to the price.
We were made very welcome immediately, the Hotel was lovely oldy-worldy. My wife loved the decor. Very central, five minutes walk across the bridge over the river to the town centre. Nothing we did not like, would recommend to anybody.
excellent welcome. Nice standard of bedroom and dining room.
Friendly staff, great location in walking distance of Chinon village & fortress & great base to explore Loire Valley.
The hotel was clean, well placed for the town & good value
Great location for visiting Chinon as it is only a short walk into the centre. The staff were very friendly and attentive.
Although the hotel Saint Jacques is across the bridge from Chinon, it is a short, lovely walk across a picturesque bridge to the city centre and feels as though it is part of it. The breakfast was very fresh and well worth the extra cost. Wonderful people, wonderful setting, as well as available parking.
Very convenient location, friendly staff, cosy room -
It was a quiet, clean and friendly hotel, set in a good location to visit the interesting and historical town of Chinon, and within easy access to the beautiful countryside around the River Vienne and Loire Valley.
The staff was very friendly and it was close to the city centre
