Easy free car parking - service efficiently casual Stree noise at night, but then what can one expect in the middle of a university town.
good location was good value but very tired
Value for money. Reception problem due to type of hotel/pub
The staff were very helpful particularly as my daughter was unwell & it was no problem to change rooms so that she could stay with me.The breakfast(continental) was nice & served promptly. I particularly like the toast as it was not 'supermarket' sliced bread. I also liked the Dove shower & handwas that was supplied in the bathroom. Th room we were in was clean & a good size but faced onto the main street which was very noisy until the early hours of the morning. The window was also old & very draughty which made the room very cold despite the radiator being on. I also would have like more pillows but I'm sure this wouldn't have been a problem had I asked.
The staff were extremely friendly, chatty and helpful. I could have more or less anything I liked for breakfast, which was at convenient times. Although the Black Lion is a public house, my room was quiet. The bed was a bit hard.
Friendly helpful staff. Location. Nice warm friendly pub. Ecellent value food. Room was a little tired. Wallpaper peeling in areas and lino in bathroom coming away. Windows a little dirty and being a front room was noisy outside due to sache windows.
The room was clean and comfortable. The bed was especially comfortable and the outlook from the sash window - onto the High Street below - was attractive. I am an early riser so the chiming Town Clock, which started at 6.15am, and repeated every fifteen minutes, was charming. However, if you'd had a late night or had hoped to sleep in in the morning, then the frequent and immediate chimes might have been less welcome! The bathroom facilities, complete with gold-coloured taps, and although looking impressive, were disappointing. The shower gave a mean spray of water which was hardly enough to rinse the soap off , and the basin taps were very difficult to turn off and one tap dripped all night (noisily!)
Convenient to our venue clean, inexpensive, helpful staff excellent breakfast. Very hard bed, terrible pillows
Clean and spacious room. Nice bathroom. Clean and nice towels. Central location next to bus stop. Warm room with adjustable heating. Kitchen looked so unappealing we did not want to eat in the hotel and went elsewhere. Cold tap in bathroom was almost mimpossible to turn off. Bar and restaurant areas were not attractive or appealing.
Second stay at this hotel - due to proximity to university. Stayed at the front of the hotel this time - road noise and cars playing loud music were disturbing until very late. The windows were rattly and drafty and did nothing to exclude the noise. Food was good again, breakfast was a bit disorganised this time - no juice glasses, no condiments, no tea spoons, insufficient sugar, jam cleared away before we got to the toast etc. but quickly remedied and staff and management were charming as before. Every door in corridor squeaks and needs oiling. Huge potential - too little investment, staff do well with what they have.
The room was airy, the bed was comfortable and the bedding was of excellent quality. The room was peaceful and we felt we had benefited from such a relaxed atmosphere. Rarely do we manage such a good night's sleep on the first night away from home! There was a lovely lounge area just off our room and the couple we stayed with and us made the most of the area and spent the evening sitting and talking there, it really felt like we were in our own living room, just not as grand!! We stayed at the hotel with another couple, they paid £127 for their room and we paid £139, there was nothing obviously different to the rooms, infact if anything their's seemed larger. We stayed in room 7,the people staying in the room above us decided to take a bath at 1am and we heard everything!
I was made to feel very comfortable as I was staying on my own for business in the area. Not having been to the hotel before I was made most welcome and everyone was so friendly
The food. The choice and quality of the meals was absolutely excellent. Compliments to the chef. Our room was quite dark.
The quality of the meals and friendliness of staff The beds were too soft
Excellant period hotel with good food (not too much, not too little), helpful staff, free glass of bubbly on arrival! Nothing to dislike
The staff are exceptional. We have stayed here a number of times and have always found it a delight.
Just the relaxing old worldy atmosphere Didn'tike the speed humps on the driveway!
Quiet, good sized rooms. Proper bath towels! Nothing
Location and grounds; easy to find; ample parking; very comfortable
Very comfortable, food excellent and staff friendly.
Very good reception / helpful and friendly staff. Internet worked well in reception. Rooms were very comfortable, well apportioned and bathroom was spacious and modern. Breakfast was very good. Location was great although a bit hard to find.
The hotel is in beautiful surroundings. The staff are very helpful. The breakfast was very good. (i) I normally expect that ensuite facilities, especially at the price I paid, will have a shower - there was a bath without a shower. (ii) My room had a locked wooden door to the next room - this is ok, provided you are not next door to a noisy couple!
The hotel grounds are beautiful as are the surrounding lanes where I walked before breakfast. The room we booked and paid for was a lartge double room. This was poorly furnished without the customary desk/table and chair. In fact the room was sparce and basic. As the television didn't work we were placed in a small double room for the night which was much more nicely decorated although similarly basic. For the price (£94), away from the coast we had anticipated more luxurious accomodation.
