We enjoyed an unbelievable warm atmoshere in an environmet that was full of history. The decoration of the rooms and the whole area gives a strong flavor of Portugese history which we really appreciated. The dinner we had was a perfect example to learn about traditional cusine of this region - we will come back - quite soon - to stay a bit longer and relax.
We liked the countryside location yet convenient for Lamego and motorway access to the Douro valley. The propriertor herself gave us tips on what to see in various places. Our room was a thoughtful convertion of an outbuilding and gave us a sitting area as well as bedroom space on a mezzanine floor. Swimming pool about 100 metres walk from main house. Guests should be aware that the evening meal is 37.5 euros. It is reasonable value for money for a gourmet meal in a special location but the full meal is the only option offered.
Charming staff, wonderful common areas. Large room and bath. Wonderful setting on a large farm Hard to find
Undiscovered gem. The hotel is a true notbleman's century old family room that is still occupied by the owners (couple with 2 children). It is in the middle of a huge farm / family estate (the drive from the gate to the house is > 2km). Impressive property with 3 large and formal sitting rooms and 3 large and formal dining rooms. Large bedrooms in the basement. Decoration possibly too ornate / kitsch for some. The hotel is not on the gps and is hard to find. Would be better if they give the gps information of a nearby loation instead (E.G. gas station), so that they only need to give instruction on how to reach the hotel on the last km.
The hotel is very beautiful designed and decorated, however do not let beauty mislead you. The clerk tried to be very helpful and to compensate us for all the trouble the hotel caused. When we were there - they had 2 weddings in halls situated next to the guest rooms. They allowed loud music to play until after midnight! We were there with 2 small children and it was horrible. It seems that they just do not care about their guests. the room was very smelly (smell like cat pee) and there was a showercup hang on the door).the room have a window and a door that opened to the outdoor dining room - so you couldn't open them as you had no privacy - and that was a major problem as there was no airconditioner in the room!!! I would not recommened this place to anyone.
During our five weeks in Spain and Portugal this amazing quinta was by far the highlight of our hotel experiences on this or any other trip The building itself is furnished with such style and elegance we felt we were staying in a castle. The really fun thing is that many of the decorative items in the lovely rooms are actually for sale. It was like having a totally private, unhurried shopping experience! The English-speaking staff were extremely attentive, welcoming and helpful. We were encouraged to walk around the extensive vineyards and orchards and pick all the fruit we wanted. I cannot say enough good things about this amazing destination. It was totally awesome...we didn't want to leave, and are already talking about returning.
I would recommend anybody in the area to stay at this hotel. This is not 5* Sheraton with plasma TV and state of the art air con but it is 5* character and comfort and friendliness. The food if you stay for dinner is very local and amazing good value and breakfast is as good as you will get anywhere. The building has been restored magnificently and if you are near the Douro it is a must.Although booked for one night did extend the booking to two nights as we were so impressed
It was near the center of the city and it was clean and nice for the price paid.
Air condition one of the staff understood english easy to find Small room No refrigerator Only one of the staff understood english
convenient to river quay and river trips
The Breakfast was very poor with no personnel touch. Beds are very hard. Personnel not very helpful at the Breakfast room and at the reception, they are more interested on watching TV.
Hotel was in need of a make-over and has been somewhat neglected. Pool was brown and not in use, breakfast buffet was average - compared to other hotels in Portugal. Bed and pillows hard and found much better hotels at the same price in Porto.
Staff were polite and friendly and the breakfast was good. Beds were quite comfortable. our room had a wonderful view over the river and surrounding hills. Cleanliness of the car parking area around the front of the hotel could have been better.
Although situated about 20 minutes' walk from the centre of this little town, there was a delightful path alongside the Duoro River, or a slightly shorter walk along the street. Our room gave a superb view over the river to the hills beyond, with terraces of grapevines everywhere. Room was not huge, but clean and perfectly comfortable. Good breakfast. There was a good value dinner menu prominently displayed on the reception desk, which we took to be their in-house offer. Not so - it was from a sister hotel at the very opposite end of town. However, all was not lost, as a hotel right next door did do dinner, and we enjoyed a great meal there instead.
Clean, comfortable room. Good value for the money. Good included breakfast. Excellent restaurant next door. Remodeling currently underway -- pretty noisy.
The location was ideal for guests with a car. Rooms were clean and neat. Staff didn't have much English and couldn't provide advice on reasonably-priced restaurants in the vicinity.
A charming Hotel surounded by vineyard. The original house as been restaured giving the guess a mix of modern confort with a taste of tradition. Our Bedroom was big, well decorated, and very confortable. Bathroom was a very nice surprise very modern with only the finest materials. A final toutch was given by the Occitanne products. The breakfast is served in a large room with an excellent view. The buffet was five stars, we love the natural peaches. We finished with a nespresso coffee.
Very charming and confortable
The fair price. The croissants served at breakfast were delicious. The cleanness of the rooms. The hotel location, next to the river Douro (but not facing it), is very convenient. The noise from the street. The hotel is great for a short stay while on a trip but not for relaxing. Some of the rooms face a very busy street and not even the double glass windows prevented the noise.
My whole stay process handled very professionally; very good value; comfortable & location. No elevator, a minor point for me.
clean, good value for money
Location of hotel The rooms are a bit basic, pipes along the walls in the bathroom
location of hotel close to railway station no internet connection for guests, limited information about location for the tourists, level of english of staff
First evening no warm water
position for going on to other places
Automatic lights in corridor. Cleanliness of room. Everything else was okay. Traffic noise but not too bad.
Friendly hotel staff. Hotel could use some fresh paint and furniture.
In general everything was good, but really nothing special - for to stay one night - ok.
Design of hotel. Service in restaurant
The hotel was very clean welcoming and of a very modern and up to date design. Our room had a beautiful view across to the River Duoro. There is a restaurant where we had dinner, the first night we had a 3 course meal which wasn,t cheap but it was good, the second night we just had an omelette and desesert, which was very reasonable, so you have the choice of what to eat. The breakfast was very good, with a good choice, including fresh home made cakes, and fresh coffee and orange juice. We were situated 15 mins from the nearest town, where you can take a boat trip of train ride to see the beautiful landscape all around. We also visited a nearby Quinta where Port was produced, very interesting. The only minus about the hotel is the side entrance up a steep ramp, which would not be suitable for older or disabled travellers.
The views across the river Douro and the modern hotel room/hotel facilities. The only thing that would be lovely to have is a pool.
The hotel is in a quaint little village and the view is absolutely gorgeous. Staff were incredibly professional at all times. The rooms were not very large, but still quite comfortable. We had booked for 2 nights, decided to stay a 3rd (changing rooms in the process) and all was handled for us (we were out the hotel the whole day). Hint: if you're a smoker, stay in the 1st floor (intermediate). It's the only floor with balconies and the view is not that different from 2nd floor. The ramp for accessing the hotel is quite steep, which might make it unsuitable for disabled people. Carrying luggage might be cumbersome, but hotel staff will help you if asked. Also, would have been nice to have in-room WiFi and a bit more variety in the breakfast buffet.
The bed was very comfortable Breakfast was served 30 minutes later than advertised. Water sports on the river (jet skis) directly in front of the hotel made a dreadful noise all afternoon - almost until sunset & even the double glazing in the room could not exclude the noise. The "dream view" is more imaginary than real!
Its quietness Access is too bad with a long and steep staircase. My room was too small, with only one chair and scarce view to the scenery
The hotel was very modern and great for the price. A nice base for visiting the Duoro Valley.
Contemporary, stylish hotel in an excellent location for visiting the Douro River valley and wine regions. Comfortable room, nice bath and good views, Wifi worked and English is spoken by helpful front desk staff. Parking was convenient and free. Breakfast was good but not outstanding. The steep lane to access the second floor reception area (mentioned by others) is not a problem unless you are a very mature guest with tons of luggage. The house restaurant offers traditional dishes and is not up to the quality standards of the rest of the hotel--we would not eat there again. However, directly across the street, is one of the finest restaurants in the region--Restaurante D.O.C.
The surroundings are stunning, the hotel was particularly easy to find and quiet. Staff are very helpful and friendly. The welcoming glass of port was a nice touch There is nothing to criticize inside the hotel. There is a steep climb to reception and parking space is limited.
The view - magnificent. I was appalled that an otherwise rather decent hotel - new, clean, with a great view, would have the very nasty smell of the kitchen practically coming into the room through a couple of chimneys located right in front of the common balcony! Also, I found it very unpleasant to receive a phone call to the room urging me to check out, one minute past midday, as I was actually leaving the room.
Very good room, bathroom well equipped, and a very good quality breakfast.
gorgeous room, cool detail of having a window from the bathroom to the room and to the perfect douro view. unique view from the bar terrace at night. the swimming pool outside is actually a plastic tank. as usually, the single rooms are the least best ones, yet we pay the same as a couple.
Reception staff very helpful. Breakfast very good. Building light, airy and spacious. Restaurant very disappointing, let down by inefficient service and long waiting for menus, drinks, food.
Great location, easy to find, great views ( from all rooms). All facilities were great. Room was 2nd to none with lovely balcony. Limited parking at front, but we still got a spot quite easy.
I mostly liked the confort of the hotel (room included). The breakfast was fine. The breakfast room should be more sound efficient, any conversation we have over breakfast you can ear it all over the room.
rooms were to hot almost suffocating; breakfast incredible poor; parking for mini cars
When we had minor medical emergency, the staff responded immediately with true concern, which they showed throughout our stay. Pool and turkish bath were heavenly, very clean and well maintained. New carpet fumes in the hallway outside our room detracted from otherwise perfect stay.
Location, View, Confort of the Room, Spa facilities, Silence and Breakfast. - Too dark in the room, - Restaurant for Dinner- food too heavy, lacking smoothness. - Check out- cold and not answering to a complaint I had (water leakeage in the shower room).
The peace and quiet - almost never seeing another guest, even though you were almost full. The food was very good The "background" music was both a poor choice and played far too loud, especially in the restaurant.
The hotel design, the beautiful scenario of the douro hills and the overall tranquility. The untidiness of the room. The layout and in-room glass partitions not allow a desirable level of intimacy/privacy. No particular attention or pampering from hotel staff.
Beautifully designed in a very nice location. Excellent staff; friendly, helpful, efficient. Great breakfast and dining experiences. A highlight of our stay in Portugal.
The hotel has an excellent location and an impressive architecture. The staff is friendly but not professional style. The facilities don't work in an efficient way. The hotel is taciturn and with a lack of life and music. The spa is badly managed and the mechanical equipment often broken. Poor lighting.
Everything perfect for romance. The Villa option is apart from the main building but you have full privacy in return.
The design of the hotel is just gorgeous, and I cannot find the right words to describe the feeling you experience from lying in the bed simply contemplating the most spectacular view over the river and the vineyards... (we got ourselves a Riverview Room, please do the same!). The spa... well, what can I say about the spa...? Is just amazing....!
The place is beautiful with its well cared garden and swimming pool. The breakfast was a cosy and social event. We got a cot and an extra bed for our children free of charge. The room was not specially beautiful. We found the hotel following a bus stop signal and an intuition. There was not any other signal! Not even a proper address.
Nice, spacious, clean room. Very kind staff. And the best breakfast location ever! In the old dining room you feel like a royal.
beautiful house, very friendful atmosphere
Beautiful location just outside of the city center. THe hotel has the feel of an old country estate, with beautiful grounds, swimming pool, and wonderful and helpful staff. Nothing.
what a wonderful place - despite our initial problem finding it - it is an absolute gem. Classed as a rural turism hotel it is set amid lovely grounds. rooms are quirky as befits an old building and it is run by a lovely old couple. Breakfast was first class, freshly pressed grape juice from vines in the garden, fresh figs - again picked from their garden, homemade jam and cake. an absolute gem.
The view and the location are spectacular. We liked the beautifully designed (modern) rooms and furniture and the fact that we could take long walks in the vineyards surrounding the Quinta. The dogs were barking right beneath our window in the middle of the night and something must be wrong with the pipings: whenever somebody was taking a shower it was so noisy it could have been in our room. And: dinner isn't actually worth the money (30 Euros p.p.).
The place is new and clean, smells good. The owners Carlos and Madalena are very special people of the kind you dont see very often. I wish I had more time to stay there at least one more day. Not really, but the road after you leave the highway could be better.
Everything was great - hospitality of the owners, room, landscape, food, wine
Outstanding property in idyllic location (albeit up a bit of a hair-raising track). The views are fantastic as is the high standard of the design and elegance of this house, it's as good as shown in the publicity pictures if not better. Carlos is a great host, always friendly and offers excellent advice on where to visit and eat. Thoroughly enjoyable visit. My only criticism, and this is probably down to the English reserve, is that the dining area consists of one long table (with fantastic views I should add) and the seating is always arranged so that you are ontop of the other guests - fine if you know them or speak their language but not so good if you want a relaxing or romantic meal.
Much more than an over-night stay. Wonderful location and river views. The owner is so helpful and proud to share his home. We are looking forward to a return trip.
The hospitable, yet not overbearing, attention from the Quinta's family-run owners was much appreciated. The atmosphere was elegant and sophisticated, but at the same time a relaxed and laid back approach was recognized and welcomed. The proximity to local towns afforded day trip excursions, and the remoteness of the Quinta allowed for much needed seclusion and quiet down time. While enjoying down time, the Quinta offered a wide array of activities on site to accommodate any age level and wine connoisseur. Not enough can be said of the personable and knowledgeable owners, however. Note: The owner’s farm dog was equally a treat, having left our own family pet at home. No issues.
The views and the rooms, also food was fairly good The approach to the hotel was dangerous you had to travel along a dirt track only just wide enough for the clio I was driving and often it was very steep with shear drop on one side. Would be dangerous to attempt in the dark and hotelier said that we should have booked for dinner 24 hours before which we were not aware and were not going to attempt to leave and return in the dark,
Amazing views. Very welcoming hosts. Lovely home cooked food and great wine. Pool is a little small.
Excellent stay! Fantastic views over the Douro valley, great home made food, wine and porto from own production.
For any one who enjoys Port, as a working Quinta it provides a fabulous insight into the production of Port wine. The place is very well appointed with stunning views and the owners are extremely helpful and friendly The access road is VERY dangerous as it winds its way up the mountain. It is narrow and with lethal drops of many 100's of feet just inches from the vehicle. Very un-nerving for any one with vertigo or who is not 100% sure of their driving abilities
The location is awesome! The road that lead up to the hotel was very narrow and the turns were very tight. They need to update directions to make it easier to find.
An absolutely fabulous setting in vineyards overlooking the duoro. Modern and very well appointed hotel with super friendly, efficient and helpful staff. Great infinity pool again with those great views. Informative wine tasting as part of the experience and very good fixed-menu dining. Only a small point but furniture in guest lounge and dining room not as tasteful as the rest of the hotel.
Location - overlooking the Douro river. It's quiet and gorgeous. Hotel staff are young, helpful and attentive. They sell their own Porto wine. Beatuiful swimming pool. It's a good place to get disconnected.
The personal touch! Filippe (and Karsten!) goes out of his way to make your stay a memorable experience.
All in all a very pleasant experience. Superb ambiance and kitchen and friendly staff. Really nobad points related to the stay. In the quinta shop, do Pego should consider the prices for their products. For instance 20 euro for a lbv (compared to Fonseca 2003 13 euro) is a bit difficult to justify.
Very quiet hotel No internet access, TV set a bit old
The Sunday's buffet lunch in the Hotel is fabulous.
Excellent value for money. Extremely nice staff, difficult to find anywhere else. Very interesting old town with a relaxing atmosphere.
Location and the city. Staff at the gym very nice. Unconfortable beds, rooms are a bit old and lack of decoration, the hotel allows people not installed in the hotel to use the pool, so when we intended to use the poll we had to sit on the flor cause there were no chirs available for hosts...
Good price for a 4 star hotel.
Conveniently situated as a base to explore the Douro valley. Helpful staff and excellent value for money.
The environment The air conditiong was not functioning well!
Room and facilities were superb and memorable. Views were breathtaking and worthy of many photos. Wines were first-rate and the tour of the facility was very interesting. Can even walk among the vines. Glad we stayed there! This is not about the hotel itself but the drive to it on a very harrowing and treacherous road. The road is a switchback and very narrow, only wide enough for one narrow car but is considered two-way. This makes the 15 km. drive to the hotel about an hour! The infrastructure needs to be improved, because the guests are absolutely exhausted (speaking for ourselves) by the time of arrival to the hotel.
Stunning sorrounding, super friendly staff, a real gem. Be aware that you have a 25 minutes ride off the main street in the Douro vineyards. Not negative, just be aware....
Helpful and knowledgeable staff and wonderful setting.
Very poor breakfast (choise)
Kindness Staff and see sight No cold minibar in my room
The Quinta itself is very beautiful, with plenty of spaces to explore and great views over the Douro Valley. Nothing to point. Excellent experience.
The hotel family were very hospitable, the location is good for the Douro region.
This is the best place of stay during our 14-days trip in Portugal. We have never stayed in the 600-years old house, we have never drunk such a tasty port wine made by the owner, and we have never met such hospitable owners. Damien and Louise very good speak French. They can provide you with all necessary information. And what delicious baked pudding and egg desert have been prepared by Louse. This is a calm and quiet place for a rest; there are magnificent views to the river and vineyards. The hotel is well-equipped cozy and comfortable. There are direction signs to the hotel on the road. The best way to come is to turn on the second second sign (from the side of Regua). The parking area is enough for 6 cars. The field for comments above is too small for all my opinion about the hotel
We stayed in 9 hotels in Portugal. This is the most excellent one. The host is genuinely nice, not just being commercial. He has his own cellar making port. We were offered unlimited amount of welcome drinks (home made port). Although we did not had dinner at the hotel, we were offered some soup, dessert, wine and dessert free. The house is nicely decorated in a traditional Portugal style. The location is incredible with a fantastic view of the river. It is like traveling back in time to a quite Portugal village for a very authentic experience. Not near any big city. You have got to drive. No internet - a blessing if you want a real break!
our bedroom window looked out onto a scene of rural tranquility and the duoro river; a place to get away from it. nearby are good-to-great restaurants and an outstanding vineyard and tasting room (quinta do tedo).
Very good countryside hotel in a very nice region with a tremendous view to Douro river. The owners are very kind and are there always to help. The breakfast was served in the kitchen owners and was delicious. If you want to rest, you must choose this countryside hotel because you will only hear the birds in the morning. The hotel have a covered place to park at least 6 cars. Quinta da Azenha is higly recomended!
Owner of the Qunita is welcoming each guest nicely and is very helpful. Nice is as well that breakfast is in the family kitchen on one big table with all hotel guests, thsu you get to know some persons during your trip. Our room was nicely decorated (roses behind the bed on the wall) and had an breathtaking view to the river and the Douro valleys. The most excisting was that the owner invited the guests to produce wine by stepping on the grapes. Driving up to the Quinta is in narrow streets, but at least the way is short, well marked with signs and on the evenings there is enough light.
Lovely place to stay. Really nice rooms and surroundings. Owner's are really nice, friendly and they take good care of you while staying. They also speak nice understantable english.
good welcoming of owners. needs better sign posting from main road. good breakfast great for nature
