Pros: Very friendly and hospitable hosts, environment, silence, fresh air,
Pros: We had the best experience and we were really well looked after - I can’t wait to return! This is my favourite place I have stayed in France.
Pros: The hotel is in a sort of farm-like mansion. The buildings surround a patio where breakfast is served if weather permits. The whole place can be shut with a gate at night, you get a key to open the side door so you can open the gate. You can park within the gated space as well. The place is beautiful, rooms are large. We had the family room, the upstairs with two adjacent rooms and a bathroom and a separate toilet.. The hallway in between the rooms is somewhat open but it is the last floor so I doubt anybody will be ever there. Breakfast is nice. You make the choice of a warm beverage the night before and set a time and everything is set ready on the table. The breakfast included a very good fruit salad, you had the choice to add yogurt. Then there was one type of bread and several choices of jams spreads. Only sweet things, no savory choices. Communication is easy, the host had several suggestions for restaurants nearby.
Cons: The hosts seemed to be overly worried about keeping the place clean and tidy, which makes the place less suitable for families with small kids. The room of the kids had large bolts sticking out of the floor, we all hurt our feet a couple of times on it.
Pros: My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The location worked well for visiting Chinon and other area sites. Our room was lovely and large. We enjoyed breakfast each morning with a variety of French pastries provided. Our hosts were very helpful with directions, restaurant reservations, and checking to be sure we knew of local places of interest. They even waited up late our first evening to be sure we returned safely. Parking was readily available. Michelle and Jean-Jaques were the perfect hosts.
Pros: Hosts, location, garden area, bedroom & bathroom.
Cons: Upper level bathroom does not have a useable shower. The shower is handheld and there is no shower curtain.
Pros: Property is full of character. Friendly owners. Breakfast was super.
Cons: It would be helpful if there was a signboard at point where one needs to turn off main road into hamlet where property is located. It is not the easiest place to find.
Pros: Superb accommodation with excellent hosts.
Pros: Spacious, quiet, sunny gite in a beautiful old building which also contains four chambres d'hote and the owners' apartment. Delightful shared garden where we could relax, sip wine, eat, and occasionally chat with other guests. Charming and welcoming hosts; excellent kitchen; parking. Very quiet location with a semi-rural feel; we could walk through the woods to the banks of the nearby River Vienne. Well located for visiting many Loire Valley towns and villages, gardens and chateaux. Lovely countryside. Large Carrefour supermarket 3k away at Avoine. With goodwill and occasional use of Google Translate, communication with our hosts was fine.
Cons: From our viewpoint the only downside was that the nearest baker was around 2k away, so we could not stroll out for baguette and croissants in the morning.
Offering a flowered garden, La Balastière is located in Beaumont-en-Véron. It offers guest rooms and a studio. A WiFi hotspot is available in common areas. Each accommodation type features a fan, a wardrobe and a private bathroom with a bath or shower. Guests are invited to enjoy breakfast every morning at La Balastière and have access to a shared kitchen. Featuring sloped ceilings and wooden beams, the studio has a kitchenette with a microwave, a fridge and a coffee machine. This property is 29 km from Azay-le-Rideau and its château. The Château d’Ussé is a 21-minute drive away.
Pros: Perfect location to exploire the Loire valley, and the area of Chinon. Good breakfast.
Pros: Great hospitality, beautiful home and garden, well positioned for visiting this part of the Loire valley
Cons: Breakfast is too ... sweet
Pros: Rustic charm, natural gardens, lovely host, use of the kitchen was beneficial.
Pros: The homemade jam :)
Cons: Mind the cat if you are allergic!
9.0 Excellent (310 reviews)
See hotel page There's a unique place on the Maine-et-Loire map: Le Domaine de Mestr, The Originals Relais. This hotel at the edge of Fontevraud lAbbaye village blends ancient and more recent history, with the rich Abbey and a family associated with the estate since 1791 both featuring in its past. Marie Amlie de Courcy and her family welcome guests to this charming hotel full of memories with 16 comfortable bedrooms and delicious home-made cuisine.
Pros: excellent place for those who like tranquility, a nice garden, and good food.
Pros: Beautiful setting and a lovely old farmhouse. Good restaurant
Cons: No tv and no hairdryer in the room
Pros: Substantial period property with elegantly furnished rooms. Good supper served on the terrace and superb house red
Pros: Our spacious room in the 12th Century part of the domain was wonderfully characterful and very comfortable with an enormous bed, huge bathroom and sweet bathrobes with hearts embroidered on them. The buffet evening meal was well priced at 23 euros pp considering the huge choice of starters and puddings...which you helped yourself to and could eat as much of as you liked. There appeared to be no choice with the main course though ( which was chicken) The meal was delicious but not great if you're vegetarian.
Cons: Our lovely room was not in the main building and required negotiating some uneven outdoor timber steps and floors, so would not suit people with mobility impairments. It's not clear that the evening meal should be booked in advance. We were lucky they had room for us.
Pros: Everything was excellent and all the staff very nice. We loved the soap boutique and the tranquillity of it all.
Cons: It was sad that we missed out on two evening meals as the website said there was no dinner on Monday and Tuesday evenings when we were staying so we booked elsewhere. We were kindly offered to book dinner on arrival but we felt it not right to cancel our bookings at the other restaurant. It was a shame for us and for the hotel to miss out on our custom so perhaps the website needs checking ?
Pros: Peaceful, charming, quirky. Allow well behaved dog, essential to us.
Cons: Can’t think of anything we didn’t like !
Pros: The history and artefacts in the house.
Cons: The pool was not operating and we didn’t know until we had checked in.
When you stay at Fontevraud L'Hôtel in Fontevraud-l'Abbaye, you'll be next to a golf course, a 1-minute drive from Royal Abbey of Fontevaud and 6 minutes from Chateau de Montsoreau. Featured amenities include a business center, complimentary newspapers in the lobby, and dry cleaning/laundry services. Free self parking is available onsite.
Pros: Brekky is good however could do with some options for eggs and bacon.
Cons: Some of the rooms are in need of basic updates e.g carpet to be replaced however all very well appointed.
Pros: Fantastic hotel felt special you could visit the Abbey at night Excellent breakfast good secure parking
Cons: Nothing it was great
Pros: This is a fabulous place to stay. Converted from the outbuildings of the Abbey the hotel is at one end of the Abbey site. Beautiful conversion of the building. Clean and extremely well designed. Good sized bedroom with great bathroom. Breakfast is amazing. Guests have the possibility of wandering around the Abbey site throughout the duration of their stay including at night. Guests have a code so that they can access the gate into the village easily.
Cons: Parking is sited some distance from the hotel and the staff will come and pick your luggage up in a buggy and drive it to the hotel reception. This was Ok but they were busier on check out and there was some delay in getting our luggage to our vehicle. The onsite restaurant is incredibly expensive with the menu of the day starting at 70 euros!
Pros: The setting within the walls of the Abbaye was exceptional. The rooms are appointed with woods and natural textiles that blend perfectly with the local limestone used for the buildings, some of which date back to the 12th century. The staff was charming, friendly and helpful. The selection of foods for breakfast was of very high quality, delicious and locally sourced.
Pros: It was a great experience to stay in an old abbey as an hotel. You can also walk around the abbey during the night which is something we really enjoyed. The breakfast was great, as was the restaurant. Beautiful region for hiking, visiting castles,...
Cons: Small possible improvements: - More egg-options during breakfast. The only option was really good but some variety would be nice when you're staying more than 2 days. - Coffee in the room. There is a coffee machine always available downstairs, but something simple like instant coffee in the room would be a nice extra. - The staff in the restaurant and breakfast was really nice and friendly. Some of the staff at the reception (certainly not everyone) was rather unfriendly. - More parking. When you arrive in the evening, the parking is full because of all the hotel and/or restaurant guests so you have to be rather creative to park your car somewhere.
Located in Lerne, Le Clos Chavigny is in a rural location, within a 15-minute drive of Rabelais Museum and Maison Couly Dutheil. Planning an event in Lerne? This bed & breakfast has facilities measuring 969 square feet (90 square meters), including conference space. Free self parking is available onsite.
Pros: We absolutely loved our stay! B&B could not be more beautiful -- a tranquil fairy tale place out of time. Plantagenet suite highly recommended. Owner and host Jean Claude a delight-- wonderful breakfast and pool. Bike ride past fields of gold also highly recommended.
Cons: We loved everything.
Pros: Really lovely place to stay. Everything you would expect from a French chateau. Breakfast was lovely - croissants, bread, jams and cheeses. Hosts were happy to help with suggestions on where to visit etc. Large rooms with impressive furniture.
Cons: Only negative - there were a lot of rules to acknowledge including no food, drink or alcohol in the property/rooms which we personally found quite restrictive.
Pros: Very friendly host, beautiful place, everything very pleasant, spacious room and bath, close to many locations worth a visit
Pros: Wonderful host and facility. Thank you.
Pros: Very comfortable room excellent continental breakfast charming hosts.
Pros: Jean-Claude and Moha made us very welcome to this wonderful old manor house in the heart of the countryside surrounded by fields of wheat, sunflowers and vineyards. We stayed in the smallest room in the place at 27 square meters it was more than enough room for us. The breakfast (included in the room rate) was really good with more than enough to eat and set us up for the day. The location is convenient for visiting local historic towns like Chinon, and Fontevraud .
Pros: Extremely friendly hospitable hosts. Great comfort, peace and quiet in a beautifully restored house. Delicious and plenteous home made food. A lovely dog
Cons: Can’t think of anything!
Pros: Wonderful historic building beautifully maintained and in a great location with a short walk to a picturesque village and some good walking tracks through the forest behind the Château. The hosts were welcoming and great to chat with. Excellent breakfast. Lots of space to relax and very comfortable room. I had a great stay and highly recommend it.
Cons: No complaints. Everything was good
When you stay at Château de la Roche Martel in Roiffe, you'll be next to a golf course, within a 15-minute drive of Royal Abbey of Fontevaud and Chateau de Montsoreau. Featured amenities include luggage storage and a library. Free self parking is available onsite.
Pros: We found this place in 1996 for an overnight B&B, and vowed that if we ever had the chance we would return one day for an extended stay - we stayed for 8 days. Dominique and daughter Agatha were generous hosts and loved explaining the thousand year history of what had been a small 'fighting castle' at the edge of 3 king/dukedoms, rather than a Loire palace. Excellent breakfast in the hall chatting to other guests. We usually had lunch out at one of the many nearby historic sites, vineyards or mushroom caves, and an evening picnic under one of the chateau's shady trees with the local delicacies and wine we had bought that day - there are no restaurants within walking distance and didn't feel I could enjoy a local wine and drive an unfamiliar car on the 'other' side of the road after eating out.
Pros: Lovely people with lots of stories about the history of the castle.
Pros: The whole historic atmosphere. The chateau is a ruin of an 11th century military chateau, with later additions, with views across the valley. The ancient hall is a step back in time and the whole place is full of antiques and interesting objects of long ago. Dominique, the owner is an excellent, kind and helpful host, giving us lots of information on the local area. He provided us with superb breakfasts with good local produce. The bed was old fashioned but very comfortable. We enjoyed our stay in this unusual quirky chateau.
Cons: The room was a little small.....but in a pretty turret. Hot water was difficult to obtain at the hand basin.
Pros: Beautiful place to stay. Very peaceful, lovely countryside and very near to Fontevraux Abbé. Dominique and Alicia are wonderful hosts.
Pros: The owner was a very kind and gracious host who took the time to converse with us on many subjects, including the history of the chateau and surrounding area. The accommodations were excellent and the breakfast was superb.
Pros: This is a remarkable property which provided us a marvelous experience. A fortress and chateau-like building with pieces dating to the 11th century and several additions and revisions over subsequent years, it is now the treasured home of Dominique and Alija de Cornulier Luciniere, full of the evidence of their lives. Staying there is being graciously welcomed into their world, including old and new stories in front of their fire with the well behaved dog coming out of his lair under the dining room table to say hello on occasion. Breakfast, quiet, location, view, advice in local tourist info and dinner all terrific, as other report. Highly recommended.
Pros: This chateau is the opposite of a sleek, modern hotel - in other words it is what an ancient chateau should be. As the only guests we enjoyed the (slightly untidy) surroundings at our lesure and enjoyed the company of its owner / manager, M. Cornulier Luciniere. He breakfasted with us (served by the maid) and enjoyed relating his property's colourful history. The whole experience was relaxing, charismatic and pleasant to recall. As OAP's it reminded us of a different France we recall from visits long ago.
Pros: There is so much! Of course the castle La Roche Martel itself and the beautiful and peaceful surroundings, but the thing that makes this place stand out is the sheer effort and friendliness of the owner and the lady who was so attentive to us at breakfast (apologies we forgot your name, but dzien dobry :o)
Pros: Gorgeous property, the owners were absolutely lovely and made us feel very welcome and immediately at home. The bath was amazing! perfect after our busy days and we didn't want to get out! Lovely peaceful area with lots of places to visit on the doorstep..... lovely part of the world. We will definitely be going back soon.
Pros: A very comfortable, homely stay, wonderful hosts.
Pros: Absolutely lovely hosts and beautiful accomodation. Be sure to have dinner with Marie next door if you can. EXCELLENT.
Cons: Nothing top stay
Pros: We very much enjoyed our stay at Rachel and Tony's beautiful house. The room and bathroom were huge, beautifully decorated and extremely clean. Breakfast was copious: we could not finish everything that was offered. The location is peaceful and quiet, amidst the fields, away from busy roads. However, what we enjoyed the most is Rachel and Tony's authentic hospitality - we felt welcome and wanted there. They even invited us to join them for the evening drink at the terrace! The only regret is that we didn't stay long enough to enjoy the outdoor facilities: the swimming pool and the swing.
A stay at Hostellerie La Croix Blanche places you in the heart of Fontevraud-l'Abbaye, a 1-minute drive from Royal Abbey of Fontevaud and 10 minutes from Chateau de Breze. Featured amenities include a business center, complimentary newspapers in the lobby, and multilingual staff. Planning an event in Fontevraud-l'Abbaye? This hotel has facilities measuring 0 square feet (0 square meters), including a conference center. Limited parking is available onsite.
Pros: Breakfast good, food in restaurant extremely good but quite pricey. excellent service and ambiance and very popular so necessary to book.
Cons: I asked for a room with a shower not one in a bath and we were given a room on the ground floor which was a disabled person's room with appropriate facilities. A bit basic but functional. No frills.
Pros: It’s location on the square is perfect
Cons: The staff at breakfast were totally rude - we came down ab least 30 mins before it ended and there was no food left at all. So we asked for some ham and cheese and eggs and were told that they had lots of people for breakfast and had run out !! This was obviously a blatant lie and we had to go and see the manager to get them to bring food for a 14€ per person breakfast Overall the hotel thinks too much if itself. The rooms are small and dark and it’s overpriced. We stayed there three times now but never again I would not recommend it - there are many more better in the area
Pros: Good all round - room comfortable, service good, food excellent and location great.
Cons: Full price of room taken well in advance. Room and food on the expensive side.
Pros: Breakfast was poor compared with other 3 star hotels we have stayed at in france. 14 euros too much for it.
Cons: Pool was not very inviting. Small & surrounding area not well kept. Bedroom 27 very stuffy
Pros: Close to the abbey, car park and in the centre of the village.
Cons: Small bed room And no lift
Pros: Great location, onsite parking, good value for money and in a lovely part of the world.
Cons: Service for evening meal was slow but otherwise the whole experience was very good. Would love to find a reason to return.
Pros: The restaurant was excellent albeit a little expensive. The hotel's position in the centre of the village adjacent to the entrance to l'Abbaye.
Cons: The continental breakfast wasn't particularly extensive
Pros: We loved the location and ambience of the town , the menu Plantaganet divine and wine pairing so delicious Very helpful waiters
Cons: Room is a tad small but lovely big bed Although the breakfast as good quality there were often key things missing so it is a bit expensive I think. Such as no yogurt on one day and cold meat choice or fish on the other, could have had more cheese varieties
Pros: Great position, lovely and quiet, gateway restaurant
Cons: Town bell rings a lot at 7 in the morning.
With a stay at Seigneurie de Berrie in Semur-en-Vallon, you'll be 23.3 mi (37.5 km) from Abbaye de l'Epau and 24.7 mi (39.7 km) from St-Julien Cathedral.
Pros: Fantastic location Gorgeous accommodation Delightful host Delicious breakfast Lovely garden A very special place
Pros: The Breakfast was excellent
Cons: There was nothing we did not like
Pros: We stayed here because it's half-way between Montpellier and Cherbourg (for the ferry). Owners welcoming even though we were late: and gave us the best room at the lower price. The house is a piece of real old France, very spacious comfortable room, fresh flowers, a good experience.
Cons: The coffee at breakfast could have been stronger — but that's just me, I need a lot of coffee in the mornings.
Pros: Warm and friendly reception, charming hostess who did not spare of her time in telling us all we needed to know about the property and the area.. Spacious bedroom with lovely old features. Quiet location. excellent breakfast.
Cons: Bedroom could have been a little warmer and the outside staircase although an interesting feature not really suitable for elderly.
Pros: Hostess, breakfast and the area.
Cons: Bed was beautiful antique but the mattress and springs were hard and noisy.
Pros: Nice garden
Cons: Felt a bit like I was in the way in the owner’s home. Tried to charge me 5€ more than the price on Booking.com

Pros: We like the location, the friendly staff and the overall atmosphere of the hotel. Breakfast was first class. We ate only one dinner at the hotel - it was fine if a little over elaborated in some respects.
Cons: Not much - our room's location next to the A10 motorway meant some traffic noise if we left window and balcony door open but that was a small matter far outweighed by the charm of the hotel and its fine location.
Pros: Nice clean rooms in a very quiet location. Staff was extremely helpful and friendly, and the on-site restaurant was excellent. So many sights to see with 10-15km! Recommended if you need to disconnect for a couple of days.
Pros: Overall very nice. Room very clean and tidy. Bathroom clean. Staff very polite and ready to help. I had a very nice lunch and dinner. Bed very cosy. Nice area, quiet exactly what I needed. I will definitively recommend it to any one.
Cons: In the evening I did not have a heating and it was a bit cold. It would be better to have one. Thank god I had my hot water bottle.
Pros: We chose this hotel as a stop off from Calais to the Dordogne. It was very comfortable and ideally located. The grounds were peaceful and it was close to Saumur which is a beautiful town. We very much enjoyed the evening meal in the hotel restaurant and were very well looked after by the staff there.
Cons: I think the rooms, although spotlessly clean and comfortable, could do with some updating.
Pros: The room was clean and tidy, swimming pool area was nice. Bar and restaurant was nice, staff very helpful.
Cons: There was no air conditioning in the rooms. For an exclusive complex, this seemed to have been overlooked. Towel rail in bathroom poorly placed, I kept knocking my head. Safety rail outside window was loose, appeared to be a recycled parasol pole.
Pros: quite and peaceful place, free parking, nice terrace
Cons: we have been placed the garret room with just a tiny ceiling window, swimming pool was still close even though it was a bank holiday weekend in June with 28°C, when we asked info on the golf practise front desk staff wasn't polite questioning our good shape/experience

Cons: wifi was very weak, useless
Pros: Good location, private parking, friendly and helpful staff. Very good breakfast. You get very good quality for the amount you pay.
Cons: It would be a good solution to place a table with a bench or chairs in the courtyard of the hotel.
Pros: Clean and comfortable
Cons: Location is awful

Pros: Very nice staff, friendly people, nice atmosphere. We enjoyed the location remote from urban noisiness. The rooms were clean.
Cons: Nothing missing. It was clear that one needs a car to get there.
Located in Beaumont-en-Veron, Le Relais du Velors is in a rural location, within a 5-minute drive of Maison Couly Dutheil and Domaine Jean-Maurice Raffault. The front desk is staffed during limited hours. Free self parking is available onsite.
Pros: A relatively large room, parking area and there was a bath!
Cons: It would be perfect if there were a dryer.

Private parking can be arranged at an extra charge. Guests at the hotel can enjoy a continental breakfast. Saumur is 22 km from Hotel Restaurant Les Roches, while Chinon is 7 km away. The nearest airport is Tours Loire Valley Airport, 66 km from the accommodation.
Pros: We were two cyclists who had cycled a long way by bike and arrived later than planned, after dark. There was a good secure garage in which we could lock our bikes overnight. The proprietor was very friendly and cooked us a delicious evening meal at short notice. The hotel was clean and comfortable and breakfast was adequate (croissants, bread, butter, jam and coffee). There was a supermarket over the road that was quite conveniently situated.
Cons: The hotel was easy to find in the dark but situated on a main road. So there was some early morning traffic passing outside of our bedroom window, but didn't cause too much noise (the external window roller-shutters were quite effective).
Pros: Quiet, quaint, off the beaten path in a beautiful valley filled with palaces and troglodytes.
Cons: July 13-14: celebrating French long into the night.
