About Little Sister - Downtown

Little Sister DTLA features East-meets-West inspired dishes served in a relaxed social environment that feels more residential than restaurant, as if you"re being invited into the Chef Tin's home. Little Sister's menu showcases Chef Tin's take on one of the more interesting and rich collisions of food and culture that was borne out of the European colonization of Southeast Asia. Dishes blend and balance the spices and flavors of Southeast Asia with French techniques and Dutch and British colonial influences. The menu is continually and progressively evolving, reflecting inspiration and the seasons. Scott Young along with Chef Tin curates the restaurant's wine and beverage program with a focus on intriguing labels, both domestically and from around the world. Craft beer selection includes special batches from The Brewery at Abigaile, brewed only for the restaurant.

Rude management. Asked to use Open Table gift check and they said it was ok. We sat down and ordered and after opening a bottle of wine they came to tell us that we could not use the $20 gift card. Bad customer service. \n\nThe hot pot was inedible. Way too spicy and I like spice.

My husband and I had the most amazing experience. The food was absolutely delicious and the service was on point. We ordered multiple items off the menu and the server made sure to not drop all the food at once. When one of the entrees was taking a little too long he offered to comp one round of drinks even though we didn't even complain. It is very busy, but cozy. I will definitely be coming back.

Prior to coming to Little Sister, my wife heard great reviews on the food menu. Glad to say that the place did not disappoint. Amazing food, tasty and great selection. Dumplings were so good. Our hostess and server were amazing. Highly recommend and would definitely visit here on the future. The only issue was that the background music was a bit loud; however the food and service makes up for it

Upon entering, the host greeted us with a smile. (Tall, blonde woman in her 20's) then she sat us at the table in a timely manner. The place was packed but there was no line. \n\nFood was good but nothing out of the ordinary. I was recommended by someone and I was highly disappointed. Simple dish that's been revamped with unnecessary choice of garnish and sauces that confused the true flavor of the dish. \n\nShould have walked right out when we didn't see any Asians dining in..\n\nWe felt very rushed by the server and tried to upsell expensive items and drinks. I am not a drinker but I felt pressured to grab a drink. \n\nShe took our order twice, then dropped off the check. Not much interactions. \n\nPaid my bill. \nTipped over 20%. \nGirlfriend was not happy.

Food was great. I liked the little sides a ton - Jasmine Rice, Cabbage, Pickled Veggies . The shared Lobster dish is phenomenal. Had the chicken as well, that was ok. Worth a try if it catches your eye on the menu. 7grand Bar nearby and Bottega Louie across the street, plenty to do in the area post dinner.

We went for a romantic Valentine's dinner. The only drawback to the experience was that we had a reservation and we were a few minutes early and still we waited for close to fifteen minutes to be seated. Someone else came in after us and was seated before us. We got an okay table. I'm not sure if this is a normal experience that most people have in LA, but this kind of thing happens to me and my wife a lot and I was told long ago by a friend of mine that works in the restaurant industry that two women going out together are usually given worse tables/made to wait longer than a party that has a man, because it is generally thought that men tip better. (I doubt this is actually true because a lot of women work in the service industries and people who work in service industries tend to tip better - if we can make generalizations). So all of this was running through my mind while we were waiting and I couldn't help wonder if it was because we were an lgbt women couple that we waited so long. Maybe it was just that particular hostess, not the restaurant as a whole. However once we were seated, it was a great experience. The waitress was fantastic, gave great recommendations on food and wine and the food and wine and dessert were all amazing. I would return for the food and wine and hope that our hostess was more on the ball next time around.

Absolutely LOVE this little jewel - wanted to eat everything on the menu. What a fantastic place to enjoy exotic dishes that are made with very high quality ingredients and amazingly prepared. I will definitely go back. I can't submit this review without saying we had the best waitress ever . Super friendly, incredibly helpful, totally passionate about the food and the Restraunt. We couldn't figure out what to order and she asked if we wanted her to surprise us - that's fun! We took her up on it and she made excellent choices. Not only was the food and service excellent, the experience was fantastic - it doesn't get much better than that! THANK YOU !!!!!

Everything was perfect as usual. But what really made the restaurant shine was the flexibility they showed while dealing with an unplanned protest that affected diners coming into downtown. We called several times on the drive in to update them and each time the staff was patient and understanding. It really made for a great Valentine's Day dinner knowing that we would still have a table waiting for us. And, as it turned out, we were able to get our favorite table! \n\nAnother job well done. Thank you all!

The food was not exactly what I was expecting it to be. I had the beef wrapped up and leaves and it was very beefy and didn't have other flavors. But what was really disappointing with the valet parking. I just got into town and waited over six minutes for the valet attendant to come check my car. While I waited I was bugged by three different homeless people asking me for money which was very scary. I called the restaurant asking if they could get some assistance so I can have someone parked my car and the hostess said that she's not able to help out with that that it's run separately from the restaurant. In turnI sat in my car scared until someone could come and help me. Very disappointed that that restaurant offers valet parking but was not willing to help when you were in a scary situation. I don't think I would be coming back to this restaurant again.

This is my first bad review on here. I am trying to remain objective with this review despite the TERRIBLE service. Ill just go through and explain why i gave the stars I gave\nFood-3 stars. \nIll start with the good first. \nPho Banh Cuon- This is basically like a pho burrito. It was amazing. \nThe lemongrass chicken- the dish we got was mainly bones and fat. Seasoning was yummy, if only it had more substance. I could have just gotten a faulty batch but i will not try this dish again.\nDuck Congee- Our waitress did not explain this correctly when she was recommending this. If she had there is no way we would have attempted to try this. The duck is basically boiled in bland starchy water with little grit pieces. Maybe this is good for those that like congee but She described congee as rich and extremely tasteful. \n\nService-1 star- would have given zero if I could. Our waitress was rude when we arrived, inattentive, and lacked the knowledge to guide us towards a suitable dish with her inaccurate descriptions. We already had 3 choices of what we wanted and she told us not to try the pho as it isnt the best and to try congee instead. When she realized we hated her suggestions(we barely touched the chicken or congee) she didn't care, she didn't remove it from our tab. Just a suggestion: Don't fight tooth and nail for someone to try something if you aren't willing to remove it from the menu when you were wrong in your suggestion!!\n\nAmbiance -4 stars- It was appealing\n\nValue-3 stars- If the food had been good it would have been well worth the price.

Great food, go off the recommendations. We picked three dishes that were recommended and all were great, but the one where we were trying to be adventurous was not good. Plus the host (male) was incredibly rude when asking us to finish up our meal and leave. I get it, it's lunch and busy, but try talking nicely to us after we just dropped almost $100 on weekday lunch, instead of a 'we're busy, get out now.' Left a bad taste at the end, instead of getting to order dessert like we had planned.

Overview:\nI decided to try Little Sister's based upon good rating on Yelp. I do agree, the plates we ordered were; original, flavorful, and the each portion could be shared with 2-4 people.\n\nPositive:\nOur waitress was very pleasant. Food was great. Price/Value was a slightly high, but then again the restaurant is located in an expensive downtown district. \n\nNegatives:\nThe restaurant was very loud and it was difficult to carry on a conversation across the table. Also, being new, the waitress informed us each plate was 'shared portion sizes' and suggested we order 3-4 plates (personally, I would recommend only 3 plates for 2-diners). However, on a 2-person table, you can only squeeze two plates on at a time, before you run out of table space. I would suggest asking waiter to stagger order 2-plates at a time. I ordered the Lobster plate, which is prepared in a tomato base in a oven/fry pan and delivered Hot to the table. The server didn't offer the customary option to have the Lobster cracked and meat removed. Basically, you're at your own risk to crack opening the Lobster and have the base splatter over your shirt, and your hands left sticky. Overall, I think customer service details can be improved.

Little Sister never disappoints. The flavors are amazing, and the ingredients include lots of lemongrass, chiles, curry and garlic. Favorites include the lemongrass chicken, pho, banh mi sandwiches, and Vietnamese noodles with beef. This place is extremely popular, and is a great place to meet friends for lunch or dinner. Do yourself a favor and make a reservation or you could have up to an hour plus wait. The wait staff are great! The restaurant is small, and with the crowds, it can get a bit lively, but it's a fun and delicious dining experience.

A group of four of us went out to eat at Little Sister and it was a fantastic experience. The food was exciting and delicious. Everything we had was interesting and wonderful. The only knock I had against it was the pork belly, which was freaking tasty as hell, was a tiny portion so we each only got one taste and then it was gone. I was craving more. Otherwise it was a fabulous night out and my partner and I plan on returning, just the two of us, to try more stuff from the menu.

We live in DTLA and my boyfriend and I dine out almost every day. I've been a fan of the food at Little Sister since they first opened but I will NEVER dine there again. 4 out of the past 7 times our service was horrible. The server/manager who thinks she's a model is the worst; she should take a happy pill and smile when serving customers. She is just plain rude. She acts as if we should be lucky to be treated like second class patrons even when our bill for 2 was $300 on Wednesday night. I feel like a cattle every time I dine there now. They fire food off so fast to rush you out. We ordered 2 apps, 3 entrees and 3 bottles of sake and we we're sitting in a very tiny two top. We could barely fit two dishes at a time and we got our entrees before our apps. We never make it a practice to tip below 20% but I refused to let my bf pay more than 12%. The bussers provided better service so we tipped them separately. Little Sister, read your recent reviews on service and get clued in.

Arrived early before the other diner arrived. The hostess refused to seat me at my table, despite the restaurant being half full. The hostess also refused to seat me at the bar to grab a drink while I waited, because they had a large party arriving. To add injury to insult the hostess found space at the bar for two people who arrived after me who didn't have reservations.\n\nThe service provided by the waitress wasn't much better, they rushed all of our dishes and hit us with the check as soon as dinner was cleared. \n\nI could empathize with the need to turn tables if the restaurant was full, but sadly that wasn't the case.\n\nThe only silver lining was that the food was good.\n\nGiven the terrible service I won't return to this restaurant.

This is our second visit to Little Sister DTLA. We were greeted by a grumpy server who never once smiled during our entire visit. \n\nTo add insult, she purposely seat other noisy & rowdy diners adjacent to our table. We later requested a new table with a better ambience. It is very true that a good portion of your dinning experience depends on the quality of service. I am sad to report that Little Sister Downtown sorely lacks good waiting service. \n\nThe food was another downer. Aside from the lack of plating/presentation, there was a nagging tiny insect constantly flying/circling around my salad. This really adds to our negative experince. The congee dish was okay.\n\nThe positive? Nice cup of coffee. Too bad this coffee is from an outside source.\n\nI would not believe this restaurant is on Jonathan Gold's LA 101 Best Restaurants List. They must have cooked a really special meal just for Mr. Gold which we poor souls sadly will never get.

Everything was great except for the hostesses. They were incredibly confused about their seating chart and it took them way too long to figure that out. They were chatting together while we stood there and the restaurant was empty LOL. Thankfully, that's SO unimportant-- The food and waiter were great! I'd definitely go back!

A nice place , good ambiance , service is good although they are so busy that it takes a lil time to flag the waiters ! Some food are great but some are mediocre, too much fusion of sauce that loses the originality of the food , some are too bland ! Will probably try next time another set of dishes !

You must have a reservation to eat here. The hostess was surprisingly rude. But our server was good, until she disappeared for a break and didn't bother to tell us. Would have given it a 4 or 5 because the food is really good but second time here and service was horrendous. First off only table to not have the water left on table even though that's all we were drinking. Table next to me after us got served water and had a full one left. I had to ask twice.i Than ordered the items with the waitress who actually was saying she can take the shrimp out the pork spring rolls because my date was allergic. We started with beef tartar that never came and 10 minutes later waitress said they were out and she forgot. Got served two of the three dishes we ordered and when finished she brought a desert menu and I asked what happen to the third dish she had a puzzled look and said something about her memory that day and I reminded her it was the dish we spent the most time talking about because of the shellfish allergy she said she could see if they could make something else being that they stopped cooking according to her. We got are red velvet ding dong and left. That was very rude and never apologized only offered to take the dish we never got of the bill. Really you had to let me know that as a sorry we won't charge you for something you did not get. If I go again I will go to the other little sister in MB. Service was worst than a Denny's

Our entire meal was rushed. It surprised me how the runners, servers, and kitchen staff could not pace our order (based on the list of items we ordered) and listen to our multiple requests to slow our food service down. We asked EVERYONE who came to our table to slow our service down. As this was a business meal, everyone dining with me is in the food and wine industry. I was completely embarrassed and regretful that I chose Little Sister to have my meeting.\n\nA great portion of our food was cold by the time we got to it. We were always a plate and a half behind because the runners would bring our food while we still had an entire 1-2 dishes not touched yet. Seeing that there was NO room (because they placed our ice bucket on the table, which took a quarter of the tabletop) on the table and food was not touch, why would you send out more food? This would be a perfect time to have the server ask us, 'is everything ok? Can I get you anything?'... and yet, our server was no where to be found.\n\nSave your bucks and dine somewhere else. This experience I wish I could forget.

The restaurant has great food and is a real find. The big problem is that they take reservations and then ignore you. The restaurant should either take reservations and honor them or just not take them. I have eaten there twice, loved the food, but the first time I waited 30 minutes passed my reserved time to sit and the second time I had to wait a whopping 45 minutes passed my reserved time to sit. That made the whole experience disappointing, which is too bad since the food is so good.

Heard about this place, and wanted to try for a long time when they just opened in downtown, and we finally made our reservation to dine here on Saturday night. \n\nWe wanted to have something not spicy, since the menu didn't really indicate the ingredients very well, nor put any spicy level notice, we asked our waitress to help us. We ordered three dishes that night, the first and second came out quite fast, but sadly the second dish which the waitress said it's not spicy turned out way too spicy! It has chili oil on top with many different hot peppers in it. The next table also told us that dish was the spiciest among the rest they ordered. We could barely finished 1/3 of it, and hoping the next dish would arrive soon. For some reason, the third dish just never showed up. After almost 40mins wait, we decided to cancel it, and they just told us that the 'kitchen is making it now.' \n\nOverall the service was just bad. The waitress didn't know the menu well is one thing, but no apologize for giving fault information about the dish and forgetting to check our order is another thing. They didn't offer to take the spicy dish back at the first place, but also didn't ask if we need a to-go box after we cancelled the last dish, since it's still having more than half left in it. I wasn't sure if the waitress basically just 'gave up' on our table or what, but she never came back to check on us after she found out the second dish was too spicy for us. \n\nIt's a very unpleasant dining after all, with one appetizer, one main dish that we could barely eat, and a 10oz sake, the bill was still almost $70 with tips. Will never return, not worth it.

Felt like I was entering a restaurant in Paris, eating Vietnamese food crafted by French chefs. Very bizarre but cool twist on the whole dining experience. The food was tasty, a little salty for my taste but overall presentation was superb and the authenticity of the food was 90% there. Vietnamese food is what I grew up eating so believe when I say they were not shy on the fish sauce in the flavorings. I like that a lot. Fusion foods tend to cut back on the seasoning, but this place did not do that at all. Overall it is a little pricey for being Vietnamese food, but considering that it is in the swankiest location in Downtown LA, and well presented, I would say it's a great spot.

We decided to give Vietnamese a whirl for brunch yesterday. Made our reservation but were running a little late due to computer issues at the hotel. We want to go again and try the more expansive dinner menu.

The food here is excellent but we couldn't figure out why it took so long to get our food. We ordered at the same time as another table but they were done with their meal and all we had by then was two side dishes that we thought would be served with the entrees. We then got a side of vegetable, our appetizer and finally our entree. The wait from ordering to get the side dishes was 45 minutes. The overall time spent here was nearly 2 hours. And this was supposed to be a fast lunch. The staff was pleasant but nobody ever explained why there was such a delay or apologized for the delay.

I liked this place. I actually wanted to like it more than we ultimately did. The food is good. Our starters were all quite spicy...and both of our mouths were on fire after the starters...once we got to the main courses - things calmed down a bit. While the food was very good, the place was so dark...it was really difficult to see what you were eating. Which bothered us, especially since the food seemed to be presented very nicely and everything tasted really good...it was just impossible to know what you were eating. Also - they were blasting music...which is never fun. I think the restaurant would do a bit better if it just calmed down a bit...and just gave great service with delicious food!

There weren't very many choices for gluten free or vegetarian. She said we should order 3 dishes for two people, and it ended up being way too much food. Fantastic food. Got a little bit of attitude from the hostess that looks like Leslie Jones on SNL until she knew we had a reservation. We ordered appetizers and entrees that all came out at once. The server could have warned us. Great noodles, seafood and okra curry. Liked the side of cabbage. Dumpling appetizer was also good. Will be back.

Went for lunch with my sister's family from Berkeley. She's a catering chef that used to work at some high end places up north. We were all impressed with the food (even her husband whom typically isn't the biggest fan of Vietnamese food). Red and Black Rice is a standout as was the Ma Po Tartare, Lime Beef Salad, and Vietnamese Coffee Flan. Some dishes can be on the salty side, depending on personal taste. But everything is flavorful and very well prepared.

Never had Vietnamese food before, so it was a fun experience. Food is delicious, especially if you like it spicy. It is not a big space, and when we were there for Sunday lunch, every table was taken. Service was good, considering how busy they were, and they were attentive to our needs. Would definitely go back. Parking is a challenge, but worth the effort.

Should have read all the negative reviews about the rude, unfriendly and unprofessional service specifically from the hostess(Latina with bad bleached hair). Made reservations via Opentable for lunch with my elderly Dad On Sunday, 7/17/2016 and specifically requested seating by the window. When we arrived the restaurant was practically empty. This particular hostess was not attentive, unfriendly and argumentative. Honestly, if not for our nice and professional waitress Maria, we were on the verge of walking out after ordering several entrees: Wonton middle soup, Prawn papaya salad, Red and Black rice w/ seafood, Shaky Shaky beef. Overall, the food was okay, not spectacular. Red and Black rice w/ seafood, Shaky Shaky beef were over seasoned and too salty and almost inedible...we ended up taking the rest to go, to donate to the homeless down the street. Perhaps if we had a more positive experience with the hostess, the food would been more edible, as the hostess' combative response and unprofessional demeanor is sub par and not merit a return to Little Sister downtown LA.

I have been here twice for lunch and both times the meal was solid. Though the dishes are recognizable in concept, the flavors are so unique and complex. I love the levels of flavor even in a simple dumpling. The Autumn Paper Rolls were so refreshing and satisfying. I loved the braised pork. I did have one disappointing dish - spare ribs which were a bit overdone and dry. But it can't be 100% every time. One dish won't stop me. I'm returning until I have eaten the whole menu.\n\nA great addition to downtown scene.

Delicious southeast Asian fusion for an incredible price, particularly in DTLA. Two entrees and an appetizer filled us up completely and we were out the door for under $50 including tax. The atmosphere is basically a classic upscale shophouse ripped right out of Singapore or Bangkok. The only star dropped is Service -- which kills me to do. It took about twenty minutes for any server to approach us (water, drinks, food, anything) even though tables to our left and right were being helped. HOWEVER, once we had service, it was exemplary with just the right amount of attention and check-ins. Highly recommended dining experience.

Well, Little Sister DTL jumped to the top of our favorite list in DTL. This is a tough decision to make given the other great restaurants in the area and just across the street. \n We enjoyed the simple sesame sourdough baguette and the Balinese meatballs with the chutney and pickled okra. Okra is not our favorite, but this was the best pickled okra we've had.\n\nThe main dishes were the stars of the meal. It will be tougher to pick a favorite and tougher to not order the same two dishes when we return. The snapper fillets in hot curry and dill had such delicious flavors with a sauce you would love to drench simple rice with. It was impossible to stop eating even when full. At the same time, we shared the red and black rice with mussels, shrimp, octopus, scallop, sausage, confit pork, lime leaf aioli, and okra. This was like a sea food paella with the most perfectly prepared okra and amazing flavors that started with the great smells. \n\nWe can't wait to return. We sat down to dine at 5pm on Saturday, when it was still quiet, then by 6pm the place was packed with not room for walk ups. We recommend a reservation so you don't miss out.

Positives include very good service, excellent recommendations, and great flavors. Negative was the lobster - it is not for everyone because it can be difficult to crack, can get messy, and at least ours did not have that much meat. However what was there was very good. Enjoyed the xo pea tendrils, and the the pork, shrimp, crab dumplings . I would order each of those again. The Gruner Veltliner wine by Habit pairs really well with the spicy food. And the pickles - a great way to start the meal. Each dish is meant to be shared and the presentation was well done. Our group of 4 was able to experience a wide variety of dishes. Another tip, when you finish a dish, you may want to keep the sauce for something else so don't let the staff quickly take it away. (This is not a criticism - they do their job very well in a busy place). \n\nIt can get loud. Tables are close and it is a small space. But that should not discourage anyone from visiting Little Sister. Make an earlier reservation if that is a concern because if you enjoy this type of food, then this is a place that should be on your list. \n\nThe next day I received a call from the restaurant thanking us for coming into dine. Nice touch, and with a follow up like that (even though I already knew I would) it just confirms that we will return. There are many other dishes on the menu to explore.

She was extremely rude when she finally sat us down, choosing the furthest tables near the restrooms despite there being plenty of seating closer to the Windows. On our way we out, she failed to even be cordial enough to greet back when we left. I love the food at Little Sister, but I'm always disappointed by the service, especially for lunch. I made a reservation for noon, arrived 15 minutes early, and was not seated until 12:20. Around 5 parties, who arrived after noon, were seated before me. I ordered a duck congee that usually comes with a side of bamboo and herbs. I had to request the bamboo and herbs myself; the waiter did not know about the bamboo and brought me chilli oil. I received okra on the house, but it was severely under cooked and impossible to swallow. The restaurant ran out of congee/soup spoons, so I had to use a stainless steel ladle and regular spoon instead. It took my time with the congee, waiting for it to cool off, because the stainless steel spoon kept burning my lips. My waiter was nice, but my overall restaurant experience was sub par. The restaurant could improve with more attention to diners' needs and details.

In a very smartly designed and comfortable room, you will enjoy one of the better DTLA meals. Everything is nicely spiced and expertly constructed. Sometimes you might imagine that too much is in a single dish, but a great chef's palette makes it all work. \nWe were at Otium a couple of weeks earlier. I prefer Little Sister. It may not be a fair assessment, as Otium is still getting its sailor's legs, but at Otium, I found the food too preciously conceived, and many of the plates a muddle of flavors. I wanted to take my recently married friends to one of my faves as a treat. I've been there a few times and was really happy with most of the dishes. I love the design of the place and the staff has always been friendly and great.\nThis time, I realized a few things based on their comments. \n1) It was deafening. Really loud, to the extent we had to shout at each other. I think I had sat at the bar the other times which was easier, but this was too much.\n2) One of my friends doesn't like fish and is trying to be mostly vegetarian. He's also allergic to nuts. As it turns out, most of the dishes are made with fish sauce, and the ones that weren't had nuts. The one vegetarian fresh roll came with a peanut sauce, and the alternative dip was with fish sauce. So he really couldn't eat much of anything. I think it might have been wise to go somewhere else, but we stayed.\n3) This is the second time that I ordered something that turned out to be fried although it didn't specify this on the menu. I don't eat fried food but at this point we had already sent the wine back so we didn't want to be too difficult. (It was the chicken, previously the imperial rolls, which are fried rice paper. Those I sent back.) They should really specify that.\n4) They were out of bubbly water (?) It would have been nice for them to get some from a nearby store or restaurant for us.\nAnyway, I was really happy with the food in general, but felt horribly for my friend, and his husband was so-so about the meal as well. And they've got to figure out something about the noise.

My husband and I shared an exceptional meal here last weekend, before catching a show at the Theatre at the Ace Hotel. Tables were snug but the interior design is so sharp--and the lighting flatteringly low--that the effect was still intimate. A friend from MB recommended we try the $38 lobster (with leftovers made into lobster fried rice). Since we were already ordering the shaky beef, served over sauced rice with cherry tomatoes (EXCELLENT) we didn't want to double up on the rice, especially as we couldn't do leftovers that night. So, we might've missed out on a big draw of ordering the lobster. As it was, we loved the savory coating around the shell, and the larger pieces were delicious (served w lemongrass infused dipping sauce) but we were at a loss as to how to get meat out of smaller legs. So lots of waste and our waiter removed our shell bowl early and never offered fresh plates for the rest of the meal. So things got v messy, which detracted a bit from enjoyment. We also shared the pea tendrils, sautéed with shards of dried scallop. Oh boy, that's a must! And I think they brought us the papaya salad last as an oversight. Either way, it was quite tasty! The shredded papaya had tiny strips of dried beef, which brought a different texture and taste to what you might expect. Will definitely return!

had great reviews and getting a reservation was hard for a few weeks, but frankly the food seems very 'Westernized', no strong flavors. Never been to Vietnam so can't really compare with the native cuisine, but I would say it's more 'fusion' than authentic. wines seem very overpriced.

I had the green papaya salad twice now and prefer it with the shrimp instead of the beef jerky, but the flavor and texture of the salad was the perfect blend of tangy and crisp. The same perfect juxtaposition of flavors goes for the red & black rice dish with its blend of savory and spicy. I truly enjoyed all the bursts of flavors. The food is amazing and unique and has us craving for more. The desserts were suprisingly good too. The only thing Little Sister needs to work on is their service. Both times we experienced staff that were inflexible but for no apparent reasonable explanation such as refusal to remove the empty blue mason jar from the small, crowded table when it no longer served to contain all the serving spoons. Perhaps it's a result of being so popular?

Try the grilled octopus skewers, rare beef salad and pork stew over rice. I went with a friend who said the dishes reminded her of the food her mom made as a kid but with subtle modern twists. We loved the complementary flavors of these three dishes. Can't wait to try more!

The dishes are delicious and generously portioned. I was pleasantly surprised by the robust flavors of the congee, the consistency was neither watery nor overly thick, in short it was made to perfection. The noodle and rice dishes are similarly made exquisitely, the attention to detail to every element is evident. From the salted peanuts to the carrot slices to the nicely charred grilled beef, each flawless ingredient was combined to made an impeccable dish.

Overall quite good. I have an intimate knowledge of the Asian mix of items on the menu, and I found most of what we ordered a great improvement on the standard fair.\nThe dumplings were just ok though, I was hoping for a more gourmet take on them, the skin was more production in texture and not as good as home made. the filling was better than the skin and also ok.\nThe Octopus was amazing, and the curry spicy chicken was fantastic. Very good spot, and obviously there is talent in the kitchen, maybe they could aim a little more of that authentic excellence at the dumplings!\nThanks, Great Spot!

We had no idea what to order given we were not familiar with Vietnamese food so we relied on the waitress recommendation. She mentioned a 'share' type menu and said 3-4 dishes would suffice and pointed to top sellers. We ran by her our choices and thought they were great choices. The crispy rice spring rolls were good (wasn't floored as have had these elsewhere so not really different), the cole slaw type salad w/ prawns got boring after a while, the signature shaky shaky beef was overcooked, accompanied by rice and some greens- which to our dismay, made the other black and red rice dish redundant (way too much rice in addition to the other, and very little ingredients) which the waitress could have pointed out- We would have not ordered more rice and give another dish a chance.\nSo, I would recommend that you ask if the ingredients will be repeated when you make your choice.

Went for lunch with a girlfriend and ordered the congee with confit duck, some red and black rice with seafood that basically tasted like paella, and some bomb spring rolls. No complaints on the food, and the wine list was pretty good. Only real problem is the tables are too close together so you definitely feel like you're dining with strangers. Not my favorite, but a small price to pay for great food and good service. Make a reservation for lunch! I did, and we still had to wait a few minutes.

Extraordinary. We liked everything. The 4 of us had the Balinese Fried Meetballs, Pork, shrimp Dumplings and Imperial rolls to start. ALL extremely tasty. Pork Spare Ribs, the Shaky Shaky Beef and the e-fu noodles were also outstanding (and i'm not a noodle fan). Our only disappointment was the salt and pepper lobster. Seemed like little meat for what you pay and it was extremely hot, i think just a bit overdone, thought the flavors on how they prepare is great.\nIt's rare that we go to a restaurant these days and like it all. The flavors are fun and just all well prepared.

So we made reservations for dinner at 9 p.m. \nWe arrived on time, they seated us right away, however the place was rockn' loud with Hip Hop and Rap music as if we were at a club. If you wish to have a conversation forget it.\n\nI asked if they have the music this loud at lunch time and the waiter said yes.\n\nThe wine was nice, but nothing special and $15/glass not much flavor as well. \n\nThe salad with shrimp was great, however the octopus dish was grilled and burned and so we had to send it back, it would not even come off the skewer as well. The octopus dish was also very spicy!\n\nWe had the fish which was nice. We had to order another fish since we were hungry.\n\nI would not recommend this restaurant, since they do not have many fish dishes and also very spicy. The noise level with the music was extremely loud and perhaps it is perfect for that young crowd, however it creates zero atmosphere for enjoying a lovely dinner.

I love this restaurant! The vibe is great, cool lighting, REALLY great food, and both times I've been there they play nothing but the illest hip-hop all night. If you don't like hip-hop you won't like the vibe, otherwise when you combine the music with everything else about the restaurant this one of LA's better spots. One thing kind of a drawback though is there is no liquor, just wine, beer, and sake.

We could barely eat 4 w/ wine, although us glutons, ordered 5! Four is definitely enough portion size for two good eaters. Little Sister in DTLA successfully retains the authentic flavors of Vietnamese cuisine while taking a modern approach to traditional dishes. Take for example the Banh Xeo, a crepe-like savory entree with beans sprouts, herbs and protein. Little Sister has taking the humble Bahn Xeo to the next level by not only making the crepe thicker, but also crunchier and heartier in flavor at the same time - I grew up with this dish and I can attest this is not an easy task. The Banh Mi, also known as Vietnamese-French sandwiches, are also delicious. My only gripe is that the prices are relatively expensive for Vietnamese food. If my parents found out that I paid as much as I did for Banh Mi when I could pay the same to buy three in the San Gabriel Valley, they would shake their heads in shame.

Hello All-\n\nLast week was the second time I had dined at Little Sister. The first time was with a friend that was visiting from out of town and I thought it would be fun to play tourist in my own city. We popped into Little Sister for lunch we ordered the Imperial Dumplings and two Bahn Mi sandwiches (brisket and chicken) both were really great and tasty.\n\nFor dinner last week I met up with a friend-to catch up. We ordered a few things--sharing is caring--dumplings again (twice as nice) The 'hot pot' beef and the shaky shaky beef with garlic rice. Amazing! Flavor, flavor, flav! The only thing we didn't like was feeling kinda rushed at the end. We were there to catch up and enjoy being out and for some reason it felt like 'hurry up and eat'. Not cool Little Sister.

The service was fast, the waitperson was helpful but didn't overinform me about anything. She gave me time, checked on me periodically and was pleasant. I got to watch one of the chefs doing his thing, and actually saw him make my meal in particular, which he just handed right to me since I was so close. I got the prawn cabbage cashew salad- it was amazing. Such a good balance of salt and sweet with beautifully cooked prawns- I actually already tried to recreate it for myself! Terrible overall experience! We were seated about 15 minutes behind our reservation time, which to be honest, we were cool with - it was a busy night (especially for a Tuesday) and a bit of delay was understandable. But once we were seated, it took another half an hour to get any sort of service. The server didn't bothering to explain the menu (its all small bites for sharing, so as first timers, we needed some help figuring out what to get). The place was really cramped, really crowded, and really loud - the music was turned way up, and everyone was trying to scream over it... I understand that the idea would that the restaurant would be loud and active and energetic, but this was just poorly done... And a bit deafening. And It didn't really work in a tight narrow space with an intimate seating arrangement.\n\nThe food was passable. While the menu was exciting and inventive, the execution fell short. Everything was over seasoned and flavors weren't balanced - no nuance at all. A lot of the food came out a goopy, greasy mess. It was a shame, because on paper, the food seem like they should be amazing. It just seemed like the entire place was run by people who didn't give a shit. \n\nDon't waste your money here.

i was skeptical at first, vietnamese food isn't really my favorite. but my husband loves vietnamese and he chose the spot for our anniversary so..... we had 6 dishes which stuffed us completely and to my surprise, it was more of a southeast asian/so cal asian fusion than bougey vietnamese. it had just the right amount of flavor in every dish and while the flavors were mostly quite strong, there were also some that were surprisingly light, which is not a common adjective for southeast asian dinner menu items in my experience. it was great. \nthe service was professional but unassuming, casual but polished. the ambiance was similar - little dark for my taste, but it was 'hip' (though I am not), and the music was good (hip-hop, the real kind, not top 40). all in all it was a successful anniversary dinner and i've been back twice since for lunch with my girlfriends and brunch with my kids. winner.

It is rap and they were all laughing at one song that I found to be offensive . Granted I'm 30 years older, but they said they like to watch the reactions to business people who sit at the counter and hear the music. The staff would probably find show tones offensive but they won't lose customers over hearing June is busting out all over compared to racial slurs in a song.

My party of four (2 adults and 2 kids) ordered two bowls wonton noodle soup and one salted cod fried rice. The soup broth was an authentic shrimp broth; very tasty but not greasy. The salted cod fried rice was delicious too. I wished we ordered the e-fu noodle (the one with the pork belly) too, but we were in the mood for wonton noodles. Anyhow, it was very good (would have preferred more wontons than noodles though). I had to call the restaurant to ask about their pricing, since YELP had them pegged at $$$ and there is no pricing information at their website. You can, on average, expect to pay between $10 and $20 for their noodle/rice dishes. Very nice ambiance (with interesting decor - helicopters depicted on the walls but in Chinese paintbrush style). I liked that they did not offer the kids any plastic utensils and did not replace their glassware with plastic cups. Street parking was a bit tricky in the area, but there are ample parking garages. Location was interesting too. We are out of town visitors and found the juxtaposition of fairly expensive restaurants and a large homeless population to be thought provoking. It is pure luck that we are not out there and they inside the restaurants. Anyhow, I would visit Little Sister again the next time we are in the area.

He would tap me if he was going to ask me something and when I turn he walks away. He did this twice. The music was way too loud. I couldn't hear the person across from me unless I yelled over some gangster rap song that kept saying bitches fuck. It's a bad place to take me girl for something romantic. Waiter only asked me if I wanted another cocktail once during the whole time I was there. I wanted to drink more, but he never came. I think I hurt my shoulders from cramping my wide shoulders to a tight area so I can eat and not touch others around me. Staff needs more training.

Great asian fusion with interesting combination of foods and flavors...some with a bit of spice and kick...attentive staff...nice variety of menu and beverage choices.

Walking around Saturday night, I saw this packed little restaurant on 7th and Grand. I was looking for a lunch place and I booked it on the spot. The food was as amazing as the decode and staff. It has it's own feel and sense of place. Very enjoyable.

We took a Vietnamese colleague for his birthday lunch. We enjoyed what we ordered,\nhowever, we were surprised you did not serve any Pho for lunch. Also, you may want to re-consider charging $5.00 for a tea bag and hot water? Really? Maybe consider investing in some teapots. The restaurant is quite lovely and we enjoyed our lunch very much. Thanks.
