About Otium

Otium is a contemporary restaurant that draws from the rich culinary heritage of Timothy Hollingsworth. It is designed to be a social restaurant with a dramatic open kitchen merging indoor and outdoor spaces. The restaurant’s name, Otium, has its roots in Latin. A word that is meant to emphasize a place where time can be spent on leisurely social activities, both eating and drinking; adjacent to one of Los Angeles" most important cultural streets—Grand Avenue—and next to its newest, most vibrant addition, the contemporary art museum, The Broad. The restaurant draws inspiration from the 100-year-old olive trees planted in Broad Plaza by utilizing rustic cooking with live fire and sustainable ingredients grown in the garden of the restaurant’s mezzanine. Otium strips away the rigid formalities of dining while focusing on the quality of food, warm service, and relaxed casual ambience.

I've been a few times now....in the dining room and in the bar. I enjoyed each visit immensely.\nThe food is lovely....inventive.....and beautifully presented. Service hits just the right note. It's a great space....with a nice 'buzz'....but we didn't have to scream to be heard above the *din.* I almost wish I lived downtown.....so I could make it there once a week. But I will go out of my way to return.

Otium continues to deliver each and every time. It has become my 'go to' place when in downtown Los Angeles. Finally tried the Sunday brunch menu. There are some gems on it that one doesn't see on the dinner menu. I loved it and will make it a point to go back Sundays, as well as my regular weekly visits.

I was there for the first time. I had a number of problems that night. They ran out of bread after we asked for it. Halfway through our dinner the waiter came to us and said they ran out of one of our main dishes. I also had ordered one of the sashimi appetizers but it never came to the table so we had to have it taken off the bill. Lastly, when I made the reservation I was asked if it was a special occasion and I said it was the 60th birthday of one of the people in my party. They asked me what his name was and I gave it to them. When we ordered dessert, there was nothing done to commemorate the birthday. Why did they ask me if they were not going to do anything about it? We began with cocktails but we ordered wine after that. The wine wasn't brought to the table until we were already well into the last course before dessert and that was only after I had reminded our server to bring the wine. I would consider coming back again because the food was so good but I have my reservations about the service we received that night. Our server appeared to be so rushed I felt like he had too many tables to tend to. When we asked him to describe certain dishes to us, he rattled off the ingredients so fast I could barely understand what he said.

Third or fourth meal here: enough surprise of 'freshness' (they do have to pay the rent you obnoxious culture pirates) to make me appreciate the menu even more... fantastically curated & articulated cuisine based on what is good and actually locally available.

Food was excellent. Staff tried to best they could given the limitations of the 'small plate - large plate' format. Way too much noise to have a pleasant overall experience. When will the architects be kind to the diners and design noise abatement into new restaurants? All in all worth a visit to this high concept, high design new addition to the downtown scene.

Food was excellent. Service friendly and informed. BUT MUCH TOO LOUD. Waiter confessed that he finds he has to shout to be heard when he is presenting information on specials, etc. It is almost exhausting to try to talk while eating there. Spoils what would otherwise be a great experienced. Food excellent. Décor and ambiance terrific. Wait staff friendly and helpful.

The food was delicious. We tried a couple of items from each category and there was only one pasta dish -a ravioli something with duck on it that was not great but everything else perfect. Our server was attentive and made some good recommendations. We sat inside but I would definitely go back and sit outside near the olive trees. My only complaint is that it is noisy inside but I think so many restaurants are these days. I would definitely go back.

The food is outstanding and the service is excellent!!! The noise level is appalling. You have to scream at the top of your lungs if you want to have a reasonable conversation(it goes better with a glass of wine though). The atmosphere of this kind is acceptable in a more mainstream place, like, for example, Bottega Lui, but not in a fine dining place where you want to enjoy your meal.

Expensive and mediocre food. Butternut squash preparation was uneven. Some delicious pieces. Some undercooked. Was expecting a twist on this New American staple dish and the accoutrements were fairly pedestrian. The buckwheat bucatini was outstanding and the only standout dish we were served. The waiter specifically told us he would course out the dishes to maximize the experience but the scallops came out right with the bucatini and were not as crisp and meaty as they should have been by the time we got to them. The sauce for the scallops was a tad too sweet. A good meal, but for $100 per person it shouldn't even be a question that the food will be excellent. At the end of the meal the host asked us how the meal was and we tried to give constructive feedback but he immediate turned and left us after we said, 'Lovely...' without waiting for us to finish.

Feel so fortunate that this new restaurant by the new Broad museum is open late so we could eat after opera. I can see why the LA Times has called Otium 'LA's most ambitious new restaurant in years'. Hands down THE MOST innovative restaurant I've ever had the privilege of dining at both from culinary and architectural perspectives. Open kitchen that u can walk thru. Open wine cellar. And the fact that most dishes contain no (or very low) carbs so I can save the carb intake for dessert: perfection. The only downside is that it's quite expensive since it's all small plates, so you end up ordering several things, and even more so if you order some of their signature (yummy and innovative) cocktails with your food.

Great ambiance - great light, modern but warm decor, music that is not to loud - with good views of the beautiful architecture of The Broad next door. The food was very good with gorgeous presentation. We ordered six items: a beet and avocado salad (the best in my opinion in terms of flavor and texture experience), three fish dishes, one pizza like dish and one off menu smoked french toast with pork belly. Quite good. My only quibble with it was that the fish dishes really needed just a little something more in terms of flavor. It was nice but a little bland. The cocktails were delicious. All in all, it is a great place to stop into before or after a visit to The Broad or a performance at the Disney Concert Hall.

Just a giant MEH of an experience. \nLovely decor. Horrible music choices - some 3-7 year old top40 tunes. This music made the noise quite unpleasant. Service: typical LA dead smiles and insincere pleasantries that aren't necessary in this decade. Walking to the toilets to wash my hands of something unmentionable you get to go through the kitchen between tables of people mixing/preparing food - a ridiculous idea. \nThe fish choice was terrible - we left it on the plate: it was not the fish we chose, so must be a part of LA's fake seafood issue. \nPrices are unreasonable by any stretch. \nThe only ok part is architecture (with bad acoustics).

Overall food was delicious, we especially enjoyed the foie gras, oxtail tart (absolute must) and the black cod. The beef tartare was slightly too salty but was presented well and had interesting flavors. The toro was of excellent quality, however the rice accompaniment was overly seasoned with vinegar. We were also thrown by the sequencing of the dishes- we received the oxtail tart before the items from the raw bar. The hamachi was one of our least favorite dishes. Nonetheless, the true star of our meal was our server- Steven/ Stephen?- service was attentive and impeccable. Would recommend Otium and look forward to returning. The mediocre (in fact, poor) service spoiled the experience for me. We noticed that the waitress at the adjacent tables spent more time explaining the menu to other diners than our waiter spent with us. Basically, he dropped off the menu, told us that the dishes were smaller at the top and larger at the bottom, all meant for sharing and we should order 3-4. We ordered 2 dishes and sparkling water and a glass of wine for my partner. The water was barely sparkling and when the staff came to re-fill it, it seemed like they randomly refilled with still or sparkling without inquiring. There is no bread served -- the waiter should have told us that because many restaurants do bring bread. After the first course came (falafel) within minutes of ordering (very fast, almost too fast), we asked about bread...would be nice to have some bread with the falafel. Waiter said, must be ordered. So, we ordered bread (3 rolls for $ 9, delicious) but we had nearly finished the falafel by the time the bread came! Still, the falafel was delicious. The waiter tried to pick up the nearly empty plate of falafel, but there was still a little left and lots of yoghurt sauce left. I had to keep an eye on it after that so that I could mop up the sauce with the bread. Then the wine came -- would have been nice to have had it with the falafel. Then the halibut came -- again delicious. We finished it quickly. By this point, we had been in the restaurant for 30 min and were full and satisfied, but were willing to look at dessert menu. Sadly, no waiter to be seen. Plenty of waiters at other tables, just not at our table. Finally, we asked one of the other waiters for the menu. Our waiter brought it, and was rude when my partner gently inquired whether he was especially busy tonight. No inquiry about coffee or anything else, he just brought dessert and the check. By the way, the restaurant is very noisy. Good for young people. I wish they had an area for older people who like quiet!

I really enjoyed this restaurant and thought the food was very good. I'm a big fan of Chef Tim Hollingsworth and after seeing the Broad it was a perfect and easy spot for lunch. The food was very good but not mind blowing. Overall, the comfort of the food seemed to fight with the slickness of the place. I feel like it has t found what it wants to be. The roasted potatoes, the pastas excellent. Didn't love the chicken taco. Specialty cocktails sort of missed the mark for me both in portion, flavor and originality. \nDon't get me wrong, it is well worth a trip here and not really badly priced. I'd go back in a minute and I truly love this chef. The details of stoneware, stemware, glassware is nice. Service excellent. I feel like it just needs a focus on what it really wants to be and fine tuning the offerings. I'll look forward to coming back.

this review is for saturday brunch. we ordered french toast, mole, potatoes, pour over. french toast (smoked) with pork belly - was NOT hot, barely lukewarm. toast cubes were dry, the pork belly was overcooked and so dry that it hurt to chew them - not at all tender (i know my pork belly, grew up in a house full of korean pork belly snobs). i think my friend and i ate maybe 1/2 of it if that. mole was good but nothing exceptional. potatoes, granted they were supposed to be salted, were overly salty and soggy. not crunchy as advertised. pour over - 2 orders. it would've been nice if the waitress told us 1 order produced 2 cups so that we didn't have to waste the 2nd order that arrived 5 minutes after the first. My friend and I called to let the Restauant know we would be late as the traffic was really bad. The host was very nice and asked us if we would be okay to sit at the bar area since we were late. We didn't mind at all as we only wanted to have a quick dinner before our concert at the Disney Concert Hall. We told our waiter in the beginning that we have to leave by 7:45pm to walk to Disney Concert Hall. Everything was fine including food and service, except our appetizer didn't come even after we finished our entrée. The guy (not our waiter) who finally brought out the appetizer was very apologetic and offered to take the appetizer off the bill. We didn't even complain at all but were very appreciative about this gesture. Our only concern was we didn't want to miss the concert. We decided to bag the appetizer to-go. When we received the bill from our original waiter, the appetizer was not taken off from the bill. My friend had to get up to look for our waiter and explained to him (it should have been done through internal communication) about the appetizer charge since we were in a hurry now due to this glitch. Overall, we had a good time and enjoyed the food. Will definitely come back and try more dishes.

The restaurant is probably best suited for foodies with money to spend who enjoy the energy of a buzzing atmosphere.

Creative food that highlights the ingredients. I love that the combinations are nouveau with a hint of familiarity. Great for pre/post theater and museum goers. Excellent service. There was even a person refilling water glasses in the community table of the bar seating area. The mid-century modern furniture, interior design and dinnerware give a warm feeling to a modern space and building.

My wife and I first noticed the restaurant while visiting the new Broad museum downtown L.A., but without reservation, the wait time would have been too long, so we reserved a seating as a pre-theatre event. The hostess was very warm and welcoming.\n\nOur server was knowledgeable and described foods well and advised us that all dishes are meant to be shareable and would be typically brought in one at a time as they get prepared. After reading through the menu, we ordered Avocado with Beets, Wild Rice, Amaranth, Grapefruit, Miso; Foie Gras Terrine with Genoise, Cranberry, Celery, Pecan, Whipped Honey for appetizers and then Melted Vidalia Onion with Brown Butter, Hazelnut, Scallion, White Truffle and Grilled Fish (sword fish belly) with Tamarind, Tomato, Fennel. For desert, we shared a Chocolate Four Ways with 64% Manjari, Balsamic, Candied Orange.\n\nEvery dish was an OMG moment, one after another with perfectly balanced flavors that hit you at different times. The dishes don't appear large, but left us completely satisfied in terms of feeling appropriately full. All ingredients were well selected and very high quality. As my wife stated after the dinner we could have ordered any items and be completely awed with the balance of flavors, presentation and quality of food. \n\nAbsolutely will come back to try out other items from the menu. Chef Timothy Hollingsworth is a genius without any pretentiousness and has created a menu full of honest and simple, yet incredibly sophisticated flavors and presentation.

I and my 15 year old daughters went to lunch after a tour of The Broad. Perhaps it was because I was with teenagers, but we were seated next to the service station. I worked in the restaurant industry for 15 years - I know what that means. The waiter was helpful but very inattentive. Food took forever to be served. Chicken and fish should not take 40 minutes. The Arroz con pollo was dry- both the chicken and the rice were dry and hard. The fish was excellent and the potatoes were great. The gnoki was good but too few gnoki served in a $19 dish.\nVery loud. And, once we had eaten, we waited another 20 minutes for someone to collect our plates and bring us a check.\nPoor service, menu is adventurous but not really interesting, and the ambiance is interesting but very loud. Loved walking through the kitchen to get to the bathroom. That was fun, but I will not return. Too expensive for an unsatisfying experience.

THE THEME HERE IS UNEARNED, OBNOXIOUS ATTITUDE: Otium stands alone as possibly offering the most obnoxious, insulting service I've ever received at a restaurant. I wanted to like it, as I go to the Broad Museum and elsewhere downtown, and looked forward to having this as an option for dinner or lunch. I had theater tickets with a friend and reservations for an early dinner at Otium beforehand. The twentysomething 'hostess' gave us a dirty look so weird we were confused, then walked us past the tables where everyone was dining, and sat us next to a giant window with the sun beating down on the table so strongly we were squinting and began to sweat. 'That's what we have for you' she said, and walked away, when we asked to be re-seated. We both lost our appetites. Eventually, our lovely waiter felt bad for us and moved us to a nicer spot but by then our mood was ruined. Otium's management wants so desperately to be seen as a cutting-edge hot spot - but treating diners like crap will eventually give them the bad restaurant karma they deserve. If you want much better, more creative food in a gorgeous downtown setting, go to Redbird, where the atmosphere is gorgeous and the service is beautiful.

I left a note for our waitress on our bill saying the service was great but the food was terribly disappointing. I also relayed my feelings to the hostesses at the front desk. \nWe ordered the Hamachi, Octopus, and Steak Tartar for appetizers. The Hamachi was OK. Nothing special though, especially as it is one of the highest rated dishes at the restaurant. The Octopus was actually very good. Really the only reason I would even give this place one star at all. The Tartar was DISGUSTING. It was covered in this 'specialty' grain similar to quinoa with globs of a sour cream sauce that completely killed the flavor of the beef. \nWe shared the Lambs Neck as an entrée. We barely touched it. The sauce was tomato based and the seasoning was way off. And the sauce included that damn grain. The meat was tender but the flavor was hideous. (We actually took the remainder of the lamb with us, because my wife thought she could fix it by adding seasoning. We tried to eat it over rice and then eggs. There was no 'fixing' it.)\nBesides the Octopus and the service the only other positive comment I can muster was the Sake Cocktail that my wife drank. Refreshing cucumber and had a kick of vodka. Too bad the bartenders weren't the chefs. \nIt was my wife's birthday. She's a great cook and we're both very much 'foodies'.\nNot only would I not recommend this place to anyone, I will actively advise people to steer clear of this overhyped LA shit show. \nPardon my language.

Really like the agnolotti. \nThe patio should be great on warmer evenings. Nice wines by the glass. Noisiest restaurant ever! Everyone was shouting to be heard. Even the waitress had to lean down to hear us to take our orders. It appears the decibel level is intentional -- all hard surfaces. energetic is an understatement -- deafening is more accurate. Who want to screem across the table to be heard? If conversation is part of eating with friends, this is NOT the place. Too bad because the food was creative and good. Also, if you are visiting the Broad Museum, this is the adjacent restaurant.

Otium is definitely worth all the buzz it's getting. Initially I was intimidated by the somewhat unusual combinations of ingredients in some items, but found everything absolutely delicious. Took a client for lunch and we shared the kale salad, and ordered bucatini with clams, bacon and soft egg and also pork belly with rice and some sort of ginger sauce. Delicious. The only thing I don't like is that all items are expected to be shared, so they come out of the kitchen whenever they're ready. I wish that concept would go away! Is it so wrong to want what I want, in the order I want, and to eat it at the same time as my dining companion? Otherwise, a really wonderful experience. Nice wine list , great space, and welcoming staff.

I ate here for New Years Eve while in town to see Stanford defeat Iowa in the Rose Bowl! I selected this restaurant based on OpenTable reviews and convenience to my hotel, the Westin Bonaventure. Wow, what a find! This restaurant is now my favorite in LA and one of my absolute favorites anywhere. The highlight of the meal was a lobster/risotto with black truffles and a raw egg yolk and the taste was beyond description, true bliss. The Hamachi, Nori with Avocado and tomatoes exceeded my already high expectations and was better than the best Sushi restaurants. The Tai Snapper included perfectly fresh fish with a tasty tamarind based infusion. I almost didn't order the duck since it was served on a bed of chocolate and at the time I was ordering I assumed it was placed on the menu from an over-reaching chef trying to mix non-traditional ingredients - boy was I wrong; the combination was amazing. The restaurant only opened within the last month but I see Michelin stars in its future! My only complaint is the high price of their wines; for instance they had a Nebbiolo at $135 that is 50% higher than the wine is worth.

I was very disappointed this time at Otium. The hostess was unfriendly and made us wait for quite awhile for a table. Then when she finally seated us, it was at a table right next to the main door and her hostess desk. We didn't want to complain in front of our guests so we just took the table. I made the reservation well in advance, so obviously the Opentable reservation doesn't go very far in eliciting any kind of consideration. Our waitress was sweet but had only been on the job for a week, so didn't know anything about the menu. And boy did we have a lot of questions about the menu. We had dined here before so knew it was a confusing menu (strange combination of culinary items and described in a complicated way) so having a waitress that didn't know the menu or what some of the culinary language even meant was frustrating to say the least. Not sure we will try Otium again.

Otium's service was fantastic - everyone from the host to the servers (we had Leah, and she was AMAZING) to the bussers were friendly and made our experience even better. And the food! Go here with people who love to eat and share plates - everything we had was creative, flavorful, and delicious. We shared the hamachi and the blue fin tuna, then the ravioli and rigatoni. If I'd had room, I would have added the burrata tart and donabe - both sounded amazing! Then dessert was the peach ice cream with a honey spread and fresh peaches...we could not stop raving about it, and practically licked the bowl. They also put creative spins on classic drinks like the bellini and old fashioned - highly recommended! Every detail is attended to, and we felt very well taken care of and sated by the end of the meal. I can't wait to go back!

Came here for brunch before going to the Broad museum. Everything was delicious. Tried the hamachi which had such a clean bright flavor, although a little pricey for portion size. The avocado toast was really good and not your typical avocado toast. They garnished it with cucumbers & watermelon radish and a middle eastern spice & yogurt, so good! The pork belly with egg, rice & bok choy is super tasty. The tri-tip with kim chee fried rice was probably the most meal for your money (portion larger than everything else for $18) but probably my least favorite of all the things i tried. Not that it wasn't good but not the most original tasting. You would be better off getting something like this at a Korean restaurant with better results. I would definitely recommend getting a side of the crispy potatoes. They were so good i think they might have been laced with crack! Best lunch i have had in a long time....

Don't usually like din for dinner. The noise here is beyond energetic even though we were seated in a back corner. The wine list is over-the-top expensive, though the beers, including Austrian grapefruit radler, are fun. The imaginative food, however, means I will wear earplugs for my next visit, because there will be another visit! The menu, meant to be shared, is a just a list of ingredient groupings. The Apple/Endive/Gouda/Almond/Truffle was our only misfire. It was okay; other choices were good. Truly surprising were Squash/Coffee/Pepitas/Ricotta/Sorrel, Pork Pibil/Persimmon/Frisee/Mole Rojo and Cod/Burnt Alum/Purslane/Clam/Potato. Too bad we didn't bring more friends. I would give their attractive, modern interior 5 stars for 'ambience' IF the noise weren't sometimes deafening. 'Energetic' is a completely inadequate description, in this case. This is not a sports bar on game day; it can just sound like one. Diners shouldn't have to shout across the table to have a conversation. In the past two months, I've had four meals at Otium, and the noise level is completely at odds with everything else they're accomplishing. I'm fine with the music they play, even though though most of it wouldn't be my personal choice. I've observed the rise and fall in the noise level (including conversations) as the volume of the music fluctuates. Lunch is worse than dinner. I used a decibel meter and saw peaks that are in the dangerous range. The manager who came on in the middle of lunch the other day turned down the volume of the music to a tolerable level. After other friends complained to me about similar experiences, I decided that I can no longer recommend Otium, at least without a clear warning about the noise.

The restaurant is absolutely beautiful and the open kitchen where diners can walk through is amazing. The kitchen is meticulously clean and everything is like clock work. I actually saw my lobster being cooked on the grill as I was walking through. The meat, seafood and vegetables they used were all of the best quality. The execution were precise, each Hamachi slices were cut to same size and the presentation accentuate the freshness and sweetest of the fish. The sweet & sour tomatoes that came with Hamachi, the Aquachile that accompanied the Fruit de Mar and the Aji Verde sauce that came with roasted chicken were all spectacular. \n\nService was wonderful, our server took the time to explain every item on the menu and gave us indication as to how much to order and make sure we understand that 18% is already included in our bill. \n\nWe loved the restaurant and very happy that LA now has one more exciting place to go for wonderful dinner and to spend an exciting evening. \n\nThank you Tim Hollingsworth, We will be coming back very soon if we can get a reservation.

Another example of self-important foodies thinking they have to create something revolutionary and wind up producing something pretentious. The food is generally good and well-prepared, but the waiter's comments as we sat down felt like we were being up sold. 'You should share everything but order one small plate and one large plate per person.' We trusted his suggestion and had way too much food. We were told there would be a break between the smaller plates and the second course. The minute our third small plate arrived, another server started to bring the larger plates to our already crowded table. We sent them back until we were ready. After the first plates were cleared we asked if someone could clean the table that had some food spilled on it. A server did so and then made a snide comment about whether that was good enough for us now. Glad I tried it. Will never go back. Also difficult to have a conversation without shouting -- think Bottega Louie loud. This place is very pricey and I don't mind spending it if I get a quality experience for my money. There are lots of other excellent exciting newer restaurants in L A. at this price point.

We would never have made reservations had we known the kitchen was about to close, but most importantly Otium shouldn't have accepted reservations at this time slot. Very good service (Brandon). Food 7-7.5. Way too pricey for the quantity and quality. Bucatini was chewy and tasteless, except for the mild lime+cilantro, and rigatoni was the same and even tasted the same (strong lime). Uninspired recipes. Could have made better at home. Cauliflower was OK but mostly because the cauliflower itself was fresh and first quality and the roasting succeeded but basically bland and nothing to recommend to friends.\n\nWe had a good time because we had just come from a brilliant Disney Hall concert (Mahler's 9th), so we were in a good mood, and Brandon's service kept it there, but the ambiance was high roar, which may suit some Millennials (2 of our 4 are from that demographic), but the sound level was conversation crushing. Don't understand the appeal of cupping your ears and asking folks to say again. A lot. \n\nThe room is really modern and super attractive. Nice job there. Would have liked to sit outside, but the tiny front patio was jammed, so that wasn't going to happen. We didn't try the upstairs patio. Lovely setting next to the Broad with a beautiful swath of greensward in front. Nice. My advice: try once because it's visually appealing & unusual, but unless you're willing to spend minimum $80-100+ per for a main plate + glass of wine, save your money.

I have eaten at Otium several times before and have never been disappointed until my most recent visit. I ordered an ArnoldPalmer for which I never received a refill despite many requests.\nMy lunch partners did not receive their meals until 5 minutes AFTER I received mine. I ordered the halibut which was very fishy tasting and over cooked. One of my partners requested chicken with his pasta and received that after eating half his meal it came very late.\nI will hesitate before going back.

Seriously??? Bar stools on counter for cleaning while lunch is still being served?...Late reservation..two o'clock....still dining and the chairs are up and the floor is being cleaned....dining room full of diners....two hundred dollars for lunch for two and yet we get the cleaning crew to join us....The food was actually quite nice and the waiter was very polite and on his game...when he showed up...we sat for quite a long time before anyone asked us if we had been assisted. Had to ask if a waiter was assigned to the table. The food was quite nice and the restaurant is visually beautiful...the architecture however doesn't make up for the unpleasant experience....My advice...eat during peak time so that you don't experience the cleaning of the restaurant that totally ruined the experience. I gave this a three...but my real thought with this less than happy ending was a zero.

Chic modern restaurant, delicious food, outstanding wait staff, and wow were they accommodating! My husband and I are allergic to garlic and raw onions and they could not have been more helpful and accommodating (though it's important to let them know in advance). Every dish we ordered was scrumptious - tasty, fresh, perfectly prepared. Be sure and try the roasted chicken and potatoes. And the fish. This is the perfect restaurant for lunch - or for pre/post theater - or when going to the Broad Museum - or any downtown activity. We will be returning often!

A full restaurant was so noisy that you couldn't hear your dining partner. It's expensive if you order enough small plates to be filling. We went to Otium for the first time a couple of months ago and had the most amazing dinner. We were very excited to return, I actually already knew what I would order. However, they had a big change in menu and all my favorite items were no longer being made. The burrata torte - gone. The original amberjack preparation - gone. The original hamachi preparation - gone! We did order the chicken dish again and it was amazing, however the portion was so much smaller than the first time we ordered. They did change their wine list and the wine we had was exceptional, but for a $450 dinner (party of 4 with wine and cocktails) it was not worth 2 small plates and 2 entrees. We will think twice before coming back. I recommend going back to the original menu - it was sublime!

High expectations met with mediocrity. \n\nThe food was acceptable, even though the portions were tiny. The roasted chicken did not sit well with me. The fish was the highlight. \n\nThe service was unenthusiastic yet acceptable. The waiter was not educated re the ingredients and had to ask the kitchen about the gluten content. And you got the feeling the crew could care less about you or your happiness. \n\nThe ambience is the only selling point. And at this stage how many hip glass boxes have we all seen. The open kitchen is sweet. \n\nOverall, this place needs a big wake up call to change. There are too many fine dining experiences to visit. If this place was in NYC or Paris it would close in a month. \n\nIt has a lively bar scene, if you want to see a few models and bankers. \n\nGood luck.

Mildly creative yet pretentious food served in an unexpected setting adjacent to the Broad Museum. Predictably overpriced, relatively small servings. Open design gave no buffer to the cacophony of voices carried throughout the space making it difficult to hear ones table mate. Made reservation on Open Table noting the occasion, which was a form field. The server came at the end of the meal and addressed my guest by saying, 'Is there some kind of occasion we are celebrating today?' I replied that it was her birthday and the server replied, 'Oh how nice.' Not exactly what I expected for a birthday acknowledgement. The food was fine, but not noteworthy.

Made reservation 1 week prior for 4 people. Called the day before and changed reservation to 5. On day of, called 5 minutes before reservation, to tell restaurant we were caught in traffic but would be there shortly and to hold our table. They said 'fine. We'll do it.' Called again 15 min later to say we were almost at restaurant and remind them to hold our table. Again, they said fine, will do. When we arrived about 20 minutes after actual reservation we waited 5-10 minutes while they 'looked' for our reservation. I reminded them that I'd called twice. Then they told us: 'A table will be ready 'soon.' The guests are just STARTING their entrees.' !!!! I told said that we had theater tickets at 8 pm; it was then 6:45-6:50 pm. They said the manager would come talk with us, but he/she never came. Then another host came and said, 'Sorry, we have 2 large parties tonight and the soonest we can seat you is at 8:15 pm.' No recogniztion that they 'invalidated' our reservation, no apologies.

they should really make it clear that they automatically add an 18% tip, for every type of party - not just the large ones. This was my 3rd or 4th visit and I'd been 'double tipping' the entire time until I really, really looked at the bill. Not cool. Also, we had to ask several times for our final dish to be brought out (we were eating family style). That was annoying. If some dishes take longer than others, then the staff should be trained to communicate that to the customer. We ordered 4 dishes and were finished with three of them by the time the last one was brought out. This is my second experience at this restaurant where a dish was either not brought out at all or brought out late.

My husband and I arrived a few minutes before our reservation. We were told our table was still being prepared, but we were welcome to sit by the bar or on the patio, and that someone would come get us when it was ready. 20 minutes later, I check my phone and see a text from an unknown number, telling me the table is ready. This is odd, since I rarely look at my phone while I'm at a restaurant (because I think it's rude) and also because I expected someone to approach us (since they told us that someone would come to get us for the table).\n\nAfter ordering our food, my husband goes to look for the restroom to wash his hands (being that it's our first time there, he doesn't know where the restroom is). A worker stops him and tells him he's in a restricted area that's for a private party and he'll need to leave. Rather than being asked if he needs help finding the restroom (which is a very common response to a lost-looking person in a restaurant), this is how he is treated. He leaves the area and finds the restroom, then returns to the table. Part of our order arrives, but his appetite has been ruined by his experience with the staff working there, so I end up eating it myself. \n\nOur waiter then asks if we'd like dessert, even though we're still waiting for the rest of our food, which has been taking a long time. He apologizes and says he'll make sure it comes out. Since we're not having a very good time, we decide to leave as soon as possible, so we just ask for the rest of the undelivered items to be taken off the bill. \n\nI'm not sure how much of a tip we would have left, but luckily they take the guessing out for us and add 18% gratuity on the bill automatically. \n\nThe food (that we actually got to eat) was tasty, but we won't be coming back.

After reading several reviews about bad service and staff attitude if you weren't 'somebody', I can honestly say our meals was a delightful experience. And we're 'nobody', just three women who went to the Otium after seeing Cindy Sherman at The Broad. We arrived earlier than our reservation (1:30) and were actually given our CHOICE of where we wanted to sit. We chose outside, because it was a lovely day, and inside is kind of noisy. Our server was our FRIEND! We loved him! Hello, Jason Sordia! He made dining such a pleasure! He was attentive, informative, honest and a pleasure to talk with! We would totally come back just to see him! And then there was the food! We had hamachi, which was amazing and just a little spicy. We had the mole, done to perfection, and then we had the special -- and here is where I wished I could describe better what a great dish this way! It was brisket with little mini-biscuits and grilled peaches in some kind of big hot pot, served with creme fraiche and peach jam and it was TO DIE FOR. We loved it. I could have eaten it all myself. Yes, some folks only review places when they have something bad to say. No this time. We've been to Otium several times because the chef is creative. Does it fall flat sometimes? Sure. This was not one of those times. Because it's a big, busy (and sometimes loud) new restaurant with a ton of staff, the servers can be new, overwhelmed or just plain disinterested. The food was very good but here is where it fell short. The menu printed in a font only young people could see says to me that the restaurant is only catering to the young. Also, the waiter was efficient more or less but had an attitude. It felt as if because we were older that he wasn't really interested as I watched him with adjoining tables with young couples and he seemed very gracious with them. Because of the noise levels, he couldn't hear us clearly and as a result seemed very annoyed with us. He was humorless, almost rude and certainly indifferent to our needs. I wish I could remember his name as I would never want to be served by him again. At that price point service should be king. Also, was disappointed in the wine list. Only one Chardonnay was listed by the glass at $23...are we not in California?

Food is great. The first week it opened, we waited about 45 minutes to get seated with 5 people in the party. It was so cold waiting outside. Then when they brought the dishes, they kept forgetting to give us serving spoons. Other than that, things were good. Probably just adjusting to the opening week.

The host and hostess were very friendly and tried to accommodate our request of table. The bar was extremely slow, it took well over 20 minutes for our drinks to arrive. Our waitress was rude and impatient. When I didn't immediately name off all 6 dishes for the order, she snapped and said maybe we needed more time. When the coffee we ordered didn't come by the time we finished our dessert, I told her to take it off. Instead of apologizing, she brought it anyway and said the lukewarm coffee was free of charge. I'm not one to save on tips as I know many hard working waiters and waitresses depend on tips, but our entire table uniformly voiced sending a message to her by leaving 10%. It could have been a good birthday dinner, instead the mood was spoiled from the start.

My boyfriend and I had first glimpsed the Otium when we were visiting the Broad. The decor was so appealing that we decided to get reservations for dinner. We've dined at quite a few restaurants around LA and expected the Otium to be pricey, but worth the money. \n\nNot so. \n\nWhen we first walked in, there was no table available. We were a little early, so this was fine. We were directed to the bar, where I got a drink. The bartender was not particularly friendly. As I received my drink, I noticed that another bartender was making the exact same one... and while my glass was half-full, the other drink was twice the size! I'm not looking to get drunk at a restaurant, but the cocktail was $18, so I'd expect some sort of standard. I felt cheated. Then, as I was closing out my tab so that we could get seated, I saw that I was charged for a drink I didn't even order. The bartender did take it off my tab, but without any apology for the inconvenience- almost as if I were inconveniencing him. It didn't get our evening off to a great start. \n\nWe were seated near the kitchen. The space of the Otium is beautiful- very open and yet cozy though artistic and unique. The server joined us quickly and was very polite and knowledgeable about the menu, which was good because the menu was confusing! We ordered three items to share- the tostada, crepinette, and rigatoni. We're light eaters, so it was enough for us, but just barely. However, they do recommend five items. None of the items that we ordered were exceptional. The tostada was good, the crepinette was tiny and very salty (and they forgot to give it to us until we reminded them), and the rigatoni was not very impressive. \n\nThe bill came out to over $100 for a couple of drinks and some mediocre dishes. The service was unexceptional. For this price, you're better off visiting Faith & Flower and ordering some truly delicious and adventurous items!

My 2nd time here, just as good second time. Food is incredible, they must have some sort of Umami thing going on because the most simple of dishes (asparagus) just melt in your mouth; the chicken and lamb--both heavenly. We had the Little Gems salad which is like a Caesar Salad and it was a LOT. Some of the wines were quite expensive so we chose a Spanish red on the lower end of the scale and were delighted with our choice. I love this place and will try and return as often as possible!

There was not anything we didn't rave about and still wanted more in the end as there were many more items to try, but we were stuffed. The place was very busy and some seating was at shared tables. I really wanted to like Otium but I can't say it was that enjoyable. We shared the hiramasa, little gem lettuce, beef tartare, puttanesca pasta, and donabe. Plates were massive - way too much food for 2. I'm certain the waiter knew this but didn't bother to recommend otherwise. Salads started out nice. The beef tartare had way too much bulgur and yoghurt on it. Strangely the puttanesca did not have enough flavor as it's usually quite punchy if done correctly. And the donabe was just massive. I will say that the drinks are very good though. Brunch menu looks interesting - might give it a go based on it's proximity to the Broad but don't want to be disappointed again.

This was my second time at the restaurant and I thought the food was even better this time. We were there for lunch following a concert at Disney Hall. Our biggest problem was the very loud music at lunch and the type of music. I also found the service very slow this time.

This is our second visit. The food is very good but overall experience is marred by the poor service. Our server was nothing more than an order taker. Not friendly at all. We asked to sample a couple of white wines to decide between them. When we asked for a minute to decide, it took her 15 minutes to return to check back and another 10 to get the wine. We never got the opportunity to get another glass later in the meal as she never returned to the table until dessert. The meal pacing was lousy, we waited almost 25 minutes between small plates and larger planes. Speaking of dessert, they have great ones but this visit was a birthday dinner and we brought a small cake. They charge $8 per person to serve it which would have been $40. More than their corkage fee which makes no sense. They offered to store our cake for us. The cake box was sealed when we handed it over and the seal was broken when it was returned to us. Really? It's a shame that they don't have an emphasis on customer service. It's a beautiful space and the food is quite good. We dine out frequently as a family with our adult children and it's quite disappointing to have such poor service. Because of this, we won't be rushing back for another visit. There are so many wonderful options in Los Angeles that offer with whole package, including attentive service, a nicely paced meal and will happily serve your birthday cake with a candle and a smile.

Some of the dishes were great, others like the foie gras funnel cake was just too much savoriness, and though clever use of the strawberry jam on funnel cake instead of a quince paste, flambeed peach etc commonly paired with lobe of foie, it just didn't work for me. I should keep mental note that Jonathan Gold just likes fatty shit whatever it is. Grilled farm veggies were great, fish dishes were great. Overall though, not super memorable. I have heard that it was getting better each time our friends had gone in the past, so I would say it is a work in progress compared to the utter disappointment on day one. It is super loud in there, and the tapas style is not particularly suited to a formal orchestrated sit down dinner, so lots of downtime for drinking and choppin it up with friends. Also due to the spacing of the meals, I got stuffed really quickly, so don't order all at once. I was very impressed with the duck, went amazing with the 2007 Lignier Burg we had, that was probably the highlight of the night. The other highlight of the night was when we saw Antal serving, who was our server at Grace in Chicago. He is the best, so humble and gracious, love that guy, made me feel like I was at a 3 start restaurant, went the extra step. LA restaurants need more people like him. In the future, I look forward to a different part of the restaurant maybe opening up for tasting menus and wine pairings, I know, I'm just a jaded old-fashioned non-milenial.

The kitchen is beautiful...you can tell it cost a pretty penny to have such a beautiful place. Too bad that the service and food did not match that. Located in the plaza adjacent to the Broad Museum, Otium is an equal partner to that institution in its contemporary cuisine. Beautifully designed with inside and patio seating, the restaurant is comfortable. Front house staff is friendly, hospitable and efficient. Food is arranged from starters/salads to pastas and entrees. However, the food is delivered in a sequence prepared by the kitchen. So, it's all meant to be shared whenever it arrives. That must be some new age thing because in my book pasta comes before the final course -- but whatever. The food preparation is exceptional so whatever comes out you'll love it. We started with crispy potatoes served with appropriate salt and herbs along with a dipping sauce. A fill bar is provided with a great wine list. Second was a rigatonni with salted pork and butter (amazing and melt in your mouth delicious) and finally (but not in that order) the halibut. This is a fun/casual but serious food place. If you like a high energy environment with great food and creative cocktails, Otium is the place for you. Our food was innovative and tasty. My only complaint was the server forgot to deliver 3 dishes that we ordered. He was very attentive otherwise, but this type of error should not occur. However, a very enjoyable evening and a definite return.

This was our second lunch. The first time was shortly after they opened and we sat at the coffee bar, so we wrote off the surprisingly poor service at such a pricey a venue. The second time there was no excuse: the plates for each of our party of four were delivered at different times, we had to tackle wait staff for service, I was served coffee in a cup with multiple chips and fractures, etc. The food was imaginative and good. However, as seems to be the norm with similar 'hip' places, several dishes seemed to have one too many ingredients. The fact that all of us agreed that the most memorable dish was a plate of roasted potatoes for the table tells you a lot.

Service was excellent, helpful, and well-informed. But restaurant was packed, extremely noisy, and overall, this is not a relaxing dining experience. Hard surfaces everywhere throughout the restaurant ramp up the ambient noise level and the effect is like a bus terminal. Food seems well-intentioned and healthy, and the menu is creative. But the overall result was a pricey lunch in a chaotic and stressful environment.

My husband and I had tickets to the Broad at 1:00pm, so we made a lunch reservation for 11:30. The service was very prompt and the food was outstanding! Within a half hour the restaurant was packed with the business lunch crowd, so the staff at Otium was excellent at making sure everyone was served promptly. I was a little worried about seeing some reviews describing the staff as standoffish, but that wasn't the case today. We hope to return soon!

The space is very pretty, but the ambiance is a little diner-like. Food was very good actually. We tried a variety of dishes and there was only one that I didn't care for (the others in my party liked it though). However, the service was a major disappointment. It took a while to get seated, a while to get a drink order in, and another long while until we got our food order in. My husband who ordered a beer didn't get one until we were almost done with our meal since the beer tap system was not working. \nWe went at 5:45p for a 6p reservation on a Sunday (the Broad closes at 6p), so maybe that had something to do with the wait times. Will give it one more shot and report back.

WOW! I like food. I like eating it , reading about it, talking about it and making it. I like dining. I get excited when I am going to Copenhagen or Paris so I can try out new restaurants. This one? THE CHEFS IN THIS KITCHEN ARE WORLD CLASS. The building? Uber cool, set back off the street - like a jewel so you are sitting off a square with city views. The bartender knowledgable, friendly and no attitude and what a selection. The wait staff - chic, helpful, entertaining and professional. The sommelier has a great list, really interesting and unusual for all budgets and he is passionate, and a nice guy. The menu is really inventive but accessible and so diverse- the plates - great presentation and then you will have many oh my god taste orgasms... tasty! The outdoor dining was charming, relaxing and less vibrant than indoors and the inside is modern but cozy and different. And different is what I like - not ho hum--- been there, done that, seen that- I felt like I was transported somewhere else... and it was not too tough on a Friday night to get from West Hollywood - 30 minutes. IT IS SO WORTH IT and great value for money. How often do you eat out and feel like you had one of the best experiences in years? Then go here as that is what you will get and no you cannot try and figure out how to make it at home - it's that high of a standard.

Is was my second visit to Otium. First time was for lunch and it was a great experience. This time, for dinner and it was not to great. Some of the food was outstanding, some was not very memorable (grilled fish with tomato/tamarind) and cauliflower dish. Service is what really got me going. Our waiter was inattentive, I ordered a second glass of wine and had to ask twice for it, and when his shift was over, he just left...didn't hand the table over to a new server. Other thing was the restaraunt was so loud, we could barely have a conversation at our table. Really too bad, I liked this place the first time, but after this last dinner, will probably cross Otium off my list.

Everything on the menu is meant to be shared but you need to order about 4-5 dishes to fill two adults up. The falafel dish was by far our favorite dish and the duck was cooked to perfection. The servers are great and attentive. We were under a time constraint in order to make it to a concert at the Staples Center and the waiter made sure we were fed in an hour. After hearing from several people that this is one of the best restaurants in LA, I was shocked at the mediocrity of the food we ordered. Almost everything missed the mark. \n\nWhatever you do avoid the duck! I rarely opt for a $40 entree and this was an unfortunate waste. The three small strips of duck were fine as far as the flavor of the meat is concerned. However it was not particularly skillfully cooked, and the accouterments were terrible. It came with a couple of pieces of unripe raw apricot doused in vinegar. The hyper-tart flavor of the fruit with the meat was less than appetizing, but made worse by the 'black sesame' sauce that tasted of mold rather than sesame. Aside from a couple baby chard leaves, this was the entirety of my $40 entree. I wondered if the waiter urged me rather aggressively to order this dish because of some kind of quota. Compared to my husband's 1/2 rotisserie chicken for $30, the duck must be a huge profit for the restaurant. \n\nThe rotisserie chicken was quite good, and on the flip side enough food for at least 2 people. Although this dish was not disappointing, it was very simple and not the kind of dish I'd expect of the kind of restaurant that Otium is sold as.\n\nBoth our apps were also a disappointment.

It was girls night out and we were headed over to see Grey Gardens. I looked around for a great dining spot that was close enough to the theatre so we only had to park once. The reviews looked great, the menu was intriguing so we booked a table. I was a tad nervous because I had heard that the place was REALLY loud, but that can also be a matter of perspective. Walking in it had a very cool vibe, everyone was super nice and yes, the noise level was energetic, but not assaultive. I made a note when making the reservation that we had a show to catch at 8pm and acknowledged that as soon as we sat. A couple of us couldn't decide which wine (by the glass) to drink, but the server and then the sommelier were very happy to come over and let us try a couple of options. We were all very happy with our wine selection. Next was the food! I had read about trying a few items, so we were sure to order them. Our final order was the Burrata Tart, Amberjack, Tostada and Blue Prawns. And we shared 2 main items, the Chicken and the Bucatini. The Burrata and the Amberjack were to die for! Prawns and Tostada were great as well. We ordered the Chicken dish to share with 4 women along with the Bucatini main and let me tell you that Chicken was AMAZING!! The waitress tended to everyone who came in after us and seated around us without even considering that we, too, wanted service. I had to flag down the bus boy to get her attention, to which avail - she still ignored us until my husband stood up and called her over. That's the first offense. The second - Granted, we were early for our reservation and agreed to wait until the next available but after an hour of waiting while looking at several available tables - we approached the hostess to be told in the most acerbic tone: 'well you're reservation isn't until 1:30 so you'll just have to wait!' \n\nNever again!

Outstanding, fresh food in a noisy environment\n\nI love really well-prepared food, and Otium does not disappoint. Contrary to the style dictators of our time, I do not like eating in places where I cannot talk to my friend at the table, because I can't hear anything. (I constantly complain about this at various super-popular restaurants, and they never listen to me.) We had marvelous homemade falafel, a delicious salad with kale, quinoa, apples, beets and feta cheese, and very attentive, friendly service, but the lunch was not relaxing due to the endlessly pounding, tuneless bass and the din all around us. I was a bit surprised we were not offered any bread during lunch, but we didn't ask. Food was spectacular, unique, delicious and something for everyone despite food allergies and vegetarian limitations. The pork with black rice and the crispy potatoes were especially amazing. the issue is worth being written about. The restaurant is the ideal location for an excellent meal before attending the performances at the Music Center. It is obvious that a lot of the attending public is over 50 yrs old, and therefore NOT fond of LOUD music during dinner. It would be a great gesture of the restaurant to tone it down until 8 pm, after which all the theatre goers are gone, and you can have the loud music for the younger crowd that will be the guests after 8 pm.\nPass on this suggestions, because the music center crowd can afford the pricey restaurant but will NOT return with this onslaught of noise that prevents conversation at the dinner table.

The food and restaurant were amazing. My only and major complaint was with the sales tax practice. All the new restaurants nowadays are adding in an automatic 18% service charge. I get it and I don't have a problem with it. However you should probably put it somewhere on your menu so I know to expect it before the bill arrives. \n\nHowever my major complaint is that the restaurant collects sales tax on the food AND the 18% service charge. In essence, I'm being charged sales tax on the tip that I'm leaving. I've never seen a business charge tax on a service charge before. Does your accountant charge you sales tax to prepare your taxes? Does your mechanic charge you sales tax on the labor portion of the work?

The food was incredible. Hands down. The wine list was sorely lacking. First time I ever turned away two wines in one meal. They simply could not bring out a good wine, seemingly focused more on modest-priced wines offering them large profit margins, but no sommelier could have ever tasted the wines they served us, or they'd have never made the list. The service was inconsistent, and didn't 'get' the timing of when the dishes came out. For an excellent chef and kitchen, with beautiful ambiance, the overall restaurant management still needs some work.

The best choice for lunch or dinner on the new Grand Avenue corridor. I've been to Otium twice and each time was wonderful--albeit very loud. The food is interesting and well prepared, and portions this time were larger than I remembered--a great place to share. There's also a very nice bar and an outdoor patio area that looks like a pleasant place to sit for an evening drink. I'll definitely be back again for lunch or dinner.

The ambiance was noisier than expected. Our waiter's attitude seemed like his dog had just died. I think I didn't receive the drink I ordered but since it took very long for the waiter to check up on us, I drank it anyway. My Friend had no water or tea for a long period. Luckily, the ice had melted by the time we saw our waiter. My friend had called to let them know it was for my birthday and requested a candle, but I guess they forgot. Food was great, dessert was delicious. I came for dinner, I might come for brunch. Not a place I would go out of my way to go back to again.

I love the location, the food is good, the service is ok, but when the place is full of people talking and laughing and yelling at high decibels with stupid hip hop music playing so loudly we couldn't talk, we asked to be moved out of the claustrophobic back room and sit outside. That was better but the banquette cushions have a design problem. The whole banquette is too low and whoever sits there has the table across their chest, like little kids at the big table. Mentioning to the server they said 'yes they know'. Amazing that such a beautifully designed restaurant can't correct such a ridiculous mistake by putting another cushion on top of it for diners comfort. And turn the tired cliche music down, the place docent need it. Makes me consider twice before coming back.

When it's crab season, why would you take this delightful jewel, coat it in a thick, tasteless, crunchy coating, and then bury it in a sandwich with a thick hunk of tomato, etc. If it's soft-she'll crab; celebrate it! Then as a side, why serve petite okra in the same thick, tasteless, crunchy coating as the soft-shelled crab?

I've been to Otium for dinner and lunch many times before and this is the first time the service has been lackluster. Right from the start the hostess was not friendly and seemed too busy to bother with checking us in for our reservation. Even with this recent experience I will still frequent this place because the food outweighs the one negative incident.

While i'm totally ok paying high prices for a great gastronomic experience, I was a bit surprised that after ordering 2 glasses of $25 Champagne, I was STILL charged a $35 corkage for the wine we brought. It was the one thing that took the edge off an otherwise outstanding dinner. My girls loved the Foie Gras Funnel Cake while I enjoyed the Amberjack among other things. Dessert....St. Honore....oh my if you like Hazelnut.\nOne thing they can learn. When you bring a special bottle of wine, never, never take it away from the table to open it. We had a reservation at 5:30, was seated right away. Our server who did not dress like other servers came to us and did not tell us his name, was very focused on dishes he want to recommend instead of taking my order. \nWe expressed that we're under time restraint and he insisted that our food was going to come out of the order he had recommended. We selected one of the dishes he recommended which he did not tell us the price and we later on found out to be $50, we also asked him for bread, which he mentioned cost $5.\nOur entrees took very long time to be served to us, approx. 1 hr, the bread never came after we finished our appetizers which was approx 45 minutes into the meal, I eventually cancelled.\n\nI will continue to goto otium because it's one of my favorite restaurants in LA and the food is amazing. I know this is sort of a hot spot, but it clearly lacks good service from the stand point of getting good information from their menu. We ordered the special chicken (which had to be ordered when we made our reservation) which along with a salad would have been plenty. Our waiter, although nice enough allowed us to over order . We made a reservation for 6PM because we had theater tickets for an 8 PM curtain. Instead of listening to us he dragged the dinner out until we had to get the manager to move the dinner along. Our meal showed up allowing us less than 20 minutes to enjoy our meal( shovel it in was more like it) before we had to make a mad dash to the Music Center. I am sure there are lot's of folks that would enjoy their menu and prices and have plenty of time to cruise through dinner. I/we are not one of them. I will not say the food was bad the experience however, could have been a whole lot better.

The wine from South Africa was exceptional, especially with the Tart! We were surprised the sommelier didn't come back to ask how we liked it, however. \n\nWe would go back for sure - but the noise level is something to take into consideration, especially if you're meeting a friend you haven't seen in some time and want to talk easily, without the background noise. \n\nThe restaurant is gorgeous - love the open kitchen! My visit to Otium was for lunch, party of 3. Reservation was at 1:30 and we were seated early, which I appreciated very much. While the food was great, the service was not and I'm not talking about our server, who tried his best. To start we ordered 4 dishes thinking that if we were hungry we could order more later. I had lunch at Otium about a week ago. While the food was very good, I felt like I haven't experienced Otium's full menu. So I return for dinner, and it does not disappoint. We ordered a number of small plates to share- the octopus with Mole sauce and the curried cauliflower are my favorites. They do have a few full size entrees, we had the roasted chicken which is huge and tasty! I also like their cocktails- I ordered a sake concoction that reminds me of a Pisco Sour. They also have great deserts, a bit too rich for me, but my dining companions seemed very pleased with what they ordered. Overall, Otium is a serious restaurant for those who are craving for a sumptuous dinning experience. My only reservation with Otium is once again the acoustics- its way too loud for intimate conversations - meaning it's not exactly the best option for a romantic dinner. That's too bad, cause with its delicious food and interesting setting (next to the BROAD museum's olive garden), it really should be !!!

A friend visiting LA was going to visit the BROAD museum, so Otium is the perfect spot for us to meet for lunch. I must admit, the reservation was surprisingly easy, I was able to get the time only one day in advance - a rare benefit for a restaurant of this level. The lunch menu is not huge but has a wide range of choices from sushi to burgers to salad to pasta dishes. The three of us ordered a number of small dishes to share and I must say that they are all delicious and prepared 'inventively'. That said, the style of cooking is a bit on the fussy side, I personally prefer more farm to table style. However, my friends are extremely impressed. A couple of reservations- although the service (our waiter) is generally very good, our waiter was unsure if the one of the dish (steak) my friend ordered was sold out??? After coming back to us three times to give us three different answers about the dish availability, my friend finally gave up and settle for penne pasta! !! Another thing is the acoustics is very loud, so if you want a romantic dinner (or intimate conversation) this is not the place. However, for a business lunch or a meal to impress, this is perfect. I made another reservation for dinner next week, so I am definitely going back, but I do not plan order steak.

Don't go hungry to Otium! The menu is a bit odd and while items sound good the portion sizes are very small - which the waiter did say in explaining the menu; some items are larger, some smaller. Well, they are all small. We ordered the Hamachi and were told there were about 5 pieces and we all leaned forward to look into the bowl to find the fish! $15 for tasteless fish! The special of the day was a brisket with tiny biscuits. best part was the side bowl of jam for the Tiny few biscuits. And the meat was fatty. I think the components are mostly fine but they just do not come together to make a meal course worthwhile. Will never recommend or return.

I had high expectations, having been to Otium for the prix fixe tasting night before opening. The food that night was amazing. However, my sister was in town from SF this past weekend and I thought this would be a fun experience before going to MOCA and a Disney Hall concert. Wrong! Although the waiter was very conscientious to be certain we enjoyed the wine he recommended, I asked him to leave the spicy sauce off the plate, as I'm not able to eat spicy food. Instead, he delivered my menu selection with the plated sauce that I had told him I didn't want. The corned beef was overcooked and I left half of my dish unfinished. In addition, if a dinner wants a piece of bread, it's ciabatta for $5.00. It seemed that the chef is trying way to hard to think up different combinations of ingredients and some don't work, as was the case in both items we ordered and consequently the food definitely missed the mark. Not a good experience that cost $100 for lunch!

As a frequent visitor to the Grand Avenue cultural treasures , I am constantly disappointed by the pre- show restaurants in walking distance. Thank you , Otium, for coming to this gourmet wasteland. Otium, next to the Uber cool Broad, offers creative , balanced dishes that are presented with elan. The hamachi with its thick slices of yellow tail ,delicately paired with sour tomatoes , is the perfect starter. The duck is done to perfection, not easy with duck , and paired with crisp , tart Asian pear. The bucatini carbonara with clam and pancetta is a light dish, devoid of any glueyness usually associated with carbonara. The service is good and the wine list is comprehensive , although a little meager for single glasses. More lighting is required in the back area of the space so menus can be read without flashlights but I was assured that this was being remedied.

Food was good, but the waiter tries to up sell and makes you order more than you actually want. This did not make me happy, but since you don't know portion sizes you trust him when he says you will need more food. Not happy with this approach to make you up the bill.

The food was delicious, no doubt. But, for the price, we expect better service in terms of waiting time. It took us over 2 hours for brunch, and we only ordered 3 things. Food came very slowly.

My friend is very hard of hearing, and her hearing aids amplify any ambient sound, so the music with continual thumping of beats was impossible for her to deal with. After we let the waitress know we could not stay if the sound was not turned down, they were very accommodating and lowered it quite a bit. But in general, I rate the ambiance 'fair' because of the noise level, which I do not like either.

A M A Z I N G!! Food was extraordinary!! I went on Sunday 7/9 and I still can't stop thinking about it. Service was fantastic. Price point is high, so I may only be able to go once or twice a year but I would definitely come back and hang on the patio in the summer.

The food is good a bit over prized the portions are very small. The corkage fee per bottle is $35.00 a bit much.

Tim Hollingsworth is doing a great job. I have been in Italy many times, but Tim's pasta was the best I've ever had. Crab sandwich: Oh my goddess, twas amazing! Had lunch, now want to go back for dinner.

The restaurant was one of the loudest I have ever been in, and I've been to lots of LA restaurants. I almost laughed at how loud it was--just a challenge to have a comfortable unwinding experience or conversation. Most disappointing was the food. i had the hamachi, which is usually such a beautifully presented dish--the fish very clean (no skin), very thinly sliced, artfully presented. No--this hamachi was in little chunks with much of the silver skin still on. It was fresh and wholesome--just looked more like sardines and a small portion. More rustic? But a disappointment. My friend had the falafel, which salty. Dinky portion--outrageous, really. The worst part, the inedible part, was the hummus that came with it. Again, very small portion, but the salt overload was incredible. It actually wasn't just salty--it was 'mistake' salty, as in way saltier than a handful of potato chips. All hostesses and servers were nice. Tip of 18% was automatically added--I always tip, so had no complaints on that.

Overall it was great, this is my third time you get out to them once for dinner once for lunch and now dinner again. The menu is diverse and everything tastes amazing. Noise level is a bit too loud there are no elements to dampen the sound that would be nice

I read a lot of reviews saying that it's loud in the restaurant. I assumed they were talking about dinner time. We came in for 11:30am brunch, and it was extremely loud. Other than that, no complaints. Excellent service. Great food.

We ordered the prawns, lamb, and spaghetti, for dinner. Exquisite tasting food, the only thing is that the noise level inside is quite loud, between the music and other guests which were talking loudly to be heard. The service was perfect, also. We dined here because we had tickets to the Disney Concert Hall, and our server made a note of that in order to expedite our food and get our check ASAP. We all appreciated their consideration and loved our meal. This restaurant adjacent to the Broad and one block away from the Disney Concert Hall. Perfect walking distance.

Chef Tim Hollingsworth and his staff are doing an outstanding job of coming up with new twists on old favorites. The dishes, even the descriptions themselves, are intriguing but not weird. The combinations work well together. Our waiter Justin was helpful, knowledgeable and experienced. Our experience was relaxed, but deliciously put forth. The airy feel of the restaurant, the bar and the counter where diners can watch prep make this a memorable meal. They aren't giving away the food, but for what you get, it's a value.

Food was amazing. The tastes were so eclectic and each dish that came out was great. The service was superb as well. Wish it was a bit quieter though

Most everything about Otium is great, but the noise level prevents normal conversation. I regard lunch as a social occasion, not a shouting match.
