Dined last year around same time, and experience and food has only gotten better (and it was superb in 2016).\nGreat staff, and one of the most delicious meals I've had in quite some time. Chef even dealt (deliciously) with our dining restrictions. Will dine here every time I'm in LA.

The restaurant is exciting to look at, lively and energetic and the surrounding buildings are a delight to walk through. The staff, for the most part, were warm and friendly if lacking some basic service points (asking for a second round of drinks in the bar, slow to remove unnecessary plates, flatware and glassware during the meal. The problem here is the menu and the food. I understand the pricing (though I don't like it) as the cost of building, renovating and maintaining a property of that size must be exorbitant. The three of us dine-out more than we dine at home. It was hard to find items in each category that were 'must haves' or even 'looking forward to having'. In some cases, the menu item seemed interesting enough but the preparation and combination of ingredients were distracting. Though not our normal practice, we found ourselves opting for more basic dishes - scallops, and halibut and one friend ordered boar. The boar presentation was good and the dish was deemed 'pretty good' though would not order again. The scallops were deemed 'pretty ordinary' and the halibut was deemed 'should have sent this dry, inedible piece of fish back'.\n\nThe desserts were good - though the brownie was far more like a devil's food cake than an actual brownie. \n\nGiven the lackluster menu, execution and high prices, I doubt we'd return. Given the physical attributes of the space, a more exciting menu with reasonable prices and execution that met if not exceeded expectations, we probably would.

Overall, I thought the place has an awesome atmosphere, but there seemed to be an attitude with the wait staff. We had the Chicken pot pie which was very good as was the avocado salad which was a spin on the wedge salad. Last we had the duck. Duck was prepared with Thai sides and was essentially a Thai dish (which we expected) BUT the flavors totally overpowered the meat, which should have been the focus of the dish. Not balanced. Waiter tried to up sale us and was not pleasant overall. While he was efficient in his serving, it was his attitude. Many more options at this price level are better but the atmosphere is wonderful, no doubt.

Their strawberry brioche donut still haunts me it was so good. We ended up getting two. Very light and not too sweet. Great service. They give you a claim check for you doggie bag (that was a little over the top for me for brunch). The food was very good, but didn't really see any healthy options. Definitely an indulgence for brunch. No oatmeal or egg white blahdeblah if you're watching what you eat.

Great experience for our 1st time at Redbird. Brunch was fantastic. Had a DIY Mimosa, and my hubs had an awesome Manhattan (presentation was great-lowball glass was FROZEN half way to create a huge ice cube-and the bourbon was floated on top). Food was delish-something for everyone. (especially the fried egg sandwich) Can't wait to go back for dinner...special shout out to Jessica who gave us great table service (friendly and made us feel like VIP's). While you're there, ask the manager for a peak of their space Vibiana next door...a HISTORIC building in DTLA, that was a Cathedral and the former parish for the Archdiocese of LA. Built in the 1800's. It's so beautiful.

We were in LA for business and were staying downtown, so we thought somewhere local would be nice. We were in for a real treat, beyond what we had expected. The menu is full of great choices, and not squeezed into a standard starters, mains, finishes, format. I indulged and added truffles and foie gras to my hangar steak and it was fantastic. They also found a nice glass of wine to pair with it. The atmosphere is lively without being noisy. Definitely worth a visit - one of the best places we dined at in a cross-California trip.

We enjoyed our meal but for the price you expect the food to be sensational and it wasn't. The food was very good but nothing that blew us away. They also called to confirm our reservation and asked why we were dining there. I told them it was for our anniversary and that we'd been married at the Vibiana and wanted to come back to celebrate. They didn't make an acknowledgment of that. Not even a happy anniversary which is fine but don't ask why we are coming if you aren't going to even mention it once we are there.

This is my second time at REdbird and it didn't disappoint. The food is eclectic and unique and for a menu that also includes sides with a dinner menu - I sometimes think that is because the dinner portion is modest - not here - I had the boar and needed to take some home because I couldn't finish.\nOnly true issue is that there was a long gap between appetizer and entree - in fact looking around the dining room there was no food coming out of the kitchen for what seemed like a good 1/2 hour. We were profusely apologized to and told that the kitchen got backed up with a private party - not the best excuse (You are second to our preferred private guests). But they did comp our dessert as acknowledgement - which is appreciated. Not an inexpensive meal but worthy.

Second time eating there. Good food, competent service. Main complaint: show up on time for reservation, sent to wait 15 minutes in the bar. This happened both times and appears to be standard procedure. We could see an open table in the restaurant from the bar while we waited, not drinking. If I wanted a pre-dinner cocktail, I would show up ahead of my reservation time to drink. I don't appreciate this treatment, and I won't be back. There are too many other good dining options where the customer is treated with respect, not as a vehicle to drive up liquor sales.

This was our first visit to Redbird and what a lovely surprise. It is located in downtown LA in a historical landmark. The interior is beautiful with dining in a calm, romantic courtyard, but the inside seating is also appealing. Unlike so many restaurants today, we could actually have a conversation without shouting. The service was excellent and friendly, and the appetizers and main courses were delicious. The only disappointment of the evening was dessert____the chocolate mousse bar was not very satisfying. The cappuccino was perfect.

We went ar night and the food was excellent. But the service was bad enough to warrant a complaint. We had hot water, and the cup had specks of dark things,so we asked for a new cup but the bus boy said the water was clean and 'it's fine!' and walked away. Then I said ok, later poured more hot water from coffee press and found more coffee specks. Then bus boy (older Latino guy) finally took it and changed it unapologetically. Asked for regular tap water which came after 2nd ask. Later in the night we had empty water glasses, and asked again, the waiter pour only 2 out of 4 glasses, until we asked him to come back and filled the other two glasses. Weird and totally mismatched with the quality food we had.

Beautiful building, arrived for our reservation and was put into a little corner beside the kitchen. Asked to be moved to the actual Resturant side. After being reseated the evening was better. Our waiter was quite overbearing. She suggested a dish that I chose which was very good, but was enough to feed 4 people. She also suggested side dishes to go with this! A little ridiculous! The Resturant was very nice, but the conditions that we were put into made the evening less enjoyable.

Working on the Gold 101, hadn't been to Redbird yet. Three of us went on a weeknight, 7pm. The space was beautiful indeed. But the rest of the evening was meh. Service was inattentive for a restaurant of this caliber; we waited a long time to get our order in and rarely saw our waiter after that. Our food was good but not great: tofu was not exciting, pork rack was very good but the spaetzle base was overcooked to crunchiness, duck was good but not exceptional. The cost was high, especially the wine. Checked off.

Good food, very good service, disproportionate cost for both. \n\nSaturday night catch up dinner with an old friend. After having made reservations weeks prior, the hostess attempted to seat us in the 'lobby' area. A simple polite request moved us to the main room. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu options, gave a few guiding suggestions, and was cheerfully professional without ever being annoyingly cheerful. \n\nWhat we ordered...\nStarters:\nHamachi $18 - perfect, highly recommend \nBurrata with Asian pear $18 - SUPER salty, big miss \nAvocado salad $18 - pleasant, not life changing\n\nNot really sure how the salads could possibly be the same price as the hamachi. \n\nMain courses: (these are not huge plates)\nScallops $35 - 4 small well cooked. Texture was right, otherwise bland. Cost to value MASSIVE miss. \nGnocchi with rabbit $32 - very good. \nDuck $38 - cooked perfectly. Recommend. \n\nOne round of specialty cocktails for 3\nOne round of dirty vodka martinis for 2. HARD PASS on the dirty martinis. After initially believing they mistakenly made them with gin, there was some discussion about the reason for the non standard taste. Swearing there was no gin or even dry vermouth in them, we were sold a line about the olives they use. We weren't really on board, but drank and paid for them regardless. \n\nAfter everything was said and done, we ended up dropping about $100 each... Which would be fine if everything was perfect, but it was not

BTW, I recommend you go there on a Thursday night and pay the iconic Edison Bar a visit after dinner to catch some live music. It's next door and would make for a very memorable date. My group of friends and husband came here for DineLA and was not disappointed! From the minute we walked into the restaurant, we were greeted by a very nice hostess who led us back to a larger dining area. The decor was beautiful, and we were welcomed with complimentary aperitifs and bread puffs. The cheesy puffs were so, so divine! I am not a huge carb person, but I had 3 or 4 of these! Most of our party went with the DineLA menu, which was absolutely deliciously. The halibut was my personal favorite embedded with a light citrusy flavor. The short ribs were solid, although the green pesto sauce was a tiny bit salty. The cocktails and deserts were all magnificent. The service was excellent and our waiter kept our drinks filled throughout the whole night. All in all, a very successful dinner get together enhanced by a wonderful meal!

It was our first time at Red Bird. Friends had recommended. The setting is so interesting and historical-don't forget to look up when you're in the front of the restaurant. I would have been happy to settle down in the couches and sample from the menu-but we had reservations. We started at the bar with a very attentive tender and eventually removed to our seats. We enjoyed a good range of the menu: squid pasta, Thai crab soup and chicken liver mousse to start. Two of us had the soup and agreed it was fantastic-spicy but balanced with the coconut milk and other spices. For entrees, we had a range from tofu to pork to duck. We heartily enjoyed all of it. And finished with the mousse and brownies from the set menu. SO delicious! The service was attentive and friendly. But really, the setting is just fantastic; you must go.

We met our friends for a Sunday Brunch and had a lovely time. Brunch selections were unique and prepared well (Liberty Duck Confit, Biscuit and Gravy, Baked Eggs), cocktails were elegantly flowered (Grace's Cup ...beautiful) and the trio of dessert was pretty special (financier, p/j doughnut, chocolate chip tea cake). We ordered coffee and they gave us a silver pot of coffee for us to enjoy!! Server Dylan was great! We were not rushed and felt that Redbird really valued our presence. \n\nAfter dessert, Ben, the manager, gave us a bit of history and a tour of the deconstructed St. Vibiana. We had a 12 noon reservation, we got there 10 minutes late due to traffic, it was raining hard. The hostess gave us a table in what appeared to be the coffee area, not the main dining room. I wanted the complete experience so I asked her to sit us in the main dining room and she responded ' I did not know you had a preference.' She did not give us a choice when we walked in. We were casually dressed, we had leather shoes on and our jeans were not ripped. While having our awesome lunch, that same hostess started seating people in the most awful outfits in the main dining room. It made me wonder. \n\nNow, the service. OUTSTANDING!!!! All of the servers and the busboys were super attentive. We never had to ask for a refill, they just showed up. One of the servers noticed that my daughter needed directions to the restroom, he asked to show her where it was and he was not even our waiter! I wish I got his name, that was a small gesture that made a huge impact to our dining experience (he was the only African American server at the time.) This gesture showed us that the entire staff was paying attention to all of the diners and not just to the tables assigned to them. AMAZING!!! We will definitely come back. We are actually planning to take my daughter and her friends there for her birthday celebration in February. \n\nFood was FABULOUS! Everything we had was delicious. My husband ordered a half chicken, AMAZING, he had a half chicken at Pok Pok the night before and he said that you can't compare the two. Redbird's half chicken is head and shoulders and torso above that of Pok Pok. While I understand the restaurants are not in the same league, the taste of the food should always be delicious but in different ways. Thank you. Great experience.

I go to Redbird whenever I can and it never disappoints. This time my friend and I both had the 'Dine LA' dinner menu and it was superb and terrific value. I was thrilled to see skate on the menu as it's one of my favorites and it was sublime; the bavette of beef was a mixture of flavors that all just complemented each other, rather like umami and lastly the brownie sundae which I could savor due to it being gluten free. As a celiac, I am forever grateful that all the staff here completely understand my issues and take the greatest care to accommodate them. That the menu (starting with the little cheese rolls) is so full of delicious GF options is really a testament to the skills of Neal Fraser that he never lets a lack of gluten interfere with fantastic food.

Had heard lots of good things about Redbird and decided to check it out during Dine L.A. There were three of us in the party so we had an opportunity to sample almost everything on the Dine L.A. menu. Food was fantastic. Service was friendly. It was a rainy evening so the bar scene wasn't too busy. (We were seated in the front of the restaurant, not the patio but I was fine with that.) I would definitely like to come back and try more of their menu. Valet out front was $12.

We tried the brunch at Redbird for the first time and it was definitely a winner! We ordered a few different dishes: the grits, fried egg sandwich, and the peanut butter and jelly donut and they were all tasty! The dining room is lovely and bright and the service was very sharp. \n\nThe cocktails are inventive and definitely worth sampling! This is a great choice for a special occasion or just a chance to enjoy a good meal!

The size was petite....not much of either. The scallops were great. Our dessert was a brownie sundae. It was really good. Redbird is a drive for us, but we would try it again. Went for brunch on Sunday. Table availability was easy. There is valet parking available for $12 but a lot across the street was a great deal for $7 dollars/day. Courtyard seating area is light and airy. Would recommend outside seating. Standard breakfast fare with a pre fixe option for restaurant week. Great French press and ice coffee. Niçoise salad was excellent as were biscuits and gravy. The PBJ donut was forgettable. The table next to ours had a great looking waffle that they were raving about. All in all - highly recommend for a downtown brunch especially prior to a matinee show or museum (walking distance to Disney hall, Broad, D. Chandler, Ahmanson)

Chose Red Bird based on location, gluten-free options and great reviews. It did not disappoint. The food was FANTASTIC and we enjoyed every unique dish we had including the dessert. Unfortunately, the service was not up to par at the beginning of the evening. We were ignored for probably 15 -20 minutes before our order was even taken. That is too long. Probably mid-meal, the server was a little more attentive.\n\nWe had the following food items and LOVED every bit of it:\n\nPumpkin Soup, Swordfish, Duck, Pototoes and Dessert: Yuzu Saboyan and Kabocha Bavarais!\n\nThey were having a private holiday party on the premises so I did not have an opportunity to look around the property and courtyard. Sommelier was very snooty. When server offered our party the happy hour menu in the dinning room , by mistake, the Sommelier accused us of trying to pull a fast one. When we told him that it was offered by the server and not requested by our table , he walked away and did not apologize for his accusation. The server came back and told us he cancelled the order and offered no apologies either. We did not ask for the happy hour menu , but in a restaurant like Redbird, you don't insult your guests and expect them to return. We spent over $500 and will not be returning. There are many other restaurants in LA that are just as good , but know how to treat returning guests We know this review will fall on deaf ears

The couple of people who we think are part of the staff didn't even bother asking where was the problem. We have never done this before but we decided to leave. Paired perfectly with the hazelnuts and not overly seasoned. A really, really good cut of meat. Our entrees came out a little later than expected and they were nice enough to comp them for us! Forgive me, father, for I have sinned... the food porn coming out of Redbird, that restaurant residing in a former church, is just off the charts. The cocktails were amazeballs, pasta made fresh in-house daily, and I'm currently thinking dirty thoughts about Redbird as I type this.\n\nAn utterly universe-shattering paradigm shift has occurred with an ingredient of which, previously, I thought I was so intimately acquainted. PORK. My god, the pork. How in the earthly f-ck did you do what you did with that cut of pig?\n\nPersonally, I think it says a lot when pork outshines a bone-in ribeye cooked to perfection. Don't skip the rack of Red Wattle Pork. You'll be doing yourself a disservice.\n\nTake in the sights while you're there. What they've done with the space, converting it from an old church, makes for a one-of-a-kind dining experience.

This was my second time at Redbird. Everyone in my party appreciates fine dining and is reasonably adventurous when it comes to food, but everyone agreed that many dishes on the menu contained something that we had never heard of, or simply couldn't bring ourselves to eat (chicken hearts, for example). That said, we all found something delicious to enjoy -- duck, filet mignon, lamb chops. Great wine list, amazing space, wonderful hostesses, aloof waiter. All in all, a good experience and exciting addition to Downtown LA in the rectory of the old St. Viviana's Cathedral.

Cocktails are always good here and the bar is so comfortable...even for dining. Service was excellent and the cadence of courses was perfect. The amuse 'booze' was a nice touch. The apps and small plates were delicious and good portion sized. The entrees portion sizes were very large but I can see why given the pricing i.e., they probably want to make you feel justified for spending $44 for a plate of pork. Get the tofu. It was delicious. Now for the mediocre....the so called 'gougeres' was yuck. You could taste the flour and it was so dense. They really need to get a new recipe...or try making pao de quijo because I think that's what they're trying to go for by using tapioca flour in their gougeres. Last thing that was not so good was the pork. It was really tough. It was cooked medium, per the chef's recommendation, but something went wrong. It was chewy...not inedible but not pleasant. They really should slow cook the pork for a better result.

I selected this restaurant for a downtown business dinner after my original choice was cancelled due to a private event. I didn't do much research beforehand and was so pleasantly surprised! Located in an old catholic cathedral, the space has been redone. The juxtaposition of old and modern was stunning. The retractable ceiling was super cool, but even on a chilly night, it was warm and cozy inside. While the restaurant was lively, the volume was still quite controlled and easy to have a conversation. In my opinion, the food took a back row seat to the ambiance, but only because it was such a spectacular space. We enjoyed the braised octopus and crudo fish for an appetizer as well as the squash salad. We shared the deckle of pork for our main. The sommelier recommended a French Sancerre Red which was perfect for the combination of food. I can't wait to go back with my husband on our next date night!

Neal Fraser does it again! It was pure genius to create a restaurant within the rectory of St. Vibiana's church., keeping much of the original aesthetic in the clean design of this restaurant. Service was fantastic (the evening started with an amuse bouche compliments of the chef) but heed my warning: when the server tells you their appetizers are 'very small plates' don't believe them! Their portions are gigantic. I started with the Pozole and my boyfriend had the avocado salad. By the time my dinner arrived (Pork Wattle) I was able to take only two bites (heavenly!) and then had to ask them to box it up for me. I had made a dinner reservation for 8pm. We arrived at 8:10 and were told our table would be ready shortly. We sat ourselves at the (lovely) bar for a cocktail while we waited. After 30 minutes and no concrete estimate from the hostess, we were still at the bar, so we ordered a few appetizers (the bone marrow with kimchi combination was notably great). The manager finally came over at 9pm to apologize and share that he was comping our appetizers for the inconvenience. We were seated a few minutes later, as soon as a four top became available. The manager followed up multiple times after we were seated, and even sent over a few more dishes. It was an unfortunate situation that was handled well thanks to good, attentive management. \n\nWaiting aside, the food and drinks were great. The chicken pot pie (made with chicken heart) was fantastic, the melon appetizer was quite tasty, and the cocktails were delicious and inventive. We made early Sunday dinner reservations at 5pm for 4 people, and the staff was incredibly courteous as we waited at the bar for everyone to arrive. The bartender was friendly and knowledgeable - she even made a non-alcoholic 'bartender's choice' drink for one of our friends who doesn't drink, and it was creative and delicious! That started our evening off wonderfully, and then we were escorted to our table on the patio. Our waitress walked us through the menu, and was always attentive but not intrusive as we caught up with each other. We ordered 4 'sharing' plates, plus entrees (duck and scallops were the winners) and desserts. Everything we ate was delicious - highlights were all of the pasta starters, the scallops, and the chocolate dessert. I'm still craving the smoky flavor of the bananas foster ice cream! We felt well-taken care of throughout the meal, and can't wait to go back.

My third visit. The bar had a warm cocktail - hot buttered rum - heavenly, no really good. On to dinner where the disappointment began. The crab soup had been over done with fish sauce - super salty. Sent it back and asked for the mushroom soup. Way better, well seasoned and delicious although the mushrooms were a bit grandular. Table had tartare that was liked. I had the duck. Looked perfect, however the small slices were dry. Pink but dry and no sauce in sight. Swordfish was cooked perfectly but the surrounding dish didn't seem to compliment . Dessert was fine. Guess I'll stick to the chick pot pie next time.

Jason, our server was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu items and the wine list.

...fly by this great new restaurant located adjacent Sr. Vibiana church on 2nd and Main. At five 'o clock, stylish people were at the bar savoring its signature drinks. As the canvas roof rolled back on LA, the tables quickly began to fill. We were lucky that the sommelier, Ben, was free to help us pick a Spanish wine from a small winery and advise us about a California grower who was making available Albariño for locavores. Before we tested that the wine, however, our energetic waiter offered an unsual, liquid amuse bouche. This aperitif, concocted by the bartender, proved enticing. We over-ordered including the roasted pork, which would easily have served two brawny men and was rather dry. More memorable was the remarkable sea bass with squid ink sauce that was somehow meaty. The Tai crudo proved savory; the little gem salad wasn't little at all. We like this place a lot. Next time, we'll order more sparingly.

My wife and i came here to celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary. i noted this in our reservation and the staff was aware of our occasion and made it special. The staff members who served us all wished us a Happy Anniversary. The restaurant also comped our dessert and gave us a glass of sparkling wine which was a perfect post dinner drink. \nAs for the restaurant, i would come back just to come back. the food was excellent and the portions were just right. we each had one small dish and one appetizer which proved to be enough food. I had the pork ragu and the chicken pot pie-both very tasty. My wife had the bone marrow and crab soup which she really enjoyed. The desserts and drinks were also very good and accentuated a perfect meal. \nI noticed the staff was very attentive in taking care of diners. Managers were walking the floor and i even noticed Chef Neal Fraser walk through the room and give the room a glance. Redbird does an architectural gem like Vibiana Cathedral justice with its high quality.

Came her with a friend. One delicious appetizer dish, the Thai crab soup. The pasta dishes are greasy and salty. We could not finish them after two bites. Most menu items range from 40 to 98 $ . They also charge a 3% for their employees health insurance. At the menu prices they charge they should be able to afford their employees health insurance, plus they do not have to pay income tax on the 3% surcharge as their employees health insurance cost is deductible. Service was good, food horribly priced and horribly salty, very very noisy. Very hip ambiance though.

I understand the food/service are of utmost priority for most people when deciding where to dine but this restaurant is stunning, so even if the food was not quite as fantastic as it was, I would still return. It's just gorgeous in there! \nThe food is unique and everything we ordered was delicious. I ordered a pork entrée which could have fed 2-3 people, so keep in mind that as you progress down the menu, the portions are larger. Our server was a real standout as well. Unfortunately, I can't remember her name but she was very warm, attentive and really on her game.\nI really want to return and just sit at the gorgeous bar--and order a cocktail and a few plates some evening. Very well-prepared food in an attractive, and interesting, setting just east of Bunker Hill. The amuse-booze at the beginning is always fun, even if the rolls served in a bag are just a little too precious. The wine list contained mostly unknown wines, making it a challenge to select one if you are not on an expense account, but our choice turned out to be very good, and not bad value. The crap soup was spicy with a coconut flavor that was not at all cloying. All of the main courses were delicious as well. Fried tidbits of black olive sprinkled on top of the swordfish were fitting to the Greek-inspired dish and delicious. The only drawback is that the staff makes no effort to honor requests for specific tables even after they confirm a reservation and agree to reserve a specific table.

Redbird was a bit inconsistent when first opened and it seemed that presentation was highlighted over substance and flavors. It was always good and a favorite of mine but sometimes a little better than others. Those days are gone! Have now had two recent meals at Redbird and Neal Fraser and wife Amy could not be doing a better job. Kudos, kudos, kudos!\n\nNeal continues with his creative preparations and presentations. However, he's got it down with his flavors! The food is not only creative and beautiful to look at but seems to have a 'soul' that it did not have when first opened. The smaller dishes are rich, creative and full of flavor. The large protein plates are among the best in town. The Veal Fraser, if available, is a must. The pork loin is among the best dish in town and the steaks are better (for real) than most steak specialty houses.\n\nRedbird's for real. Not to be missed. By the way, the staff is very capable, friendly and knowledgeable. This is a must for downtown eating and worth the drive.

This was walking distance from our hotel in downtown LA and came as a highly recommended restaurant from a friend who lives in LA. The food was wonderful - lamb belly TDF! My only complaint is that we were seated in what felt like the bar. The bar with counter seating was in the same room along with couches for folks sipping drinks. Our rable was along the wall of perhaps 6 tables. The 'dining room' was obviously in the next room. Our seats were OK, but I'm not a fan of banquettes, where one person stares at the wall. We made reservations weeks ago, so I can't blame our seating on a last minute arrival. We saw people arrive after us (two tops, included) who were shown seats in the dining room....don't know how the selection was made. But food was good. Next time I would ask for a table in the dining room.

Came here with my Dad - he had heard about Redbird and wanted to check it out. The space is beautiful! We were disappointed that the rooftop was not open, but it was very hot outside and we were told it would be too hard to keep the dining room cool. Despite this, still had a great experience. We shared a few starters and smaller plates: shishito peppers with quinoa which included a generous portion of peppers -which to me, go a long way. I would have been happy with 3 or 4 of these - maybe they are a better idea to order if you have a larger group? The peppers were tasty and had a nice spicy kick. I'm not quite sure what the point of the quinoa was? I was expecting the peppers to be sitting on a mound of quinoa, but instead the quinoa seeds were sprinkled on top of the peppers. I love quinoa, but the small flecks didn't really add anything to the dish. We also had the snapper crudo which was fabulous. The fish was obviously great quality and very nicely seasoned. Next came the grilled octopus which was very tender and tasty, albeit I thought the dish was a little salty. Then we had the goat pasta with egg. I was a little hesitant to try this, because I've never had goat - but our server said it was delicious and she was spot on! I think this was our fav dish. We finished off with a dessert with Harry's Berries which was very nice, but not spectacular. After dinner we asked for a tour and the staff graciously complied. We were able to see the inside of the chapel and the patio outside which is now used for events. Overall a nice evening!

This was our second time enjoying RedBird. The first time, we were in the front room. The painted beams overhead add substance and elegance to the dining experience. The food, of course, is fabulous! This time, we met friends visiting LA and had lunch in the 'outdoor' room - not really outdoors, but it feels that way. They arranged for us to have a corner, which facilitated having a little intimacy in our conversations. Both occasions remind me of the history and memories the place itself holds. One can imagine when Vibiana bustled with religious energy. Now, the place itself serves as a dignified backdrop to time spent dining slowly. We'll come back - this is a restaurant that deserves widespread support.

The food was amazing as always. Can't say enough good things about the food. The octopus salad was perfect. However the wine pours are so weak...they are small and I was left feeling ripped off and wanting more. I was so disappointed when my wine pour consisted of the last bit of wine in the bottle...and with no apology from the maitre d. who, by the way just smirked at me and walked off after giving me a bottom of the wine bottle short pour. Ugh! I would only order cocktails here. Btw the cocktails are fabulous!

I guess this restaurant has been a long time coming. The interior has been gracefully overlaid what seems to be the cardinal's rectory - his private quarters in the Vibiana cathedral. The hand-painted beams are tastefully lit and one gets the sense of eating in a very exclusive sort of place. The menu is fit for foodies. Since they had bbq'd tofu as an entree, I couldn't resist - and it was fabulous. All the entrees were very gourmet - which we both love. At the end of the dinner, they came over and asked if we wanted the shuttle to Disney, which was where we were doing, but hadn't even thought to ask if the restaurant was on the shuttle route. It was a touch of service that really made an impression. We'll definitely be back.

We do realize that New Years Eve dinner can be problematic, however, our experience at Redbird reached new lows. When first seeing the menu, we saw that it was very 'shellfish heavy'. Two of the members of our party cannot eat shellfish, and we were assured, when we made the reservation, that substitutions would be gladly made. Sadly this turned out not to be the case, as what we were told before the evening, turned out not to be the case at dinner. When the food did began to arrive, we found that one course was as inedible as the next. The soup had such an overpowering taste of lemongrass, that no one could eat a bite. The Gnocchi with black truffles came out soggy, and totally devoid of any flavor at all. The steak was incredibily salty, (this coming from someone who salts everything). It came with a sauce made up in part with snails. We were assured by our waiter that we could be served the steak without the sauce, but when it arrived at our table, the meat was covered in the sauce. The waiter acknowledged the mistake, but no effort was made to take the dishes back and fix the mistake. As a matter of fact, I think that that was the last time we saw our waiter until he brought us the check. \nThe only partial saving grace was that we were charged only for our wine, which, in fact was the only thing at that meal any of us could ingest. \nWe were going to see a show right after dinner, so sadly, we were not even able to drive through In-N-Out. Needless to say, we will not be returning to Redbird.

Food was great. The tagliatelle was a little salty for me, but I don't like a lot of salt in my food. The chicken pot pie was delicious, and I loved the presentation. The ambiance was gorgeous, but we did have a little issue with a few flies around us since the windows and doors were open. The server was wonderful except he disappeared at the end of the meal, but another server was there willing to assist, so it worked out ok.

Ate an early Friday evening dinner before a show so were close to first seating. Got delayed in traffic by 20 minutes so we called and hostess told us not to sweat it. The menu and wine list had lots of choices inspired from around the world. The menu was organized nicely in columns so we could gauge amount of food we were ordering. (We shared everything). The sous-vide duck was fantastic as was the venison. A nice bag of housemade breads and a cold spiced wine amuse bouche was a great start to the evening. We were seated right at the entrance doorway next to a large party which made it difficult to have a conversation at the table . Next we would request a table anywhere else in the restaurant.

We were looking for new places to eat before shows at Disney Hall, and came upon Redbird. First time visit there. Read all of the reviews, which were generally pretty good. Our experience exceeded our expectations. The room (I think it's a covered patio) was beautiful. It was early so our table for 2 was very comfortable. But I can imagine if it's really crowded, that it would seem a little tight. (There are lots of great tables for 6 people, including a couple plank tables by the fire which looked like a cool spot to have dinner with friends.) Overall, the food was fantastic. The bread and butter are amazing (I know it's weird to mention this first, but the small rolls were so chewy and tasty; and the butter was delectably rich and salted). The foie gras was particularly inventive. The pork was really delicious - so many textures - nut crunch, spaetzle chew, juicy pork, and more. Less effective: BBQ tofu was just okay, and the walnut cake dessert was dry. Service was great (they knew we had a show to catch and paced perfectly). Wine was a little expensive ($18/glass). With 4 diners, probably better to bring a nice bottle from home and pay the corkage ($35). My wife and I agreed that we would come back to this place. (Parking is hard to find in that part of downtown, and the valet is $12.)

The food, the space, the bar...everything was beautiful. My only complaint was that we waited a little while at the table before our server came over to take drink orders, and getting her attention through dinner service was a little challenging. That being said, I would absolutely recommend for a lovely dining experience in a gorgeous space with gorgeous food.

We were really disappointed by our meal at Redbird. We ordered two side orders, both of which were forgotten. After asking our server where they were, one came halfway through the course (fine) but the second came after we'd finished eating which was useless. Plus the chicken salad came without any chicken (a key ingredient you would think!) and none of the staff realised until we pointed it out. There wasn't any apology for any of the mistakes. Given the price of the food/drinks and Redbird's reputation we were very disappointed and wouldn't return.

My husband and I went to Redbird to celebrate our anniversary. We sat in the covered outdoor patio area which is gorgeous. The space is a tasteful mix of modern and curated traditional with plants and metallic accents. We could see the bell tower of the adjoining Vibiania space (a former cathedral) which was beautifully lit. I'd say that it was 1/2 full which kept the noise level at a low. \n\nThe staff were REALLY friendly. Like super smiley, super eager which is a little off putting at first, but then I decided to appreciate their enthusiasm. From the water guy, the bread guy, the hostess and the waitress, each person seemed to be happy to serve us- great. We were served an amuse bouche (sp?) to start, a delicious peachy bourbon concoction. \n\nThe food was delicious. We had the octopus salad and the avocado salad to start- both terrific. And the short rib and the duck breast as entrees. The short rib was tender and delicious, just like I like it. My husband enjoyed the duck breast and then proceeded to eat the other half of my short rib. \n\nThe indoor lounge was also gorgeous but as it was a weekday, it was empty. I can image it as a wonderful afterwork spot on a Friday evening. I can also see that it woudl be a beautiful space for brunch. I will be back with girlfriends another time to enjoy the beautiful space.

Redbird has an adventuresome menu with small plates that are fun to share. Located in a historic building in downtown LA, the restaurant exudes the vibe of the new downtown. The outside patio is quite pleasant, especially if the top is open, although a bit noisier due to closeness of tables and a mysterious hum that came and went. The inside room is quite stunning with its patterned ceiling. Service was very attentive without being intrusive. There is a 3% health insurance charge, which I prefer being included in the prices rather than a line item. Do we have the right to refuse it? Not without seeming like a jerk. The only downside to the dining experience were the desserts, which were just okay.

I went for lunch to try the DineLA menu. So smaller selection, but overall good. I wasn't thrilled with the chicken pot pie. Not very much chicken - more heart than thigh - and more gravy than either one. Crust good. Trout with quinoa was very good. Generous portion. I sat at the bar - Tobey was the server. There was a miscommunication I think in the kitchen and the trout came out late. Tobey did follow up on it and he offered to buy my dessert - which I declined. But he took off $$ from the check - $5 - to make up for the error. I thought that was a great gesture - I like when restaurants give servers the latitude to do that. So I was impressed. I will try it again for dinner.

Still impressed with the space itself and well-serving staff. And still felt ho-hum about the meal. Given the reviews and price I guess I expected more 'wow' moments. Dear Redbird Management,\n\nI brought a party of six to your restaurant for dinner on Friday, July 31st at 5:00 PM. I had called ahead to confirm the reservation, and was assured that you could provide a shuttle to the Disney Concert Hall for a 7 p.m. performance.\n\nWhen we reminded our waiter of the need for shuttle, he gave us the Shuttle tickets and told us the pick-up time was 6:25 PM. We went outside at 6:15 PM to wait. When the shuttle did not arrive by 6:30 PM, I went inside to inform the hostess who told me to wait 2 more minutes. After ten minutes more, I went back inside at 6:40 PM, and the hostess called the Shuttle driver. She told us that the driver was at 8th and Broadway. \n\nThree members of our party took a taxi around 6:40. After waiting five minutes longer, the rest of asked for our car from the restaurant valet. We had to valet park at the Disney Concert Hall, and barely made it to performance on time.\n\nAs a result of the shuttle delay, we had to pay an additional $45, $20 for the round trip taxi from Redbird to the Disney Concert Hall, and another $25 for the valet parking and tip at the Disney Concert Hall.\n \nSince I had suggested dining at Redbird, and taking the shuttle, I felt particularly embarrassed. \n \nI would hope that the Redbird Management would compensate us for the additional cost due to the failure of your shuttle to provide transportation as promised. \n\nSincerely,\nJai Wong

We ate at Redbird with friends, for a special occasion celebration. It took a while to be seated -- and once seated, we could see why. Our group of 5 had to be stuffed into a space designed for 4, back in a corner. Service was competent, and but nothing more. It was hard to figure out who our server was, since two guys seemed to alternate courses. My biggest complaint with service was the current trend of asking us to order 'everything all at once so we can pace it' -- this is never a good sign, since it tells me that the restaurant's needs take precedence over ours. (And ironically, one of the dishes we ordered arrived literally 3 minutes after we ordered, which told us it was prepared ahead. So much for pacing.) As for the food, it was good -- but not great. Maybe we judged unfairly, considering we've had two recent dinners elsewhere that were amazing -- and yet, from the ratings, I was expecting amazing. Servings were tiny for the price -- which wouldn't have been an issue if the food was fantastic. All in all, we're glad we tried Redbird, but we wouldn't return.

We had the fried chicken sandwich with harissa and it was basically flavorless. the fries were cold and needed tons of salt. the harissa on the side was sweet, not spicy. bloody mary's were bland. a friend ordered the burger and loved the bun, so there's that. the service was fantastic and couldn't have been more on point. we were just bummed about the mediocre food.

Dinner was great and we shared a lot. All until our desert came. The flavors were all wrong. Two different deserts... ruined our meal. It was many many flavors all trying to be something but they just did not work together. sorry but we were disappointed after a great meal! One of them had apricots - i think the sorbet and the other one had peaches i think. sorry I even looked back at the menu. It read nicer than it tasted.

My experience at Redbird started out really great. The drinks were good, the appetizers were delicious and the service was good. Somewhere between the appetizers and our main course, the service began to dwindle. Our main dishes came out about 30 minutes later and our waiter forgot to place one order entirely. The tofu was interesting but unless you really like BBQ sauce and BBQ flavors I wouldn't recommend it. The lamb chops were pretty good but not amazing either. \n\nWe ordered a few things on the desert menu to try but all of them were very abstract and not very great tasting.\n\nOverall, Redbird is a cool place to come and get a drink but don't come here for the service.

Wanted to take my husband somewhere special for his 60th birthday; read about Redbird for a long time and thought being served a wonderful meal at the old St. Vibiana's site would make it special. We took our adult kids and were treated to one of the best dining experiences we've been lucky enough to share. The decor was beautiful, the staff (hostess, server, sommelier, busboys) all were attentive, courteous, knowledgeable, efficient and NEVER rushed us. The food was all delicious. Not ONE item was less than phenomenal, and yes we are what they call 'foodies'. We had wattle pork, beef filet, wild boar, cod, avocado salad, squash salad, foie gras, headcheese, shishitos, carrots, chicken pot pie, chocolate caramel bar, walnut cake, pain perdu, a great wine, expertly made cocktails, and delicious coffee. Yes, we took pictures of everything to share and promote, and our friends and family kept asking us, 'what did you bring home?'. The answer was NOTHING. The dishwasher had nothing to do after receiving our plates, which all left the table without a crumb. We were lucky enough to be seated in the front area near the hostess booth/front door which was much quieter, as we dined on a Saturday night and it was crowded and lively in the other section of the restaurant. The only downside was the unexpected downtown traffic which got us there late (which they graciously accommodated). Make your reservations and go. You won't be disappointed.

I was disappointed by the food, flavor combinations and the lack of wines by the glass that would pair with the food. I hate quinoa. Why it was paired with a roasted duck breast I have no idea. Chicken pot pie does not need chicken livers it needs chicken. Chicken livers are what you throw away. why does a haute cuisine restaurant put them in its food? There was no pinot by the glass or a cru Beaujolais by the glass. The bottle prices were ridiculous. the customers are about 50% LA posers.

Loved it! The white bean bruschetta was amazing and the pizzas were excellent. I don't know exactly what made the crust so heavenly, but it was the best we've had (and we eat alot of pizza). The beer and wine choices were very good. And dessert...oh my, the mint chocolate chip gelato 'pie' was sinful and the sweet corn blackberry gelato was unbelievable. The noise level is a bit high and the tables a bit close together. Highly recommend and wish they'd come to Philly!

The review is really from my wife, because we went there to celebrate her birthday. With 9 people in our party, we decided to go 'family-style' so that we could try as many of the dishes as possible. Our waiter helped us through the menu, what to order, and I'm happy to say that my wife liked every single dish...and she can get picky. Everyone was content at the end of the meal (full...but not stuffed). We were lucky to be seated in the patio area, which definitely adds to the dining experience!

It was a beautiful venue and the first thing I noticed was the no-pressure attitude of the staff. One member of our party was late and they said we could sit or wait it didn't matter...so we sat. It was 30 mins before we were all finally ready to order...no rush. We were there for a solid 2 hours and no one ever encouraged us to hurry or wrap it up...that's unusual in LA at a hot spot restaurant. Our waiter Danny was adorable, attended to detail and was on top of everything. No complaints...except maybe the kooky people next to us who kept standing up to take pictures of all their food.

We live in DTLA and have been wanting to check this spot out since they opened. Reservations are hard to get especially on Friday's & Saturday's. When we arrived we were greeted and asked to take at seat at the lounge until our other guests arrived. Once we were checked-in and seated, the waiter did not ask if there was our first time at the restaurant nor did he go over the menu with us. We were a bit confused and when he started to take our order my friend said 'the menu wasn't explained to us' and he tried to explain it then, but not with much enthusiasm. We ordered the Black Bass which can be shared with 4 people and other side dishes. I must say the food was mediocre maybe because I had such HIGH expectations. Once we were done eating we sat there and ordered some desert and were talking. The waiter comes over and says 'can you please move into the lounge area because we have guests that have a reservation'. I was APPLAUD because I think the host/hostess or the manager should be asking us and they should offer complementary drinks if they are asking to go to the bar or lounge just like many other restaurants do in the neighborhood (Faith&Flower, Bestia, etc). I definitely think the service was NOT great and needs improvement. Not sure if I will be back anytime soon.

Redbird is an exceptional restaurant with excellent food, gracious service and a very special ambiance. Their specialty cocktails are delicious and well-designed. The indoor/outdoor patio is exceptionally welcoming. If you dine between 6-8pm in the summer, you'll likely witness the transition from a covered roof to an open-air patio.\n\nThe portions are reasonable and the prices are in-line with a restaurant of this caliber. Small plates are generally very small, including a shrimp and grits dish that consisted of two large shrimp with heads attached over grits for $14. The charred shishito peppers are a stand out and are plentiful. The rack of lamb was well prepared and had an exceptional lemon and mint sauce priced at $44 for two and 1/2 ribs.\n\nValet parking, nearly an essential is $12. If you have a special occasion and want to dine in downtown LA, you couldn't make a much better choice. Dinner for two with two drinks and one shared dessert with tip and tax was nearly $200.

The reason why I picked this place is because I wanted to impress a possible candidate for a Director position with our organization. Don't expect to leave this place under $100 per person if you drink wine or a cocktail. Also the parking is $12 with tip $15 again a little over the top. It also didn't help that they shut down valet service so we had to find parking blocks away. Wish it would have been better!

Absolutely OUTSTANDING! Outstanding!!\nThe dining room - wonderful, delightful, unexpected\nThe service - exceptional, warm, friendly \nThe food - OUTSTANDING\n\nWe were happily, happily surprised. My husband, son and I were so amazed about how delicious the food was. Chef Fraser has nailed it. The food presentation was beautiful, the seasonings on the dishes were perfect and the portions were perfect. \nIf you think of eating here run do not walk to get a table.

Out entrees (duck and lamb) were truly delicious; the best we've had. Given the prices, however, I would have expected more than to sit in the bar next to the kitchen. It may be worth it if you can be seated outside in the beautiful courtyard. Otherwise, there are comparable restaurants in Los Angeles that provide a more pleasant dining experience.

Friends with a know-how of good eats were arriving from NYC, with only enough time for lunch before heading to New Zealand. I wanted to WOW them! Redbird did that and more. \n\nThey called it a 'memorable dining experience.' The Chicken Pot Pie, the Trout, and the Roasted Chicken with lemons were agreeably DIVINE!\n\nTerrific ambiance, quiet and almost unnoticeable fine service and a unique menu.

I have read glowing reviews of Redbird, with people raving about the gorgeous space and the food. My experience was not as positive. Although there is a gorgeous bright courtyard area that's promoted everywhere in photos (apparently with a retractable ceiling over a beautiful outdoor space, complete with trees), I was not seated there ... instead, I was seated at a table inside, in the corner, near the entry area, sharing bench seating with my neighbors. Everything was very dark and fairly unremarkable - not what's featured in the ads. I dined for lunch during Dine LA - the food was quite good, but considering the lack of ambiance where I was seated, in my opinion the meal was nothing extraordinary for the price ($25 for a lunch of chopped vegetable salad and then chicken with lemon and curry flavors over a few baby vegetables, bread not brought or even offered). If you go, be sure to specify you want to dine in the outdoor space. Also, beware that they add a 3% 'benefits charge' to the bill - this is not disclosed ANYWHERE in advance.

The interior is beautiful. The food was excellent. Our only problem was that we sat for 20 minutes without being greeted by our server. We watched the three tables next to us eat, receive their checks, and have their tables bussed after they left, and still no one came to take our food or drink orders. If it wasn't for my friend having to ask a busser to find our server, we would've sat there even longer. And we understand that this is a busy restaurant, but it was well after the brunch rush and half of the tables were finished eating or empty by that time. When our server finally did arrive, it felt like he was doing us a favor by attending to us. It didn't sour our experience and might try it again for dinner. Also, the $12 for valet is exorbitant. There are lots across the street on Main for $5 or $6. We were lucky enough to find a meter around the corner for free. Score!

Looked forward to dinner last week at Redbird. Unfortunately, the reviews and hype didn't match reality. Although a pleasant dining room, it is NOISY. After about half an hour, I really didn't care much about savoring the food, just wanted to get it over. Overall, my food recollections suggest that the food (crispy Black Bass) was generally very good, but not all that spectacular compared to similar dishes such as the catfish at Shiro's. Yes, there are some very unique dishes, but overall can't recommend this restaurant.

For my work team's holiday lunch I wanted to take them someplace special. Redbird at St. Vibiana's Cathedral filled the bill. Dining in the historic structure is enthralling. The food is inspired by innovation but taste wins out over everything.\n\nHowever, the big let down was the service. Our waitress seemed to be operating in a different universe. She was less than helpful when asked questions. When it was time to take our orders she had failed to inform us that one of the main entrees, the trout, was unavailable--a cardinal sin (hey it's a cathedral). So then the four diners who wanted trout settled on the tuna.\n\nFive of the orders for our group came out at the same time but not the sixth which was an order for tuna. Our waitress now joins the witness protection program and we have to wait several minutes for her to come back to the table, and still the sixth meal had not been served.\n\nShe apologizes and runs back to the kitchen. Several minutes later she reappears and now offers the trout as a substitute for the tuna. WAIT A MINUTE! Is there a hidden camera? This is too ridiculous to be real. That's what he wanted in the first place but was told they were out of it. Now he will get trout while the others who tried to order trout will have to be content with tuna.\n\nAnd what did we get for all this mishigoss? A tiny scoop of ice cream to share. Sorry Redbird not good enough.

Redbird is a gorgeous upscale restaurant in downtown LA that serves innovative cuisine for well heeled diners. Luckily for us, we chose LA Restaurant Week to take advantage of the $49 dinners. All 4 of us thought the food was excellent. The strawberry salad was outstanding and my unusual fish entree was good though I unfortunately can't remember the name. The decor is lovely and the wait staff is very friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. My only criticism is that they sometimes cleared away plates before we were finished! Other than that, I highly recommend this restaurant, especially since it's quiet enough to carry on a conversation with ease.

Went for Dine L.A. promotion. I'd heard about how great Redbird was supposed to be, so I had expectations of excellence. These were unfortunately not met. It wasn't bad, but it was merely okay. I had the corn soup, which was fine if unexceptional. Followed this with the cavatelli, which was again okay but nothing special. Paid extra for the rice pudding dessert, which was significantly less good than the kind you could get at any deli. So it was passable, and the service was quite good, but considering how good it's supposed to be, the reality was somewhat disappointing.

Great DTLA restaurant if your looking for a unique blend of flavored in each meal, great service at a reasonable price. The wait staff, along with the chef, were flexible with substitutions; i.e., risotto for Swiss chards that went along with my tofu main course. Even though I'm gluten-free, I'm told the bread and butter served at the table were scrumptious.

The service iffy - we waited 15 minutes before our drink order taken and we had to request that as our waitress wanted to immediately take our dinner order.\n\nPersonally would have rather eaten in the front bar; the outside seating area is way too cramped and sterile. Nothing romantic and if you were there for a romantic dinner, you were too close to the next table.\n\nA lot of hype that wasn't warranted, probably won't go there again.

We've dined in Redbird several times over the past year, when visiting our son who lives in downtown LA. He's even more of a foodie than us, and he gives the place high marks. Besides the amazing food, what I liked about Redbird was the excellent service from every single person who had anything to do with our dining experience. Well spoken, knowledgeable wait staff, a very attentive sommelier who did much more than just serve wine, hostesses who took pictures for us and brought us champagne (it was our anniversary) ... truly, we were made to feel like royalty. We were pleased to learn how the menu was set up -- one dot at the top meant small serving, two dots, medium and three dots a large entree. We had the spicy shishito peppers with the added crunch of quinoa for openers; then the grilled lamb belly with kimchi, which was to die for. The last choice we had was a cod dish -- I can't remember but I think it might have been poached -- but that one wasn't particularly special. I mean, it wasn't bad, but just not special like the others. I don't think it was the Basque Cod, though. For dessert my husband had the chocolate caramel bar. At the sommelier's suggestion, I tried the the Creamsicle, which I would have never picked myself but which was out of this world with the different flavors and textures mingling to provide a remarkable and exciting dessert experience. Thank you, Redbird, for making our 49th anniversary such a memorable occasion.

Redbird is a beautiful spot in DTLA. It tries hard to be a sophisticated restaurant for grown-ups. Th crowd was certainly pretty the night we were there. Service was attentive, except for the bizarre practice of bringing us empty wine glasses after taking our drinks order, and leaving them empty for 15 minutes. Appetizer crudo was delicious. But out cooked entries were disappointing. Gemelli noodles drowned in a goat ragu and rabbit cooked like pork that tasted like Canadian bacon? neither of these remotely lived up to the promise of Redbird. We would go back eventually, but warily, I'm afraid.

While in all respects but just one I'd rate my dining experience at Redbird as a 10 on a 10-point scale in one key area I'd have to rate it as a 2. This key area is the food. I ordered the $19 shrimp starter and the $33 salmon entree. The starter consisted of just 2 medium size shrimp. The entree made me laugh in disbelief. It came on a large dinner plate. The piece of salmon was relatively tiny and overcooked. It was maybe a 1/8 of a pound. It along with a small amount of some tasty vegetable were positioned on the edge of a dark grey plate that left about 70% of the remainder of the plate looking dark and empty...\nOn this basis alone I'd be dubious about returning, though my 2 accompanying friends enjoyed somewhat larger portions.\nSpecial mention must be made of the manager Danielle, who not only remembered each of our names and excitedly and humorously interacted with us a number of times it appeared she did the same with all the other guests.

The menu is fun and exciting - didn't feel like 'more of the same' - and all the dishes were excellent. I might advise steering around the smoked tofu, which I ordered as my main course and which didn't quite deliver on the rhapsodic reviews I had read before we ate here. Red Bird seems to be in a groove, hitting on all cylinders. It's popular, the food is well executed and creative, and the service is, well, happy. You can sort of tell when the staff is just glad to be working at a particular restaurant, and the Red Bird staff was friendly, efficient and outwardly joyful. The appetizers and mains were all very good bordering on great. The only partial miss for us was the dessert list, which felt a bit challenging. We still ordered two, and found them, er, challenging to enjoy. Not bad, but not easy either.\n\nThe bright patio space was tented when we entered, then somewhat magically, al fresco just as our main dishes were arriving. The decor is understated and mature, as it should be in a historic building. More than that, it was well tuned to the level of cuisine here: thoughtful and well executed.

We had the saddle of pork, the beef short rib, the scallops, the cod and the duck. To start we had the shusitsu peppers (very good) and the rabbit sausage pasta (also amazing). Perhaps the weakest dist were the scallops: very good but nothing particularly note worthy. By far the best dish was the short rib: an amazing cut without the bone cooked to perfection and tender as can be. The initial opening menu had very little to choose from for vegetarians, which we are, but the Christmas Menu had great choices. We had the early 5:00 pm seating, and while we were reminded to arrive early, the staff was still being instructed in the main dining room until past five. When we did get in we were shuttled to the bar from where they eventually seated us. It's the holidays, I get it, but it seemed very unprepared. Our of what we ordered, we were impressed by the heirloom tomato salad (excellent). Comparable to Lucques seasonal tomato salad. That's something. Would return to try other dishes. And go later, when it is dark for more atmosphere. Definitely sit in the main room and not the adjacent bar area which feels rather like a hotel. Recommend.

Went to Redbird with a lot of anticipation and was still pleasantly surprised by the great décor and ambiance, the space is amazing. the food is also very interesting. we had the spicy margarita (not on the menu) very nice We started with the shishito peppers which were different, very lemony and nice, the tagliatelle were very tasty. We also had the swordfish which was a bit too salty for my taste. Overall very nice and warrants a return visit for sure!

I've been a strict vegetarian for 16 years, so please don't spread around the fact that I tried MY FRIEND'S Cottage Pie, and the Braised Goat. They were the tastiest things I've ever tried at any restaurant in Los Angeles. But I will stick to my braised tofu and lentils (which were fantastic as well) from here on out. Chef Neal Fraser kindly greeting us after dinner as well, and signed my friend Jenia's menu, so it was definitely a bucket-list-worthy experience overall.

First off, the food was excellent. The service in the beginning was pretty lackluster. I was there for my wife's birthday (which they knew about ahead of time) and we had a reservation for 8:30. We got sat at 9:00. We were waiting so long supposedly for the 'good' table which turned out to be directly in front of the waiters supply table so throughout the night the waiters were directly behind me grabbing forks and glasses so it was a bit noisy. So, that can't be considered the 'good' table. I would have taken any table because I think waiting 30 minutes to sit is a bit much. Then we ordered from one waiter and he told us he was leaving and another waitress took over. They were both nice, especially the waitress who took over but my wife and I didn't get our first bite of food for 40 minutes while the couple that came with us was served their appetizer. So that was pretty frustrating. So basically an hour and 10 minutes before any food. I'm basically writing this so hopefully the staff can come up to the level of the food because the food was VERY good. Everything we had. If we had been seated sooner and gotten our food sooner the whole experience would have been 5 stars.

Perhaps I ordered wrong, but I found the food at Redbird boring and uninspired. Place seemed to be more about a scene than great food.\n\nNothing particularly wrong with the Shishito pepper appetizer, but not very interesting or inspired.\n\nTrout overcooked and insipid.\n\nThe strawberry tart dessert was the best part of the meal, but it was miniscule -- the smallest dessert I have received in any restaurant . I'm not a person who is into huge portions, but this was just ridiculous. Even my dining companion commented on how small the dessert was.\n\nThe service was excellent.\n\nThe decor was pleasant enough, but I didn't like the noise level and how crammed together the tables were on patio.

I took my boyfriend here and we had a wonderful time. The service staff was always on top of everything. The food was inventive and wonderful. Highlights were the posole, soft-shell crab, and pommes aligot. The drinks were well-made. I had the Little Tokyo, and it was the first drink I had where I actually liked the aperol in. The 'outside' dining area is a bit loud and cramped, but the service staff navigated it wonderfully. The mood was very positive, though, and the tables were close enough that you can eye what others were having and ask them questions about them.

we had high expectations for Redbird but after waiting 15 min for our drinks (which were overdone) they immediately dumped 4 appetizers on our table (they barely fit). While they and the entrees were good, there was nothing spectacular about them. Then there were the desserts, which held soo much promise from thier descriptions, but the peaches on salty toast surrounded by bread crumbs that should have been on the thanksgiving turkey and the crazy cream sickle with all the weird crap ( we had to ask 3times what it all was) should have been on a tv show, not on my plate

Though the menu appeared at first to really scattered across styles and flavors, we were thrilled with the results. Every dish we ordered was incredible. Tender octopus, melty blackened cod, sweet and spicy thai curry crab soup. The only problem: the dining room. The inside dining area tables share space with the lounge and bar. It was insanely loud with people having a raucous good time drinking cocktails and eventually turned into a full-on bar experience around 10pm. It was great food, but I wouldn't go back if we couldn't sit in the main dining area.

I had made a reservation for late in the evening, thinking it would be easier to get a table, but I was sorely wrong. My party had to wait for nearly an hour to get a table. We were offered to go to the bar and drink while waiting, but we had to go and ask twice why we had not been seated. Waiting for nearly and hour to get a table when the reservation was made and waiting is never a good thing. In addition, it was a birthday and nothing special was really done. Additionally, our server was being trained that night and really not very attentive to our table at all. She took our order, but didn't come back to check on us and her 'trainer' never came by either.\n\nWhile the food is good - I was disappointed.

I dined at Redbird last Wednesday with some very good friends and had an enjoyable experience. We all selected the DineLA menu with one entree being the smokey tofu dish, another the pork tenderloin and my dish of shrimp with pasta. Others at the table had salmon, pasta, and a vegetarian dish, and we were all very happy. Drinks and wines were excellent. Desserts were delicious. Service was fine, though somewhat lacking in warmth. This is now one of the best restaurants in downtown L. A. There are items of interest for the adventurous as well as the cautious. If you're not acquainted with the neighborhood, I live in it, and it's perfectly safe. Walk down 2nd into Little Tokyo after your meal to work off some calories and to observe the scene.

The locale, the history and the ambience are definitely worthy, and my party of four all had a fun evening together -- our first time at Redbird. Took us two months to get a reservation at 7 on a Saturday night and maybe our expectations were set too high. I don't think so. Even though Redbird doesn't seat people for dinner before 5PM and most of the staff is in a meeting, the doors are open beforehand with friendly people greeting you and the outer bar open so you don't have to hang awkwardly on the sidewalk before an early reservation as in so many LA restaurants. The staff is professional, friendly and casual as they should be in LA. Crisp jeans and nice shirts are in order. The drinks and food are inventive and very good, the service is appropriately attentive, but do not expect any bargains. This place adds up quickly. Very quickly. And that is my biggest rub with Redbird. I think the food and drinks are great, but just a cut below their pricing. Not far, but a noticeable bit. The Porterhouse was the standout, as it was perfectly seared on the outside, and a deliciously buttery medium rare on the inside. Very flavorful. \n\nThe interior of the restaurant is almost worth having a meal here. Open air, but without feeling fully exposed to the elements. The place is beautiful, the staff very attentive. I had a cocktail called a 'black-eyed susan' which is my new favorite. The wine we got was recommended by their sommelier, and was perfect. We weren't fans of the appetizer (burrata salad ) which was quite bland, and the filet Mignon was fine, but for the price, not worth it for us. The Desert, however, was amazing. I would definitely come back for drinks/desert, but skip dinner.

We ordered smoked tofu with beluga lentils and they must have run out of the red wine truffle nage and poured bbq sauce on the tofu!! It tasted awful like store bought bbq. We should have sent it back. They took very long to bring out the dish and the waiter kept avoiding us. The rest of the food was just ok. Not very innovative. The drinks were good however. We usually order dessert but we were afraid of how long it would take and how bad it might be. We will not go back.

We ended our recent trip to LA with a Sunday dinner at Redbird. The exterior patio area was full when we arrived, so we were seated inside, which was a bit less vibrant and a lot more quiet. We had a tough time getting our waiter to take our order, but once we got started with the amuse booze (a complimentary vanilla cocktail) and the sommelier, it got better. The food doesn’t qualify as farm to table (the asparagus came from Holland and the scallops from Boston) but it was simply wonderful. The white asparagus was the best version I’ve had outside of Germany and everything we had, including the burrata salad, cavatelli, wild striped bass, day boat scallops, the pommes aligot, sugar snap peas and the creamsicle dessert was simply wonderful. The wine list had some great selections. We ended up spending more than you’d expect at a restaurant like this, but it was worth every penny. With restaurants like this in the downtown area, who needs to eat anywhere else in LA?

Absolutely delightful experience all around, great service and delicious and tantalizing entrees. Every appetizer and entree was made to perfection and is perfectly portioned. Really enjoyed the curry foie gras and lamb chops. Avocado salad was fresh and light. The restaurant is welcoming and trendy yet not stuffy. Love what they did with the interior of the restaurant, definitely worth many more visits.

What can I say -- My wife took me to Redbird for my birthday this year, because I enjoy extravagant 'foodie' experiences. Especially on a special occasion. The service was very good, and I liked the atmosphere, but the food was nothing to write home about. Not bad at all, but nothing extraordinary. Nothing memorable at all. The most memorable thing was feeling vaguely ripped off after spending $250 on a 'meh' meal. I could have eaten a lot of good sushi for $250. Redbird came highly recommended by a couple who'd dined there when it first opened. I guess they're not trying hard enough anymore. Maybe they feel they don't need to, because the place was packed with people who seemed to be into the 'scene.' The view was nice, but not enough for me to recommend. Eye of the tiger, people!

Beautiful ambiance. Food is below average - dishes were either too bland or way too salty; we overheard the table next to us complain about the same issue.

Wait staff was professional, appeared well trained, and were friendly. Food flavors well balanced. We had the liberty duck and the striped bass. Both were very flavorful. Plan on valet parking, although there is some street parking and a lot a block away. The front entrance is stairs only, but there is a long ramp around to the back for handicap access. Interesting building architecture since it is a converted rectory.

We reserved way in advance so we could get a table in the main room, but after we told the hostess we had a gift card, we were seated near the bar. They did give us a glass of champagne as an apology, but the room was loud and not special. The food was good, but certainly not the best, and not worth the cost. The sommelier didn't leave the cork with us. Sounds picky, I know, but it adds up. I would go back if someone took me, but it would not be my choice. Sorry. Really wanted to love it.

J Gold says this is the most anticipated restaurant opening of the decade??? Maybe for the ambiance but not for the cuisine. But I'm a sucker and I go where J Gold tells me...so I made a reservation for my husband's birthday. \nWe get there, get seated in a lovely room, have some fantastic cocktails, waiter tells my husband happy birthday, and then it's a wild ride of emotional/gustatory highs and low. We started with the hiramasa, the pork belly/octopus/lentils dish, and the lamb/kimchi/yogurt. The hiramasa was tough and flavorless, despite sitting in some promising-looking oils and garnishes. I thought the pork belly-octopus dish was punchy yet satisfying, but my husband was disturbed by how charred it was. The lamb/kimchi/yogurt was a standout.\nOur two mains were the red wattle pork rack with spaetzle, and the cod with morcilla and peppers and squid ink over rice. I wish our waiter had warned us about how big the pork dish was. The fat could have been rendered a bit more as the meat was a bit on the chewy side, but the spaetzle and other garnishes helped. The cod was gross. I tried 1 bite, choked it down, and tried a second bite to make sure I wasn't hallucinating. I don't think this was a cultural misunderstanding...it was just unbearably greasy and salty.\nFor dessert we had the chocolate caramel bar. It was meh. It came with ice cream that was smoky to the point of being unpleasant, which then melted all over the the decent parts of the chocolate/caramel bar and made it icky, too.\nWe were seated next to a table of doctors who were loudly discussing surgeries gone wrong for the better part of our mains and dessert, and behind us there was a group of bloggers taking dozens of flash pictures of every dish on their table, which unfortunately took a bit away from the experience of the beautiful space. I'm glad I experienced Redbird once, but I could think of so many better places to spend this kind of money on a special-occasion meal.

We were a table of 4, and ordered a bottle of sauvignon blanc, which came at room temperature, very surprising for a place like this. When we notified our waiter he brought some ice, but it took some time for the bottle to cool down. 3 of us ordered the striped bass, which was very plain and came with a weird watery broth. The other adult had the cod, which was very good. The waiter was very nice and when he asked about our food, we were honest about it. The manager came later to apologize about the wine and the bass and indicated the desserts would be comp'd. \nThis was a very nice gesture, but overall we were all disappointed. The place is great, the service is very good, but the food didn't meet our expectations.

There were a number of fruit flies swarming our table for the first half of our dinner. The meal was average. Not bad but not high quality, which the prices would have you believe. We were seated in the first room which made us feel like we were dining in a hotel lobby. The outside looked much better.

Redbird is an incredible new addition to the downtown foodie scene. The dishes range wildly in price but you get what you pay for. We were blown away by the Dungeness Crab Soup and the Mussels as starters, along with the fresh baked bread. Service is 'European-paced' so by the time the entrees came out we were already full, but can't complain when the food is this good! Just prepare to take your time and enjoy a few cocktails between courses.\n\nOur only regret was that we were sat indoors. While the old rectory space is beautiful, it's small and quiet as opposed to the vibrant and energetic open-air courtyard.

Let me use Trumpian language (not something I would normally resort to)-\n\nReally tremendous ! They have the best people working, the very best. Neal Fraser is a very good friend and he stopped by to say very nice things. \n\nThe sommelier did a fantastic job of down selling to a wine from Spain that was superb and inexpensive.

We loved our experience at Redbird, not only is it a beautiful location with friendly and knowledgable staff but the food was outstanding, and we sampled plenty of it! We had the Spanish octopus, the avocado salad and chicken pot pie as appetizers and the cod and the steak as entrees and I really can't begin to decide which I enjoyed more, it was all delicious, the bottle of wine was exquisite (and the sommelier was great) and then we capped it all off with a lovely light dessert, the Pavlova I think it was called. We will definitely be going back!

By far one of my favorites in LA! The menu is exquisite. You go here for the food. The ambiance is the icing. Also their crafted cocktails are AMAZING! Don't order wine, ask for a specially made martini! \n\nSidenote: Bring cash for the valet because there is no where to park in the area near by.

Great food, drink selection and vibe. Service was impeccable and we loved our servers recommendations. The only thing that i would recommend would be to include their 3% full time employee health benefit into the meal price like most businesses in LA already do instead of listing it as an additional charge.

Redbird was a top-notch dining experience. The quality of the food was very high we enjoyed a variety of appetizers and entrees that we shared tapas-style as a group. The ambiance was fantastic for a birthday celebration, business dinner, or a date. A few of us had wine and others ordered the 'bartender's choice' cocktails (we just chose a spirit) and they were all great.

My first visit last year was so impressive I brought home a menu. I have eaten there several times since including this week. I was not disappointed. Although I had booked a table for 2 I had about 12 colleagues join us for cocktails...the staff were very generous and fixed us a space to be together-in fact when out of their way...then we moved to bar and the service still outstanding we ate at their instead of moving to our table. The food outstanding, unusual and creative. The next day it turns out many people that went for cocktails ending up eating....there were many excellent comments about the lamb! Great job!
