About Tam O'Shanter

The Tam O'Shanter is a dining legend in the heart of Los Angeles, here you will find the charm of a Highland inn. The qualities that built our reputation- superb food, outstanding service and a dedication to honoring our guests with the highest quality in value-are as strong today as when we first opened our doors in 1922.

No wonder the Tam has remained the oldest continuously owned and operated restaurant in Los Angeles. They treat their employees right (even the bus boys have remained their for years) and they treat their customers even better.

We arrived about 10 minutes early from our scheduled appointment and found the reception staff not to be welcoming and somewhat distant. We were asked to wait. While waiting and sandwiched between two restrooms I found the odor to be less than desirable. At our appointed time we were called and escorted to the 'Walt Disney Annimators' table. Our waitress was attentive and friendly and explained the significance of our location and specials of the day. My wife enjoyed the trout special and I chose the 'Tam OShanter Cut' prime rib. \nI found the combination of prime rib, mashed potatoes and spinach not to the expectation of Lowreys branding.

First visit. History of establishment was shared when seated; amazing experience. Our entire party raved about the dinner and specialized drinks. What was apparent and amazing to us., was the positive attitude of the employees we interacted with. Appreciate the attention and have been voted (by my family and extended family), that this will be our 'new favorite place!!

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Tam 'O Shanter. The food was delicious, the service was good and we liked the fact that it was nice and quiet. The only negative that I can think of was that the coffee was too strong, but the waitress brought us some water to add to the coffee and that was helpful. We also like the tasty desserts.

We had a birthday party for a friend of ours that turned 100. He likes prime rib so we wanted a place where he could get an appropriately cooked piece of prime rib mid day. The staff at Tam were great as I set it up through Sharon who requently serves me during the week. Everyone was great and the event went off perfectly even though it was a transition time between lunch and dinner.

Very busy night at this spot where we hadn't been in years. Used to be one of our favorites. Clientele ranged from large family gatherings to neighborhood 'hipsters,' which was the first change we noted. No big deal. Except the food was bland at best, with little flavor. Our waiter was very preoccupied with a large table which he devoted 90% of his attention to, leaving us to ask random busboys for assistance. Too bad. We used to really love this place when we lived in the neighborhood. This time it took us over an hour in traffic from the westside. Will not be making that long trek again anytime soon.

The food was orgasmic but honestly there were a lot of old people and it was hard to eat bc I didn't want to disturb them with my outlandish/modern comments. But honestly the food was 10/10 and our waiter was very handsome.

My girlfriend, and I came in early afternoon on Saturday. We were seated promptly since we had a reservation. Once we were sat, we were told a waiter would come to take our drink order shortly. We waited what seemed like 15 minutes, there was no shortage of servers that would pass us. Eventually our server came, and apologized for the delay, he stated he was not told he had a table. The server's apology seemed very sincere, and genuine. The server took our drink, and dinner order, at this point I was ready to just leave, he promptly returned with our drinks, and our food quickly followed (must have been expedited). Our server was very attentive throughout the dinner, and did a great job. The overall experience was 'meh', I would go again, but probably not for dinner, and just hit up the bar area. I was not happy how plenty of servers saw us waiting, not being helped, and did not offer to assist. Whatever issue the servers may have with each other internally should not be taken out on the consumer. I do not blame our server, I blame the team for not properly informing the server on time, or having someone ask us if we could be helped. \n\nEarlier I mentioned I may be making a return visit, I'm not so sure of that any longer. It seems this restaurant for being the institution that it is, should really set their affairs in order.

As always, the food is great!!! I only have one complaint....For some silly reason, the management decided that it was tacky to offer toothpicks to their guests!!! Every restaurant needs toothpicks!!!!!!! Absolutely ridiculous!!!! At least keep them under the counter if you don't want to display them!!!!!! Thanks!!!!!

If you're in the mood for a good, unpretentious prime rib dinner, Tam O'Shanter is a great choice. The environment is festive yet comfy and homey. Wine and spirits are well-stocked. I might hesitate to take a first date here if you're trying to impress, but for any occasion that doesn't require absolute formalness, this restaurant fits the bill.

Excellent as always. The food was excellent. The server was exceptionally nice and had a good sense of humor. We have eaten there for years and have never been disappointed. We were engaged in the 60's , broke up, and finally married in 1992. The first place we met after 30 some years was Tam O Shanter for lunch. The waiter told us that we must have just gotten married because it showed that we were so much in love. The Tam will always be a part of our life.

Amazing! Historic! Walt Disney himself had a table there, and the cottage in Snow White was based on the restaurant, and you can tell! \nFood is fantastic and old timey, classic. \nThe Prime Rib and the table 31 drink were great.\nWaiter was super fun, seems like someone who could work for Disney. \n\nAlso, they had a fun rustic band playing fun good old timey songs. \n\nI would highly recommend this place; if only just to see the atmosphere and decorations

Had eaten prime rib and soufflés there for dinner a few times and had a great experience. This was our first visit for lunch/brunch and it was disappointing. $18 for a thin little Ruben sandwich with a crummy 'salad bar' that had wet disgusting potato salad, some coleslaw and condiments is a rip off. My wife had corned beef hash that was good but also overpriced. My son had the small prime rib that was good as usual. We shared a couple of deserts that were mediocre. So $100 for that lunch is just really not a good value. Server kept forgetting requests and had to be reminded repeatedly. I am a Lawry's VIP and this is not the first time my experience has been substandard at their restaurants! Will never go there for lunch again! Not sure I'd go back for dinner either.

This was our tenth time here and unfortunately due to a major power outage, we weren't able to sit down for a complete meal as the restaurant was forced to close pending repairs to a blown transformer! We found ourselves at the Tam O’Shanter after doing a search for “things to do Disney-related in LA”. Apparently, this was a favorite of Walt Disney. Luckily for us, I made an advance reservation as this place is quite popular and the wait time can be an hour or more. Right away, we feel a little underdressed but we treated as nicely as can be. The Hostess, Waiter, and the rest of the staff couldn’t have been any friendlier. The food was delicious and was enjoyed quite a lot. We are not from the area but visit on a regular basis. We already have plans to dine at the Tam O’Shanter the next time we are in town.

We came on a double date and had a splendid time. Mark, our excellent waiter, delighted in telling us the history of the room we were dining in, that Walt Disney used to sit in 'that table' right there and the room we were in was used as a model for the cottage in Snow White. Because Tam O'Shanter is a Lawry's restaurant, the prime rib is the go-to item. It's served in different cuts to match any appetite and does not disappoint. The sides were equally as good and Id recommend Tam O'Shanter as high as it can be rated.

An escape to another time from the costumed waitresses to the architecture to the bar to the hearty portions. Has a country club feeling. Pricey but they do have a rewards program to make it a little easier. Creamed spinach tastes weird, mashed potatoes should be thicker, prime rib is very good, salmon is good, Yorkshire pudding/popover is excellent, and the my favorite is the brisket which is only served in the bar. For dessert, the English Trifle is delicious.

I was really looking forward to going here for DineLA, it was on my bucket list. The drive was over a hour, but I knew I'd enjoy it. Everything came to a screeching halt when we were seated and were told we HAD to pay $25 for live entertainment in the dining room! What kind of a restaurant books live entertainment that requires patrons who are coming specifically for DineLA?! So we book on OpenTable and this happens. We were sent to the bar since we didn't want to pay. Then the waitress suggested we move to this very comfortable booth. I've had it. We sat down, I asked if a manager was around and she sent her to the table. I told her all of this. She apologized. The meal was very good, the staff were all stressed out. Heck, we hadn't been served dinner and our waitress asked what we wanted for dessert. Back to the food, great steak and sides. The devour was very interesting! When our bill arrived I saw our drinks were comped, I thanked the management and our waitress. She was very sweet just overwhelmed. I will say to them, OpenTable, and DineLA that this experience is not okay. Patrons who book reservations should automatically be seated in the main dining room, we weren't even given that much respect when we were first seated and I had the same experience of being seated outside of the restaurant, the ambience is huge!!! Also, no participating restaurants should force additional fees during DineLA!

I had a terrible and poor experience at the Tam O'Shanter Inn on January 20, 2017. I paid the bill for a bad time and lack of service. I opine, the staff requires intense training, coaching and life skills. No response or outreach from neither the General Manager John Lindquist nor the corporate office. O'well. \n\nLawry's The Prime Rib, Beverly Hills has never been problematic and always an abundant of skill, experience and exciting food. Always welcomed. This never happened at the Tam O'Shanter. My birthday celebration was nothing less than treated like a whore and pay the damn bill. \n\nThere will be no next time at this place. My patronage will be at Pacific Dining Car, Los Angeles; The Musso & Frank Grill, Hollywood; Taylor's Steak House, Los Angeles; Ruth's Chris Steak House, Woodland Hills; and, Nick and Stef's, Los Angeles just to name a few.\n\nLastly, serving a written notice to Lawry's Restaurants, Inc., the agent for service of process Tiffany Dawn Stith located at 234 E. Colorado Blvd., Suite 500 Pasadena California 91101 might be an alternative and provide transparency.

I've eaten at almost all the hotspots in LA and Tam o Shanter was next on my list. I don't know how this place is popular, it was the worst tasting food I've probably ever eaten. The decor was probably the only good thing. My steak looked like plastic, I don't know how you can mess up cooking a steak. My boyfriends food was utterly horrific in taste and the look, I think it was called 'Toad in a hole' and the food resembled the name which was funny. The music was so low that we could hear everyone's conversations so clearly it was hard to talk in your own conversations. The atmosphere made us lose our appetite because a man next to us started to prefusely bleed and the blood was everywhere and none of the employees was doing anything to help. We were so embarrassed at how bad the food was that even though the food was packed to go, we left it at the table and went home. I don't know how people eat here. I was so very disappointed because I genuinely thought it was going to be a delicious meal. Wouldn't recommend EVER and never going back.

I loved being at the Tam for my birthday. I enjoyed the Toad in the Hole for lunch. The meaty stew balanced well with the acidity in the vinaigrette on the salad. I loved the deviled eggs too! The hubby ordered his favorite when dining at a Lawry's restaurant, Prime Rib. I doesn't matter which location you go to, their prime rib is always consistently perfect in doneness and flavor. They also still had the Yule Log on the menu for dessert! It was scrumptious!

We have been going to the Tam for years now. I love the atmosphere, the service is always outstanding, and the food is good. This time, however, the food was very sub-par. I was very disappointed. They changed the Toad-in-the-Hole--no gravy (What?! Scottish food with no gravy??!). It was dry and overdone. Plus they halved the amount of filet so they could sub in carrots and kale. Ummm...I like carrots and kale but not in my Toad in the Hole. If I wanted healthy, I would order a salad. I expected flavorful comfort food. The steak my husband ordered was very bland--didn't seem like they'd even salted or peppered it. Just cooked a slab of meat. The potatoes, however, were so garlicky that they were inedible. I tried a bite because I didn't believe him, and it literally brought tears to my eyes. We are garlic loving family, but oh my!.\n\nI still will go back for the ambiance, especially at Christmas time. Their wine and scotch list is pretty amazing, so you can always drink your dinner:-) But for date nights, I'm now thinking I will go elsewhere. Pity, because it is such a fun place and the staff are always excellent.

The Tam O'Shanter has been delighting diners for 90 years in the Atwater area of Los Angeles. We have been going to the Tam for about 30 of those years. We have been going to the Tam for New Year's Eve for at least the last 5 years. We had the Prime Rib, of course. This is a Lawry's restaurant and it would be unfortunate to not partake of their specialty. We had the Prince Charlie cut (the largest cut on the menu) and the English cut (thinly sliced). Each was perfection of its cut and cooked as requested (medium-rare and medium, respectively). The mashed potatoes and gravy served with were a great compliment to the beef and rounded-out this great meal.\nWe started with the Scottish Rarebit (with toast points) and it was delightful. Had no idea it has ale in it until we read the menu. A nice light start. We then had the wedge salad which was fresh crispy romaine and pearl tomatoes with a bleu cheese dressing and was wonderful.\nThe twice-baked potato was a tasty chunky treat.\n Certainly NYE is not the only time to go to this well-established landmark in the Atwater area of Los Angeles. While we were there for NYE, you need not wait to enjoy the great Scottish ambiance. So don't!

As little things differ from Lawry's to Tam's, I would say you get almost exactly what you're looking for at Lawry's. The quality, the meat, and the service is identical to Lawry's. The upper hand here is, you don't have to drive into Beverly Hills to enjoy a Lawry's cut, and there is no salad spinning (never enjoyed the 'show'). The downside? As the Yorkshire pudding at Tam's is delicious, it's TOTALLY different (but not a deal breaker). Tam's gives off a more intimate and a locals only feel. If you're looking for more glitz? Trek over to Beverly Hills. This will suite your fancy for a weekday/end date, as well as a celebratory meal, closing a business deal or just another Wednesday night. If you can remember, ask for Diana. She is probably the best server of all my years dining at Tam's. I hope you have the opportunity to sit in her section. You won't regret it.

I have been going to Tam O'Shanter for many, many years. Haven't been there in about six months. The quality of the food has really gone down hill. Had fish and chips...fish was fishy tasting and dry...a very big disappointment. Also...the interior needs a little refurbishing. especially the carpets. It was always such a lovely restaurant to go to and now, sadly, it has been taken off my list.

Really do not see a lot of restaurants serving Yorkshire Pudding and Haggis but this one does if you are looking for it. Their prime rib is a specialty also, along with the Short Ribs. Both were ordered by three members of our party and they loved it - cooked to perfection! I had the toad in a hole, which is a shepherd's pie served in Yorkshire Pudding rather than a mashed potato piecrust. It lacked something (maybe it's supposed to) to give it that flavor kick that I look for in a meal. (chili, cumin, cilantro, or some other unique flavor).\n\nOur waitress was wonderful and very anxious to please.

My answer is the same as all the other times you have asked about the Tam. GREAT! If you love Lawry's prime rib, you will love the Tam. To be fair, on occasion I have chosen something other than the prime rib and each has been between Very Good and Outstanding. Also, don't forget the dessert. The favorites are a piping hot chocolate souffle with lots of whipped cream on the side and the hot fudge sundae -- they use C. C. Brown's hot fudge, which is in a league by itself.

As I have said all the other times you have asked for our opinion about the Tam, it is one of our favorite restaurants. We get there about every few months. I love the wenches! We had an adorable waiter with some kind of English (?) accent. Kind of like Madonna. \nHe was enthusiastic and super cute. He brought each dish out with flourish and commented on its aesthetic or special flavor. My only negative is they didn't have the rib eye on the menu. I guess it is seasonal. I got the toad in the hole. It was too heavy and over cooked for my liking but it was definitely comfort food. My cousin had the hanger steak and it looked amazing. \nMy wedge salad was gorgeous. \nWe didn't get dessert this time but I highly recommend the soufflé!\n\nAlso I forgot to get my points!!!! We have been going to the Tam O-Shanter for many years and hosted a party there for 6 last Sunday. As always, the service was friendly and efficient but, with the increase in prices and reduction in quality of some of the food, we are now wondering if it is really worth returning to this landmark restaurant. One of our guest ordered a filet mignon and the quality was mediocre at best. In addition and with the increase in prices for the various prime rib entree choices, we have nearly decided that we would rather be spending only a slight more for the world class quality of prime rib offered at Lawry's on La Cienega.

Excellent as always - our traditional family event restaurant. Service was excellent although it appeared that their traditional female waitress staff has been replaced by an all male waiter staff in the dining rooms, although not the bar area - strange. Menu has preserved their regular prime rib choices, but otherwise has been significantly downsized as regards the number of choices - not a good thing. Removal of the rotisserie not only hurt the menu, but also the ambience. Beef was excellent and better than the last several visits; and looked just like the photo - truly picture perfect both as regards portion size and quality and skill of carving. However, attention to toughness/tenderness would be worthwhile. For a restaurant that is there for almost 100 years, changing the logo was a lousy choice, particularly the new logo chosen. Similarly, an excellent Points Program appears to have been gutted in value by imposition of expiration dates.

It was a birthday party for my wife. The restaurant touts the famous CC Browns hot fudge sundae, the waitress brought the 2 out we ordered after our meal plus various other deserts and then stated 'we are out of whip cream for the sundaes'! One of the three ingredients needed for this desert. I hate prime rib and suffered through the menu for the happiness of the 8 guests I had taken there. one sundae was for me. How do you run out of whip cream. I sent an email to the restaurant after I received this request for a review asking do you really want me to review my experience? and they did not have the decency to reply, they certainly had no problem taking $600.00 from me. My boyfriend and I have been to Tam O'Shanter twice, and both times, the service left a lot to be desired. Since the actual server doesn't bring the food out, requested items are forgotten and then it takes some time before we see anyone to follow up. \n\nExamples:\n\nThe first time, we decided to share a meal and stated to the server that the order would be split and asked if we could have an extra plate. When the food runner brought the meal, we did not get the extra plate we requested. It wasn't until the food was cold that we finally were brought the extra plate. \n\nThe second time, my boyfriend ordered a side to go with his meal. It didn't arrive with the food, and while he kept getting the 'it'll be right out', it didn't get delivered until he was practically done with his meal. At which point, he no longer wanted it. I was shocked we were actually charged for it when it appeared it was forgotten to be added into the order until the first 'I'm so sorry - it should be right out'. \n\nOne redeeming quality - The bus staff are always the most attentive and accommodating. \n\nIt is so disappointing because the ambiance and setting of the establishment is wonderful and it comes with so much history.

Somewhat surprised by this, we asked the host, John, why this table was now available when we had just been told No one could be seated there. He left saying he would find out for us. John never returned as promised and ignored our table until we were forced to ask Why he never returned with an explanation as promised. John replied flippantly that he did not find out. When we then asked the name of the Hostess, he reluctantly said, ' I think Jennifer' When asked her last name, he turned his back saying rudely, 'I don't know'. We don't mind not being allowed to be seated at a requested table if it is reserved or if we are treated equally with all other patrons. However, to be denied, then given a False reason for the denial, made our guests feel very unwelcome. We are frequent diners at this restaurant and were surprised by the terrible customer service exhibited by the hosting staff.

We went for my wife's birthday. Brought our own champagne (as they don't carry the one we like) and paid $20 corkage (I had checked in advance, so it wasn't a shock). The waitress (Hannah) was great and the food was excellent. I had the prime rib (they are known for this and it was good), but the surprise was the shepard's pie my wife ordered. It was EXCELLENT! I'll probably order that myself next time.

Chef Emeril Lagasse reviewed this restaurant on an episode of his television show, and that is how I came to make a reservation at Tam O'Shanter. It's been on the L.A. restaurant scene for over 90 years! My husband, son, and I enjoyed a Thursday night dinner at Tam O'Shanter. We sampled from the cocktail and beer list. The food was terrific - great flavors, and the ambiance and décor charming. The service was unobtrusive and professional. The restaurant lived up to its hype on Emeril's show. I would recommend dining at Tam O'Shanter. Parking is valet only.

Delicious food, friendly and wonderful service. Known for their prime rib...it's juicy and cooked to how you like it. They let me substitute the sides. Restaurant looks like it used to be a big residential home Tudor style. Live music on Fri and Sat nights. There's 4 large rooms so if you want to talk you can request to sit in a quiet area. The bar area seemed lively w/ people socializing and listening to the music. Service is always great very friendly and professional. The ambiance is old school, cozy, quiet at this historic gem. We treated my brother and mother to Sunday Brunch. We ordered the French Onion Soup, Blue Cheese Wedge, and four prime rib dinners. The dinner includes yorkshire pudding, mashed potatoes and gravy, a large prime rib, and either creamed corn or creamed spinach. Horseradish and horseradish sauce is served as well as the most delicious sour dough bread. We are sorry to admit that we were not happy with our server. The Tamoshanter is our family place to go for special events like anniversaries, birthdays and once we came after a ceremony at Forest Lawn. The atmosphere is always wonderful and reminds me of dining in England. The wait staff are very good at what they do and if you're lucky enough to have Mark, you'll have a wonderful time.\n\nThe food is exceptional but you do have to like beef as that is what they do best. After having their signature Chocolate Souffle, we began our home tradition of serving Chocolate Mint Souffle's for St. Patrick's Day right after Corned Beef and Cabbage.\n\nThe Tam has been my go to spot for entertaining my corporate staff as well. It began in the 1980's when my company, Baskin-Robbins International, would host our foreign overseas partners including the English. It always was a highlight and made negotiations much more successful after a visit. \n\n Tradition has a value and the history of Lawry's and the Tamoshanter has a special meaning for me. We normally love the 'Tam, but this night there was a loud crowd in the banquet room with kids running out of control, yet they left the closable doors open. The food was off, too. It's normally good, but the much touted NY Steak special ran out before 5:30pm(!) and the filet mignon replacement (which they did not offer at the same price) was tiny and not very savory. The lobster tail, for $14, was no larger than a large shrimp and the meat was stuck to the shell. I only got about half of it off. Not a good night. Our waiter was fun and engaging, though. The menu features the prime rib for which the restaurant is known. Mine was the 10 oz , ordered medium rare and cooked perfectly. in our party of five, only one person differed, ordering the filet, and that plate as well as ours was cleaned! The beef was juicy and not overcooked, nor fatty as prime rib can easily be. Our waitress was energetic and cheerful. This is the second time I have tried Tam O'Shanter, the first time was just as bad. I gave them a second chance thinking that it was just a isolated experience. It is was not an isolated experience and I blame that on the management. It is far from the Lawry's experience. The Carvery has a better Lawry's experience than Tam O'Shanter. If you are only in it to look at the really nice things they have spread around the restaurant you will be happy. If you are expecting a Lawry's experience go to Beverly HIlls. If you just want a nice prime rib meal go to the Carvery, it is half the price and a far better experience.

The Tam O Shanter is just plain dependable... dependable for an unforgettable meal, and an unforgettable experience. I was originally a fan of Lawry's in Hollywood, which is of course a great restaurant, but the Tam feels more personal and more about the food (which is spectacular) and the spectacle of the 'cooking at the table.' I go to the Tam regularly, and \nbring family. We are always impressed with the service, the food... and of course the \namazing Scotch Rarebit!

This is a gem, for sure. The Tam is a mainstay in Los Angeles history and culture, and for good reason - the food is delicious, the service is fantastic and the setting can't be beat. As soon as you step through the doors you feel like you're in a pub or restaurant in Scotland, except for the american accents in the staff. Come here for warmth, comfort, charm and a very, very full belly.

We've been coming to Tam O Shanter for years. We almost always celebrate birthdays and anniversaries at Tam's. I love the Toad-in-a-Hole, but every dish we've tried has been great. We took my in-laws there as a belated birthday/anniversary present, and they were still talking about it the next day. They can't wait to go back! The creamed corn and Yorkshire pudding are my favorite sides. I actually don't like prime rib, but the filet mignon did not disappoint. Next time we go, we want to try their sandwiches in the bar area.

This restaurant transcends time and place. If you wish to feel as though you are back in the 18th century and in Scotland, this is it. Although our favorite is the Flag Room by the fireplace, there is impressive authentic Linen Fold Paneling in Bonny Prince Charlie (main) Room. Finest Scotch, Toad in the Hole, Welsh Rarebit and the finest cuts of prime rib Lawry's Restaurants is known for. I also love their Creamed Spinach. Always enjoy the ambiance of the Tam O'Shanter... service was great....Jackson was friendly, professional and met our needs. Our starter martinis began our meal experience. We each had the Caesar salad and then the Tam Cut of Prime Ribs with a glass of Pinot Noir. The Prime rib was done perfectly and we thoroughly enjoyed it all. We were surprised that the usual salad that has come with the Prime Rib dinners no longer did and consequently, ordered the separate Caesar salads. We shared the big CC Brown's Hot Fudge sundae with some coffee --yum !. Our BD sweet of the English Trifle is always a nice finishing touch. There were several folks in the dining room where we were seated celebrating birthdays and anniversaries. It was a festive evening of celebrations at the Tam !

We had such high hopes for Tam O'Shanter ... have been wanting to come here for a long time, and finally set a Friday 'date night' to check it out. Despite some mediocre online reviews, we thought, 'how can you mess up pub food'? Well, I've eaten a lot of pub food in my day, and I am sorely disappointed to say this was probably the worst. I had the Toad-in-the-Hole. The first brought to me wasn't even warm (I'd read this complaint by other online reviewers), so I said something to our server and she seemed genuinely surprised and promptly and cheerfully replaced it w/ a hot one. But the 'filet mignon' was sparse, which wasn't too disappointing b/c it was the toughest 'filet' I've ever had. There were too many mushrooms (to make up for the lack of meat?) and the gravy was bland. The Yorkshire pudding it was served in was also bland ... and dry. My husband had the Fish and Chips, which were ok, but nothing to write home about. Given the prices, which are quite high for pub food, there is no excuse at all for the poor quality of food. On the positive side, the service was terrific ... our server was cheerful and accommodating, the bussers were attentive and pleasant, and the hostesses were friendly. I had a Guinness at the bar beforehand and the happy hour prices are good; I wouldn't, however, recommend the Guinness here (it's better in a can, and I never say that) ... but there are plenty of other CA craft beer options and it is a full bar. Bartenders were friendly. I saw a few orders of hamburgers going out, and they looked good. Despite everything negative I have to say about the food, I love the ambience and friendliness of the place and I would go back for happy hour and maybe try a burger ... but a night out for a nice dinner? No. At least, not until they figure out how to make decent pub fare. And I really hope they do.

I have been going to the Tam O'Shanter for almost 25 years and, unfortunately, have watched it deteriorate over the past few years. The food was always first rate and a good bargain but now I'd put it on about the same level as Sizzler. I ordered a Caesar Salad and what came was not like any Caesar I've ever had. It had kale as the main ingredient...really?...kale in a Caesar salad? The dressing was tasteless but I'm sure it was healthy. I ordered the Tam cut of roast beef which came with mashed potatoes and gravy, as well as with creamed corn or spinach and what they laughingly call a Yorkshire Pudding. The latter was tough and tasteless, the gravy on the potatoes tasted just like it came from a can and the meat was impossible to cut...even with a serrated knife. A good quarter of the meat was wasted as fat and gristle. The creamed corn was very tasty. My companion ordered fish and chips. When the dish came to the table the strong smell of fish was overwhelming. He also ordered Welsh Rarebit which tasted exactly like Cheeze Whiz. I am so sad that this fine restaurant has fallen on bad times....especially since the prices seem to constantly be going up. I doubt if I will return.

I love to visit this old time place as it has the feel of old school attitude, the food is impeccable and one of a kind people. The atmosphere of the tartan knits all over the walls and the costumes they were are neat. I love the bagpipes wandering around during the holidays. The service is quick and once you order the food is at your table within minutes. They have won numerous awards for the atmosphere especially during the holiday season. The music is wonderful as on the weekends they have a band that plays in their lower lobby and its always a good time. Even the food runner are hospitable and jolly when they interact with the guests. I understand the Walt Disney used to have his own table there and was a frequent guest. He would write notes on the tables and it is still engraved. The fireplace is a hot place to sit around as we wait for the table/reservation. There is also a sandwich bar for lunch time or just a quick grab of some great food. The CC brown trademark is a staple at desert time as well as the signature cake items which take time to cook. The staff is always friendly and willing to go the extra mile to assist guests or just answer a question. They have a wonderful loyally program linked to other restaurants such as Lawry's which give you points toward your dining adventure. I feel like a child when I go there as the laid back atmosphere with the high chairs and the cozy family feeling. I feel like I am sitting in my grandmothers home enjoying a home cooked meal while conversing with family. I can also be reading a book as I sit and converse with family. I enjoy browsing the early replicates and the extensive Kentucky whisky display when you first enter the building. Its been around for 70 years and you can tell that they want to preserve the building/mood for as long as possible. There is a landmark sign on the building. Everything is pristine and no small detail is missed when dinning at this fine establishment. Never is ther

We have been Lawry's VIP members since the late 1990's and I was so excited to spend my first Mother's Day at our local Lawry's restaurant as it has been an institution since the 1920's. This time, sad to say, was definitely the last time we will ever eat there again. This experience left such a sour taste in my mouth, in every sense. From the second we sat down our waiter sadly regret to inform us that half the menu was not available due to selling out of certain items. For a restaurant that has been in business for so long, how does a manager not know sales trends for a holiday? To top it off, the food was questionable AT BEST. How sad that during such a special holiday, I felt like we were treated like mere patrons in a cafeteria, being fed slop and packed like sardines at a high traffic table. I have never been more disappointed in my life. I can honestly say that we will likely not visit another Lawry's again after all the years of our patronage. Save yourself the misery and spend the money on a worthy restaurant that appreciates your business. Days later I am still incredibly upset with this experience as a whole.

Had to take 1/2 home for late night snack! It was Great!!! I pray this place retains it's old fashion charm & atmosphere, and doesn't get 'run over' and 'abused' with the loud & trendy crowd that would scare off the faithful old comers and raise the prices to the absurd. It has done so well for so long, with just keeping it classy, I hope it never changes, it would ruin it, as well as the original idea of the place.

The inside of the place is beautiful and the food was fantastic. The service was a bit strange though. We made reservations for 8.30pm, four of us celebrating my birthday. As the night progressed it really seemed like they wanted to shut down for the night.\nFirst we were sat right next to a family with children (this is a restaurant but it has a bar/pub vibe) while there were tons of empty tables, entire rooms available. So I don't know why they put us next to a family.\nThe waiter was very nice, but we ordered a cheese plate right away, we even waited 10 or so minutes to put in our order. Next thing we know, we get our dinners and the cheese plate (appetizer) comes out after.\nHe never came back to ask about more drinks (we would have bought more).\nThen at the end, he brings out a little birthday dessert with a candle in it. This is the first time in all my years of birthday dinners where we only were given one spoon. And he leaves and doesn't offer anyone else a chance to order a dessert, so they all have to sit silently and watch me eat my little parfait. \nWe get ahold of him and ask if the rest of us could order dessert and he informs us the kitchen is closed!\nSo there were some real misses in what was probably around a $500 bill. At that price point you really want to feel like you're being treated special, and we didn't get that vibe at all.

We love this place. Rich with historic tales and the interior is great to gaze upon. You see something new every time. Whether in the restaurant or bar area - the experiences are always fun and too quick. Lots of great menu items. When you could just order sides, that goes to show you it's tough to make a decision!

I love great Prime Rib and Lawry's Prime rib had no opening, so I booked my 2nd favorite prime rib place! It was my 23rd anniversary and when we were seating, the hostess actually mentioned that it was our anniversary, which I was pleasantly surprised. The food was great and we even received a little strawberry shortcake at the end of the meal to celebrate our anniversary.\nI also forgot my husbands gift on the table and when I rushed back to get it, the busboy had it in his hand and he was on his way to bring it to me!

The Prime Rib dinners were delicious, the Customer Service was Great, and the soufflé was delicious. \nThe only thing I was disappointed in, is that I specifically told them I was taking my Sister out for an appreciation dinner and mentioned it when I reconfirmed and when we arrived and nothing was mentioned. \nHowever, I would return, but not for a special occasion.

Hadn't been here in many years, but it was a great place to celebrate a special thank you with 2 friends - even though I'm a pescatarian. We had heard there is a new chef and he has updated the menu so the non-meat-eater has great fish choices while the prime rib continues to be the choice for others. Excellent cheeses as starters and fabulous desserts - we had chocolate souffle and a banana cream concoction. Staff cheerful and attentive. Nice when the old venerable restaurant keeps up with the times and continues to provide great food and comfortable ambiance. We'll go again!

The dinner at Tam O'Shanter is not modern or trendy, but that's not why you go there. The atmosphere is charming, the food is classic and delicious, and the service is gracious and attentive. The service was not what we expected. We were seated and no one came to the table for at least 7 minutes. Finally brought our drinks and then finally took our dinner order. Our meal was finally arrived 15 minutes later. It just took to long to have order taken and serviced to us. People around us came after our group (4), order was taken and the food arrived after ours. We had our 50th Anniversary Lunch here and we were very happy with the service. We usually eat at the Tam a couple of times a year and for at least 30 years +. Have never had a complaint before this time.

This was my friend's first time at the Tam O'Shanter. The place has such character. By sheer luck, we were seated at the late Walt Disney's favorite table. That really helped to make the evening special. The service was excellent. Overall, the food was delicious as well. My only comment would be that the Scottish Salmon was quite dry. But the prime rib, as always, was delicious. As we were leaving, we stayed to watch the live band play. Great group with a unique sound and very engaging.

While the menu is much improved over the last few years, it would still be nice to have a regular steak on the menu---not everybody wants prime rib. Also a few more interesting vegetarian and seafood options would round out the menu. That said, the Tam always has such a cozy old fashioned atmosphere and old school service---in the best possible way---it's always a treat. The bar feels like an old pub in the middle of the UK if you like that type of thing.

The evening started perfect. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. Then after our dinners were served He disappeared never to be seen again. When We finished our meal the bus staff cleared our plates and We were left sitting there for at least 15 minutes without any attention. I finally waved over a bus person and ask Him to send our waiter over with our bill. He instead suggested that He would handle cashing us out and took My credit card. He returned with the bill and charge slip. I signed off on the charge and We left, and as I stated, We never saw our server again. The cocktails were perfect, the prime rib the best you can find, but the service diminished Our dinning experience.

We were at the Tam to celebrate my wife's 17th anniversary of her 29th birthday. At the table next to us was another family of 4 who were brand new to the Tam, so they asked us what was good.\nWe started with a cheese plate. They rotate the cheese selection so there's usually something new to try. The cheese plate took a while to come out (after my son's French Onion soup), so we were still in the midst of it when our food arrived. Obviously, the prime rib is excellent, as long as you're good with it a bit red. Well done prime rib is tough, even when well prepared. I passed on my usual Toad in the Hole and got the roasted organic chicken which was very tasty and nicely presented. As usual, we got their chocolate souffle which was excellent. It would have been nice to actually get a candle in the souffle (we've gotten that in the past), but we still (poorly) sang Happy Birthday and dug in. Our server was very attentive, so we really have no complaints.\nThey are very service-oriented at the Tam. Our neighbors ordered a cheese plate by pointing at ours, but didn't get one of the cheeses they wanted. Our server made certain to get them a serving of that cheese (complimentary of course).\nBottom line: Prime Rib + Souffle at a reasonable price, and a pleasant dining experience that you don't have to dress up for (but would not be out of place if you did).

Great food, tasty cocktails. I only had one gripe - we made reservations intending to eat the Valentine's prixe-fix special, even though that menu hadn't been released yet. Then when it came out, it had foie gras on the menu, which was just terrible. it really put a damper on the whole thing. We ended up settling on just some other food on the menu which was delicious, but it was really upsetting to be forced off of the special menu due to the restaurant insisting on including outright torture and offering no substitutions. I might suggest allowing for substitutions in the future rather than confronting your guests with disgusting animal cruelty.\r\n\r\nAside from that initial huge bummer, the food was very tasty, and the cocktails were great. Given how upset I was at the presence of foie gras on the menu, they maybe deserve extra points for providing a good enough meal for me to walk away happy at the end of the meal.

When a restaurant has been a favorite for nearly 100 years... it's worth the effort to find it... and enjoy the livin' daylights out of it!\n\nWhile prime rib is the specialty of the house... I always 'settle' for filet mignon. Perfection.\n\nI suppose I should be grateful that our server kept interrupting our conversation... particularly as we took forever to enjoy our pre-dinner drinks and appetizers (three appetizers... bacon wrapped dates, meatballs, and scotch rarebit)... all of which were wonderful). Still... a more graceful approach would have been appreciated.\n\nIn addition... our server kept looking at my guests for direction... when I had made the reservation. It was just as if I wasn't even there. Seemed to be somewhat odd...\n\nAll that said... it was a wonderful evening... exactly as we had hoped.

When we asked to be moved, were told there were kids in every room but 'they' were almost finished. 'They' hadn't even received their entrees. How about putting all families in one room?\n\nPeriodically temperature dropped more than 10 degrees and we thought it was an open door but it was just the air conditioning blowing right on us - you could see the décor flags waving in the wind. Asked that it be turned off but it continued through the meal. Prime rib ordered medium rare was nearly raw throughout. Prime rib ordered medium was an end cut so very well done on one side. It's a pricey meal even without salad. Had hoped for a memorable evening for our guests but was very disappointed (and embarrassed).

We were a group of four, taking my Mom, visiting LA, for our first time at the Tam O'Shanter. The décor and atmosphere were old-school and charming. We were led through room after room of Christmas decorations, holly and pine, glittering lights--and then we ended up in a glorified broom closet. Actually, it was a fenced-in and covered porch with exactly one other table occupied. Two older women were there. They looked miserable. I wanted them to be escorted, along with us, to the happy, large, warm room through the arches just a few feet away.\nIs this the way Tam treats older women? \nWe asked to be switched and were told NO, we need to 'balance out' the rooms. So will you balance out my check as well and charge me half-price, since we are getting half the experience? Finally the hostess went to check and returned several minutes later. She looked embarrassed and told us of course we could sit at the OPEN table for four in the happy room.\nToo bad they didn't do that for the lonely duo as well.\nNot nice.

Good amount of good fish, but would have been good if hot and crispy and juicy instead of lukewarm and soggy. Dessert: bread pudding. Not good. Again, bland and thick. My husband and I had to spend Christmas apart, and were looking forward to celebrating on New Years Eve. Knowing this, I made reservations through open table in November. Despite this very advance reservation, they seated us in the very back corner of the restaurant, in a side room next to the busboy and bar cart. When I requested we be moved to the main room, the hostess refused, even though there were a number of open tables for two. Curiously, we had this same experience at Il Cielo when I made reservations through open table. Perhaps restaurants save their less desirable tables for open table customers? If so, open table please take note.

The Tam is an inauthentic Scottish Tavern and a completely authentic LA landmark. It is a festive spotted that looks straight out of 1930s Disney (which makes sense since it was one of Walt's favorite spots). At Christmas it is packed with families enjoying the carolers who roam the warren of rooms taking requests. My family makes an annual pilgrimmage here for a holiday dinner and we always have a a great evening. Advice on food: this place is all about the prime rib and the stiff drinks. Don't stray from that. Just get the prime rib, tam cut. It is great. Everything else is just OK. And order the soufflé for dessert. The ale and hot sandwich bar (featured on Mad Men) are also amazing for lunch. This last holiday there were two slight downsides in terms of service. On busy nights you often have a wait for your table, but you can take solace in the bar. But this year, they seemed to be understaffed. We waited for 15 minutes at the packed bar and the bartender didn't look our way once. We finally just gave up -- the restaurant probably lost about $120 in drink orders because of this. And our waitress was not in the holiday spirit. She was rushed, upset that she had to repeat the specials (to a large table in a noisy spot), and never asked how we were doing. (Again we would have probably ordered an additional bottle of wine, but she never asked.) But the prime rib was still delicious....

The Tam O'Shanter is one of my favorite special occasion places, particularly during the Holidays for the decorations and carolers. I've been twice this month to celebrate with friends for that purpose. I ordered the short ribs and holiday salad both times. Others in my group also ordered the short ribs and we all agreed they were excellent; shredded easily with a fork and had wonderful flavor. While the short ribs were excellent on both visits, I noted that the walnuts in the salad were listed as 'candied' and they were not, on either visit. I can forgive that oversight, but what I can't is how long it took us to get our food during my second visit. \n\nWe were a party of 5 on a Wednesday night at 8 PM. We were seated at 8:15, gave the server a drink order and ordered dinner when he brought the drinks. Our salad didn't arrive until an hour later. The server offered the explanation that the salad and dessert person were the same and the kitchen was backed up. Our main courses did follow in a reasonable amount of time and everyone enjoyed their short ribs, but by then it was nearly 10 pm and the salad delay was a distraction that continued to plague our evening. When the dessert menus were passed around we realized the server had not asked whether we wanted to order soufflés, which is usually mentioned upon ordering as well as sometime during the meal since they take longer to prepare. \n\nThe Holiday décor and carolers were wonderful, the short ribs delicious, but the service and explanation about the kitchen did not meet the standards of what we've come to expect. And since that was off, maybe the walnuts not being 'candied' is not just an oversight. Going here is a tradition, Holiday and otherwise, and the carolers are wonderful but the rest just might be losing its edge.

My mom had been very ill and in the hospital for several weeks, including her birthday which was December 6th. I am her and my father's caregiver. I had a bad case of pneumonia that lasted nearly a month which happened to include my November birthday as well. It was a big one for me, number 40. We postponed a nice meal out to celebrate. My sister flew into town from out of state and this was also going to be dad's last meal out for some time, as he was having brain surgery (a shunt put in) the very next morning. So, it was a BIG DEAL! We had a 2 pm reservation and pulled in just before 2. Unfortunately, we had to wait a bit on the busy valet. Dad has an electric wheelchair and the van has a lift and it takes some time to get him out of the car and into the chair and to operate the lift. We also had to get mom's walker out of the car and help her inside. We walked in the door at 2:14, which, yes, was late, but neither my sister nor I could walk away and leave the folks to go alert the staff we were headed inside. Each parent needed us physically to help them and they cannot move quickly. When we got inside, we were very curtly informed that our reservation was not saved for us. So, we asked if they could please find us a seat. The gal sighed and rolled her eyes and turned to speak to another woman, the manager, perhaps. The other woman said loudly: 'Oh, so they FINALLY decided to show up, huh?' To which my sister spoke up and said, 'Yes, we finally showed up.' The first gal just said, oh okay, right this way and seated us. I proceeded to excuse myself to the restroom and sob. It was so difficult to get all of us there and (relatively) healthy in the first place, and with dad going in the next morning for surgery, without knowing if he would even be home for Christmas, this was our chance as a family to have an enjoyable meal out at what USED to be our favorite place to eat. There was no apology and no kindness from the staff at all.

I love to go to Tam's every year around December to see the carolers. Best to book a month ahead of time through open table. I parked at Valet $3.50 and all company must be present before getting a table. They will allow only 15 min to the reservation if you are late. The staff are friendly and cheerful. I highly suggest their prime rib with cream corn and chocolate soufflé (must order first). They also have fish and chips or salmon or toad in the pole if prime rib is not your choice. The carolers go to each table and request songs which is my favorite. They also sing in the bar area too. Best to make reservation around 5pmish because if you book later in the evening, you will wait longer for a table even though you have reservations.

During December the place is decorated very nicely and the dickens singers go from table to table singing requests of those dining. The food is excellent, known for their prime rib cooked to order. The spinach, yorkshire pudding and potatoes are very good. I really enjoy the toffee sticky pudding with both carmel and vanilla sauce. The chocolate souffle is excellent as well. I go there every year for my birthday. They started to go down hill last year but they have turned things around and are excellent again. They have redeemed themselves.

We have been coming to the Tam for over 20 years, we are VIP members and have always enjoyed it. However our last experience was different. The food was not hot, and the prime rib was not 'how it used to be' it was tough and dry. This is very unlike the Tam. The music playing in the background was annoying......it did not go along with the old fashioned pub feel. And to top it off, my biggest disappointment was with the chocolate soufflé . I Love the soufflé and have come here many times just for the soufflé ......but, as soon as I took the first bite, something was different. The flavor and texture were off. I told the waitress and she explained that the reciepe had changed!!! How could you change such a thing!!!! Nothing was wrong with it! It was tasteless and too wet. I am so sad!! It was litterally my most favorite dessert anywhere......now it's changed! If you don't bring back the old recepie, please send it to the VIP members so they can make it at home! Also, our waitress didn't need to wear such a low buttoned shirt....please keep em' covered! I don't appreciate having them at my husbands eye level. Overall.....I'm hesitant to return to my favorite restaurant due to the disappointments we faced.

Part of the Lawry's family, it is a great place with great decor and great service. The prime rib dinners include their wonderful cream corn or cream spinach and Yorkshire pudding, so it is a full satisfying meal. Just make sure to leave room for their famous CC Brown's hot fudge sundae and the almonds on top are extra crunchy that just makes for a great dessert. They also have a sandwich station in the bar area at lunchtime where you can get a prime rib sandwich or even a plate. They even have live music in the bar area in the evenings.

Reading restaurant reviews in popular magazines is always entertaining. The restaurants on such lists come and go from season to season to try to boost readership. The real test of a fine restaurant is its longevity. The Tam O' Shanter has been around since the 1920s and diners have been returning there over and over down through the decades because of its fine food, very friendly staff and its GREAT atmosphere. I made reservations 2 weeks in advance for my wife's birthday. Requesting the Walt Disney table as first choice with John Wayne table the second choice. We got the John Wayne table.\nMy wife had a glass of wine and I had a Moscow Mule [served in a copper mug] to get the evening started.\n\nWe go to the Tam for Prime Rib as it is hard to make for two people. My wife had a Cesar salad [a bit bland] and I had the French Onion soup [full of gruyere cheese and piping hot] as appetizers. Our cuts of meat were tasty. The Yorkshire pudding soaked up the au jus.\n\nI utilized a gift card and Rewards points that included a complimentary soufflé for dessert.\n\nThe ambiance is nice at the Tam. A trivia contest in the bar area was a bit annoying as the noise spread throughout the dining area. Service was reasonably attentive.\n\nFood was very good. Ambiance gets a demerit for the trivia contest noise. Not an inexpensive evening as the meals are approx. $40 per person, salad and soup are ala carte and birthday dessert would have been an added expense without the Reward coupon. Special occasion warranted the cost for the evening.

I cannot emphasize how much salt we fely we injested.....not worth it.....they should ask re salt levels so I give in nearly a poor grade.\nAnd then we had a table adjacent to us where the 6 of us could not hear one another...then they left and despite people still being at tables in our room, it was very very quiet.....the adjacent table were loud obnoxious slobs.

We thought the choice between Lawry's on La Cienega Blvd or Tam O'Shanter in Silver Lake (sister restaurants) would be an equal choice but, alas, we chose wrong. Thinking we would have a sophisticated civilized dinner could not have been further from the truth. Live, pounding music permeated every corner of the restaurant on Saturday night. We asked the hostess to be seated away from the music and she complied, seating us in an adjacent room but conversation could only be had at a shouting decibel level. The acoustics of the room made it sound like we are sitting in the booth behind us having a conversation with an unrelated party - they were so loud we lived through the history of his budding, droll acting career. As far as the food went 3 out of the 4 dinners were acceptable but my prime rib dinner was horrible. Gristle and tendon ran throughout my whole prime rib. There was not one bite that I didn't have to chew and spit out an inedible part. It was not the experience I expected for a +$200 meal. It will be a long time before I reserve a table at Tam O'Shanter, if ever again. Very disappointing.

I ordered the prime rib and it was delicious. The spicy horseradish really packed a punch. My husband ordered the roasted chicken and it was perfectly cooked. \nBut Tam O' Shanter, the souffle was awful. Being a cook myself, I realize that souffles are ambitious but if you put it on the menu then it must be ordered. You might not care for this but these are the only reasons why I think your souffle failed miserably. \n1. Your cook over whipped the egg whites. So, as they were folded into the chocolate mix they lost the last bit of air in them. Therefore, the souffle failed to rise.\n2. The ramekin was not coated in butter and enough sugar to help it rise.\n3. The oven was too hot or not hot enough. \n4. It lacked chocolate flavor in every possible way. It tasted almost like baking soda/powder was used. You might have used the wrong kind of cocoa. In case your cook doesn't know the difference in cocoa powders and importance on using the correct one. Here's a good read. (http://www.seriouseats.com/2014/08/difference-dutch-process-natural-cocoa-powder-substitute.html)\n\nI'm not a picky eater but I cannot stop thinking about that unfortunate souffle.

Had not been to the Tam for several years. There have been many changes including an updated menu and a much more lively bar scene with great music on the Friday night we visited. The changes appear focused on attracting a younger demographic - which is somewhat achieved. The attractive venue and excellent service has been preserved. The only negative I have is that while menu prices have increased, the quality of food seems to have declined. My Caesar salad was nothing exceptional and toad in the hole was way overcooked - with the Yorkshire pudding crust a dark brown. I did not sent it back because I didn't want to delay everyone else's dinner. We met another friend who had ordered the 'toad' also. She sent hers back. At our table, except for the friend who ordered the very pricey prime rib, no one was thrilled with their meal.

My family used to come here all the time as a great and closer alternative to Lawry's. It seems the quality of food and service has declined. Salads were over dressed and prime rib was cut unevenly (almost like a slice of roast beef in places). Our waiter was very nice but service was extremely slow in general, we had to wait for someone to come by to ask for drink refills. A hot plate was handed to me and my finger got burned, luckily my son was given warning when handed to him.

I understand why Lawry's wishes to make these changes for their benefit but the changes are not customer friendly.\n\nTam was notified of an anniversary at the time of the reservation. The waitress acknowledged the event. We expected a modest dish of ice cream or trifle for the celebration but were offered nothing.\n\nFood was great. Service was satisfactory. My family has been coming to Tam O'Shanter for Easter brunch since 2010. This year was such a difference from past years. The food was way below par. I had the brioche French toast. It was definitely NOT brioche, but very thin slices of ordinary white bread. It was accompanied by a few sour-tasting sliced strawberries and blueberries and about half a tablespoon of maple syrup. The sausage links were fine. My daughter had the California cut prime rib, which was chewy and fatty. Another daughter had the Easter ham, also chewy and fatty. Another daughter had the corned beef hash with poached egg. The corned beef was dry. I understand that the Easter brunch menu differs from the usual brunch menu. Perhaps Tam O'Shanter should return to the regular menu. It's a shame to see this much loved restaurant lower its standards. We will be dining elsewhere next Easter.

I have never been disappointed by the food at the Tam. However, this evening was not the best experience when it came to other aspects. There was a table with disruptive children, and enabling parents, the waiter refused to offer a taste of a food item, so my guest could determine if he could order it and a little thing like water glasses not being refilled, when that was all 2 of us were drinking. At least our birthday boy got his dessert. Thank you!

Very few restaurants that have been around for 90 plus years are still here. Other than the Tam, only Musso & Frank's comes to mind. Obviously, they're doing something right because it is still here. The ambience is lovely and really retains it's historic character. Our waitress, Melinda, was a delight. When we told her we were going to the ballet in Glendale that evening, but would have some time to kill since we were so early, she suggested we go to a used bookstore called Bookfellows, which turned out to be less than a block from the Alex Theatre. Great bookstore, but unfortunately not air-conditioned, so it was very uncomfortable. The menu is small, and there weren't a lot of entrees that interested me, but I had tried my husband's Toad in the Hole the last time we were here, and liked it, so I ordered ithat. My husband ordered it as well. While I initially thought that it wasn't hot enough, once I stirred the filling it was better. We both enjoyed our entrees very much. Portions were large enough so I will get another meal out of the leftovers. My husband initially lamented that there were no potato side-dishes other than the twice-baked potato so he ordered that, not expecting much. To both our surprise, it was really tasty, with some bacon in it. We also ordered a chocolate shuffle, which was absolutely fabulous. This is a good place to go if you're going to the Alex Theatre. It's only about 6 minutes away, an easy drive without needing to get on the freeway.

It is sad when an old favorite disappoints. I had not been to the restaurant for a year or two, and had been very much looking forward to a prime rib dinner this past Sunday night. We ordered 2 Tam O'Shanter cuts and 2 English cuts; the meat on all plates was unaccountably tough and of middling flavor, not at all what I have come to expect over 30 years of dining at the Tam. Oh, the service was pleasant enough, the new additions to the menu looked intriguing, and the decor was bonnie as ever. I would hardly have minded the new prices had the beef been up to its former standard. I did not expect a thrifty meal, but I pushed away from the table feeling as if I'd been had. So farewell, old friend. I shall henceforth seek my prime rib elsewhere.

For much of our adult life (40+ years) we have been blessed to patronize The Tam on a regular basis. A special meal, a family celebration, a group outing have all been reasons to go to The Tam. This time, we went to The Tam for Valentine's Day.\nWhile the name and branding has recently changed, the interior largely remains the same. You are surrounded by Scottish heritage tastefully displayed throughout. You feel as if you're in Scotland and this is further enhanced by the waitperson's attire.\nBeing regulars, we have our favorite entrees: English cut (sliced) Prime Rib, medium and Prince Charlie's cut Prime Rib, medium rare. Side dishes enjoyed were smashed potatoes with choice of creamed corn or creamed spinach. Smashed potatoes are simply smashingly good. If you like creamed corn or spinach, you'll find each evokes wonderful memories of days gone by. Sides dishes are not fancy or fusion-inspired. They are heartily basic fare and in that is their wonder.\nThe Prime Rib was and always is, superb. The only unusual nuance this time around was the presence of a larger-than-usual amount of fat in each cut. I only mention this because in our long running experience at The Tam, fat has always been minimal. Not this time. BUT we simply cut around and the rest of the cut's flavor was superb. The outer layer is rife with flavors from the seasonings (this is, after all, a Lawry's restaurant) and they are mouth-wateringly delicious. The heart of the meat is infused with moist flavors that bathe your mouth in savory greatness. Wow, as usual...as always!\nThe busy night did not detract from the night one bit. It is always a wonderful dining experience to be with the diverse mix of people and groups that find The Tam essential to a good meal and celebration as we do.

The food and service are always about as good as it gets. Tonight, we had an especially knowledgeable server, knew her scotches, her skills and charm were outstanding. We almost always have the prime rib and there's a reason, I don't know if it's the seasoning, the care in selection, preparation, it's just the best prime rib anywhere. I promise myself I'll try some of the other fantastic entrés, but always come back to the prime rib. It's always great, but last night was close to perfect.

We went to Tam O'Shanter's for dine LA on Jan. 24. We made reservations via Open Table. We wanted reservations for 12 noon, but Open Table said that only 12:15pm was available. When we arrived at 12 noon, Tam seated us immediately because it was almost completely empty. The waitress told us that the dine LA menu was only available for dinner. When I saw the menu, the cost was $40. When I saw the Tam's website, the dine LA cost was $35 and did not say that it was for dinner only. We ordered brunch items (corned beef + roast beef hash) and it was mediocre. On our exit, we discovered the bar menu, which looked much more appealing with the sandwiches and platters than the tasteless brunch we had. We have had several prime rib dinners over the years at Tam, and will now only go for dinner. They need to change their brunch/lunch menu to add the bar menu and update it with more diverse choices.

This restaurant has old tme charm with wonderful food and service. It is Scottish themed with various tartan plaids nicely framed. Food is high Lawry's quality prime rib plus some interesting additions like poached apple and walnut salad. Leave room for dessert, their souffle's are yummy. Service is always excellent. The special wine and liquor events have special menus that are expertly created to match the wine or liquor. I can say this is one of my favorite restaurants.

Lovely dining experience! I highly recommend this restaurant.\n\nOur table sat near a large stained glass window that must have been back-lit since it was dark outside and served as a stunning focal point for the room. The rest of the room also had beautiful Old World style decorations and furnature so every angle would be a nice view I feel.\n\nThe waitress asked at the beginning of the meal if we would like the chocolate soufflé since that dish is timed to be ready for your dessert course and I do order that delicious dessert each time we visit Tam O'Shanter.\n\nI ordered for the first time the sweet corn fritters and they were wonderful! The dipping sauce that came with it on the side was too hot for me though but the waitress replaced that sause with ranch dressing and that combination worked great together for my taste. The amount of corn fritters was plentiful too and I had enough to take some home with me. I most likely will return to the restaurant sooner just to get that appetizer again.\n\nI asked to adjust a main menu entry, the Toad in the Hole, to be vegitarian, and it turned out great! What was served is yorkshire pudding, (similar to a puff pastry shell but denser in places) delicious burgundy gravy, perl onions and mushrooms baked inside and I loved it. I'm so glad I asked to make that adjustment. Maybe Tam O'Shanter can even list that on the menu with that vegetarian option?\n\nThe manager came over to say hello reconizing that it was our anivarsary since I had listed that when I made the reservation. At the end of our meal we received the dessert with a lit candle which was sweet and what I had hoped the restaurant would do.\n\nThey also had a special package menu that night that my husband ordered for $40 which was a good value with nice choices. He made one swap to order a larger cut of meat so he would have enough leftovers for a second meal and the waitress accommodated that request.\n\nI look forward to my next visit to dine at the Tam O'Shanter.

I have visited this restaurant many times over the years and overall, I love it. It is a great, historic Los Angeles landmark. However, I was a little disappointed on this visit. The dining room was wide, wide open but they placed my family of four smack up against a very large and noisy group that was celebrating a 90th birthday party. I did not enjoy the extreme proximity and we could not enjoy our own conversation. We rushed through dinner. I was also very disappointed in the food. My Toad in the Hole was not good - hardly any filet mignon, mushrooms, vegetable or potatoes. It was mostly gravy in a large Yorkshire pudding. Very definitely not at all worth the $27.00 the restaurant disgracefully charges for this dish. I know this was, at one time. my Mom's favorite dish here, so I am sure, it was much better in the past. My Poached Apple Salad and Pumpkin Pie were just okay. My son liked his prime rib but my daughter's was mostly bone and fat. My husband did like his trout. The service was good.

Our table ordered Toad in the Hole, Pot Roast and Tri-Tip. Everything was enjoyed immensely! The Chocolate tort was a shared amongst the 4 of us and was a nice topper to the wonderful meal! Had been wanting to eat here for awhile now. We were not disappointed. There are a few rooms that they might sit you in here, but all have great ambiance. I really felt like I was in a nice old pub in the UK. There are options for small and large parties. The servers are very attentive. There's a solid list of adult beverages. The food was amazing (even the bread!). It was a bit loud and you can't escape the sounds of the live act if you want to, but you'll survive. Give the Tam a try!!!

I love the variety, as I am an avid Lawry's Prime Rib eater and visitor. My wife had the same, and it was just as good as the original in Beverly Hills. I had the Toad in the Hole and was pleasantly surprised at the size of it. Tasty bits of meat. My friends loved it too. The Pot Roast was a sure winner, juicy and flavorful. Loved the variety of Whiskey's as well. Will have to try some of those next time.

We haven't been to the Tam O'Shanter in years and we were looking forward to it. A lot has changed. Many of the menu items we liked were gone or changed dramatically. Some of the new items were intriguing, like the cheese and charcuterie, but they seemed to be out of place in a restaurant like the Tam. The quality of the food has not changed, everything we chose was cooked superbly and the souffle still fluffy and delicious. The energy level was also different, it used to be warm and bustling with chickens on the rotisserie, glasses clinking with single malt scotch, laughing and crackling fires. It was more subdued and quiet than we remembered. But possibly it was due to our reservation time, 5:30 on a Wednesday night. One of the other things that was definately different was the interaction with the waitstaff. In the past, the servers knew people, because they were regulars and if you were new, they still made you feel like a regular. Do not misunderstand me, they were friendly, there was just something missing from the interaction. Overall, the restaurant is still a local gem and a great place to have a wonderful meal. There were just small things that we remembered fondly that are no longer there...maybe I'm just being nostalgic.

The prices are too high for the prime rib.\n\nPortions of mash potatoes and gravy very small. We spent 133 dollars before tip. \nThe drinks seemed cheaper, maybe balance food and helping with pricier drinks.

We ordered the chocolate souffle for a delicious ending to our meal. Michael, an assistant wait staff, indulged us by taking our picture at the table as well as in front of the decorated tree and the fire place at the front of the restaurant-something he didn't need to do but offered gladly. I have been dining at the Tam O' Shanter for many, many years, and we have never been disappointed. This visit was during the Christmas season, when the Tam really outdoes itself. Warm and welcoming, the holiday décor carries one off to British Christmases in earlier days. Everyone is treated as an honored guest. Carolers in period dress visit each table. Guests may request their own favorite carol. This quartet knows them all. Food at the Tam has always been delightful, and there were even a few holiday surprises. We brought a bottle of wine with us to the restaurant but we also ordered a martini, which took at least 15 minutes to deliver to our table. Then, within 5 minutes our dinners were brought to the table. The waitress came over to our table and we told her we didn’t have time to take 3 sips of our martinis to which she “fluffed” off saying she thought we were in a hurry. She must have been “blind” not to notice the still full martinis on the table with a full bottle of wine which was opened a little before the dinners arrived. We asked to see a manager who looked like he was living on the street not managing a restaurant. He did a half “a----“ apology and walked away, seeming to tell us it was our fault. Also, the dinners seemed to be very tiny and they looked like someone just threw them on to a plate. Never in all my life have I ever had a dinner costing $38 with maybe a tablespoon of mashed potatoes as a side . We have been going there for years but made up our minds that this was the last time.

We eat at the Tam a time or two each year mostly for nostalgia, and always in December to celebrate our wedding anniversary and enjoy the holiday atmosphere. The Tam has changed quite a lot since last December, a new scaled down cheap looking menu that looked as if parts of it had been made on a photocopy machine. Few seasonal specials on the menu, no lamb, no sassonal salad with candied walnuts etc. It used to be customary for the hostess to ask if we were celebrating a birthday or anniversary, not this time. The bar was packed and I presume that's the direction the new Tam is traveling., there is a new display case in the entrance stocked with bottles of showy, pricey booze. The Chistmas Carolers are still there and lend a little holiday atmosphere, but clearly the Lawrys folks are going for a more informal pub atmosphere. Only thing is, the prices aren't more informal, they've gone up. Food was okay, a bit boring. Had to ask for a steak knife and horseradish for my prime rib. Never asked if we wanted a soufflé. Things have gone downhill at the Tam, sadly.

Our recent dinner there, however, seemed a bit off. According to our waitress, who seemed new and and not very familiar with the menu items, the menu has been changed in some various aspects. For us, it didn't seem the same completely wonderful happy friendly place it once was -- Service was spotty, things forgotten until mentioned, portions smaller all around. And, some of us shared desserts. The chocolate souffle was not very good, nor was the sticky toffee pudding. And, it is all very over-priced, even taking into consideration the fact that we had wonderful carol singers in costume throughout our dinner experience, which is always very nice. We will think seriously before going back again.

TamOShanter is an LA institution - we've been going for 35 years and the food and service are dependably friendly and good. We went this time for our birthdays and were in a celebratory mood. As usual, we were seated almost immediately and the wait staff was on the spot. The salad was lovely, with candied walnuts, and the entrees arrived just as we finished. Barb's steak was good but not the best she'd had, and I'd ordered a larger cut of prime rib than I normally do. It arrived on the bone, and was just OK - the extra volume seemed to be all fat, not more meat. The soufflé was excellent. Most of our recent visits have been to the bar's sandwich counter, and to be honest, the food was better there. But we love the ambience, and service is uniformly excellent. I'll write the food quality off to a busy night, normally it's better.

Every year, between thanksgiving and Christmas, I vist Tam O'Shanters for a wonderful holiday meal in a warm tavern like feel. I love it, it's one of my favorites and everyone I bring here always has rave reviews of the food and ambiance.

Food needs to be served at higher temperature, food comes only warm.

We decided to go out this Thanksgiving, and I must say that overall ambience, service and friendliness were outstanding, but I was disappointed with my turkey dinner. When it arrived everything on the plate was only warm. I asked that it be sent back and the food be hotter; they brought me another plate that was equally warm. My friend had salmon which she felt was overcooked and her daughter had Toad-in-a-hole which was very good. \n\nI think the trick here is to remember that this a Lawry restaurant and to order items that they do best -- prime rib, steak, etc. \n\nThe food was a disappointment, but the experience was not. We had a great time, and I would go back again, but next time order beef. By the way, the house Merlot was quite nice.

I tried the new rewards program and find it does not seem as customer friendly as intended. There is no grace period any more and seems to be stricter on the use of gift certificates. I'll have to check out more next year. The food was good, as the prime rib is the best way to go. I would suggest not ordering the specials, as these are items they are trying to get rid of because it is at the end of their freshness, such as for fish. Also, their brown breads tasted softer and fresher when we first started dining at the restaurant some 20 yeas ago. The food quality appears to have decreased at this restaurant.
