Our entrees of salmon and rock lobster were delicious, but we weren't crazy about the clam chowder (we've had far better chowder elsewhere- it wasn't bad, just too much cream and light on clams and potatoes), the shrimps in the appetizer were very good, but the cocktail sauce was not great. All in all it was still a pleasant evening!

The last 3 times the service has been very slow. The food is very good but one needs a lot of time to wait. Our server was interested in selling expensive dishes and didn't tell us 1 lobster was $78. Also she didn't tell us that we had to order soufflé early since it took 30 minutes to cook so it was too late to order. She said she didn't advertise it because she didn't recommend it but other servers were selling a lot of them. The manager really didn't care that the wait was so long. The bathroom were very dirty and out of paper. It seemed like no one was cleaning them throughout the day or even checking supplies. This used to be one our favorite LA restaurants but not planning on returning again.

Come many times for business dinners in the past, this was the first time I was disappointed with the service. The waiter just did not come by enough. We would have likely ordered double the amount of cocktails had he checked in. The drinks were delivered by another server and seemed to take longer than usual. It was a Thursday and not that busy. The waiter also did not bring a salad that was ordered. He flipped through his notebook to insist we didn't order it, but we just told him to not bother with the salad- he should have just apologized to my colleague who was in from out of state and offer to bring him one right away. Further, after dinner, he simply brought us the check without saying anything. He did not ask if we wanted the check, he did not offer us the dessert menu or coffee. I happen to enjoy the desserts, but at this point I might as well go elsewhere.

We have generally loved Water Grill. Tonight both of our main courses (cioppiono and lobster) were overcooked. And those prices should not include overcooked, chewy seafood. Been coming here for years, but I think we might be due for a change.

Usually go for lunch, but would love to come for dinner and comment on whether you have a Notable Wine List! Found it a little weird that someone came by and pointed out my butter knife and placed it on my bread plate, sort of as if I didn't know. Service was commendable! The Chilean Seabass with the lemon and hazelnuts was extremely tasty - great combination of flavors with the cauliflower puree. Subtle, but really yummy.

I personally had a horrible experience. The service was terrible as we waited a while to be seated and then even longer just to get the check. The filet we ordered was over-done and I expressed my concern but they did not care at all. I also wrote the General Manager the next day and I still haven't received a response. This was definitely a waste of a $100 dollars, and I will never go back to Water Grill.

The prices of the entrees are high, which is to be expected since fish is expensive. However, if you want a side dish such as rice or a vegetable, they are costly and must be ordered separately. The service was also a little spotty. My guest requested that her fish not have capers on it, but when it came is was covered in capers and took a while to replace, even though they just scraped off the capers.

Our go to place for DTLA fine cuisine. We are usually pampered with amazing food and great service. Everyone including the bartenders and wait staff delivered. Sole exception was the greeting/sitting process which was lengthy - over 40 minutes wait on a 6:45pm reservation. The host was very confused/overwhelmed and blamed a special event earlier in the day. With our barkeep's intervention everything was clarified and we were seated. The food was spectacular as it should be at this price point. We will be back to this DTLA classic.

The service and cuisine were great EXCEPT!\nSanta Barbara Spot Prawns were either seriously over priced or portion too small...3 prawns for $42 and only cole slaw as a side.\nThe prawns were female with eggs. The eggs are delicious, but I don't think they should have been taken from the water in the first place. That's another story.\nOur server was charming.\nOn the other hand, the mahi mahi was most delicious and perfectly cooked. Outstanding seafood and variety as usual. Our dinner was great. Only two bones to pick out of this filet:\n\n1. Parking was a mess as the street was a construction mess, no valet and no one to tell us where to go.\n2. Wait staff was very disorganized. The mains came out while we were still eating our appetizers and we had to send them back. Also not to be a snob but at these prices and this level of restaurant, the staff should be around checking the flatware requirements and dirty dishes after each course. We shouldn't have to track them down to remove dishes and give us a fork?\n\nI'm a fan and will certainly come back but these are some pretty simple problems that Water Grill used to nail. I hope they are not slipping like so many other great restaurants after they achieve renown and success?

We went in for DineLA and had lunch. I must say I hadn't been in a few years since the remodel but it used to be my go to spot when I would tell people about impeccable service and great seafood. \n\nThe place looks great now, not that it didn't before, just a little less formal and stuffy. However service has taken a pretty severe step back... like the refresh service is less formal which is fine but our waiter was lackadaisical to say the least and woefully inattentive on a very slow lunch service. We waited for pretty much everything and he also didn't know the menu... I get that lunch service is where you maybe potentially training new staff which again is understandable but they still need to be attentive.\n\nThe food was okay but just that, okay something was just missing , dry bread on the crab cake sandwich seasoning on the fish. I know it was a $25,2 course DineLA menu but we ended up spending much more because we added oysters which were amazing as well as dessert and glasses of wine.\n\nI can't say that I would come back for lunch maybe dinner which used to be my go to but it'll be a while if I do...

We got there 30 minutes early. I was told they cannot accommodate me until 5pm. We are the 1st ones there and maybe 3-4 parties showed up after. Since we have a reservation at 5pm, we are ushered outside to wait.\n\nWe ordered fresh oysters to start but they mistake us with a huge tower. I thought wow we made a mistake but they realized that was not my order and took the tower. The waitress was kind but I sense she is not happy being there. - she's a little snappy at times. \n\nMy hubby ordered 2 rounds of oysters and 8 pieces of long neck clams and 2 scallops and the sashimi place of tuna scallops and something else. \n\nThe bread pudding is the highlight of my meal. The red Texan fish I ordered was blackened to perfection. \n\n\nThere's another guy host that was snappy when my hubby waived him and said hold on a second sir - with an annoying tone. \n\nOverall our food was okay.

I walk by this restaurant all the time and the food and ambiance look great from the outside but I was a bit disappointed. There's a lot to choose from on the menu and some things come with sides and others don't so it was a bit confusing for us ordering and I think our server could have helped us more as we ordered a side of mashed potatoes but my husband's meal already came with mashed potatoes. He was also brought the wrong meal and really hated the first one, not realizing the fish was different. They eventually brought the correct meal and were apologetic but I thought they could have done more to rectify the situation. The restaurant was pretty loud and a weird array of people, some dressed up like us and others wearing jeans and baseball caps. The worst part was sitting next to tables with children. We finished our meal around 10pm and there were families still coming in with children, which is just strange to me. Overall, the food is nothing to write home about, the ambiance is lacking and the service was just so-so and for over $200 for appetizers, entrees and sides, and a bottle of wine, I think I'll pass next time.

Well, Water Grill, here we are again. Another special occasion totally overlooked :( My last review focused on the horrible waiter (like a car salesman) and complete disregard for the special occasion we were celebrating (close friends engagement). \n\nThis time, at least, our waiter was very nice and attentive. However, he was totally overwhelmed. It was 6pm on a Saturday night - & my grandma's actual 91st birthday. She barely made it to this birthday so it was a big one to celebrate! We told them 3 times it was her birthday, but there was no mention of it (no candle in dessert, etc). \n\nMy mom and dad did the DineLA. They both ordered the swordfish. I tasted it and did not like it. It was EXTREMELY salty - it sat on a bed of olive tampenade with some spaghetti squash. The flavors were really a big miss, in my opinion. My dad also ordered some hamachi or crudo dish. He specified to the waiter that he did NOT like spicy food and asked if the dish was spicy. The waiter said the dressing was spicy so he would tell the kitchen to leave it off. It came, and sure enough, my dad couldn't eat it because it was so spicy. He gave it to my husband and I and I, too, couldn't eat it! It was completely inedible - couldn't taste the fish! I informed the waiter and he said it was because the dressing had jalapeno in it! Okay...well...you were supposed to leave it off *sigh*.\n\nMy grandma had her favorite clams and a lobster - she was very happy. My husband and I split a seafood platter, which was, as usual, delicious. \n\nIt took a FULL 50 minutes to receive our appetizers. Reservation was at 6pm, ordered at 6:10pm, did not receive APPETIZERS until 7pm. It was clear they were overwhelmed, but no excuse for the hefty price tag of this meal. \n\nI know one thing for sure - we won't be celebrating a major occasion with Water Grill again! I am sure my husband and I will be back for fresh seafood, but absolutely will not risk another important occasion overlooked. Very disappointing.

The downside of this restaurant is the time that it takes to serve the meal. After you order, your waiter disappears. Then you wait, and wait and wait. And when the food came an hour later, one of the orders was wrong. I stupidly thought that they would prepare her meal immediately but NO we were all finished by the time that she was served. This is not acceptable no matter how good the meal was. It took 2 1/2 hours to eat. If they are trying to create a European ambiance where it takes that long, they need to be up front about it and tell their patrons. Don't ever come here before going to the music center. You'll never make the curtain.

We went for our Sunday family dinner on 1/2/17 and they were more then accommodating to our family. We were a mid size group with 5 adults and 3 kids and 2 of them are under 2 y/o. The last time we were there was back in August so I'm not sure if we had a new waitress, but she was very interesting. She was a little intrusive (she told my husband that our boys shouldn't have what he tried to order them and she also asked about my husband's ethnicity) she was also very talkative, then at times forgot about the table. She offered to refill my tea, but then stopped by the table 2 times w/o it. The apps are always delicious, their crab cakes are the best we've ever had. Then when our food arrived most of it was room temp and my order that she recommended was inedible. The manager came by and apologized for our meal and was quick to remedy it. We normally love this place, their regular wait staff is top notch and their food is normally delicious. I think they had too many reservations around the same time that just slammed the kitchen. Or our waitress forgot to get our food when it was ready.

If you're downtown for a special occasion, or just want top notch seafood - Water Grill is the go to place. They have wonderful apps including manila clams with chorizo, and an trio of uni. Wine list is wonderful! Not a place for kids (no kids menu) - but even then, you can find something that will work if you MUST bring the little ones. A++++

We dined at Water Grill to celebrate a birthday and the experience overall was fantastic.\nWe ordered drinks which were first rate, the best Manhattan ever and I enjoyed the Olvera Street.\nBoth appetizers and entrees were well prepared and delicious.\nFor dessert we found the caramel bread pudding very tasty but the maple cheesecake was disappointing. I had also requested both on Open Table and Water Grill when I called to confirm the reservation to be sure they would write 'Happy Birthday Bob' on his dessert plate. The dessert came with a lit candle but no 'Happy Birthday Bob' written on the plate. I did not say anything at the time as I did not want to cause a fuss in an otherwise wonderful dining experience. When the bill came, the waitress acknowledged that there was mis-communication and they failed to write on the plate. They comped the two desserts which was nice. Over all it was a great dining experience from the table location, to our wonderful and knowledgeable waitress as well as the food.

I expected much more. The location/decor is great, service was mediocre and food was the same - average. For a well know seafood restaurant in downtown LA, again you expect more. \n\nThe location/decor is great - good for groups, but definitely make reservations. Not a private conversation kind of place, as a lot of people pass thru here.\n\nThe service was mediocre because our waitress last Weds afternoon knew the menu, but did not know basics as to check up on your clients at least more than menu drop off/food arrival. Was so difficult to get a hold of her, and again basics - bring a spoon with your soup.\n\nFor a seafood restaurant at this price, you expect perfection but it was okay. I had the sea bass, and definitely tasted a few days old. :(\n\nin any event, won't be going back - plent y of other great spots downtown.

Decor was nice, but the food was bland and the service really bad. I would not recommend the restaurant at all to anyone for any reason. Our dearest friends had just gotten engaged 2 days prior to our reservation. We wanted somewhere extra special so we went with Water Grill. The food was delicious - we shared a dozen oysters, a pound of shrimp, 3 sea urchins, and a few other crudos, etc. So on the food front, it was great.\n\nThe service, however, was pretty crappy! The guy gave 0 shits that our friends had JUST gotten engaged and was the reason why we were celebrating. He didn't even say congratulations when I told him! He acted more like a car salesman than a waiter, trying to get us to order more drinks/food/dessert with the attitude that made us ALL feel like he just wanted to drive up the price.

We are from Texas and visited during our vacation. There were several locals that recommended so were excited and had high expectations. The service at a place like this should be on point. We had 2 servers and neither of them gave us an overview of the menu and recommendations for popular dishes. After receiving our food, nobody came to check on us. My husband's fried fish was still cold in the center. They did take it back and brought another one out, however, the manager never came to apologize or offer anything. I was finished with my dish and my husband still had not received his food. Nobody asked to see how it was the 2nd time. Nobody came to offer dessert. We had to find a manager to get our bill because both serves went MIA. Must husband handed the manager his credit card when he finally brought the bill. At that time, he stated he was not impressed with this place. The manager did come back shortly later and comped our bill. He did apologize for our experience. That was nice of him to do that, however, we would've much rather paid and had a great experience. Definitely will not be back if we ever visit LA again.

Our dinner was...okay. It certainly was not consistent with our previous dining experiences. The poke was a generous portion but lacked flavor & depth. The tuna was inconsistently chopped in huge, odd-shaped pieces that I had to cut into smaller bites. My husband didn't even finish his and he loves poke. The soft-shelled crab was soggy and gushed salted water when you bit into it. The accompanying cucumber and watermelon salad with ginger was without flavor. All-in-all it was a very odd and disappointing dish. The other members in our group had the scallops, which they enjoyed & were plated beautifully. Another had the whole dover sole, which was served as a single filet on the plate...no sides, no garnish. Just a white piece of fish on a white plate. The service was friendly and enthusiastic, but attentiveness was inconsistent. Overall, it was a 3 to 3.5.

We are a couple who come from San Diego to L.A. for the Disney Hall concerts almost once a month. We have tried a number of restaurants in the area (for convience) for dinner before the concert. One, we particularly enjoyed and returned to quite often. Then we decided to try something new. So over to Water Grill we went. This is truly a restaurant to RAVE about. \n\nOur waitress, Zahara, has been there for a number of years and knows the menu and wine list insideout. Plus - she is delightful. My husband had a mixed salad that was just right. Fresh ingredients and a simple , but wonderful dressing. I had the chopped wedge with blue cheese and bacon. Fantastic - but beware - it's big enough for 2 or 3 people.\n \nNext - salmon cooked to perfection with a side of quinoa and roasted squash which my husband swooned over. Being a New Englander, I had to have the Maine lobster roll. It was the absolute best. Bun toasted just right and the lobster subtly dressed, tender and succulent.\n\nWe shared farm fresh organic strawberries for dessert with creme fresh lightly spiked with lemon.\n\nWe have found our L.A. restaurant and will return time and again. By the way, the restaurant boasts a fresh from the water raw bar with a wide variety to choose from.\n\nGo- you won't be disappointed!

The Water Grill used to be my favorite seafood restaurant in the LA area. I hadn't been in over a decade, so I thought I'd try it again for a special occasion dinner. I used to love Water Grill. I have not been there in years. I decided to try it, as it had been a long time. I took a client. I was embarassed that I had done so, because of the food. Here was the 'best' of the experience: the bread and butter, the rice pudding and the service. Here is where they missed: The sides were overseasoned. The soft shell crab was soggy and generally tasteless. The sea bass was mushy, overly saturated in butter and too 'sweet' from the brown sugar. The riccotta with rock salt was suprisingly bland. \nThe server was friendly, inquired as to why our plates were relatively untouched. I tried the sword fish as a replacement meal. It, too, was prepared poorly. At this point, I felt bad about all of the wasted food. When the manager inquired, I acted like it was better than the sea bass (but it wasn't). That said, I saw a few plates go by that looked promising. So maybe we just picked all the mediocre dishes. \nI hope Water Grill gets its act back together. It used to be a lovely restaurant with great sea food. If I ever hear that it's gotten better I'll go back. In the meantime, I am staying far away.

My husband and I were in LA for a medical meeting and our hotel recommended the Water Grill as a great place to get fish. After we were seated we were basically forgotten about. After 20+ minutes we were waited on by a man in a suite - perhaps the manager. My husband jokingly said 'a little bit understaffed tonite' and he said 'you could say that'. He took our drink and dinner order. The drink order which was delivered promptly but it took another 20+ minutes for our food to arrive. I had ordered a fish dish and when I tasted it, it was cold. So I told this man in the suit that it was cold and he said 'fine I will just take it off your bill' and promptly took it away from me without my permission - I am still the customer at that point. He did not apologize nor did he offer to bring me a new dish that was hot. We were treated as if we were a burden. I have worked in the service industry and this type of treatment is completely unacceptable. We were basically ignored and then when the meal finally arrived and it was COLD - we were treated worse. We were told the bar was running behind and the drinks would be out soon. Eventually everything arrived. The shrimp and grits were disappointing - shrimp over-cooked and grits undercooked. The Chilean sea bass was fine. When you spend over $200 on dinner for 2 and are left feeling disappointed, it's a big let down. We had an early light bite Saturday 5/28/16 on our way to the opera. \n\nThe front desk had serious attitude. We were seated for 15 minutes before water came, and another five before a waiter came. The waiter apologized and was pleasant, and he hustled after that. I had octopus and the fritto misto. The octopus was ok -- maybe I've had it too many times. The fritto misto was heavily breaded, greasy, and tasteless. I suspect that there was a bunch of cheap, frozen fish in there. The Water Grill is an institution for the freshest, up-to-date seafood preparations in the heart of downtown LA. We need not go to San Francisco for a satisfying Chioppino. Capitalizing on the freshness only available to a select roster of restaurants, popular renditions of raw seafood, as with fresh oysters from all over the Americas, Poke, Crudos, Ceviche, along with buttery grilled fish steaks, prime meats and imaginatively concocted side dishes are served by experienced servers who make you feel at home at this executive dining room. We live in Manhattan Beach and wanted to get away. So we decided to drive to downtown LA and have dinner at the Water Grill. Turns out to be worth the drive and then some. My crab cake was delicious. However, they got my order wrong the first time. My fiancé did not like his dinner at all. He said the oysters were very small and lacked on flavor. He got the Mahi Mahi and was not a fan (said it was spongy and mushy). Our waiter took our order and that was the last we saw of him until the check arrived. We had to go up to the bar or ask another server.

The food used to be spectacular here back ten years ago when Michael Cimarusti ran the kitchen. Since then, it's just okay especially given the price. Decided to give it a try and see if it's improved. Again, it's just okay. Clam chowder is bland. Black cod was miniscule in size and no sides came with it. The bread pudding was very good.

The seafood was good, but not spectacular. We started with oysters which were fresh. But, the entrees were mediocre. The seabass was tender, albeit the portion was not as big as I expected considering the price. My other guests made the mistake of ordering the beef entrees. Beef was not tender and over cooked. Most disappointing was our seats. The booth we sat at did not seem to have any air circulation. So I was sweating up a storm and had to leave the table numerous times to get air. When I asked for more air I was told they have had that issue for a week and the AC was blasted on full. When I walked by the thermostat it noted 77 degrees. Doesn't seem like full blast to me. Either way the lack of air made it a very unpleasant dining experience. I was used to the old 'stuffy' Water Grill, and did not know it changed. Given the change in atmosphere I doubt I'll come back here for a fancy dinner. More like for drinks.

This is my second visit, the seafood is amazing. We had a platter mixed with oysters, mussels, crab, lobster, etc. it was amazing. I had the halibut and my wife had the cioppino which had a nice spicy broth. They did have slices of bread on the bottom of the bowl, which I've never seen. \n\nIf you're wine lover, they have an amazing wine list, it covers just about anything you can imagine. Additionally, they do not charge a corkage so if you bring your own wine they're happy to chill it, open it, or decant it for you.\n\nIf you going for a show plan on getting there about 5:30p, that'll get you out by 7:30 and you'll have plenty of time to make it to the theater.

Update: Since my review below, the General Manager reached out to me and more than made up for the service we received. This restaurant seems to really care about the feedback from their customers. I am willing to give it another shot and have changed my review for customer service from 3 stars to five. \n\nWe ordered the oyster sampler and 1/2 lb of the shrimp, soup, Brussel sprouts, chicken, and miso cod. The oysters came out first, then soup, and then there was a super long wait for the rest of the hot dishes. What happened to my shrimp? I asked the waiter about the shrimp, turns out he forgot to submit the order. He rushes off before I could say anything else, and the shrimp finally comes after we finished all the hot entrees. The chicken and Brussel sprouts were good, the miso cod was boring. The shrimp is a cold appetizer, so that was weird. He comes back and asks if we to see the dessert menu, I said no, the shrimp was the dessert. He laughs and said he will take care of us. What does that mean? He comes back with the bill and there is no discount for the late shrimp or anything. I probably won't come back here again.

And did not get our requests fulfilled because staff could not or dos not notice us.

Starting with the bar service and then moving on to dinner service. The cocktails we ordered were not good at all and one of our guests waiting 10 minutes to get her drink. Dinner service wasn't that much better. How difficult is it to order coffee after our meal? The food was very good, although I noticed the next day when I ended up having a lunch meeting at the same place, that the lunch portion of the Scallops was actually larger than the dinner portion. Isnt that backwards? I had 3 decent sized Scallops at dinner, but my business college the very next day ordered the same dish for lunch and he got 4 Scallops. Just very inconsistent for the Caliber of Restaurant I deemed this to be. I was very disappointed and would think twice before going back again any time soon.

I have been to Water Grill at least 15 times. It is always consistently good, service was excellent. I had the Kamachi, which is similar to yellow tail (hamachi), served rare with a wonderful sauce. It was described as being served on a bed of Brussels sprouts and cabbage, there was only one Brussels sprout cut in half and a 2 inch leaf of napa cabbage. Not much for an entree, so had to quickly order the mac and cheese so I would have enough to eat. Mac and cheese was tasty, but a bit thin on sauce. My partner had the arctic char and it was excellent, from the two bites I shared. Easy to get to the Music Center for theater. Water Grill is an oldie but a goodie. it was by far the best seafood restaurant downtown before the recent inundation of new, hip options, and it stands up today! Excellent fresh oyster menu, great selection of east and west coast oysters, wonderfully fresh even during summer months. I have been here over a dozen times and never been disappointed. My current favorite is the shrimp louie salad, which includes so many favorites - deviled egg, avocado, bacon, and a healthy serving of huge shrimp. Lovely. Their lobster roll comes with two options for preparation, and I'm always so pleasantly surprised by the huge portion of lobster they provide every time! Their daily selection of fresh fish options are always cooked to perfection, as requested. Service is professional, knowledgeable and attentive. Recently, we mentioned in passing my birthday had just passed, and my friend's birthday was coming up and our server surprised us with a wonderful massive warm cookie topped by ice cream, and a lit candle! We laughed, we were so excited and pleased. Great service, always. Thanks for hanging in there, Water Grill! Still one of my favorites downtown.

No, this is actually NOT the original Water Grill, but it is the successor to the original, and it predates the other iterations of the re-branded Water Grill, so it is original in that sense. That is an important distinction, because this particular Water Grill has always taken it's work very seriously, catering to the higher end downtown consumer. \n\nThe menu includes quite a few selections of fresh oysters, mussels, and other chilled shellfish. The Iced Tower here pretty much satisfies ANY shellfish craving you may have. Presentation is outstanding. There are a few fresh fish choices, the Loupe De Mer is a standout from the wood fire grill. The salad is special, the bread is nice, the coffee is rich.\nThe wine list is sufficient enough to find a nice pairing, and the cocktails are very nice.\n\nNot a place for a red meat eater (but I never have tried any red meat here, and don't even know if any is on the menu, so I can't speak on the quality of the red meat, if any. I can say that the seafood is what I suggest you come for).\n\nService is always excellent - never a problem that can't be solved, and very attentive.

My companions were both big seafood fans and started with two different kinds of oysters that they said were amazing. One also greatly enjoyed the seabass as his entree. The other person enjoyed the crabcake, but was a bit disappointed that it was not TRULY a Maryland style as indicated on the menu. (He is from Baltimore.) The caesar salad should be called something else. The only similarity to a caesar salad is the anchovies. It has garlic dressing, nothing close to a caesar. This is not a plus for Water Grill.\n\nAs a fish and shell fish restaurant, I was surprised that the steak was excellent.\n\nThe filet mignon was AMAZING. required no steak sauce whatsoever! My waiter suggested the best wine for the steak; Duckhorn Pinot.\n\nThe corn was a nice surprise. Very tasty.\n\nIt would make me very very happy if the menu or the waiter had an option for another non- carb, green veggie. I am a spinach lover and the fact that a quality kitchen does not have, or chooses not to prepare a basic spinach in light garlic is beneath you. Broccoli is very difficult for some to to digest therefore a spinach or even asparagus would be very nice.

Our pre-concert meal at the Water Grill was sort of a trip to the past - the place fits its surroundings - in the heart of a city business district it is wood paneled, darkly lit, and very much where you'd expect the captains of industry to be wheeling and dealing over a nice seafood lunch or dinner. The seafood was very adequate and well prepared - if unimaginitive. I had the sea bass which was nicely done on a bed of pureed cauliflower with hazelnuts, and my wife had their grilled halibut, also nicely done. We each had a cocktail and a glass of wine, and prefaced dinner with a bland but well prepared ahi poke appetizer. The service was excellent and attentive, and the restaurant was sparsely attended probably because of the early hour of our meal. The tab was $150, which perhaps fits the location.\n\nThat said there was nothing that would make me want to go back. Everything was fully competent, but it was hard finding anything exciting at all about the place.

We were seated quickly upon arrival and our server took drink orders while we waited for the rest of our party to arrive. It was not super busy, but after everyone arrived, we waited and got drinks, we waited an inordinate amount of time for our server to return to take our order, but he never came. We had to ask the hostess to find someone to take our order, and while she was apologetic, our server made no apology when he returned much later, nor did he even really talk much besides offering us the chocolate soufflé for dessert. Beyond that, he didn't even ask if anyone wanted another dessert. He just took the menus away. Our food also took a long time to arrive despite the time that it had taken to get our orders in. I would expect such a pricey restaurant to go out of their way to make up for the delay by offering more expedited service and perhaps a comped item or two, but there was nothing of the sort. On top of that, the food was decent, but not stellar for the exorbitant a la cart prices. We had the fresh salmon, sole, and scallops. Portions were substantial, but again, overpriced. Our party does not expect to return, as we can find better value elsewhere.

The food was amazing, the fish cooked to perfection, the oysters to die for, the desserts, amazing. Really some of the best cooked fish we've ever come across. The service was terrible. We asked for bread when we first sat down because one of our party was feeling motion sickness, she informed us that There were only 3 other tables in the entire restaurant because we were there early, but our waitress was slow, unresponsive, and ignored half of our requests, we told her we were ready to order dessert at least 3 times with the dessert menus in our hands. She was not waiting on other tables, until 3/4 of the way through our meal when she got a very large party. It was almost as if there was a language barrier. I have never had a server who could not make recommendations on a wine. When we asked for a recommendation on the oysters, it took her a long time to finally recommend something, and I think she only did because it was the least expensive oysters. Why do I say that? When we asked about the wine, she said she wasn't comfortable making a recommendation because some of it is quite pricey. We want to come back, but if we choose the Los Angeles location, we will make sure to steer clear of that particular server.

Sure, the vibe was a bit old school, but the experience was definitely first class. After a few visits during the past couple of years, I can say the 'new' Water Grill is more like economy plus.\n\nThe food is good ... not great. Raw bars are defined by their oysters and better can easily be had in LA. Service is a bit inattentive at times, but not horrible. The service staff could take a few tips from the pros that used to be here.\n\nI will say that the salads are surprisingly good. So ... there's that...\n\nI can't say 'don't go here'. But for those of us that remember the good times, it's a big step down.

We had a great lunch at the Water Grill. We had a reservation for an early lunch, which was perfect. The oyster selection was excellent and I was able to choose half a dozen of my favorites for an appetizer. I ordered the Shrimp Louis Salad, which was fresh and light, with dressing on the side, not soaking the salad. Perfect. My colleague had the lobster roll Connecticut style and was raving over the wonderful quality of her selection. We also shared roasted brussel sprouts, another fantastic choice. My colleague was on a tight timeline and our server was very professional and accommodating for our short lunch hour. The ambiance was just right for enjoying our lunch and important conversation. I will be back soon!

Food was excellent despite the service being appalling. There was not one inquiry by our waiter about how any of our food was. When we dine, we do the whole 9 yards: cocktails, appetizers, wine & dinners, desserts, and after dinner drinks. It's not like 'we're splitting the salad, thank you'. But we were completely ignored. Eventually, I flagged down a great busboy who was very helpful. Then, my wine glass had a raised spot of stuck-on food. I took two sips before I noticed and then took my wine glass to another waiter at the bar (our waiter was MIA as usual). And no, I didn't drink the whole glass and THEN complain. I was ignored at the bar. They wouldn't bring me a new glass. I got up from the table again and said 'can I just get a new glass?'. Then the our waiter, another waiter and a captain all held the glass up to the light together (all three of them!) And examined it. Like I was nuts. I will not ever go back. You can find better service at a crappy chain reataurant. Chili's anyone?

Here's my feedback on my dining experience on Monday evening, 22 June. I was actually disappointed with both the food and service. The food was average and the service was below average for a restaurant of this caliber. I have eaten there before with a much better experience in both food and service and was looking for a repeat performance. But it was not to be. After arriving, being seated and getting our water, I had to get up and go to the maitre d' to get the server to show up so we could order, waiting for at least 20 mins. After ordering our food, the maitre d' then came over and said that they were out of salmon, so two people out of our party of four had to order another main course. This was a Monday evening with the restaurant not that busy, so how could they be out of one of their popular proteins? When the maitre d' was giving us this news, he knocked over a filled water glass and empty wine glass onto the table and floor, shattering both and splashing water on one of my party. A good amount of water. When my substitute food order arrived, soft shell crab, it was a bit soggy and on the cold side. It should have been more crunchy. It didn't help that it was sitting on a bed of sliced melons. I did like the broth for the PEI mussels and the clam chowder was good - although both were not as hot as they should have been as well. My wife ordered the spot prawns. They were cold and for having been grilled they didn't have much of a smoked flavor. My key lime pie was average but the bread pudding was very good. We were comp'd the dessert for the inconvenience of not being able to order salmon. I had to keep going back from time to time during my meal to find the server who kept giving excuses for her absence. I probably won't visit the restaurant again because I thought that the food and service should have been much much better for this level of restaurant.

The Water Grill has been a downtown favorite of mine for years. Their raw oyster selection is always large and diverse, strongly recommend for both the experienced oyster lover and newbies. I love their shrimp louie salad - tons of fresh shrimp, deviled eggs, avocado - wonderfully presented with two strips of bacon - an excellent addition. Friends also rave about the lobster roll. Service is always excellent - professional and attentive. Love the booth seating especially - reservations in advance ensure comfortable, intimate setting.

I have loved Water Grill since it opened years ago, and I still do, but I was quite put out at lunch the other day when it took approximately an hour after we ordered to get a lobster roll, and the same thing happened to the diners at the next table. Our server explained that the kitchen steams the lobsters to order, but that really doesn't explain the duration of the wait (it doesn't take 45 minutes to steam a lobster), plus that makes no sense when this restaurant gets a business crowd at lunch. They did comp our dessert to make up for the delay, but still . . . .

I loved the decor and ambiance of the restaurant!! The food was very good but not as good as I had hoped for, though the bread pudding was fantastic!! I ordered the $24 Halibut cheek salad, it was very disappointing. The two little bites of Halibut Cheeks got lost in a massive plate of greens, flavorful but the cheeks were slightly overcooked and so small I felt a little taken advantage of. Overall we enjoyed our evening out together.

She also did not know the wine list or about any of the wine's I asked about. Not good.\n\nThe ambience is nice and the noise level is usually acceptable but we were seated opposite two couples whose male participants got louder and louder as they consumed more wine which was extremely annoying.\n\nWe left quickly after finishing our meal.\nI will return there next time I come to LA and hope for a better experience.

Everything about the Water Grill is good -- except the food. I can't speak to the raw items on the menu, but three different cooked fish dishes were unimpressive or worse. Columbia River salmon was undercooked and yet mushy; black cod 'miso' was overcooked and tasteless, as were the scallops. It had been some time since I had been to the Water Grill downtown; the only people who still seem to care are the servers, who deserved the substantial tip. And the ambiance is nice. But clearly the kitchen is coasting on past reputation. I've had better seafood in 10 other restaurants around town, including Denny's. And the price of one piece of soggy 'cod' (actually sablefish) at the Water Grill would have fed a large family in some of them. Get a chef.

Twenty of fifteen years go this was the best place to have a meal in downtown LA. They had a few chef changes and a good renovation in recent years.\nHowever - very sad to say - this is not the same place anymore.\nThe food had no flavor. First of all - the Alaska King crab nuggets - okay there is nothing wrong and there is no foul smell....however, the texture was chewy....was it over-chilled?\nThen the eastern scallop crude - again it smells fine but it was limp and not lively.\nThen the miso black cod.......okay I could NOT taste any miso flavor at all (unlike Michael Mina's version).....on top of that, the fish itself was not seasoned well before cooking. It was not overcooked - however - there was absolutely no flavor.\nThis place should be the higher end sibling of the King's Fish House empire but last night the quality is like King's Fish House, at much higher prices.\nSo at the end of the day - I paid big bucks for something that was not wrong but also not right at all. The only saving grace was the wine list. Good selections at relatively reasonable prices.\n\nVery sad. Will not go back.

In the past, dining at the Water Grill was special because the food was uniformly outstanding. This time, sadly, it did not meet up to its past level of excellence. My wife had the lobster, which was quite good. I had the cioppino, which was, to put it bluntly, poor. The fish and mussels probably had been simmering in the broth for 3 or 4 hours (we dined at 3:00 pm), and were mushy, at best. I am sure that my entree would have been replaced if I had complained, but we had an appointment shortly after lunch, so no time to do so. I had no problem with the service until I asked for the check, which was slow in coming. I will be back, especially at the Water Grill that is coming to Costa Mesa. I was taking my daughter out for her 20th Birthday and was very excited when I entered the restaurant. The ambiance was energetic for a Tuesday night. It was 'mostly' downhill after that. We were seated immediately and waited over 30 minutes for someone to take my drink order. We figured it would be a while until we saw our waitress again (Monique), so we ordered a couple of appetizers. I ordered the clam chowder (because I'd read such great reviews) and my daughter ordered a wedge salad. I also ordered steamed clams to share. After another 20 minutes, I caught Monique's eye and asked where my drink was. She had obviously forgotten to put the order in. (The clams were small and tasteless, the wedge salad was ok, and the clam chowder was very good.)\n\nWhen our waitress saw that our appetizers were delivered, she came by to collect our menu's. When I said that we hadn't ordered our entree's, she said that 'Oh, I thought that was all you were having!'. Wait....what? My daughter ordered the Chilean Sea Bass and it was excellent. I ordered the Halibut, to get something other than the Sea Bass, so that we could share. The Halibut was as overcooked and tasteless.\n\nThe final disappointment: I had called the restaurant the day before to alert them that it was my daughter's Birthday. They assured me that a little 'birthday pastry' would be provided at the end of dinner. Once it was obvious that one wasn't forthcoming, I didn't want to bring it up in front of my daughter to highlight what a disappointment the dining experience had been.\n\nOnce Monique brought the check, we never saw here again. She wasn't a bad person, I just think she was overworked. $200 for one of the worst dining experiences I've had in quite some time.....

This is my favorite restaurant in downtown San Diego. The food is wonderful (various kinds of fish and shellfish, usually perfectly done), the service even better, the ambience first-class. If you sit in a booth on the western or northern perimeter on a balmy day, the glass panels that are windows are raised up to the top, so the pleasant breezes flow in. You can also watch the passing scene, which is always fascinating. The wine list is full of diverse picks, though wine by the glass is a bit pricey, as are the fish specials. We dine early so the noise level is manageable. The coffee is perfect, but we don't order desserts, so I can't speak to those. The salads are excellent.

It was a nice place but when we ordered the the cold dungeons crab it came looked good but it had went bad it was old and started to decompose with the meat haveing the consistency of paste. The crab they replaced it with wasn't any better . The chopino was good but should have been spicer ? It looked like a nice place but the shell fish was not fresh.

I loved everything about this place- super beautiful on the inside, awesome bar area, and AMAZING service. I really really mean incredible service. Our server always had a smile on his face and even surprised my hubby with a bday dessert and I didn't even ask for it! The only problem was that the two fish dishes we ordered as our dinner were both overcooked. I was surprised considering it's a seafood spot but overall, it was still such a fun night!

We try to dine at Water Grill Downtown every time we come to LA. The room itself is attractive -- dark woods, kind lighting, not quite casual, but not at all 'stuffy.' They serve a wide variety of fish, very nicely prepared, a fairly extensive wine list and a number of craft beers, both on tap and in bottles. They also serve a tremendous variety of oysters, both from the west coast and elsewhere - very unusual. Their sour dough rolls are delicious! This time, hubby and I both got the Mediterranean octopus appetizer, with amazingly tender octopus. Then we split a grilled Australian sea bream, a wonderful, sweet-tasting small-flake fish. Service was friendly but not intrusive, and the meal was well-paced. I look forward to our next trip to LA and another dinner at Water Grill.

We arrived at 11:40 and there was only one other table seated. We were seated right away, however our server took their time with presenting menus and the food service was very slow. Dined at Water Grill while in LA for a business trip. Excited to try this restaurant since a location will be opening in Dallas sometime later this year.\n\nI had an great meal, whole poached lobster and sides. (The server took removed the lobster from the shell). However, my husband ordered the swordfish with spaghetti squash and olive tapenade. The fish was very overcooked and the flavors did to work well together. (The server removed the charge for his meal).\n\nWe tried a new white wine which we both liked. Recommend Jayson. \n\nI would give Water Grill a try here in Dallas when it opens, sometimes you just miss on an entree.

The halibut was great. But such a meager serving of vegetables !! I don't think the restaurant would lose much money by adding even 1/2 cup of vegetables with the halibut. The single, small, layer of corn under the fish was tasty and excellently seasoned. Just not enough!

We were disappointed with our experience. The waiter recommended the Chilean sea bass and 3 of our party ordered it. It came on a rather flavorless cauliflower puree and had a browned butter with a few hazelnut halves that added nothing but oiliness. The sea bass was extremely fatty so that we could not eat much of it. The flavor was basically mild fat with a little flavor. Made the mistake of ordering grilled brussel sprouts that came with big chunks of fatty bacon and water chestnuts, and overall it was very oily. One of our party said it was ok and another would not eat it after the first bite and seeing all the oil and bacon fat. The only member of our party who was ok with his meal had ordered the black cod. Oh, and the recommended appetizer that we unfortunately ordered was a greasy fried assortment of battered seafood and sliced zucchini. We will not be returning or recommending.

Food is just not good. We ordered the tuna burger, fish and chips, shrimp and grits, and miso cod. All but the fish and chips we inedible. Tuna burger was essentially a cold tuna sandwich. Shrimp and grits -the shrimp was over cooked and the grits were milky. \nThe miso cod had a Szechuan seasoning in the sweet potatoes that gave both my wife and daughter, let's just say an 'unpleasant' reaction. \n\nWe sent that dish back and the waiter comped us a very good bread pudding dessert, but overall even with great service and ambiance we won't be coming back.

We had been to Water Grill before and enjoyed it. We were looking for a guaranteed good dinner so went back. Everything started fine, but after our waiter dropped our food, he simply disappeared. It wasn't a busy night, in fact I saw him watching sports on tv and chatting with other wait staff, but he never came to see how our dinner was (my fish was undercooked) or if we needed anything else. I had wanted another glass of wine, but no one ever asked. \n\nWhen he finally came to clear our plates I told him about the fish and the manager took it off the bill, but had our waiter been paying any attention, it could have been remedied much sooner.\n\nI would give them another chance because earlier visits in both downtown and Santa Monica were good, but this night was a big disappointment.

Both fish dishes much too salty. They did send out new, unseasoned orders but by then, neither of us wanted them. Hard to believe fish so poorly prepared. Halibut was fresh but preparing only with olive oil made it far too oily. Appetizers and salad both excellent.

From our entrance to our exit, this was an outstanding dining experience. The ambiance of the restaurant is classic and comfortable. The service impeccable but not stuffy. The food was presented well and so tasty ... the bread at the beginning was fresh, hot and flavorful. The food combinations extraordinary. We were going to see Madame Butterfly at the Music Center and found this restaurant on opentable.com. They specialize in uncooked shellfish. The service was fabulous and the ambience was nice for our 'dress-up' occasion. I made the problem of ordering a filet mignon medium rare and it was way undercooked - I should have ordered medium. This was my fault but we also ordered the Chilean sea bass and while the piece of fish was very nice, it was more than undercooked. I never thought about having to order fish medium well or well done. They were accommodating to cook both more but the fish came back still undercooked and I could not eat much of it. The manager checked a couple of times and at the end took the fish off the check. If I had ordered things cooked more, it would have been 5 stars in every category.

Started with the octopus appetizer and a bowl of clam chowder to share. The octopus was over cooked and had a burnt taste. The soup was very creamy and good. It had four clams in shells. Not the typical clam chowder where they have mostly clams in it without the shell. \nThe sourdough bread tastes like it was made in house - fresh , soft and real sour just how I like it. \nOur server, Kevin is the best. He was attentive, experienced and had a great attitude. He gave as a comp shrimp cocktail to make up for the delay in our main courses. It was absolutely fresh and delicious. \nOur main entrees were far superior - my Chilean sea bass was awesome. Perfectly cooked and melted in my mouth. Hubby had the swordfish! I had a bite and we both agreed it was fantastic!! It was a hefty portion which he very much appreciated. \nIt was our first time so after being disappointed with the first course, we were glad that the shrimp cocktail and our fish dishes made up for it.

This restaurant is a wonderful hidden gem in Downtown LA. A couple feet below ground level, guests enter down into the restaurant thought a small set of stairs. The ambience is fantastic if you are looking for an energetic but romantic dinner, it's unlike the average romantic spots around the area. \r\n\r\nTo start of, I had a reservation for 2 at 7:45pm on Valentine's Day, but wasn't seated till 8:30. This was understandable since it was such a busy holiday and I didn't mind waiting since I just walked over to the bar to grab a drink. It took about 15 minutes for someone to grab my order. One of the bartenders ended up showing another customer some serious attitude... Which he and the manager later apologized for and offered that couple complementary champagne... Yikes. \r\n\r\nOnce we were seated we ordered the Grand Platter, Chilean Sea Bass, and Octopus pasta (custom order). The Grand Platter was DELISH, all the seafood was so fresh. But the entrees we ordered were average... I personally didn't think they were worth the money as much as the Grand Platter was. I wanted a pasta dish, so our server was kind enough to request the kitchen to whip up a special octopus pasta for me that was not on the menu. \r\n\r\nOverall, eating at the Water Grill was a beautiful experience. To summarize it, the welcoming wasn't that inviting. I understand it was busy, but that's why I made the reservation. We had a 8:00 p.m. reservation on Valentines Day and checked in a few minute beforehand. About 50 minutes passed by and I went to check on our table and was told they were still seating the 8:00 p.m. reservations and that's when i was confused. They put me down for an 8:15 reservation and I even showed them my online reservation. The host or maitre d' just looked at it and just said ' I don't know.' That wasn't the type of response I was expecting, but ok. Driving from Las Vegas just to spend some time in Downtown LA at a restaurant I expected would be memorable didn't end or even start that way.

Unfortunately I picked the wrong night to get a steak. The person that usually cooks the steaks was on a different station and my medium well steak came out bloody and actually raw in the middle. Send it back and it came out still bloody with burnt edges. With that said the wait staff and the management were awesome. They were very responsive and I was given a chance to order something else that they expedited for me. Shrimp and grits were just ok but much better then the bloody steak. I had 4 different managers come to my table to apologize which was great, the steak and shrimp and grits were taken off of the bill, and we received gift cards to come back and try them again which I absolutely would. I'll chalk it up as a bad night....it was Valentines Eve so they were ridiculously busy.

I showed them on my phone that Open Table had a reservation in 10 minutes and another in 2d minutes. Kidding aside, some of the best fish available. Traditionally our city's best fish restaurant, still shines after many years. Well prepared standards and great flavors with other fish you might not know about. Still to me one of the best places to eat oysters as well. I have been at Oyster bars that have less selection than Water Grill. Who are they trying to fool there? You can have a nice cocktail, nice glass of wine, enjoy some oysters or some nice appetizers or you can have a great meal. Non fish eaters will be converted and if they don't care to be adventurous, they can have their hamburger or steak. I will warn you, it is not cheap but the quality of fish is well worth the price when you want to splurge and there are multiple price points for those on a budget.

Excellent service! I didn't have to ask for refill at all. Our server consistently checked our table. But food was... just okay. Tuna crudo: tuna wasn't that fresh. Black cod: too oily. I barely touched pork belly which was 90% fat. Strawberry sorbet: delicious. I wish they had more flavor though.

Read previous reviews that recommended the clam chowder, and it was very good but not worth raving about. The Chilean sea bass, on the other hand, was heavenly! Juicy, buttery, tender fish, best I've ever had! Wish I would have found this earlier in my trip, I would have had to go back for another dinner.

Wow -- multiple employee contacts were all fabulous. Both the bar & table servers noticed I had black pants on and immediately replaced my white napkin with a black one -- white lint on black clothing is a pain, so I very much appreciated that. The manager made a visit, food delivery was quick and accurate, and though two of us waited at the table for the third member of our party who was stuck in traffic, we never felt rushed. The food was fantastic and we had a blast watching the raw bar chefs work their magic. Thank you for a fabulous experience!

The reservation went through fine, our table was ready when we arrived. Except, there were open booths. Why would I want a table by the busy kitchen when I took the time to make a reservation a week in advance. Thought the food was WAY overpriced. Example: 2 crab legs, and the only other thing on the plate was a small cup of coleslaw? Waitress was probably new, too many errors to list here.

Got the Chilean sea bass because it got a lot of rave reviews. The truth is that the actual middle of it was undercooked. It was really chewy and fibrous and the dish as a whole lacked a crunch. Though the outside was seared beautifully, it lacked a palate cleanser. My boyfriend got the Niçoise salad which has these amazing green beans in them that would have been a perfect pairing to this dish. The ambiance is delightful but for the quality and price, I'll skip coming back.

My husband and I are huge seafood lovers so Watergrill was obviously an easy choice. I've been here before but my husband wasn't so this was to be an extra special treat for him! Everything from our food to the drinks to the service was impeccable. The only comment I would say is about checking in with the front desk. We were 15 minutes early for our reservation so the host asked us to enjoy a cocktail at the bar (which we did) and he would let us know when our table was ready. 15 minutes went by and still no call so my husband checked in again with the front desk. They obviously forgot about us but that was okay because we were seated at a nice booth seat.

Our appetizers of tuna poke and heirloom tomatoes were fantastic. And that was the last of it because, the air conditioning was broken and we were offered cold towels to cool us down; the service was awful - about 20 minutes after we ordered, a man came to tell us they were out of the fish 2 of us wanted. We changed to another fish. After waiting another 20 minutes - we asked the waiter when the food would be arriving. He told us he would check and then came back to say 3 or 4 minutes longer. After waiting another 15 minutes, we called the manager over and told him we were leaving. We had been sitting for almost 2 hours without dinner. I have never walked out of a restaurant in my life ...but this was too much bad service and passing the buck. Never again!

Water Grill has provided a first class dining experience Downtown since the day it opened. After being away several years I returned to Water Grill with my family for dinner before attending a Beethoven symphony performance at Walt Disney Hall. The service was stellar. The salmon and soft shell crabs were delicious; amazing. The bread pudding desert was spectacular. All for a reasonably fair price. The drinks were very good and we enjoyed our server, she was very helpful with making our dinner selections.\n\nI would give this place 5 stars, but....after making our Open Table reservation we received a call from the restaurant wanting to confirm our reservation (that's totally fine) and asked if we were celebrating anything. I said no, but we would prefer a booth if one was available. When we showed up, there were several empty booths and a few good size tables (for 4) open, but we were seated at a postage stamp size table - the ONLY table for 2 in the whole dining area). The table had a significant wobble and when I complained they sent someone over to stuff coasters under one side. Not cool.

The bummer was that while our res was for 6:30 on a Weds we were on the early side of dinner and the food that we'd ordered was not available. And then, when we chose something else, one of those selections was also unavailable.. So when a 3rd selection was made, the staff thought they should hold ALL the meals which made for another round of tipsy people that couldn't eat all their dinner. Everyone was so apologetic and truly wanted us to enjoy our evening so they brought us extra desserts. We left with such a food coma. All in all, everything tasted amazing and I'm sure that on a Thurs, Fri, or Sat evening none of this would have happened.

The Water Grill has had its ups and downs over the course of many years, but it has nearly always been a reliable place for well-prepared seafood. I had dinner there this week, however, and was extremely disappointed in the food. (The ambiance and service were quite nice.) I started with the ahi poke appetizer; the marinade was so strong and pungent that it completely overpowered any taste of the tuna itself. As my entrée, I had the wild salmon. The salmon was bland, with a watery broth, and it was slightly overcooked. At $42, I should have sent it back, but it was a business dinner and I did not want to disrupt the conversation. Unfortunately, this meal will make me think twice about returning -- especially with so many great dining options in downtown LA now.

I have dined here many times. I live 7 blocks away. This was the first time the food was ill-conceived and not well prepared. The salmon was swimming in a broth that was way too salty. I asked for the salmon to be cooked through. The waitress said they do it rare but would ask them to do it medium. It was not. I was a guest of my friends so I chose not to make a big deal of it One friend's halibut was dry. The other had the squid ink pasta and really liked it. I hope this experience is not indicative of where Water Grill is going. I have had some very good meals there with good service. There is a lot of competition for the dining dollar downtown. I would suggest Water Grill try harder. Perhaps they can make their drinks and wines by the glass more affordable. They are skimpy for what one pays.

I located this restaurant online looking for a restaurant that had a great seafood selection. I was taking a friend for their birthday. The restaurant itself was nice the décor was very nice the hostess was great and efficient as soon as I arrived he seated us. FYI: make sure you make a reservation this restaurant prides themselves on that. I mean its so important the valet even asked me before he gave me a ticket to park my car! Now the seating was terrible. We were placed at the most awkward table it almost seemed like one of those added tables that restaurants use some time to add more seating. I say this because the waiters kept walking by and have to kind of squeeze by. We just were flat out in the way. not only was it tight for the waiters but the guest were using it as their exit path. People kept saying 'excuse me ' so you know it was tight. I can handle most things but I really hate sitting in the way of people when I am trying to eat my food. Our server was okay though it seemed like she kept trying to talk us out of everything we wanted to order. She was a little over eager and though she was knowledgeable she gave up too much information that was really necessary. Honestly I have had better service. My friend felt the same and she is in the restaurant industry as well. The food was okay I had the 3 course meal the bitters salad, Salmon and for dessert bread pudding. They were all edible but I didn't get the WOW factor I wanted. It could have been all the other factors such as the seating and the waitress strange personality that were going on that caused the food experience to be mediocre. I would try the restaurant again just because I believe in second chances but I will just be more vocal about my expectations next time.

I was having a pretty bad day, and I wasn't in a great mood.\nThe valet (which isn't owned by the restaurant) was having issues, so the beginning of this meal wasn't having a great start. \n\nI told the host at the stand my problems with the valet, and they said they'd take care of it. \n\nNow mind you, this isn't my first time at the Water Grill and the food and service has always been great. But they went above and beyond that night. \n\nThe general manager came over to apologize and I told them what happened, and also admitted the bad valet experience probably had to do with my piss poor attitude that day. On top of that, our food was extremely slow to come out. \n\nBut they really did make up for it with amazing service. The food, as usual, was very delicious; but they ensured that we had an amazing night. \n\nI ordered the loup de mer, and it came out perfectly; however I'm not used to eating a whole fish with a fork and knife, so the manager went out and got me a pair of chopsticks. \nFor the long wait for our food, they gave us a very large shrimp cocktail to tie us over (although I personally wanted something to be comped, but #firstworldproblems ;) )\n\nThe managers genuinely seemed concerned to make the end of my horrible day/week into a nice night, and they succeeded. \n\nThey really knocked it out of the park.

Was there for dinner in June 2015. Pricey menu. My son had the sea bass and said it was excellent. I had the swordfish...flavor was good, but the dish was served lukewarm and I like my fish hot. I think it is overpriced for what you get. Lots of groups, and quite noisy, which doesn't bother me but might bother some. If you want a quiet dinner, go someplace else. Server was excellent.

The dinner rolls served (twice) were like rocks and apparently left in the warming oven since lunch. We were going to the theater and arrived at 5:30 PM. It was too early for fresh rolls apparently. Very expensive for such a obvious oversight. It was difficult to overlook such an error. Everything else suffered because of this. They also no longer have a shuttle to the theater. No big deal but we missed having this convenience.

The party of four that I was with arrived at 7:30 pm on a Tuesday evening for an 8 pm reservation. We were seated a half hour late. When we finally were able to order the kitchen staff failed to tell the servers that they had run out of several dishes - Yet this message wasn't relayed to us until another twenty minutes had gone by. When the food finally did arrive it was only vaguely warm. The final bill was incredibly expensive for a sub-par meal.

We had dinner here before a concert at the Disney Concert Hall. There six in our party and we arrived at 5pm because of the concert start time. The cocktails were excellent. The sides we shared were unusual and delicious. The polenta was creamy on the inside and crispy on the outside. The cole slaw, which is nearly always a disappointment in restaurants was crisp and had a little kick. The kale had a yummy Greek yogurt sauce. My sea bass was cooked perfectly and as good as I've ever had. My husband's scallops were also outstanding. The cioppino was tasty but required a lot of work to eat (pealing shrimp and cracking crab). The salmon and the fillet entrees were not hot when they arrived. Seems like a kitchen of this caliber should be able to present six entrees at once and have them all be hot. And they weren't even terribly busy yet. The manager came over to inquire about the problem but offered nothing more than a 'sorry.' This is an expensive restaurant from which I expected better. Our server was very helpful and knew the menu well.

I am very picky about my seafood and have been having trouble finding real 'fresh' seafood. Growing up on an island outside Seattle I was spoiled with fresh oysters and fish that I would catch on my own. This restaurant not only had oysters from my hometown they tasted so fresh it reminded me of home. All the dinner dishes that we had and the sides were excellently prepared and paired very well with the wine that the server recommended. One of the best meals I have ever had in LA! I will definitely be back! It was also my girlfriends birthday and they brought out an excellent dessert that had chocolate ice cream and mousse all made in house. If you are a lover of seafood, this is the place to go!

You walk in to this place, and fall in love with the decor. Somehow they managed with hard surfaces to keep this place on a pleasant noise level! With a bar in the center, it was hard to believe we could have a lovely conversation throughout the meal. Rare find such attentive service, the chilled seafood plate appetizer was outstanding, hard to believe you are in Downtown LA not in a 5* tropical resort's restaurant. The menu is extensive, home made black ink squid pasta not to miss. Knowing we had theatre plans after dinner, our food was perfectly timed to get us out on time. The deserts are home made as well. Look forward trying their Santa Monica location.

Nice wine list, and enticing menu options to start. The server was helpful and friendly. I ordered the beet salad and the Chilean Sea Bass. The ingredients were fresh, and generally prepared well, but both dishes were treated as if they left the kitchen with a heavy hand of finishing salt. The salt lingered long past dessert and coffee service. This could have been a very good meal, since the ingredients were fresh, cooked well, and paired with good service, but the kitchen really needs to control the salt. I would consider returning if in downtown L.A. again, but would definitely tell them to pay attention to the salt.

Can't complain about the quality of the ingredients or preparations. The fish preparations were all well-done, but not inspired or exciting. oysters were great and lobster very unique flavor next time i would just have then broil or grill it with nothing added, my crab cake was delicious all on its own it needed no sauce around it.. however my girlfriends clam chowder was too fussed with and flavor added by chef to what should be a very dependable standard in a fish house, and not flavorized with some spice or something; and her steak was delicious as well.perfectly cooked... so my only complaint would be that there need be no special this or that added to seafood for me, especially paprika etc or anise or something other then its own very fresh and simple flavor perfectly prepared as is very possible at this wonderfully huge expansive restaurant, which is very very attractive in its own right.

I've been going here for more than a decade because I work in neighborhood. It was once one of the city's best seafood restaurants. Then it decided to become a 'fish restaurant,' changing the menu to less fancy, more recognizable dishes. The food is now common and so is the service. This is not my first visit to the WG and while the food is always outstanding, I was a bit dismayed with the host and the huge back-up of patrons just lingering by the entrance tonight. I was greeted with an 'okay we have your reservation but all these people standing here all have reservations before you, so you're gonna have to wait in the hallway or at the bar.' My jaw almost dropped. I almost walked out. Why make a reservation then? And I would have been content with we apologize but will seat you as soon as possible. I had to take a second look was I at the WG? This is so not a Michelin star restaurant anymore. Our waiter was wonderful, but the other waiters helping deliver the meal just literally dropped the plates on the table. The little man poorly delivering our meal literally dropped the wrong meals to the wrong person and even though we said it wasn't ours just walked away!!! I was quite offended but decided not to make a big deal since we had invited my brother to celebrate his birthday and I was embarrassed. The little man ruined our dessert as well. I had boasted about this restaurant only to experience The Crab Shack Service! I regret spending over $400 for such terrible experience! Food is excellent but the host and service really let us down and ruined what we hoped would be a memorable experience. Visit only if you don't mind plates being slammed on the table at full price.
