Pros: The food was good. The people were nice! My room was clean!
Pros: Location of the hotel and excellent staffs.
Cons: We have a room with castle view with two double beds. The room is too small to walk around and there is no space between two beds.
Pros: This hotel exceeds all my expectations in particular it's food. The quality of the food at dinner and breakfast are 10 out of 10! Very high standard. Staff are helpful and cheerful.
Pros: After Ofuro ... free drinks (Juice, flavoured water, coffee, tea, ... ) at the Libary Bar in the evening with view towards the Castle. Free bicycles rental ("mama"-bicycles) ... good to discover the near surrounding. Best breakfast buffet during my travel in Japan (japanese food was good displayed/explained) Good English at the reception
Cons: Nothing ... this was a really pleasent stay for me.
Pros: Wonderful experience here. Good view to the castle and five minutes walk to the gate of the castle park. Breakfast and dinner inclusive and the taste were really wonderful. Far beyond expectations and will come again for sure!
Cons: Nothing to complain
Pros: Perfectly located within easy walking distance from the Hikone train station and rigjt next to the Hikone castle. Rooms are spacious and clean, free drinks in the lounge area, free access to the spa area, which was just great. Delicious japanese and western style breakfast.
Pros: Excellent bath, great location in this old castle town. Rooms are definitely tiny, though, but the breakfast buffet was one of the best I've had in my life.
Cons: Small rooms, a bit expensive overall.
Pros: Location and view of castle. Great food. Wonderful staff.
Cons: We liked everything. It was a bit dated but well kept up. Room could have been bigger.
With a stay at L'Hotel du Lac in Nagahama, you'll be steps from Lake Biwa and a 4-minute drive from Kaizu Osaki. Featured amenities include complimentary wired Internet access, luggage storage, and a library. A train station pick-up service is provided at no charge, and free self parking is available onsite.
Kiyotaki Ryokan is located in Hikone and takes about 15 minutes walk from Hikone Station, near Hikone Castle and Hikone City Haiyukan. Free WiFi is available throughout the hotel and free LAN internet is available in in each guest room. Yukata are available for guests to wear during their stay. Guests may borrow hair dryers at no additional charge (please inquire at the front desk for details). Facility includes a coin laundry. The hotel possesses 18 guest rooms.
Pros: Laundry service was available. The staff would wash and dry your clothes, you don't have to fumble with the machine and hang your own clothes. The staff did everything for me, even folded my clothes and had it packed nicely in a basket for me the next morning. Also bicycles were available for use for free. So even though the location of the place was quite far from the main sightseeing areas, the bicycle helped me travel quickly to these places. Also the owner seeing that I had a lot of luggage, offered to send me to the station.
Cons: The toilet area was unisex. There was no partition segregation between the 2 urinal and the 2 toilet bowels. So I'm not sure how it would work if both a man and a woman were to use the that space.
Pros: The futon was really comfy, and everywhere looked really clean. The owner was very friendly. The area looked fun to to explore, and it wasn't too far from the castle.
Cons: There's only one bathroom/ shower room, so use between men and women is on a rotation schedule. It was a little inconvenient as I had to wait to use the shower, but it didn't ruin my stay at all. Just something to be aware of.
Pros: Very close to the castle
Cons: The bath is very small and shared by all customers.
Pros: It was an old ryokan who had seen better days. The room was old. We slept on futon which was comfortable. But the airline wasn’t working very well, it was hot at some point in the night cos the blanket was thick and comfortable. The bathroom was shared, you have to follow a strict showering female and male schedule. You have to strip naked as there are no cubicles! But the water was heavenly. It is just like an onsen bathing room except that there was no onsen. Hikone town is quiet. The shops close at 8 pm so grab your dinner and early. Otherwise you have to do a takeout from Lawson convenience store.
Cons: The lighting in the room and the aircon that didn’t work.
Pros: Owner was very friendly and the ryokan is actually quite nice with a small garden. Room was spacious. The Ryokan is also somewhat near Hikone castle and the train station so that's a great boon. Do consider getting the bfast and dinner package though. It smells nice from my room.
Pros: Owner is extremely friendly and helpful and an excellent cook
Cons: The airco in our room was noisy
The Honmachi Juku offers a pleasant stay in Hikone for those traveling for business or leisure. The hotel is conveniently located a short 2km drive from JR Hikone Station. Guests will find Hikone Castle and 旧竹林院 just a short distance from the hotel. This hotel makes a great place to kick back and relax after a long day of sightseeing.
Pros: lovely place. I can enjoy a old Japanese lifestyle. Although we have language barrier, the host still very nice and take care everything.
Pros: Location and traditional style
Cons: A little bit unorganized
Pros: Great location to see the castle.
Cons: Staff didn't reply to any email queries so we tried to bring our luggage for an early storage when there was no one around because we didn't know better.
Pros: It is a traditional Japanese house with very nice and helpful hosts.
Pros: The property was beautiful, and the staff was pleasant. The walk to Hikone Castle was scenic and easy. Nearby restaurants were great.
Cons: The staff wasn’t fluent in English, which made communicating a little difficult.
Pros: This was the best place we stayed at during our trip, so warm and inviting. Gorgeous location and area to visit. The host was so kind and chatty. We were the only ones staying during our visit so we're very lucky to have all facilities to ourselves. All facilities are spotless and generous with amenities. Wish we could have stayed longer.
Pros: This place is an absolute gem! The room was beautifully decorated and very comfortable. The food was excellent - we only had breakfast, but given how good that was, I'd recommend opting for dinner too. The property is in a more residential neighborhood, so it's very quiet and tranquil - perfect for a weekend away from the city.
Pros: Location was amazing nice house with japanese ofuro room.
Cons: Staff can not speak english but sill can communicate for a simple request. The room was pretty small.
Pros: Beautifully modernised 1840 structure. Exceeded expectations!

Pros: Very friendly and helpful staff, hotel is cozy with beautiful view facing lake Biwako. We arrived in time to see the sunset, stunning view from our rooms. We were so impressed that staff even cleaned our luggage before sending to our rooms, attention to details is highly appreciated.
Pros: Great location with views onto the lake. Staff were so friendly and helpful despite us knowing limited Japanese. Food was excellent, evening meal was absolutely superb. The private onsen bath is great if you want to have an onsen experience without needing to bathe in front of strangers. Overall a very relaxing and very Japanese experience.
Pros: Really enjoyed this experience, the food was truly epic.
Cons: The room looked a little shabby and tired. Scuff marks on walls, worn surface etc. Also not as clean as I would of liked.
Pros: Arrived very late for this stay as driving from Kansai airport was longer than expected. Staff was ready to welcome us and help us prepare the room without any hesitation. They were concern for our safety and even reminded us to have our dinner. The open air onsen during the noon and evening, with the scenary, was so beautiful that it cannot be described with words. It was definitely a very wonderful experience in this Ryokan.
Cons: Evening has a lot of insects which children may not like.
Pros: A small, family styled ryokan hotel but well equipped and with excellent personal service. Most staff could speak some English and were all very helpful. The room was spacious and we loved the small balcony facing Lake Biwa as well as the attached private lake-facing / open-air bathtub. The public bath is not large, but sufficient and with a nice lake view.
Cons: Not much, although for someone who likes town shopping or restaurant going, the hotel is a bit far from town. Pricing is a bit on the high side given its kaiseki dinner being quite ordinary.
Pros: The dinner and the breakfast is perfect! Love the dinner set where the beef is superb, the best beef I have ever taste in my life. Sha-bu Sha-bu is so so but is still a great dish though. Will come back again next time for sure!
Cons: Please reply the enquirers email as soon as possible.

With a stay at Futabaso in Hikone, you'll be a 4-minute walk from Lake Biwa and within a 5-minute drive of Hikone Castle. The front desk is staffed during limited hours. Free self parking is available onsite.
Pros: Traditional Japanese ryokan with baths on site
Cons: We did not pre order dinner and were not told that we had to. No spots were open for dinner when we were there on a Tuesday night. There was a 711 close by so we didn’t starve. The staff are really nice.
Pros: Thoughtful service
Pros: Location was very convenient and staff were very kind
Pros: Staff was unusually helpful and thoughtful. After picking us up at the train station, the driver asked if we intended to visit the castle and gardens, informing us that it was closing in two hours. He offered to take us there, then drop off our luggage at the hotel and pick us up afterwards. We wouldn't have had time to visit the castle/gardens otherwise. The driver, receptionist, cook, etc were all members of one large family running the hotel. The hotel was across the road from the coast and there was a little walk along the coast further away. They recommended a nearby restaurant which we could easily walk to in 5 minutes; it was excellent and very reasonably priced.
Pros: It was a family run business that was not only incredibly welcoming but also very comfortable and relaxing.
Cons: Literally nothing.
Pros: Spacious beautiful room with lake views
Pros: Excellent family run traditional run Japanese Inn. The staff don’t speak much English however they are all truly amazing and welcoming. The Japanese breakfast was Devine.

Pros: The breakfast was adequate considering it was included in the price. The hotel is located 2 minutes walk from Hikone railway station. Only stopped 2 nights, Hikone is worth more at this hotel would suit.
Cons: clean and good breakfast.
Pros: Everything you'd expect from a low cost hotel, nothing amazing but everything fine, with helpful staff and a very convenient location
Pros: very close to the station
Pros: location. Breakfast included. Comfortable bed. Staff spoke some English
Pros: Location right by the train station. Ok breakfast. For the price I paid it is exactly what I expected. Ideal for a night if you need to be by the train station. Close to Hikone castle and gardens.
Cons: Basic rooms (but it was clean). No facilities really.
Pros: Very comfortable bed and decent breakfast, very close to the station.
Pros: The location is perfect, in front of the station and there is a big shopping center nereby. The staff is polite (maybe it's normal in Japan) and helpful. The room is tiny but well cleaned and comfortable. Good price.
Cons: I was expecting to get Japanese traditional breakfast with plain rice and miso soup...

Located in Nagahama, KITABIWAKO HOTEL GRAZIE is within a 15-minute drive of Lake Biwa and Hikone Castle. Free self parking is available onsite.
Pros: close to lake Biwa; Nagahama Port is just front of the hotel. very friendly staff
Pros: An amazing 4-star hotel located just next to the shoreline, and all rooms have a view of the beautiful Lake Biwa. Right next to parklands and Nagahama castle, and 5 mins from the city centre and old town market street. Staff was really helpful, the room was impeccably clean, and there are several really good restaurants located inside the hotel building. Also, free parking. If you travel during the rainy season, you can get a room for as little as £50, in which case it is the bargain of the year!
Cons: Nothing, really. Things can get significantly more expensive during Japanese holidays, but this just means that it is good enough to attract domestic tourists.
Pros: Breakfast is good, location is nice and quiet. nice staff a lot of free parking space. next to the lake tour ferry pier. nice view. free shuttle to town.
Cons: you have to drive or take the shuttle to town, a bit remote location for shopping
Pros: The room was very big, by Japanese standards. The view of Lake Biwa was great. The staff was very friendly. I appreciated their sincerity, friendliness and dedication. The carpet was not dirty (as far as I could tell)! The room was large enough to hold a small low table with two chairs. The sento (communal bath) was quite nice. I went at 6 am, and nobody else was there. However, the water could have been hotter, I felt. See attached photo of Lake Biwa in the evening.
Cons: 1. No English-language TV. 2. Although the room was big, the layout of the room was rather strange. That said, I'm still happy that the room was so large. 2. The furniture was nothing special. The attached photo shows what the beds are like. 3. This hotel did not have an ice machine. We had to ask room service. The ice was brought very promptly in a nice bucket. Still, I'd like to have an ice machine available, as is common in Japanese hotels. 4. The breakfast, at ¥2160, is overpriced. Other reviewers have praised the breakfast, but I cannot really agree: no decent bread (but there was genuine butter, not margarine); fruit was only sliced oranges; no eggs made to order or anything like that; the ratatouille (actually zucchini in tomato sauce with cheese) was COLD. The rest of the breakfast was standard Japanese hotel buffet breakfast: curry rice; salmon; salad; sausages; yogurt; a small selection of cereals; bacon; rice porridge; pickles; an array of Japanese dishes. The cappuccino, from a machine, was fine. If the breakfast were less expensive, I'd have no complaint.
Pros: It is a very nice hotel next to the lake.
Cons: It is a bit of a walk from the train station but I suspect most people drive to the hotel.
Pros: The room was actually a good size. The hotel has a great location and the staff are very nice. It's within walking distance to the castle, market square and Nagahama station which was nice. The hotel boats a lake view, however I think if you're on the lower floors, chances are you won't see much of the view because of the raised floor safety measures outside your window.
Cons: The toilet made noise every time I flushed. The refrigerator in my room was also a bit noisy. It was on and off throughout the night. It could do with some modernisation since the pipework sounded old. I couldn't find a socket near the bed. I'd say the hotel lobby and the entrance had more flair than the room.
Pros: The price, for a room with a water view, was excellent. Also they provide transportation to the train station. It was a bonus being right next to the ferry to Chikubushima.
Cons: The restaurant food was pretty pricey, 25-50% the cost of the room. However there certainly were other restaurants in the area.
With a stay at Hotel Sunroute Hikone in Hikone, you'll be within a 5-minute drive of Lake Biwa and Hikone Castle. Featured amenities include complimentary wired Internet access, a computer station, and complimentary newspapers in the lobby. Free self parking is available onsite.
Pros: It was cheap and central and served our needs for two nights to shelter us from the typhoon after we had to move last minute
Cons: Bathroom too small, room very small, 500yen table charge per person in bar
Pros: Variety of restaurants very close by property. Two minute walk from station. Nice walk to castle.
Pros: Very comfortable and well appointed room with adequate storage for two travellers staying for two nights. Everything supplied including toiletries, pyjamas, coin operated laundry and iron upon request. Well presented Japanese style set breakfast with additional buffet items available together with tea or coffee. Excellent location, two minutes walk from railway station, supermarket and restaurants and 10 minute walk to Hikone castle, museum and gardens.
Pros: Great location, helpful staff. Good value for money.
Pros: Room was roomier than some hotel rooms in Japan. It was very convenient to reach by foot from Hikone Station. Our room had a view of the station and looking out to right, we has a view of Hikone Castle. The area around the hotel is very quiet. Room was clean and front desk personnel were courteous & friendly. Breakfast was a set Japanese meal in the restaurant downstairs. Very delicious! Good WiFi.
Pros: Excellent location right by the station; arrived in the rain but didn’t need to dig out my umbrella because the entire route to the hotel is under cover. Room larger than expected and well laid out, though sadly without a view of the castle. Friendly and efficient staff. Breakfast was good quality Japanese food; the on site restaurant does not appear to do other meals, but the hotel is surrounded by a decent set of restaurants and izakaya.
Pros: The location is brilliant, very close to the JR station and a lot of restaurants are nearby. Hikone Castle is also within walking distance, the staffs are friendly.
Pros: The location is excellent - near to railway station. I really liked the breakfast - it was served rather than buffet. Small but nice!
Cons: not sure of car parking arrangement
With a stay at GREEN HOTEL YES NAGAHAMA MINATOKAN in Nagahama, you'll be within a 15-minute drive of Lake Biwa and Hikone Castle. Featured amenities include a 24-hour front desk, luggage storage, and laundry facilities. Free self parking is available onsite.
Pros: The only real problem was that the lift and certain floors stank of smoke. The staff were wonderful and did there best and moved some of our group to other rooms.
Cons: Smoking being allowed in hotels.
Pros: Good Price-ratio Nice bathing facilities Good restaurant next door for dinner Free parking at the hotel
Cons: Was OK, nothing really special Staff was obviously not really used to have foreigners as guests
Pros: Near Biwako
Cons: The price is a bit high and the location is a bit far away from the sightseeing points.
Pros: Nice location close to the bay, castle and the train station. bike rental was great. breakfast also decent. staff are kind.
Cons: difficult to sleep with the noise from the nearby railroad, light seeping in from both the window and the door. room also feels stuffy. dust on the headboard rail of the bed. not too many channels on tv. onsen not available in the morning.
With a stay at Hotel Estacion Hikone, you'll be centrally located in Hikone, within a 5-minute drive of Lake Biwa and Hikone Castle. Featured amenities include complimentary wired Internet access, complimentary newspapers in the lobby, and dry cleaning/laundry services. Limited parking is available onsite.
Pros: The staff are very welcoming. The hotel is quiet, despite being near a busy road and very close to the JR station. The castle is an easy walk down the Main Street. Try to make time to walk some way around the moat - quite atmospheric. Several restaurants around the hotel / station close early-ish (21.00). I recommend an Okinawan-themed bar / restaurant called 'Peter and Mary' - turn right out of the hotel, cross the main road, and then first left - 50 meters. Note: the hotel was running a discounted offer of imported (bottled) beers + outdoor seating.
With a stay at Hotel Route-Inn Hikone in Hikone, you'll be within a 5-minute drive of Lake Biwa and Hikone Castle. Featured amenities include dry cleaning/laundry services, a 24-hour front desk, and luggage storage. Free self parking is available onsite.
Pros: The room was good - it cooled down quickly. The staff were friendly and attentive and able to handle my poor spoken Japanese. The shuttle bus service was excellent
Cons: the location was OK if you had a vehicle - otherwise a bit of a hassle to catch the local train and walk to hotel
Pros: Perfect overnight stay. 24 hour restaurants right next door as well as a convenience store a 5 minute walk away. Hotel staff was very accommodating and the breakfast was huge and flavorful. The room was small but perfect for light travelers such as myself. Everything was very clean and the bed comfortable. I'd stay here again no doubt.
Pros: They run a free shuttle bus to Hikone station in the morning, there's fresh baked bread at breakfast (along with a wide variety of other options) everything was incredibly clean and new looking, and smelled very nice. There's an on site restaurant and also a lot of other options nearby.
Cons: I'm not sure if there's a shuttle *from* the station too- I only found out about the one *to* the station by chance. Otherwise it's about a 20-30 minute walk.
Pros: Nice breakfast for the price we have paid.
