Wakka - Minamiaso - Building

9.3 Excellent (160 reviews)
Overview Reviews

9.5 Excellent
Pros: We added on the breakfast and dinner option and did not regret. It was a spread worthy of a ryokan, and the presentation and quality of the food was all spectacular. The room was clean and had every amenity you could need, including a toaster, microwave, stove, kettle and medium fridge. I could honestly imagine living there for a long time!
Cons: There was a large bath located in between the two rooms, but because it was the only bathroom, and the tub took really long to fill, we couldn't enjoy it fully without fear of inconveniencing others.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Owners were super nice. Breakfast (optional) was superb. Great location - quietest spot in Japan.
Cons: Cold concrete outside shared bathroom (it was mid winter and freezing cold). Timber decking would be great as an improvement.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very clean hotel Staffs are really perfect
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Lovely quiet location with a great view of Mount Aso. Very friendly owners and a delicious breakfast.
Cons: Not much to not like but we noted that the beds were a little uncomfortable for our liking whereas the futons were very good.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is one of that little gems that you can’t believe you’ve found! We loved staying here! It’s serene and quiet and the views are stunning. Try the food because Hiroaki knows his way around the kitchen! He and his wife Noriko are lovely people and they will look after you very well!
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The cabin is private and comfortable. The facilities are good. The view is splendid.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The hospitality of owner has been wonderful. The food provided has been excellent. The view of the place is fantastic.
Cons: The location of the hotel is a bit inconvenience but worth it.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: A cosy, quiet and quaint house located in the mountain. Dinner was great- the hosts previously worked as soba chefs and their handmade soba was delicious. The hosts were really hospitable too, they packed us home cooked onigiris when we checked out for us to eat along our road journey. They were also helpful with suggesting places to visit around the area. And the bonus was that they have a very cute family cat.
Cons: The room was not very big, but this should be expected of a mountain cabin. The common showers are located in the next room, hence you have to get out into the cold for a few seconds in order to access the shower. However, this wasn’t a problem for us as we decided to drive to the onsen nearby (about 15 min drive away) for a dip and shower at the same time.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: friendly owners
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Amazing view from the window, a bit hard to reach but overall a very good experience

9.5 Excellent
Pros: This gem is a great find. Walk into the house and you at once feel at home, you feel comfortable as if you were in your own home. Your host reminds you of your grandfather, who is very caring and concerned that you are enjoying yourself while staying with him. He will readily supply you with hand drawn maps of the more important places to visit. Eateries and other sites (e.g. Takachiho Gorge) all within driving distances. The place is magical, and if a unicorn or a fairy popped up, I would not be surprised. We truly enjoyed the two days spent there.
Cons: Nothing.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful setting, lovely host, wonderful old Japanese restaurant nearby in a 250 year old traditional house
Cons: Little bit cramped in bedroom but for price good
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The cottage were quaint and clean. Perfect for my family. Love the set up and the privacy too despite a small cottage. The owner were very helpful and knowledgeable. Love the private onsen too! Overall five star rating from my family
Cons: Nothing
3.8 Mediocre
Pros: The garden is cute. The location is a good base for exploring the area. The host is passionate about the area. And wants to help and give you tips. But alot of his recommendations were outdated and a tourist traps.
Cons: The place is dank, musty, dusty and mouldy. I washed my hair there and 3 days later I still cannot get the mouldy smell out of my hair. There is enough dust and mould in this place since 1985. There is so much fake "air freshener" sprayed in this place to poison a whole country. The fake fumes are trying to cover the smell of mould. But is just making it unbearable. Just open some windows and let the fresh air in. I couldn't use the toilet because I couldn't breathe. There is a timer spray that probably sprays every 5 seconds in such a small area with no windows. The toxic fumes are terrible.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful location, this was by far the best place we stayed during our time driving around Aso National Park.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very nice wooden house in middle of forest. Very nice and helpful host. Very recommended
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The home is beautiful and comfortable. The host was very helpful and gave us many tips on where/ what to visit in the area. I'd definitely stay at this place again if I were to go back to that area of Japan.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The dining area has a lovely, cosy feel with interesting objects displayed. It was relaxing to bring our own food and heat it using the microwave and sit in the communal area to eat. This room, and the travel advice and map from the host, made our stay at Sanrinsha a special and different stay on our tour of Kyushu. The house is surrounded by beautiful trees with a winding path, lit up at night, through them. The shower area has a large, warm bath.
Cons: We are pleased that we hired a car as Sanrinsha is a few kilometres out of the main village of Takamori.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: A charming chalet in the forest, about 20mins by walk to the famous Kumanoza-jinja, 10mins from Tsukimawari Onsen, great experience to have a walk in the woods and rice fields, it is lovely the host Satoru has shared with us his hand made map. We don’t have a car, Satoru is so nice to drive us to the bus station at 7H00 in the morning of his birthday. It is in deed not handy to reach here without a car, but the hotel is near the bus stop of round town bus from Takamori station. There is also a family sized onsen and a cozy salon in the hotel.
Cons: Nothing to do with the hotel itself. For those who come here without a car, better get some food earlier since almost all restaurants nearby are closed after 20H00.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Although the host is looks fierce but actually he is a nice guy after talking with him. It was surprisingly me when I knew he was busy in searching for us some attraction places that suitable to our group. The host recommended us to a restaurant (田乐) for dinner, which is nearby to the Sanrinsha. It's highly recommend to you !

9.5 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful location, surrounded by mountains, garden and mountain view from room! Surroundings are dotted with small country-cafes, serene and peaceful forest yet does not feel like you are by yourself as there are other beautiful low-rise vacation lodging nearby that does not block the view. Staff are earnest and some of the serving staff speaks Chinese, making it easy for Asian-based visitors. It is most convenient to drive as it is not quite in town. The hotel and rooms are very clean, actually tastefully furnished and great onsen bath! Love their outdoor bath! It is conveniently located to reach Mount Aso, Kurokawa Onsen, Kumamoto and etc.
Cons: Nothing! I would love to come back and stay for a month!
8.3 Excellent

9.3 Excellent
Pros: The hotel itself is great. Really good located in case you have a (rental) car. Btw you need a car for Aso and all other locations otherwise you will loose a lot time with traveling. From the hotel you cab reach the main vulcano within 30 minutes and the Takachiho valley/ canyon is just 60 minutes away by car. The onsen of the hotel is very nice as well and the breakfast is great too. We had a room with a view on the vulcano, really cool!
Cons: The room was equipped quite well, but the combination in regards to practically could be better. We had two big bags with us and the required space for opening them was sped for unnecessary furbiture.
6.8 Good
Pros: The room was.clean and tidy. The dinner and breakfast served were good. The staffs were very polite and helpful.
Cons: The rooms was rather small. It was rather troublesome to change to sandals before you can enter the hotel area. There is no elevator, so it was rather tough to carry big and heavy luggage up the stairs to the room. There is no place within walking distance to get food unless you eat in the hotel. The nearest mall is about 3min drive away. I did not see any public bus outside the hotel too.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The location and the view are great. There are numerous restaurants in the village, a short drive away. Staff is definitely friendly.
Cons: The hotel is old and somewhat tired looking.
8.8 Excellent

Cons: No elevator , luckily they have only two floors.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Nice quiet location on the south side of Mt Aso. Glad it was away from it all. Dinner was tasty and aesthetically beautiful.
Cons: No choice but to lug our bags upstairs to level 2. Maybe for the local tourist this is no issue as their bags will be much smaller.

7.0 Good
Pros: There is a convenience store (LAWSON) just opposite to the hotel. The location is rather convenient for visitors who want to visit the Aso Volcano. Staff were friendly and helpful. The public hot spring facilities were quite good.
Cons: The facilities were a bit old and unclean. The sign outside the public hot spring indicated that it opens till 24:00, we originally wanted to go there at 23:00 but the corridor lights of our floor were already completely off at 23:00 (100% dark without ANY lights), which was quite strange indeed.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The best service is the public baths. There are 2, one inside the building and another one just outside. The personal was really kind, nice familiar atmosphere, the breakfast was good.
Cons: The building is quite old and the hotel isolated but there is bus stop just in front of.
